00:30It was probably one of the best fishing trips I ever got to take.
00:3422,000 pounds of black cod on one string.
00:38It was five miles long.
00:40Fish on every hook. Literally.
00:42I was a fisherman by trade for,
00:45shoot, I started out when I was like 10 years old.
00:49Basically retired from it 15 years ago.
00:52I used to fish for money.
00:53Now I just fish for food.
01:00Normally in the summer, in the fall,
01:02I fill my freezer full of fish.
01:03Well this summer I didn't end up with the normal amount of fish
01:06that I usually have.
01:07On top of that, I lost my old halibut gear.
01:10I got hung up.
01:12I couldn't get it off the bottom.
01:13I had to pull as hard as I could and I ended up parting it.
01:16I lost two thirds of my gear.
01:18Now I have no gear and my summer catch is pretty much almost gone.
01:24So today I'm going to put together a nice well-built string of halibut gear
01:31and I'm going to go out and catch some much needed halibut.
01:34I have tons of good memories, you know, being young and spry.
01:38and the sky was the limit.
01:41Things have changed now.
01:54My first order of business is I've got to go through my stuff.
01:58I've got to get my rope together, my buoys.
02:01I lost two of my anchors, so I have to build a couple new anchors
02:05out of what else?
02:06My favorite material, scrap.
02:09I've been saving this for a while.
02:11This is an armature out of an old generator, I do believe.
02:15Looks like junk, but it's heavy and it's what I need.
02:19This is going to be an anchor shaft
02:21and I've got some more of it in my other junk pile.
02:24If you go to buy a small anchor from a hardware store,
02:27ha!
02:29You might as well just, you know,
02:30that means you can probably afford to buy fish.
02:34This one here is pretty much already made,
02:37which is a blessing.
02:38All I've got to do is basically attach a ring to the end of it.
02:40This anchor is going to be probably half the weight of this one.
02:45I'm going to add some flukes to it
02:46so it won't just skip along the bottom.
02:52I'm the type of guy who's pretty happy when I can fix something
02:57or figure a problem out without having to resort to call in,
03:01you know, an expert on the field.
03:03I'll study and I'll become proficient at whatever I need to do
03:08to get the job done.
03:09Oh, look at that, that's going to work perfect.
03:12Easy peasy.
03:15The world needs to repurpose more of its throwing away stuff.
03:19It's one of my pet peeves.
03:23Throwing away perfectly good stuff
03:24and not actually making it work again.
03:30That looks like a...
03:32Looks like an anchor to me.
03:39This is like probably close to 200 pound test line.
03:43It's going to be my officially what they would call a Ganyon.
03:50And I will attach my hooks to these
03:52and I will attach those to the rope.
03:55This would be a good all around small hook.
04:01You could probably catch a 300 pound halibut on this.
04:05This little line.
04:07Just like that.
04:08I'll put 30 of these on.
04:11Every 18 feet, there'll be a hook.
04:20Put some bait on it and I'll be ready to go.
04:28I love being out on the water.
04:33I love traveling out there.
04:36It's always a good adventure.
04:41It's amazing.
04:42You're alive.
04:43You're free.
04:43You're in the elements.
04:47I'd rather not be in a little cube
04:49with some drywall on it watching television.
04:57We got the current pushing against us now.
05:02That's just the rip right out front.
05:05It's where the tides flash.
05:07The spot that gets particularly violent.
05:09It's called the Mariposa Reef
05:11because it sunk a big ship.
05:14Not the kind of place you want to end up with bad weather.
05:19I used to come out here in my rowboat
05:21to get stuck in the whirlpools.
05:23I was really dumb when I was 11.
05:26It was a lot of fun though.
05:28Wasn't quite worried about dying so much back then.
05:33I got up this morning and it was a good shot of weather,
05:36so I figured I could actually make it across Summoner Strait
05:39and go check out some new coastline.
05:42Figured I'd take the skiff with me
05:44so I can tuck up into the nooks and crannies,
05:46go explore some new grounds,
05:47and maybe catch a fish.
05:50I had a lot of delusions of grandeur last night.
05:54I marked a bunch of fishing spots.
05:57I heard there's a king salmon or two around.
06:01And I got my fishing pole, so I might give it a shot here in a little bit.
06:10I see a lot of goals out there.
06:12That's a good sign though.
06:16Active goals tell us that there's probably some feed.
06:24See if I can drop a hook in the water.
06:28Hopefully I won't get tangled up in my propeller.
06:37Now if I had my commercial business,
06:40if I could turn this into a commercial fishing boat,
06:42I could fish as many hooks off the back deck as I could
06:45instead of trying one hook in the water.
06:48If I could go out and I could confidently
06:51catch enough fish to make a living
06:54and give my daughter a good life,
06:56I guarantee you that's exactly what I'd be doing.
07:02It'd be nice to pick up a king salmon.
07:06It's a king salmon this time of year.
07:09Pretty lazy.
07:10They don't like swimming against rivers.
07:15Let's see if there's any fish around here.
07:18Maybe, just maybe.
07:20We'll get something for the smokehouse.
07:27It takes a special person to live out here.
07:32You gotta work for everything.
07:36Just the pleasure of a warm home.
07:39You gotta work for that.
07:41You can't just flip a switch.
07:43You're gonna break your back for that.
07:49Nobody else is stupid enough to be out here in this kind of weather
07:54looking for logs, so it's worth taking a peek.
07:57Every day you're looking for firewood that's easy to get.
08:04Yesterday there was a big tide and I wanted to see if there's any logs
08:08that came off the beach.
08:09It's a good time to go out there and get them for somebody else does,
08:13you know?
08:13First come, first served.
08:16I'm gonna go check out Whiskey Cove.
08:19I still have some firewood left, but I'm burning through it.
08:24Never have too much firewood out here.
08:35And this thing's cutting out.
08:41There it goes again.
08:44My boat is like a total slug.
08:49It's just way underpowered.
08:52I feel like I could swim faster than my boat.
08:56She is firing back up, but something's definitely wrong.
09:00Now I'm flirting with disaster here.
09:03It's not running right.
09:05Yeah, we're cutting out a little bit, but I'm not gonna push it
09:09going any further than this today.
09:11Because it looks like we're headed for snow now.
09:20Oh, I don't remember a rock being there.
09:25Am I gonna get lucky for coming in here?
09:30It's a log.
09:32Yes, yes, yes.
09:36We got a log.
09:38Wow, that's a nice log.
09:40How cool is that?
09:42There is a prize.
09:47This is a really good winter find.
09:55Oh, man.
09:57Spruce.
09:58I like it. I like it a lot.
10:00See if I can even budge it.
10:12Maybe roll it closer in the water.
10:15No!
10:21See if I can even budge it.
10:26Maybe roll it closer in the water.
10:37Okay.
10:39There ain't no way I'm gonna roll that thing with this.
10:45I don't want to leave this.
10:46God, I wonder if my boat could pull that thing off there.
10:52I gotta quit thinking of what ifs and just do this.
10:57I need to find a good rock to use for a hammer.
11:21In a perfect world, that log's gonna pull right off.
11:27In a perfect world, that log's gonna pull right off.
11:41Oh, boy, that's just not budging, man.
11:47She's just gutless.

22:27It's wintertime, there's lots of moisture in the air.
22:31There is water in there.
22:33I can tell this by the color of it.
22:35It doesn't look like it's supposed to.
22:47Okay.
22:48That's water, that's not fuel, that's water in there.
22:52I can see it already separating.
22:54Three quarters water and a quarter fuel.
22:58And no wonder my skiff is dragging ass here.
23:01It's because it's trying to run on water.
23:04It's not burning any fuel, it's not getting any gas.
23:07I just got to get all this water out of my system and then she'll purr again.
23:11Now start the hard part.
23:16Cleaning this bottom off is my least favorite chore of everything out here.
23:23There could be sea life growing on the bottom of my boat and that's something I have to do a
23:27couple times a year.
23:29It's bad drag on the bottom of your boat and that'll slow you down too.
23:32I've done this before and used a rope instead of this chain and I've had the rope actually break.
23:42Okay, all clear.
23:49Now for the big show.
23:51I'm going to put the chain on one side of the boat, attach a rope to that.
23:56Put the rope on the winch and pull it up on its side.
24:00Tie it to a tree and hopefully a gust of wind don't come and blow it over on me and
24:05kill me.
24:08Now where it gets real, real quick.
24:14Okay, we're coming up.
24:17Give her some gas.
24:21Ah!
24:46Something gave way.
24:47Always the first impulse is cover your face and your head because you never know if that rope's going to
24:53come back at you.
24:55Man, I really thought I got all the hiccups out of there.
24:58But apparently not, oh, aluminum broke.
25:05Before I had the chain secured in the front, that piece of aluminum, that busted out.
25:12Luckily, the other places where I had the chain fastened to it held.
25:17Just put a longer bolt in here and try again.
25:20That's all I can do.
25:22That's all I got.
25:23Got to make it work.
25:25You know, I'm fighting, bucking the tide here as usual.
25:29I'm starting to push it.
25:35All right, I'm going to give it another shot.
25:38Come hell or literally hot water.
25:41This has got to work this time.
25:58Oh, there it goes, there it goes.
26:00Yes, yes, yes.
26:12It's got to be able to stop it in that sweet spot and hold it there.
26:19Otherwise, it's going to go completely over.
26:25Ah, there it is, there it is!
26:32Holy s**t!
26:35I'm going to go under there now and get some sticks under there.
26:40Make it safe and get to cleaning before that tide comes back up.
26:57So I'm going to let her back down and, uh, definitely going to be running better.
27:06Got all clean gas.
27:08She's going to fly and I'm going to go get that log.
27:18The older I get, the more patience I have.
27:22When I was young, I was always wanting to get things done in a big hurry.
27:28Believe me, I fixed a lot of the things that I built in a big hurry.
27:34Slower, in a lot of cases, is better.
27:39I got the gear soaking.
27:41I'd like to, uh, give some of these gaff hooks a little overhaul.
27:47My brother made this one for me and this tine is too long.
27:51You can't get it socked in and it wants to spin in your hand.
27:56So I'm going to shorten this up and then it'll be a lot handier.
28:01I made this gaff hook, oh, it's probably close to 30 years ago.
28:04Ha!
28:05I want to make an attempt to cut this handle off and put it on the correct direction.
28:15I'd like to not screw this thing up because it does have a lot of sentimental value.
28:20It's just a tool, but like all my tools, a lot of them I've acquired from other people.
28:31And those people, most of them aren't on the planet any longer, so...
28:37I'm just going to take two inches off that puppy.
28:53It's a minor detail, fiddling around with stuff like this,
28:57but it's really important once you've got a big fish hanging off the side of the boat.
29:03If you spend all this time and energy getting your gear ready,
29:06making sure the weather's okay, getting out there, tides, wind.
29:12And you're pulling your gear back and you don't have the correct tool to get that fish on board your
29:16boat
29:18because they don't come on board willingly.
29:21Those fish can, they can go wild.
29:23I've had a few occasions where I've lost fish halfway over the rail because I was using an improper tool.
29:30And all that energy is like flushed right down the drain.
29:35You can tell it sticks and it stays.
29:37It doesn't skip out.
29:40Whereas this one here,
29:42if you're holding it on onto it like that there,
29:44you can't get it to go in.
29:50It didn't quite work the way I'd anticipated it working.
29:53It's called design flaw.
29:5660-year-old Sam knows a hell of a lot more than 30-year-old Sam.
30:02He's figured it out.
30:06These are sticky sharp now.
30:09Got two prime little gaff hooks ready to go.
30:14Ready to catch a fish.
30:18There's a lot of variabilities out here.
30:22And you never know what's going to happen.
30:29The only thing you can do as a person
30:32is keep putting the next foot forward
30:35and just keep going.
30:39I just ran that whole drag,
30:41made it clear back to my boat.
30:44Didn't even catch a kelp cod.
30:47Just one more pass.
30:49One more pass.
30:51I'm cruising around and, you know,
30:53I see my rod jerk.
30:54And I jump up
30:56and I pull it out of the holder
30:57and lost a fish,
31:00but there's more in the sea.
31:02After that, you know,
31:03I felt my heart pumping
31:05and I just, I wanted more of it.
31:07People catch king salmon back here.
31:09I've heard of multiple,
31:11multiple instances of it happening,
31:13but not me.
31:15Not yet.
31:16We'll just see what happens.
31:48and I don't know if I'm going to be lucky enough
31:52to get him on board or not.
32:11That is a beautiful fish.
32:18I haven't caught a king salmon out of my skiff
32:20in about a year now,
32:22so that was a really good feeling
32:24knowing that I can do it.
32:26It's always nice when you have, you know,
32:29five or six meals in front of you.
32:30That was a little amazing turn of events there.
32:34I was just about ready to give up the ghost,
32:37but I made another pass
32:39and bonked a beautiful king salmon.
32:43That just made my day.
32:47Putter back to my boat first
32:49and put this fish on ice.
33:09I'm sure glad I caught that fish.
33:11I feel like I put another notch in my belt
33:14for another winter and support protection.
33:17I can only hope that, uh,
33:19you know, by being an active part
33:21of this community,
33:22I'm a little bit better rooted,
33:26that I have some better footing.
33:31This place is responsible
33:33for my entire existence.
33:35This is my place, and I'm part of it.
33:37It's part of me.
33:38I want to be here
33:39for the majority of my life.
33:48Login prepared me for this part of my life.
33:53When I'm cutting wood,
33:54I'm in a different world.
33:55I don't think about anything other than sawn.
34:00I pay attention.
34:01I'm totally at home doing it.
34:05I'm in my happy spot when I'm sawing wood.
34:10In port protection,
34:11a steady supply of firewood
34:13is key to surviving the winter.
34:15After heavy snowfall thwarted his plan
34:18to drive up the road to reach the best timber,
34:20Gary must now search closer to home
34:22in order to refill his empty woodshed.
34:27My solution now is,
34:29I've seen a blowdown
34:30by the community building
34:31across the old school boardwalk,
34:33and I thought this spring
34:35I would clean that mess up.
34:36But as it is,
34:38I'm going to go and cut that now,
34:39and I'll clean the mess up,
34:41and I'll get firewood for the winter here.
34:44Well, this is a hemlock.
34:46It's good wood.
34:47It puts out a lot of heat.
34:49With the wood I have,
34:51this whatever wet wood,
34:53sapwood is on this,
34:54will stretch mine way longer.
34:56Dry wood is what you want.
34:58But right now, I want any wood.
35:08The community has helped me
35:09in the manner that we have the boardwalk.
35:11Be able to get to our houses,
35:13take our stuff there.
35:16The boardwalk in port protection,
35:18you might say, is the lifeblood.
35:20This is a win-win situation for me.
35:22I get the wood.
35:25I get a little respect for the rest of the people
35:27for working for nothing,
35:29and the self-satisfaction
35:31of doing the right thing.
35:39Well, in my younger days,
35:41I was way stronger,
35:43way more physical.
35:46I probably,
35:47they'll pick them up,
35:48throw them right up there,
35:49but get a little older.
35:56I kind of surprise myself sometimes.
35:58My physical stature is still not as good as it was,
36:03but it's still pretty damn good.
36:05It's hard for people to keep up with me at my age.
36:07I was pretty macho when I was younger.
36:09I could pick up most anything I ever tried.
36:14In the old days,
36:15I always have a big wood pile,
36:17and I used to brag about it,
36:18telling these guys that,
36:19if you guys don't cut some wood,
36:21I'll be able to steal your old lady
36:22just by showing her my wood pile.
36:24This is the reprieve right here.
36:26I'm a happy camper right now,
36:28and it takes quite a bit to make me happy.
36:30This is helping me,
36:31but this isn't the answer to the problem.
36:34I have to get off my dead ass
36:36and get the wood in the summertime,
36:38get this woodshed full
36:39so I can sit around here
36:41and drink beer in my lawn chair,
36:43and then when the winter comes,
36:44I'm just keep chucking it in the fire.
36:47Yeah, I like it like that.
36:49Maybe I'll even start making beer,
36:51save a little money.
37:00Most people have to, you know,
37:02have a job.
37:03and go pay money
37:04for the necessities that they need.
37:08First and foremost, food.
37:14Where I'm in a situation
37:16where I can cut out the middle man entirely,
37:17I just go out and harvest them myself.
37:21It always tastes better
37:23if I'm the one that's harvested it.
37:26You know where it came from.
37:31There's no guarantees
37:32with any of this stuff,
37:34but I'm really happy
37:35that I got the new gear.
37:36This is going to be my test run,
37:39see if I can get it back up in one piece.
37:46I kind of get a warm,
37:49kingly feeling
37:49when everything works right.
37:51Yeah, I got the sun coming up.
37:55Hopefully I'll be able to put some fish on the griddle.
38:06The old hydraulics
38:08getting creaky.
38:11There's always anticipation
38:12when you get your anchor up
38:16hoping for some fresh fish.
38:23Not much action.
38:25Man, that bitch,
38:26looks like I haven't even been touched.
38:29Slim pickings here.
38:37Hopefully this won't be a damn water hole.
38:41I feel something.
38:43I think.
38:44Hopefully it wasn't just a hook
38:45dragging across the bottom,
38:46but I felt something thumping a little bit.
38:48There we go.
38:52Yeah, I feel something.
39:00I feel something.
39:01I think.
39:03Hopefully it wasn't just a hook
39:04dragging across the bottom,
39:05but I felt something thumping a little bit.
39:07Hopefully he'll make it to the top.
39:09Sometimes you feel them thumping
39:10and they manage to get off
39:14before you get to the fish.
39:16Oh, he's pulling pretty hard now.
39:18There we go.
39:23There he is.
39:25He's at least a 50-pounder.
39:36Nice fish.
39:39He must have just got on.
39:42That gaff worked great.
39:46Hook out.
39:48This is the perfect eating fish.
39:52Enough meat in that fish.
39:53I don't have to worry about
39:54catching another havilet for,
39:55or, oh, shoot,
39:57at least a month or two anyways.
40:00Look at that.
40:01It was two hooks from the anchor.
40:04Yeah, I really like this new gear.
40:06Barring any mishaps,
40:07I'll probably be fishing this
40:09until I'm pushing up daisies.
40:12New gear.
40:13Got a fish.
40:15I'd call that success.
40:18Personally.
40:19Couldn't ask for a better winter fish.
40:27Everything in this weather deteriorates,
40:30and it needs constant maintenance
40:32to keep it up.
40:35The forest and ocean,
40:37it's all trying to take it back.
40:41You've got to get up and get her done,
40:44because the longer you wait,
40:45a little problem goes south on you
40:47real quick.
40:51Hopefully,
40:52she flies.
40:59Nice.
41:03Oh, wow.
41:04She's, uh,
41:06she's running good now.
41:08Not hesitating.
41:09Not cutting out at all.
41:11Not dying.
41:15Hopefully, my log's still there.
41:17It should be.
41:23I got it still here.
41:26After all that crap.
41:38That's already stuck in the ground.
41:40This log was way, way out
41:43of what I normally would do,
41:46taking risks to get a damn log.
41:48But at one point,
41:49I was just so mad,
41:51I wasn't going to give up.
41:53That log is coming home with me,
41:55hell or high water.
41:57Okie dokie.
41:59This is it.
42:05Please work.
42:07Please work.
42:22Yes.
42:23Yes.
42:23Yes.
42:24It's coming.
42:25Yes.
42:28I've won!
42:31Finally,
42:32I got the log off here!
42:34We take a lot of risks
42:36to get what we want out here,
42:38and sometimes
42:39you struggle like hell.
42:42Things don't always work out
42:44like you plan.
42:47And it's really taught me
42:49to improvise
42:50and just keep trying and trying.
42:59When you start working as a kid,
43:01and you blink your eyes,
43:02and the next thing you know,
43:03you're 60.
43:07you realize that a lot of the things
43:09that you've accumulated through pain and suffering over the years
43:13are bearing pretty good fruit.
43:17Cutting wood and all that just wears you down,
43:19but my golly,
43:21I still get up the next day and do it again.
43:24You work hard and you know your business,
43:28people respect you for that.
43:31There's not a lot of young people in the industry right now,
43:34and I'm pretty sure that these folks want to see it carry on
43:39past their generation.
43:41I'm going to do my best
43:43to keep it going.
43:49I think I'm stronger physically
43:51and mentally living here.
43:53I'm proud of the things I build
43:55and do around here,
43:57so I'm very content living here now
44:00and have no plans of leaving anytime soon.
