00:30They're very hard workers.
00:32They're also very destructive.
00:36They gnaw your trees down and dam everything up.
00:40They plug culverts up on the road systems
00:42and washes the roads out, you know,
00:45and you can't get the town.
00:46You ain't got no road to go across.
00:49Conabers are pretty simple.
00:51Basically, the way they work is beaver swims into it
00:55and game over.
01:01They're pretty deadly.
01:06Now comes the fun part.
01:08It's time to go hunt.
01:11I kind of like the beaver, you know.
01:13I mean, it's got a very beautiful fur on him.
01:16You can make things with him and that
01:18and make pretty good money.
01:20Kind of the way a lot of this country was founded and stuff,
01:24you know, was by fur markers
01:25sending trappers into areas that people have never been.
01:30And, you know, those were some tough guys back in them days.
01:33The spot that I'm going to is kind of a spot that I like to go hunting up past it
01:40all the time.
01:41And this right here is exactly what I'm talking about.
01:46This is not good.
01:52This is a prime example of what the beaver do here.
01:57This is what the area they're trying to flood there
02:00and this road could wash out, you know,
02:03and then we'd be screwed.
02:06We've got to get rid of them.
02:12Port Protection is a group of very stalwart people, fiercely independent.
02:18We don't poke our nose into everybody else's business.
02:20But if anything happens, it's not unusual for everybody just to drop everything
02:25and focus on that problem and then take care of it.
02:30Deplorable.
02:34Deplorable.
02:35This time of year, when you've got 16 hours of darkness,
02:39if you're walking along here at night not paying attention
02:41and your foot goes down into one of those things,
02:45basically, your leg gets broke right about there.
02:49So it's definitely in need of some repair.
02:53It doesn't make any sense to me to try pulling out individual boards
02:57and replacing them because the one right next to it is probably going to break.
03:01So I'm just going to float a new boardwalk right over top of this.
03:05In the community itself of Port Protection,
03:08the boardwalks are basically the only way you can easily travel between house to house
03:14to get your groceries and your supplies or just to go visit your friends and neighbors.
03:19Back in the old days, before the boardwalks,
03:21it was just basically mud through the forest.
03:24It was real miserable.
03:26So the boardwalk is an essential tool for just getting your daily chores done around here.
03:32It doesn't have to be perfect.
03:34I just need to get an idea of how many boards it's going to take.
03:37I have a limited amount of boards.
03:39If I make it three feet wide,
03:41it looks like I have enough to make the boardwalk as it stands now.
03:55Yeah, look at that.
03:56It's not bouncing anymore.
03:58One board.
03:59Quick-a-doodie.
04:00This is called smash-and-grab carpentry.
04:03Get in, get out, make it safe.
04:10It's all as a rock.
04:18Hey, it is nice when something works the way you want it to work,
04:24and it's not like you've got to be a rocket scientist to figure this stuff out.
04:36I already feel way more confident walking on this thing.
04:39I've been trying to avoid hurting myself just getting my materials here
04:42and getting things laid out.
04:44When it gets paper on it, then you'll be able to leave cartwheels.
04:48And we'll be off to the races.
04:53Everyday life out here is a challenge.
04:56It's not easy by no means,
04:58but I'm actually in really good physical health for my age,
05:01and this place has made me that way.
05:14Okay, I am home.
05:17Yeah, I'm going to make myself a pot of coffee here
05:20and get the chill off,
05:22and I'm going to get ready for deer hunting.
05:29and this bus was one of the best investments I ever made.
05:38It's great because I can stay out here later hunting
05:42until, you know, basically almost dark.
05:45Disasters can happen instantly out there,
05:48so it's just nice to have a home away from home.
05:53Okay, I think I have everything.
05:57Time to go.
06:13I'm trying to imitate a doe bleeding,
06:16and that's what the pucks are looking for.
06:21My tummy's growling louder than I'm pleading about.
06:29I'm going to go out and get myself some venison for the winter.
06:34Hopefully, they're out getting some sun today,
06:37and I can sneak up on them when they're napping.
06:41Give them a rude awakening.
06:44The lead burrito.
06:47Usually, the deer, when they see you, they run and hide,
06:50but now it's mating season,
06:52and the deer aren't thinking of predators anymore.
06:55They're thinking of finding a doe
06:57and doing what they do.
07:00I don't know how to put it nicely.
07:10That looks like a wolf track there.
07:13I don't like seeing wolf tracks
07:15because that means if they're around,
07:17the deer are usually gone.
07:20Whenever I see wolf tracks,
07:22it scares the hell out of me.
07:25I mean, I'm out here alone.
07:28It just really makes me uncomfortable
07:30to hear them in the woods howling,
07:33or I've even had them growling next to me.
07:36They're very sneaky, stealthy critters.
07:40I don't like this.
07:42There's something about it that's creeping me out.
07:47Usually, when I get this feeling,
07:49there's another predator around,
07:52and it's usually always dead on, right?
07:57I'm not liking this.
08:00Something tells me to get the hell out of there.
08:05It is a nice long stick, man.
08:07Yeah.
08:08And it might actually be able to glide
08:09right over top of this.
08:10That's what I'm thinking.
08:11If we can get it limbed down,
08:13it might not take much to actually get her
08:15to pop in the drink.
08:17Yeah, but I have very minimal experience
08:21dealing with this kind of stuff, man.
08:23I'd get my stuff off the beach.
08:24Okay, well, I've done a fair bit.
08:27I'm a little gun-shy, so to speak.
08:30So as you can see, this is a very small channel,
08:33and it's the main thoroughfare we use
08:35to get back and forth between Point Baker
08:37and Port Protection.
08:39But windstorms knocked these down,
08:41and now they're interfering with passage.
08:43You can usually make it through in a skiff,
08:44but if you're trying to come through in a big boat,
08:47it's problematic.
08:48So we're going to see what we can do
08:50about getting some of this out of the way.
08:52That's the plan.
08:54But it's going to be a dangerous plan.
08:57Not ideal.
08:58Not ideal.
09:00Not ideal.
09:34It's going to be a matter of trying to get it into the water
09:41so we can get it where it's headed.
09:43It's going to be one big, heavy monkey, man.
09:44I don't know.
09:46Might still have to whack another chunk off it
09:49to get it to move, but I don't know
09:51if I got the ponies in this skiff to do it, so.
09:55Now it's time to give her a little tug with the skiff.
09:57We're going to go ahead and give it a pull that way,
09:58and hopefully she'll roll off
10:00and come out of the bush for us.
10:01I'm just worried that we're not going to be up high enough,
10:03but we'll give it a pull,
10:05and we'll see what comes loose.
10:07Tide's still pretty low,
10:08but no guts, no glory.
10:13Yee-ho!
10:24Oh, me.
10:25I think I buried the nose in there.
10:27Son of a buggerless snot.
10:34Okay.
10:35Just give it a little tug that way,
10:37so if we can get the nose out in front of this rock,
10:39then we can, yeah.
10:40Come on, baby.
10:41Jump off the rock for us.
10:43All right.
10:44Here we go.
10:45Try to watch yourself, Dave.
10:46Yep.
10:46Kind of in the bite, I guess.
10:53Yeah, I don't know.
10:55Yep.
10:56Yep.
10:57I think she's stationary now.
11:00Well, we gave her our best tug at low tide here.
11:03I mean, we cut off as many of the stops as we could,
11:05but she's just too catchy.
11:06We got such a downward slope here
11:08that every rock we're trying to pull it against,
11:10it's cutting up.
11:11And this is hemlock,
11:12which is the densest wood we have out here.
11:14She is a heavy, heavy stick.
11:16So I'm going to nip it off in half here,
11:19and we'll pull the tip out,
11:20and hopefully that'll give us
11:22a little bit better angle for a pull.
11:23Just got to persevere.
11:31Yeah, you're clear!
11:38Nice.
11:40Well, that did what she was supposed to do the first time
11:43with a much shorter stick.
11:45All right.
11:46Well, we got the light half.
11:48This is going to be the big, ugly mother,
11:52and a lot harder road to hoe.
11:56Hopefully she will pop for us,
11:58but we will have to see.
12:00All right, let's give it a top.
12:02Let's see if it pops.
12:03Do you want me to actually have a good hit?
12:04Yep.
12:11Okay, hold.
12:12Oh!
12:15I'm going to have to give it a little convincing.
12:19Pinched in pretty good now?
12:21I think just come up against it,
12:23and I might pop it.
12:24I'll try to give it a bump when you do.
12:32There's a really good set right here.
12:35See the trench he's got dug underwater there,
12:38and it goes up underneath the embankment here.
12:41You can see all the ritz that he's chewed up in there.
12:44Skunk cabbage he's digging up.
12:46I already put a couple traps in this area
12:48and had pretty good success.
12:52I'll go grab my traps.
12:54When I go into an area,
12:56I want to try to find the most likely runway
12:59that the beaver are traveling in.
13:01It's ready.
13:03Usually I kind of,
13:04using these conibear traps,
13:05I like a little deeper channel
13:07to where you can submerge the trap
13:09and conceal it a lot better,
13:10and then you just basically use guide sticks
13:13to funnel them right into the trap and everything.
13:16It's pretty effective.
13:18Throw a little beaver caster on there.
13:21Beaver have what they call a caster in the back of them,
13:25which is a type of a gland.
13:26That's how they mark their territory,
13:28and that pretty pungent odor.
13:31And I use that for my bait.
13:35Beaver came from a different pond,
13:39and beaver are very territorial.
13:42He'd take a piece of caster
13:45and put it in the area,
13:49and he'll go out of his way to find it.
13:53Yeah, he'd come swimming right into his happy home there,
13:57and he's going to be in for a surprise.
14:07Doing a lot of kneeling down
14:09and standing in the mud in this part of the world
14:12when you're doing jobs like this.
14:16I'm just trying to make this as streamlined as possible.
14:19Obviously, this is a use-at-your-own-risk type situation,
14:23but if I can eliminate, you know, hard edges,
14:26at least your toe will skip up over that
14:27if you're stumbling along,
14:28blind drunk in the middle of the night.
14:32Just like a rock.
14:35Now that the walkway's laid down,
14:36I'm going to get on with the handrail.
14:39This trail here, they've been using that.
14:42Hopefully it's a deer trail, not a wolf trail.
14:49I want to walk in there,
14:50but it looks like it gets too deep.
14:53I think I'm going to move to another spot.
14:58Ew.
15:04Got it.
15:06Oh, that's some heavy wood.
15:07It's low floating.
15:09Now that the hemlock's gone,
15:10I don't have to worry about a big boat coming through
15:12in the dark of night and hanging up
15:14and causing a whole bunch of havoc
15:15to life, limb, and property.
15:17It's up to us to take care of our ways and means out here,
15:20and I'm glad this adventure turned out well.
15:33Time I come by here,
15:35I wonder why
15:37those boots are there,
15:39why someone would leave their boots.
15:42I mean, they had a hole in them.
15:43They were useless,
15:44but you just never know
15:48why people do the things they do.
15:50I have no idea
15:52why somebody would nail their boots to the tree,
15:56and you definitely need your boots to hike out of here.
15:59I don't know if they're marking a spot,
16:02but maybe they left them there for Bigfoot.
16:04Who knows?
16:09There's a buck in here.
16:11He's been rubbing his antlers on this.
16:14Ah!
16:19Piles and piles.
16:21There's fresh deer poop.
16:30There ain't out here.
16:33Nothing.
16:35All my favorite spots,
16:37nothing around.
16:40Push on to another spot.
16:48Oh, man.
16:52I'm trying to get
16:53that little section of handrail
16:54put back up.
16:55If I was smart,
16:56I'd just tuck a rope
16:58and tie it from one to the other,
16:59put some yellow flags on it,
17:02but I have enough material
17:04I can actually pull off the handrail.
17:06This is going to be the base.
17:09If you've tipped over
17:10and fell through this brush,
17:12it's shallow,
17:13but you'd probably hit your head on a rock
17:14and then drown.
17:17If the tide's high.
17:19So, uh,
17:21just an ounce of prevention.
17:25Everybody out here
17:26does the best job they can
17:28with the tools they have
17:29to help their neighbors.
17:30In this case,
17:31I'm helping the whole community
17:32or anybody that uses
17:33this section of boardwalk,
17:35you know, after dark especially.
17:37This is close enough
17:39for SAM carpentry
17:41to get the job done
17:42and it'd be safe.
17:43It's definitely not, uh,
17:45there's no advanced engineering
17:47going on here.
17:50A couple of 45s put in
17:52in places really make things rigid.
17:54It's for rigidity.
17:56Not to be confused
17:58with frigidity.
18:01Other than the spring
18:02and the board itself,
18:04not bad.
18:07Not bad.
18:09I'm going to be putting
18:10a layer of mineral surface paper
18:12down on top
18:12of this boardwalk.
18:14Essentially,
18:14it's super heavy tar paper
18:16with gravel embedded in it.
18:19It's extremely durable
18:21and it's definitely non-skid.
18:23Not the easiest stuff
18:24to cut in the world.
18:25You can't make yourself
18:26slip on that stuff.
18:28The mineral surface paper
18:29is going to ensure
18:30that everybody out here,
18:31you know,
18:32does the best job they can.
18:37And that
18:39is the last staple.
18:41So,
18:42I get to, uh,
18:46kick my heels.
18:49Done.
18:50It turned out pretty damn sweet.
18:53For a quick job,
18:54everything's tied together.
18:56I need to get my
18:57tired ass back home
18:59and continue.
18:59I got a date
19:00with a brand new chainsaw.
19:07So,
19:08I know there was at least
19:08one good-sized spruce
19:10down on Memorial there.
19:11Yeah,
19:12I'd definitely like to go
19:13take a look at that.
19:15See if there's anything
19:16we can be done about it.
19:17The way this wind and swell
19:18is pushing,
19:19there might even be
19:20some stuff stowed up
19:20on Humpy Creek's shore there.
19:23Terry Metcalf
19:24is a wonderful person.
19:26She's been a big part
19:27of my life
19:27since I was a young boy
19:28and I consider her
19:29like an ante.
19:31And Terry's boat
19:32is not under operation.
19:34She can't go out
19:34and get firewoods,
19:35so myself and Dave
19:36are going to lend her a hand.
19:39Her beach is, uh,
19:40one of the main places
19:41that we gathered.
19:41The whole little revelry,
19:43you know,
19:43she's got a nice, uh,
19:44amphitheater that we've,
19:45we've built down there
19:46for our musical get-togethers
19:47and, uh,
19:48don't want to see her
19:49going cold through the winter.
19:53Look at that.
19:55What do you see?
19:57That log on the beach.
19:58It looks all right.
20:00Unless it's cottonwood,
20:01it's pretty bright,
20:02but I don't think so.
20:03I hope that's not cottonwood.
20:13Fuck.
20:26What do you think?
20:28I think she's spruced.
20:30Nice.
20:30Yeah, we can get that
20:31out of here.
20:32Yeah, let's do it right now
20:33and then we can anchor it.
20:34Yeah.
20:38Well, we found a nice freebie.
20:41Good volunteer laying on the beach.
20:44I'm going to try to get it out of here.
20:46All right.
20:47Three, two.
20:57That's good.
20:58Leave it here
20:58and then, uh,
20:59throw me your line.
21:00I got dropping tide right now.
21:02Got a pretty slow rolling surge,
21:05but if my boat was to go sideways
21:08while we're fiddling around
21:09with this log,
21:10we'll be camping for a few hours.
21:13I don't think any of us
21:14want to camp for a few hours,
21:15so I'm going to try
21:16to get this log out of here
21:18as quickly as possible.
21:20Go for it.
21:24Like a pro.
21:29Give it a bolt.
21:39Oh, that's a nice little stick.
21:41Didn't even take too much
21:42to get it out of there.
21:44Even a blind sea dog
21:45finds an acorn
21:46every once in a while.
21:48It's a nice stick.
21:50We want to get it out of there
21:52before it gets up
21:52on that reef, though.
21:54Yeah, yeah.
21:55You ready to jump in?
21:56Yeah.
22:02One.
22:05Nice.
22:07Well, this isn't
22:08a lot of wood for Terry yet.
22:09We'll trot along down the beach
22:11and see if we can't find
22:12another likely volunteer.
22:19Brand new saw.
22:22It's about halfway
22:23through its break-in,
22:24so I got to kind of
22:25be gentle with it.
22:26I'm going to try to get
22:27a few rounds of firewood cut here,
22:29but I had miscalculated
22:30the tide or wasn't
22:31paying any attention
22:32to the tide.
22:34Got that damn boardwalk done,
22:35and now it's time
22:36to do a few chores
22:37around here.
22:41Firewood's kind of like
22:41the never-ending story.
22:44If you don't enjoy it,
22:46then you need to move
22:47someplace else
22:47because it's quite the battle.
22:50Keep the house warm.
22:51But it's got to be
22:52a battle you enjoy.
22:54As you can see,
22:56if I don't want to have
22:57to put on my hip waders,
23:00I've got to beat this tide.
23:01The tide's going to come up
23:02all the way.
23:02I'll be standing in a foot
23:03of water here in an hour,
23:05so I've got a finite amount
23:06of time to get these rounds cut
23:08and get them up out of my way
23:11to where I can split them.
23:15It took me a number of years
23:16to get my firewood process
23:18dialed in.
23:20I can yard the log up
23:21next to the spot
23:22where I cut it,
23:23then I can lift it up
23:24next to the log splitter
23:25and then it goes
23:27into a basket
23:28and then from the basket
23:29it goes right
23:30to my front door,
23:31essentially.
23:33It's a pretty
23:33streamlined situation
23:35and there's very little
23:37bending over,
23:37packing armloads
23:38of firewood.
23:46Well, better hurry.
23:48Don't want to have
23:48to put my hip boots on.
23:51Well, I'm coming in
23:53to check my beaver trap
23:54that I set yesterday.
23:56If I don't have anything
23:58in there,
23:58I'm just going to pull the trap
23:59and then set it
24:02where I know
24:02I'll catch something.
24:09and then let's see here's some.
24:15Yeah, I didn't really
24:17have much faith in this set.
24:18I'm just going to pull it
24:19and move it.
24:21It takes a lot of practice
24:22to know how to catch a beaver.
24:24They're pretty smart animals.
24:26They'll flip your trap over
24:27and spring it
24:28and then go right across
24:29and take a on it
24:31and they're pretty cagey
24:32at times.
24:35Maybe a little better spot.
24:38Spot that we'll catch something
24:40at the first night,
24:42hopefully.
24:44I got another spot
24:45that I know
24:46where there's some beaver at.
24:47It's on a different road,
24:49though.
24:51Ooh, this isn't real good.
24:54I think anybody's been
24:55through there for a while.
24:59Need a chainsaw here.
25:02I didn't bring a chainsaw,
25:04so I don't know
25:04if I'm going to get
25:05through the air today
25:06or not.
25:11Dang.
25:14So this is actually
25:15a really good area in here.
25:17I was hunting with Curly one time
25:18and he got a big-ass buck
25:20right in and over here.
25:22Very nice one.
25:24So maybe I'll get his brother.
25:29Be as quiet as possible.
25:35Oh, I hear him.
25:37I hear him running.
25:37Oh, I hear him running.
25:53Damn it.
26:01Straight down.
26:02We'll never get him out of there.
26:12I've seen a buck.
26:13It was a little spike.
26:15But there's no way
26:17I can even get down there
26:20to even get...
26:21to get down there
26:22to get that thing back up here.
26:23It ain't happening.
26:25Let's get moving, man.
26:29Got my blood pumping,
26:30and that's for sure.
26:34There's a couple
26:34little sticks.
26:35That's a big one.
26:36Yep.
26:36That's kind of right.
26:37I mean, we can get over
26:38to this side of it.
26:39I think you can give it a jerk.
26:40Yeah, if we put a bunch
26:41of wraps on it.
26:43Okay, well, it's worth
26:44taking a look at.
26:45All right, we're going
26:45to move fast.
26:46I'm going to drop you off
26:47and back up.
26:54Holy crap.
26:56Yeah, we're not moving it.
26:58Not worth it?
26:59She's way big
27:00and all white.
27:01We're not moving it.
27:02Okay?
27:03She's big, wet, and heavy.
27:04So I'll just find
27:05a bunch of little sticks.
27:07We'll put them together,
27:09and hopefully that'll work out.
27:13That ain't much of a stick,
27:14but it's dry at least.
27:16So every little bit helps.
27:21We need more.
27:24Well, whenever you're beach logging,
27:26especially when there's
27:27any kind of surge,
27:27it's always almost necessary
27:30to have a two-man crew.
27:31So you can have one guy
27:33working the beach,
27:34one guy working the skiff.
27:35What that does is it helps
27:37alleviate the trauma
27:39of the boat actually up
27:41on the shoreline,
27:42especially if there's surge.
27:43You know, it's a lot of jobs
27:45out here take more than
27:47two pairs of paws
27:48to do correctly
27:49or to do efficiently
27:50at the very least,
27:51and this is definitely
27:53one of them.
27:55So we may be ruggedly individual,
27:59but a great deal
28:00of our tasks out here
28:01are team sports.
28:05You know, I think we're actually
28:06getting a pretty good run
28:08for Terry there.
28:09Nothing grand,
28:10but always better
28:11a little in the kitty
28:12than nothing.
28:13I hear some wind
28:14in the wire.
28:15Sounding pretty, uh,
28:17pretty damn serious.
28:19I think this might be
28:20our last adventure
28:22before we try
28:22to make our way
28:23back into harbor.
28:30Straight out.
28:31Straight out.
28:41Now that, ladies and gentlemen,
28:42is how it's done.
28:44I think we'll, uh,
28:46gather up what we've got here
28:47and, uh,
28:48head back for harbor.
28:50Not bad, though.
28:52That's something.
28:53That's something.
28:57Road's blocked.
28:58Big old spruce tree blew down.
29:00I think it's huge.
29:03Well, I guess
29:05if I'm gonna get any beavers,
29:07trap said,
29:08I'm gonna have to pack
29:09my gear in there.
29:11Get out of here.
29:17Well, look at that.
29:19I beat the tide.
29:20I need to kind of
29:21get these guys in position.
29:24These are big rounds.
29:27It's not a small log.
29:28I just need to present
29:29these guys
29:30so I can get two and two.
29:36I like it.
29:37getting with a friend,
29:38but it, you know,
29:40you ruin your odds there,
29:42you know?
29:43I end up talking too much
29:45and making too much noise,
29:47and then you gotta split the meat, too.
29:49I want the whole damn deer
29:51for myself.
29:59Well, this is a good haul, Dave.
30:00Yeah.
30:01Not a bad morning's work.
30:03Not at all.
30:04I'm gonna keep Terry
30:05from freaking out too bad
30:07as the frost starts dropping.
30:09She can breathe a couple breaths
30:10or at least a little easier.
30:12Got it.
30:14Well,
30:16once I get these tied up
30:18back up somewhere secure,
30:20we'll start working
30:21on processing them.
30:24See where he's
30:26bringing
30:27the clumps of sod
30:28up here.
30:30Got trails
30:31going every which direction.
30:33This is a good spot here.
30:35We're gonna
30:35get a trap
30:37set in there.
30:39There.
30:42There we go.
30:44Putting a little
30:46caster up there.
30:50That caster stinks.
30:53Setting traps
30:54in the rain
30:54is kind of a good deal
30:56because you're spreading
30:57human odors
30:57around throughout the area
30:59and rain helps
31:00to wash it away.
31:02Try to get him
31:04funneled in here somehow.
31:09A couple more.
31:12He'll come over here
31:13and what he'll do
31:14is he'll get down there
31:16and the stick
31:17will force him to dive
31:19and he'll dive right
31:20into that trap
31:21and he won't even know
31:23what the hell hit him.
31:27That'll call him
31:28right in here, man.
31:29He'll come charging
31:31into that.
31:33Wondering who the hell's
31:34in his food tits, Ash.
31:37Now he gets the hell
31:39out of here
31:40and let this rain
31:41wash my scent away
31:43and hopefully
31:44we'll come back
31:45a little later
31:46and have a beaver
31:47in there.
31:57It's all clear.
31:58Everything's clear.
32:00Don't want one of those
32:01to drop on your toe.
32:03I can pick up small rounds
32:04and toss them up here
32:05but I just can't move
32:05those big ones.
32:06It would be the end of me
32:07if I tried lifting
32:08one of them things up.
32:09This winch is getting old
32:10but this must be close
32:11to 800 pounds
32:13because of what the winch
32:16is rated for.
32:24But for the amount of time
32:25it takes to do this,
32:26it's a godsend
32:27to have some power.
32:29That's a week's firewood easy
32:31once I get her in the basket.
32:34and beat the tide.
32:37Oh, now I can just relax
32:39because the easy part's
32:40coming up.
32:43We're in that chair.
33:01Uh-oh.
33:19Houston?
33:21Sammy's screwed.
33:31My hoist just gave up on me.
33:34This thing's been around
33:35the block a few times
33:36and either the capacitor
33:39went out
33:40or something's went out
33:41in the switch.
33:42Something failed on it.
33:43It'll go backwards
33:45but it won't go forwards
33:47which leads me to believe
33:48that the capacitor's shot
33:50which I don't have one of them
33:51in my back pocket.
33:54So I'm going to have to
33:55try to manhandle
33:55these things up there
33:56which could be
33:57very interesting
33:59but I have a plan.
34:16I hope this thing
34:17doesn't get away on me
34:18and it'll end up
34:19in my basket.
34:20That's not
34:21the correct size.
34:23There we go.
34:24Not too bad.
34:25Not as bad as I thought.
34:26So.
34:30But normally I just lift them up
34:31and set them on the thing
34:32and it's
34:34sure picked in the
34:35inopportune time to die
34:36with the rest of this
34:36big log to do.
34:41I need to spend
34:42at least two hours a week
34:42down here doing this.
34:44This is about as good
34:45as it gets in this part
34:46of the world
34:46for getting your firewood
34:47next to your wood stove.
34:49When I hoist this up
34:50on that deck
34:51it'll be just through
34:52my front door
34:53and it's like 25 feet
34:55to the wood stove.
34:56So that's ideal.
34:58You don't want to have to go
34:59out to your wood shed
35:01pack wood back into your house.
35:03You should always have
35:04at least a week or two supply
35:06sitting right next to your door.
35:11Well it looks like
35:11this basket's ready to go.
35:13The tide's up
35:14at least a foot
35:15from where I was standing
35:16down there
35:16but no harm no foul.
35:18Have dry feet.
35:31See him to your tracks
35:33and the sawdust.
35:36Oh that's a big
35:38There was a big buck here.
35:40Look at that.
35:45I think he's too smart.
35:48He didn't get that big
35:49being stupid.
35:51I mean look at that.
35:54He's a big boy.
35:56He likes the sawdust.
35:58It must feel good
35:59on his little hooves.
36:01His big hooves.
36:03This is getting
36:04pretty frustrating.
36:05I'm not seeing anything.
36:08I'm hiking all over.
36:10I'm getting tired.
36:12And it's kind of
36:14turning into a bummer trip.
36:20I'm just going to press on
36:21and that's the only way
36:23I'm going to be successful
36:24is to continue
36:25and keep trying.
36:25and I'm going to get one
36:27sooner or later.
36:30I always do.
36:35Oh man.
36:37Whoa.
36:39Yard art.
36:40Cool.
36:41Damn.
36:42That's a nice rack.
36:44That's one to be proud of.
36:47Well, that's going on my wall.
36:50Lucky for me.
36:51That's really cool yard art.
36:54Boy, I'd love to see
36:55this guy living out here, man.
36:57That's a nice buck.
36:59Nice rack.
37:00I got something out of
37:02all my hard work today.
37:03I got some wall art.
37:05I'm hoping finding
37:06this beautiful set of antlers
37:08is going to be my good luck charm.
37:11That my next hunt,
37:12I'm going to get that
37:13mega buck like this guy.
37:15People pay good money
37:16to get their antlers
37:17to be a perfect mount like that.
37:19Very cool.
37:21It's mine now.
37:24Finders keepers,
37:26losers weepers.
37:28Mother nature
37:30changed the weather on us again.
37:32It's the snow here.
37:35Beavers don't care too much.
37:37I'm sure they're all set
37:39for the winter.
37:40Let's see here.
37:42The trap looks undisturbed.
37:45Too much human scent
37:47around it right now,
37:49I think.
37:52See my caster's still up there.
37:54Nothing came into it.
37:56Near my other trap there.
38:01I just really hope
38:02I got something in there.
38:03Hopefully they came in
38:06a lot of times, though.
38:07They won't, you know.
38:08I mean, it takes a couple of days
38:11for the human scent
38:12to wash away.
38:13Hopefully it rained enough
38:14that it did.
38:24Let's see.
38:24I do believe we got a beaver.
38:33There's his butt.
38:35The traps are pretty deadly.
38:38Yeah, it looks like a big daddy beaver.
38:43Definitely a big, mature one.
38:47He's an old-timer.
38:49We're beginning to pull him up here.
38:55Well, now that I got this guy here,
38:57you know, the road will be a little safer
38:59and I'll take him home
39:01and skin him out.
39:02You know, make something
39:03out of the hide eventually.
39:05Probably eventually tan it.
39:07The meat, I might even make a stew out of it.
39:10I don't know.
39:10You know, and then the rest of it there
39:13I'll just probably use for trapping bait.
39:16And now I got a lot of work ahead of me
39:18before this beaver's done.
39:20So this guy's probably 45, 50 pounds.
39:24And I'm pretty good with the outcome.
39:25It was kind of a little bit iffy there at the start,
39:28but, you know, once we got lined out,
39:32it all came together.
39:34I'm pretty stoked about it.
39:36It's a good way to start the winter.
39:39First beaver of the year.
39:53Well, how'd you like waking up
39:54to the sound of dueling chainsaws?
39:56Oh, my gosh.
39:57Hey, this is...
39:58How are you doing this morning?
39:59This is wonderful.
40:01You're welcome.
40:01Yay.
40:02Found a few dry sticks for you.
40:04Yeah.
40:04I knew you were having a hard time with your skiff.
40:06not operating correctly, so...
40:08It set me on the beach all summer, pretty much.
40:11That's a dandy.
40:13So you're going to give me inadequacy complexes.
40:16I'm looking for big firewood.
40:18I love this.
40:20This is beautiful.
40:21Because I was actually, um...
40:23I'm kind of not burning too much wood.
40:27Is your crawler working?
40:29My crawler's working.
40:30Oh, good.
40:31I'll help.
40:31Cool.
40:32Okay, what did...
40:33Pick a log.
40:34Pick a log.
40:43Nobody can ever say that, uh, Terry Metcalfe is some feeble old woman.
40:49She's a champ, man.
40:50She came down there with a saw bigger than both mine and Squibs,
40:53and she bucked into the largest log that we had.
40:57She's got a lot of spirit, a lot of spark,
40:59and, uh, it really makes me happy to see her in action.
41:06That's all right.
41:08It's like Tetris.
41:25Oh, feeling a little bit better about the, uh, the frost line coming around?
41:30I'm overwhelmed, so to speak.
41:33I can get this from here now.
41:35Oh, I mean, I am so thankful.
41:38You do plenty for us all, Terry.
41:40Happy to help.
41:42Terry is family.
41:44I am really relieved, uh, to have helped her.
41:46She was really stressed out about this.
41:49Good hanging.
41:50It's no joke when you're out of firewood in the middle of winter.
41:53Yay, thank you so much.
41:53We'll catch you on the plug.
41:54Thank you.
41:55The reward was right there, just in her expression.
41:58Yeah, I'm not used to having people work so hard for me.
42:01Well, full speed ahead, like you say, the days are getting shorter.
42:04No time to burn.
42:06Take care.
42:11Good to be home.
42:13Man, that's a nice rack.
42:15I sure wish I could have found a buck with a rack like that on it today.
42:20He's a beauty.
42:22I stay out here because I love hunting and fishing.
42:25You can't be successful on every hunt, but I love this way of life, and I just want to
42:31keep doing it as long as I can.
42:42This guy, he's been around, uh, been a while.
42:45He's an old deaver there, man.
42:48He's trying to say how old he is.
42:57Flappy tail.
43:04When I was a kid, this is all I ever dreamt of, was living this type of life, and now
43:10here
43:10I am.
43:11I'm living my dream.
43:12I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.
43:17Our safety net out here is each other, especially with people that we know and love that actually
43:22contribute to everybody's livelihood and well-being out here.
43:25You never leave your neighbor stranded.
43:37I like the smell of sweet spruce.
43:39This is a real nice log.
43:43One of the blessings that I can say that I've had in my lifetime is I've had a lot of
43:47personal
43:47time to contemplate actual reality.
43:50And I guarantee you that chasing the almighty dollar is probably the biggest waste of time
43:54anybody can possibly do.
43:56Wood for the stove, venison in the freezer, go out and catch a fish.
44:02That's my wealth.
44:03You really can't ask for any more than that.
