00:00Real vehicles, the latest tech, and the pros who make it happen.
00:03If it runs, rolls, or rips, we've got it here on Motorhead Garage, presented by NHLU Advanced Rust Protection.
00:10Let's get to work.
00:16If you go to BestBuyAutoEquipment.com, you will find everything you need for your shop or your home garage,
00:21from lifts to tire mounting and balancing equipment.
00:24And Jake, there's a lot of places to buy stuff like that, but why should they go to BestBuy Auto?
00:29I'd say it's our customer service.
00:31I mean, we've been in the industry for 40 years, and it takes something special to keep that going.
00:38And I've always thought that's our customer service, our commitment to our sales team and to our customers.
00:42And that's just about helping customers, right?
00:44So we don't want to sell you the most expensive equipment.
00:46We want to really figure out what you need.
00:48And so we ask the right questions, and the sale will fall out of that.
00:53The right equipment will fall out of that.
00:54Why is it so important to take care of customers like that?
00:56It's been our dad's ethic since the very beginning of the company, and I think it's why we survived.
01:0040 years ago, he started the company in his garage when we were just, before I was born, actually.
01:07He used to have lunch underneath the desk before I could even read.
01:10Yeah, his ethic was he hated the hard sell.
01:12Like, he hated that pushy salesman routine.
01:15None of our salesmen have ever worked on commission for that reason.
01:17He just wants the salesman to help the customer.
01:20Everything else can fall away.
01:21All you need to do is just listen to the customer.
01:23What are their actual needs?
01:25Those things change based on what they're trying to do.
01:27So what's the job?
01:28We always say the right equipment for the right job at the right price.
01:32What are some of the things you see that indicate that you've been doing things right for 40 years,
01:36other than the fact that you've survived for 40 years?
01:38Yeah, it's reviews and customers coming back over and over again or getting, like, a customer calling in saying,
01:44oh, yeah, my friend down the street or somebody I've known for a really long time has had this lift,
01:48and they just love the customer service.
01:50They feel like you guys did them right, and so I trust you.
01:53I'm coming in.
01:54How important is it to have the right employees here making it all happen?
01:57That's, like, a number one.
01:58Some of our employees have been here.
02:01I mean, it's almost embarrassing, really, because we've grown up with the company,
02:04and they've been here for the last 30 years or more.
02:07And so they've seen us through all the different eras and, like, being a little snot-noted teenager,
02:12like, working in the warehouse myself, you know, and then moving up inside.
02:16Yeah.
02:17What is your customer base and who's buying from you?
02:20So it's anybody that's really had an interest in working on cars themselves at their house, right?
02:25So we sell to home garage enthusiasts that are building out a garage for themselves, their dream garage,
02:29or to, like, a commercial fleet, dealerships, shops.
02:32We sell them all.
02:34Now, Brother Max here is the other part of the operation, co-owner along with Jake.
02:38Max, you guys have such a wide variety of clientele.
02:41You've got folks that are using your equipment in their garage at home,
02:44and you've got dealerships that are using, you know, the high-end equipment.
02:47So how do you cater to everybody?
02:48Yeah, we like to use the terminology that not everybody needs a Mercedes.
02:52You know, some people are happy with the features of a Honda.
02:55So, I mean, obviously, there's a difference there in features,
02:57and that's kind of how we like to look at equipment as well.
02:59So, I mean, not everyone needs to get the Mercedes of a Lyft.
03:03They're okay with the features of a Honda version of the Lyft.
03:06That's the way we like to look at it.
03:07We use a tier system of good, better, best.
03:10So if you're looking for the best thing out there, of course we have it, and we can offer that
03:14to you.
03:14But if you're looking for something a little more affordable, then we have that as well for you.
03:18And quality is still important no matter what level.
03:20Yes, quality is definitely always important.
03:22We want to make sure we're getting you something that is good quality,
03:24that we can stand behind, and we're okay with giving to you as well.
03:27I've gone on to BestBuyAutoEquipment.com,
03:29and I see you have a lot of recognizable names in the business, some really high-end stuff.
03:34And you also have a brand I hadn't seen before.
03:36It's the Nationwide Line of Equipment.
03:39So what kind of features do those have, and who's buying those?
03:42Yeah, so we brought in our own line.
03:44It's the Nationwide Line here.
03:46We kind of have the premium-style version of the lift.
03:49That's the one sitting behind us here.
03:51Also, we have the more economic version,
03:53so it's still going to give you the same good quality for a little bit better price.
03:56You get more features with the more premium one,
03:59but for the lower-priced ones, you still get most of the same features,
04:02but you do lose out on a couple, such as the single-side lock release,
04:05more adjustability in the arms, and some of the other features that come along with that.
04:09How important is it for you to still maintain the quality at any price level?
04:12Very important, yeah.
04:13So we definitely want to keep something that's high-quality that we feel good about selling
04:17because I think that's kind of part of our ethic in making sure that we give customers good quality product
04:22and also give them what they need.
04:23We don't want to give them anything that's not going to work for them
04:25or not going to be up to their expectations.
04:28And to that end, how much does customer service help with that?
04:31What kind of questions are you getting from people that call in or write in to you?
04:35Yeah, definitely.
04:36So questions mostly are going to be people kind of figuring what they need to do
04:39or what they're looking to accomplish.
04:41So we like to talk to the customer and make sure we understand what they're actually looking to do
04:45and whether that means they need a four-post for storing vehicles, stacking one on top of the other,
04:49or if they're more towards the service line of work where they're going to get a two-post
04:53that's going to give you more open access to the vehicle.
04:56So kind of just calling us and figuring out what's the best route for them to go
05:00and get them the right product for what they're doing.
05:02If you want the right equipment for the right job at the right price, get it from the right people.
05:06Go to BestBuyAutoEquipment.com.
05:09Lots more to come on Motorhead Garage presented by NHLU Advanced Rust Protection,
05:14including John and Len with a tech tip.
05:16We'll be right back.
05:19Motorhead Garage presented by NHLU Advanced Rust Protection,
05:23brought to you by Pin2Vin, turning vehicle parts into traceable property.
05:30AMSOIL, protection you demand, performance you deserve.
05:34And by Nelson's Ford Trucks, make power strokes great again.
05:40Here at NHLU Advanced Rust Protection, I've learned from Joe that you can protect a vehicle,
05:44of course, from the very start.
05:45It's going to stay protected for its entire life.
05:47What about an older vehicle like this F-350?
05:49There's a lot of rust under here.
05:51Is it too late to save this?
05:52Yeah, but there's a lot of life left in that diesel motor.
05:55Somebody comes in like this who has a rusty undercarriage, says,
06:00I love the truck.
06:01I have a lot of life left in my motor.
06:03I wish I had done this several years ago.
06:06I want to preserve it.
06:07So we developed this about 15 years ago.
06:09This service is called Rust-O-Ration.
06:11And so basically what we do is we bring the vehicle in.
06:14We look at the, we assess it.
06:17You have to tell us if it's structurally sound.
06:19We assess it.
06:20If it's a candidate, we'll descale the rust, bring it down as close to a surface rust as possible.
06:25And that's that loose rust that just flakes off.
06:27Gone.
06:28And we use a rust converter, one that we developed in-house to work in conjunction with our oil.
06:34So it doesn't have any polymers or any sealers in it.
06:38It allows the oil to penetrate once the rust has been converted, displaced moisture and oxygen, which is what you
06:43want.
06:44That will neutralize as much of the rust as possible.
06:47When that's done, then we'll treat it with our oil.
06:49And that will preserve that truck as long as you come in for annual applications.
06:54It'll stave the rust where it's at and it'll give you 10 or 15 years of life to that vehicle.
06:59Which will catch up with that engine, by the way, which has probably got 10 years.
07:03That's going to last a long, long time.
07:04How comprehensive is the coverage underneath the vehicle?
07:07Well, what we're going to do is we're going to go over it thoroughly with needle descalers, with brushes, wire
07:13brushes, automatic brushes.
07:14And then we're going to get everything cleaned as possible.
07:17Another very important thing that we just began doing, we have learned a lot from the people in this industry.
07:23There's another company out here.
07:25It's called Rust Crushers.
07:26And he's actually developed a frame flusher.
07:30So what we've done is we've blown the frame out because you want to get a clean surface to start
07:36with, okay?
07:37We did not realize that you really need to flush it out, and you need to flush it out with
07:42high pressure.
07:43If, let's say, we lived on a dirt road for 10 years, there could be an inch of dirt inside
07:47the frame.
07:48We've got to remove that first.
07:50We'll flush that out with the frame flusher, and then we will descale and mitigate the rust with our rust
07:59converter,
07:59which turns it to a zinc oxide, and then we apply an oil-based rust poofing.
08:05Why does the oil fail if you don't prep the surface properly?
08:08Well, first of all, it would be like a sponge.
08:10Like if you were to put your first coat of paint on raw wood, it becomes like a primer, okay?
08:17So what we're doing is we're bringing it down to a surface rust so that we actually can penetrate, okay?
08:22Otherwise, you could still do it without removing the rust to that degree, but you would probably come back in
08:29six months for a second coat.
08:31What you want is full penetration down to the base metal to displace moisture and oxygen.
08:36Now, you flush the frame.
08:37You've protected the surface underneath.
08:40That story goes away.
08:42The proof of that having happened goes away once this rolls out of the shop.
08:44Which is why we built Rust Facts.
08:46It gives you a place to document all of your proactive activities, right?
08:52So everything that you've done will be attached to a VIN.
08:55It will be online, and it will be something that you can claim.
08:58It is going to give you the ability to sell your vehicle later on and show that you were a
09:04good steward of your vehicle, right?
09:05So you're not looking for an accident report.
09:09You're actually looking for what did the guy do to prevent the problems, okay?
09:12And this is what Rust Facts will do.
09:14Joe, once you look at one of these vehicles that's undergone the rust duration, it looks amazing underneath.
09:18It does.
09:19And it's actually, you've done something that doesn't make the appearance look good.
09:23It actually is proactive.
09:25It's actually stopping the rust.
09:26I mean, paint makes it look good.
09:28But this is something that's going to extend the life of the vehicle.
09:31And the vehicles that are sold that have been treated by us, in fact, they're in very high demand.
09:36The dealers around here love it when they get a trade in one of our vehicles because now they have
09:42a vehicle that is structurally sound.
09:44They actually can give the person trading in the vehicle a fair price for it, which helps with customer retention.
09:53But they also have something to put in their lot.
09:55It's not a rust bucket they're going to auction off.
09:58So there's a lot of people that would love to buy a truck that's been well taken care of, a
10:02proactive type of a person, a good steward of his truck.
10:06And we're going to be able to give them a place to not only document that and store that information,
10:11but they're going to be able to put it online and sell it.
10:14You can be a good steward of your vehicle.
10:17Protect the vehicle while you own it.
10:18Protect it going forward for the next owner.
10:20Go to NHLU.com to find out more.
10:31Let's see, J-hooks, IL adapters, IL clone, PTB adapters.
10:37Man, you've got to be a rocket scientist to put these wipers on today's cars.
10:42I'll get Lynn to do it.
10:43Let's talk about something a little bit easier.
10:45Wiper systems and the motor, how do they work?
10:48Well, you can see here, if your wipers aren't working, you're not going to see a lot.
10:52What's going on?
10:53Well, underneath the cowling of your car, you've got all kinds of stuff.
10:55The wiper blades is really all that's showing in the arms.
10:58Underneath, you have linkage, wiper motors, gearboxes, and everything called a transmission.
11:03Better yet, let me show you to an action.
11:05You actually go down here.
11:06You can turn the wipers on.
11:07You have to have your car on run, obviously.
11:09You've got power going to it.
11:10Then you turn them on low.
11:12When you turn them on low, there they go.
11:14That's called a wiper transmission.
11:16That's your wiper motor unit right there.
11:18And your transmission and linkage is all up under the cowling.
11:21Your wipers would attach to each one of these ends you would see there.
11:24You put it on high.
11:25It's a shunted motor.
11:26Now we go to full speed.
11:27That thing's cranking on high.
11:29Also, with your wiper motors, you can actually push the washer.
11:32So if you push the little washer switch in, what's happening there?
11:36You've got a washer pump and a washer motor.
11:38You see the fluid go through when you push it.
11:40That's what's spraying up on your windshield.
11:42A good look at the wipers and how they work.
11:44Now the actual motor or the pump itself, you can see it's located right down there on the actual reservoir.
11:49Sometimes check your manufacturer specifications.
11:51It could be located all over the car.
11:54Now to test that, what do you want to do?
11:55You really just want to make sure there's 12 volts down there.
11:58We're going to unplug it.
11:59That's the wiper motor.
12:00That's actually the washer motor that's going to run the water up on your windshield.
12:05We're going to T-pin it.
12:06We're going to make sure the T-pins don't touch.
12:08And then what we're going to do is we're going to run it.
12:09We're going to put the DVM on volts.
12:11And we want to make sure while we're running it, do we have 12 volts to that plug.
12:16Now if you have 12 volts to the plug, it's going to go across it right here.
12:20You see we're pushing the button.
12:22We got our 13 or 12 volts to the plug.
12:24That's a good thing.
12:25Now if it wasn't spraying, you may have an issue.
12:28What do I mean by an issue?
12:29Well, you could have clogged waxed right there.
12:31It may be clogged up or your hoses under your cowling may be off.
12:35Len, I could have the best washer system, the best wipers in the world, and they're still not going to
12:40work if my windshield's a mess.
12:42Yeah, that's correct.
12:43I mean those wipers really only cover a certain amount of the window, the minimum amount needed to see out
12:47of it.
12:47Eventually, you're going to have to clean the rest of it and maybe wash your car at the same time.
12:51Does Amsoil have a product for that?
12:53We have several.
12:55In the case of the windshield, we've got our glass cleaner.
12:58You would think that it wasn't something that we spent a pile of time on, but glass cleaner, as I
13:02tell this story sometimes, one of the most researched products at the company.
13:06It has to pass through so many people that have a peaked interest in how it works.
13:10It can't streak.
13:11It has to smell a certain way.
13:12So our glass cleaner, there's a lot of research that goes into it, so it's been highly refined.
13:17It works extremely well is what I'm trying to say.
13:19We also have a full line of car care products, some of which are brand new, some of which we've
13:24had.
13:24We've kind of launched them in tiers, but we've got products to keep the exterior, interior of your vehicle looking
13:30really good.
13:31Yeah, you expect Amsoil just to be an oil company?
13:33Well, it's so much more.
13:35Lynn just told you about the detail products and so many other products you can find at amsoil.com.
13:41Still more to come on Motorhead Garage presented by NHLU Advanced Rust Protection, including the best way to keep your
13:47classic car sealed tight.
13:50But first, I want to tell you about a new partner here at Motorhead Garage.
13:53It's Motivator Coffee, and it is the official coffee of Motorhead Garage.
13:58It's premium Arabica coffee.
14:00It's ethically sourced and precision roasted, and this is the great part.
14:03There's a purpose behind every cup because Motivator supports automotive trades education and the next generation of craftspeople.
14:11So I want to welcome to the Garage Motivator.
14:13You can learn more at motivator.com.
14:16We'll be right back with more Motorhead Garage.
14:18Stay tuned.
14:19From our Mouse Blocker studio, this is Motorhead Garage presented by NHLU Advanced Rust Protection.
14:27Fall is in the air, and that means it's almost time to put away some of your summer toys.
14:32Your RV, your boat, your motorcycle, maybe that classic car you only drive when the weather is nice.
14:37But while they're sitting over the winter, mice can move in, and that's where they build nests, they chew up
14:43upholstery, and they can damage wiring under your hood.
14:47Mouse Blocker uses high-powered ultrasonic technology to help keep mice and other rodents away in the first place.
14:53So before you put your summer toys away, protect them for the months ahead.
14:58Keep mice out with Mouse Blocker.
14:59We do here at the Mouse Blocker studio.
15:02You can find Mouse Blocker at mouseblocker.com.
15:06Now, with vehicles, any vehicle, the rubber seals are the first thing to go.
15:11We all know that, Danny.
15:12They degrade over the years.
15:13Why do they go so fast?
15:14Well, rubber tends to biodegrade, and especially the seals that were used on these cars originally, it was actually a
15:20latex seal.
15:21A lot of people don't know latex is a natural material, and it biodegrades quick.
15:24So, replacing your rubber seals can be tricky, especially on a street ride like this.
15:29How can steel rubber make it more simple?
15:31Yeah, you know, replacing them can be tricky because you're trying to find the right fit.
15:35It's very specific sometimes.
15:37So, if you're working on a car, what we have done is made custom on-demand catalogs.
15:42So, if you've got a 33 Ford, we can send you a catalog for a 33 Ford with the bits
15:47and pieces that we offer for it.
15:48The chassis is not steel.
15:49It's not from 1933.
15:51The OEM parts won't fit it exactly like it would on an original 1933.
15:57So, you're going to have to find seals that work for this car.
16:01Because you guys have, what, 15,000 different parts in your catalog?
16:04Yeah, we have a lot, but we make it real easy for each person because we narrow it down for
16:08what they're looking for.
16:09Just like this, we would probably point you towards our street rod catalog, which has everything for the engine, compartment,
16:16the glass, your doors, your trunk, all in sections.
16:19So, you can go through the vehicle and find out exactly what you need.
16:22So, let's look at this vehicle in particular and maybe some of the common areas where seals start to go
16:26bad.
16:26And where seals are used, a lot of folks think about the windows, but they don't think about the rest
16:29of the car.
16:29Yeah, so like I mentioned, you know, from the radiator and the cow, you've got a seal.
16:34You know, originally those keep fumes out of the cowl vent.
16:36The cowl vent's not in this vehicle like it was originally.
16:40Even stuff like the headlights, the mounting pads for those, the side mirrors.
16:44Since this is a convertible, you've got a header bow, which goes across the top of your windshield.
16:48You've got the windshield gasket, your belt line or window felts, the fuzzies, your door seal.
16:54So, there's a lot of rubber.
16:55And then, you know, your trunk, your bumpers, all those things are in that catalog and are parts that you're
17:01going to need to make it weatherproof.
17:02So, it's easy enough to find a seal that you have there, maybe cut a sample off of it or
17:06something and compare it to the sample kit or something in the catalog.
17:09But what about like the trunk of this now?
17:11There's no seal back here.
17:13And just by eyeballing it, you can't tell exactly what you need.
17:15So, if we want to add one, how can I tell what I need there?
17:18I can't tell just by eyeballing it.
17:20Yeah.
17:20So, this piece has a flange that goes down in here.
17:23So, one thing that we suggest is taking a piece of putty, sticking it down in the channel, closing the
17:28trunk or door.
17:30And then, that will give you a mold of what that gap size is.
17:34You can then take that, get a measurement off of it.
17:38And you can see where that channel hits.
17:40And then, you can take your measurement.
17:42Maybe you go a sixteenth inch over, but that will be what gap size you're trying to fill.
17:48Well, that's one place we want to seal where we didn't have one.
17:50You noticed a couple of things here when you were looking at the car over here.
17:53And, of course, anybody can see that one on the A-pillar there.
17:56This was a custom kind of cut piece that ended up working.
18:01But, now, 18 years later, it's starting to fall apart.
18:05And, visually, this catches the eye really easy.
18:08So, that's definitely going to be something that we want to replace.
18:11And it's very easy to do so with some of the peel and stick.
18:13And then, inside the door, there's another seal that you noticed is going bad.
18:17And this one's easy to see as well.
18:18Yeah.
18:18So, again, another seal that was just something that would work.
18:21That uses a cheaper, pressure-sensitive tape.
18:24And we use a 3M tape.
18:26So, it's a lot more substantial than what that is.
18:28And it's not going to degrade like that does.
18:30Hey, if there's a product you want the world to see, send me a note.
18:33I'm at Dave at MotorheadGarage.TV.
18:36Motorhead Garage, presented by NHOU Advanced Rust Protection, rolls on right after this.
18:42Motorhead Garage, presented by NHOU Advanced Rust Protection, is brought to you by V2M Incorporated.
18:49We don't guess.
18:50We listen.
18:52Madden Madness, built for the road, not for the show.
18:56And by Black Bear Off-Road, America's small-town off-road shop.
19:02I tell you, folks are loving the sneak previews of our brand-new Muscle Car Series.
19:07And if you want to see more, you can find the full episodes on our YouTube channel.
19:11This week, a visit to the Henry Ford Museum.
19:13It's spectacular.
19:15And it is there we learn why the Mustang was and is such a big part of the American story.
19:21I'm Matt Anderson, curator of transportation here at the Henry Ford.
19:27Well, part of the reason Mustang sold so well is that there was just nothing else like it on the
19:31market when it was introduced in April of 1964.
19:34And, in fact, its success was so great that it launched a whole new class of automobiles, what we call
19:39pony cars.
19:40And, you know, the idea behind a pony car is that it's fairly small on what we might call a
19:44compact car wheelbase by the standards of that time in the mid-1960s.
19:48And it had the classic sporty look where you have the long hood, the short rear deck, right, the long
19:54hood suggesting big engine under the hood there, the short rear deck suggesting kind of live speed and performance and
20:02flexibility in terms of how the car handled.
20:04And, I mean, that long hood, short rear deck formula is as old as the Stutz Bearcat in 1912, if
20:10not even a little older than that.
20:12Pony cars proliferated very quickly, though, after Mustang's success.
20:16Think about Chevrolet and the Camaro in 1967, Pontiac and the Firebird in 1967, AMC and the Javelin for 1968,
20:24Dodge and the Challenger for 1970.
20:26So everybody wants to kind of get in on that action.
20:30And the pony car itself very, very well, following on the heels of Mustang's success.
20:35But it's interesting to look back now here where we are in the early 2020s, mid-2020s, of all of
20:43those pony cars that we introduced,
20:44Mustang is the only one that has remained in production nonstop for 60 years now and going further.
20:50So it's a testament, I think, to the quality and the lasting brand appeal of that car.
