00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio on the day that one of the most exciting events in the
00:37UK calendar breaks out.
00:40Of course, it's the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
00:43And throughout this month, more than 3,000 events will take place across that beautiful city.
00:48And they're not all ticket events because, of course, a lot of them take place on the street and in
00:53corners and so forth.
00:55And what used to happen when I was a young chap in my 20s, there was a crowd called, they
01:01call themselves the Tube Theatre.
01:03And you would join them, say, at Baker Street on a particular platform and pay your fiver or whatever it
01:08was.
01:09And then a crowd of you, including four or five of them who were actors, would sort of casually enter
01:15a tube train.
01:16And they would then break out into this theatre act.
01:20All the other passengers had no idea what was going on.
01:23They thought, what on earth is this?
01:25We all knew it was part of the theatre.
01:27What about you?
01:28Have you seen any great street theatre?
01:31Not theatre, but I did a trip to Italy this summer, which was lovely.
01:35And in Florence, just walking down the street, suddenly this, I don't know, 20-piece a cappella group started singing.
01:41And they weren't trying to raise money or anything like that.
01:43They just had their little banner with their logo on.
01:45And they were brilliant.
01:46Everyone was just crowding round and wanting more.
01:48I've got a little video on my phone.
01:50But they were fantastic.
01:51Lovely.
01:51And such a setting as well.
01:52Lovely.
01:53Lovely.
01:54Excellent stuff.
01:54Now, Rachel, who have we got?
01:55Welcome back.
01:57Cammie Lovett.
01:58Thank you, Nick.
01:59You had a bit of good luck, I think, yesterday.
02:02But good luck to you again today.
02:03And you're joined by Annie Humphries, a retired teacher from Basildon.
02:08Current hobbies include yoga and singing in a laryngectomy choir.
02:13And tell me this.
02:14Tell us a little bit about this choir.
02:16Well, it was founded by a Belgian doctor called Thomas Moores.
02:21Yes, and it's part of an initiative to set up a new cancer charity called Child Cancer.
02:27And there are six of us in total.
02:30And there are six of us in total at the moment.
02:31And we actually perform the backdrop of professional singers.
02:37And we've just recently completed a performance at the Belgian embassy.
02:42Well done.
02:43Excellent.
02:44Well, good luck to you, Annie.
02:45We look forward to seeing how you both get on.
02:47Let's have a big round of applause for Annie and Cammie Lovett.
02:56And over in the corner, Susie, of course, and Giles Brandreth.
03:01Giles, Giles, last year you were at Edinburgh Festival.
03:04I've been at the Fringe a number of times over the years.
03:06In fact, I've been going back off and on for the last 20 years, and I love it.
03:10Excellent.
03:11Well, more from you later on, Giles, but now it's Cammie.
03:13Let us go.
03:14Hi, Rachel.
03:15Hi, Cammie.
03:16Can I have a cousin, please?

03:41And another.
03:44O.
03:47And a vowel, please.
03:49And the last one.

04:27Eight.
04:28An eight.
04:29Cammy?
04:30Morals.
04:31And Annie?
04:33Moralize.
04:34Ooh, clever.
04:35Excellent.
04:36Very well done.
04:37Well done.
04:40Wow.
04:42And Giles?
04:43Well, I'm going to try an alternative eight-letter word.
04:45Royalisms?
04:47Royalism.
04:48A royalism.
04:49Does that exist?
04:49Somebody who is...
04:50Yeah, that is essentially the state of being a royalist.
04:53So we practise royalism in this country.
04:55Oh, so royalists believe in royalism.
04:58Exactly.
04:59Very good.
05:00Thank you, Giles.
05:01Eight points to Annie.
05:02And it's Annie's letters game now.
05:04Annie?
05:05Good afternoon, Rachel.
05:06Afternoon, Annie.
05:07May I start with a consonant, please?
05:09May I start with P?
05:12And another.
05:14D?
05:15And a vowel.
05:17I?
05:19And a vowel.
05:21U?
05:23And a consonant.
05:25N?
05:27And a consonant, please.
05:30Q?
05:32And a vowel.
05:34O?
05:36And a consonant, please.
05:39T?
05:40And a vowel, please.
05:42And a vowel, please.
05:45Standby.
06:17Annie?
06:18Seven.
06:19Seven, thank you.
06:20Cami?
06:20Six.
06:21And your six?
06:22Quoted.
06:24Quoted.
06:25Annie?
06:26Pointed.
06:27Excellent.
06:28Very good.
06:28Very good indeed, yeah.
06:30And Giles?
06:31Well, I'm going to try a risky word here.
06:34Does the word coined, Q-U-O-I-N-E-D, have some association with the world of printing?
06:40It does, actually, yeah.
06:41It's normally architecture, so it's an external angle of a building, a cornerstone.
06:46If you like, but in printing, it is a wedge, a coin, is a wedge or expanding mechanical
06:50device used for locking the letterpress form into the, what they call the case or the chase.
06:56So, it has.
06:57Very good.
06:58Coined.
06:59We'll be there for seven then.
07:00Well done.
07:01Annie, well done.
07:02Fifteen points.
07:03Cami yet to score.
07:04Cami, maybe you'll do it on a numbers game now.
07:07Two yards, please, Rachel.
07:08Thank you, Cami.
07:10Two from the top row, four little ones coming up for the first numbers game to date, and
07:15they are nine, six, five.
07:18Another nine, 25, and 100.
07:23And the target, 891.
07:25891.
07:27891.
07:57Cammie?
07:58891.
08:00Annie?
08:01891.
08:02Well done, both of you.
08:05Cammie?
08:06100 times 9.
08:07100 times 9, 900.
08:10Take away 9.
08:11Lovely.
08:11It's very easy, that one.
08:13And Annie?
08:14Same way.
08:17Got it.
08:19Well done.
08:21So 25 plays 10 as we go into our first tea time teaser, which is 9, Josh.
08:31And the clue, those condoms don't belong to you, give them back.
08:36Those condoms don't belong to you, give them back.
08:56Welcome back.
08:57Um, I left you with a clue, those condoms don't belong to you, give them back.
09:02And the answer is Johnny's.
09:07Annie on 25, Cammie on 10, and it's Annie's letters game.
09:13Annie?
09:15Um, consonant please, Rachel.
09:17Thank you, Annie.
09:18And another consonant please.
09:21R.
09:22And a vowel please.
09:24A.
09:26And another vowel please.
09:28I.
09:29And another vowel please.
09:33E.
09:33Consonant please.
09:36Z.
09:37Consonant please.
09:40T.
09:42Um, consonant please.
09:46G.
09:47And a vowel please.
09:49And the last one, O.
09:52Countdown.
09:53C.
10:24Annie. Seven. Cami. Seven. Annie. Agister. Cami. Storage. Storage. Very good. We happy? Yes. Agister. This is something to do
10:41with agriculture. This is rural. Yes. This is pastoral. Is it the same thing? It is pastoral. And Agister is
10:46somebody who takes in or feeds livestock in return for payment. Okay. Yeah. Thank you.
10:52All right. 32 plays 17. And Cami, letters game. Constant, please, Rachel. Thank you, Cami. P. And another. R. And
11:05a vowel. U. And another vowel.
11:09A. And another vowel. O. One more, please. E. Consonant. S. And another one. N. And another consonant, please.
11:31And lastly, S. Countdown.
11:35S. Countdown.
12:05Cami. Sex. Annie. Six. Two sixes. Yes, Cami. Aprons. And pauses.
12:16Pauses, absolutely fine. Yep. Both good. Happy with both? Very happy. And what news from the corner, Giles?
12:22I saw Persona. I saw Persona there. And I thought maybe we're allowed Persona in the plural. I don't know
12:27whether it would be Persona-i or would it be Persona-as?
12:29Either. You can have either. So you can have Persona-as. For eight. Very good.
12:32Eight points, Persona-as. Well done, Giles.
12:38Anything else, Susie? No, mine actually. Parsons was another one for seven.
12:43Thank you. All right. 38 to 23. Annie's still in the lead. And it's Annie's numbers game. Annie.
12:49May I have one from the top? And five little ones, please.
12:53You may indeed. Thank you, Annie. One large. Five little coming up.
12:57And for this round, the little ones are five, ten, nine, another ten, seven, and the big one, 50.
13:06And the target, 201.
13:10201.
13:41Yes, Annie?
13:43And I've got 202.
13:47201 away. And Cami?
13:48200.
13:50And 200.
13:52So, Annie.
13:559 minus 7 is 2.
13:589 minus 7, 2.
13:59Times 50 is 100.
14:01Yep.
14:0210 times 10 is 100.
14:05It is.
14:06And then 10 divided by...
14:08Oh, no, I'm sorry, I've come wrong.
14:10Oh, that would have been one the other way with 200 there.
14:14Cami, your chance.
14:16I did the same up to...
14:20Right, and you declared 2.
14:21So, 9 minus 7, 2 times 50, and add 100.
14:2610 times 10 is 100, and that's what I did.
14:29So, you've done the same.
14:30Yeah.
14:30But you've got 200, which you declared.
14:32Yeah.
14:33Bad luck.
14:34Bad luck indeed.
14:35201, that's what we need.
14:37Rachel, possible?
14:38Yes, one way you could have said 9 minus 5 is 4 times 50, 200.
14:45And then 10 over 10 is 1.
14:48Well done.
14:52So, Cami on 30, Annie on 38, and we now turn to Giles.
14:57And Giles, you've been touring your one-man show.
15:00How was it?
15:01Well, it was fun in its own way, a bit exhausting.
15:04And at the beginning, I was inviting people, because it became a 2-hour show, I thought
15:08maybe people should be allowed to ask questions, you know?
15:11And so Act 2 began with questions.
15:14And then, it was on the Isle of Wight that I was doing this, Ventnor.
15:17I did the show, questions.
15:20And a lady at the back of the hall had her hand up, and I said,
15:22Madam, what is the question you wish to ask?
15:24And she said, well, you've told us a lot of serious stories,
15:27which you clearly seem to think are amusing.
15:30But you haven't mentioned fish once.
15:33Fish?
15:34I'm sorry?
15:34She said, you haven't mentioned fish once.
15:37I came here to discover how to debone a trout, and I've learnt nothing.
15:42And it turned out she thought I was Rick Stein.
15:50Excellent stuff.
15:52All right, well done.
15:53Well done indeed.
15:54Giles, 30, plays 38.
15:56Annie on 38.
15:57And it's Cammie's letters game now.
16:00Cammie.
16:00Constance, please, Rachel.
16:02Thank you, Cammie.
16:03R.
16:04And another.
16:06D.
16:07And another.
16:10P.
16:12And another.
16:14T.
16:17Vowel, please.
16:18I.
16:19And another.
16:22O.
16:23And another.
16:25A.
16:26And another.
16:29E.
16:30And a consonant, please.
16:33And the last one, N.
16:35Stand by.
16:36I.
17:06Cammie?
17:08Try nine.
17:09Try nine. Great boy.
17:11Annie?
17:12Eight.
17:14And you're eight?
17:15Operants.
17:17Now, Cammie?
17:19Uh, deportion?
17:23Departion?
17:24Oh, somebody who is departing is making a departion.
17:27It's a departion from the book, the words in the dictionary, I can tell you that much.
17:30It won't be there.
17:32No, it isn't, I'm afraid, Cammie.
17:35Departure will be there.
17:36And Annie, I'm afraid Operant is seven rather than eight.
17:39I'm so sorry.
17:40Oh, bad luck.
17:42So sorry.
17:43Bad luck.
17:44Now then, Giles, rescuers.
17:46Well, I was quite excited.
17:48I think I may have got something that is possibly even a nine-letter word here.
17:54Predations.
17:55Oh, predation.
17:56Predation.
17:57Singular, absolutely.
17:58Predation.
17:59A predation, something that you are deprived of.
18:01Act of preying upon.
18:02Preying upon.
18:02Yeah.
18:03To prey upon somebody is to be a predator.
18:04And if you are preyed upon, you're suffering from a predation.
18:08Yeah.
18:08Yeah, it's an act of predation.
18:09An act of predation.
18:10Very, very good.
18:11Brilliant.
18:12Well done.
18:16Well done.
18:1738 plays.
18:18Cammie's 30.
18:19Annie's in the lead.
18:20Annie, it's your letters game now.
18:23May I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
18:25Thank you, Annie.
18:26V.
18:27And another, please.
18:29G.
18:31And a vowel, please.
18:33I.
18:34Another vowel, please.

18:55And the last one.
18:56S.
18:58Stand by.

19:31Seven.
19:33Yes, Gummy?
19:34Six.
19:35You're six?
19:36Vigs.
19:38Now, Annie.
19:40Visage.
19:41Ooh, yes.
19:43Ah, yes, you're pronouncing it the French way, Annie.
19:45With the S at the end, faces or countenances are the visage or visages, as we would probably say in
19:51English.
19:51No vagues, I'm afraid.
19:53You could have vagues, but not vagues.
19:55Visage.
19:56Beautifully said.
19:57What about abusive?
19:58Is there the word abusive?
20:00Abusive is a brilliant seven.
20:02Well done.
20:02All right.
20:0345 plays 30.
20:04Good performance, Annie.
20:05And it's Cammy's numbers game.
20:08One last, please, Rachel.
20:10Thank you, Cammy.
20:10One from the top row.
20:11And five more little ones.
20:14And this time the little ones are ten, one, another one, four and two, and the big one, 50.
20:22And this target, 396.
20:26Three and nine six.
20:27And this is the 59's.
20:56We've been a little 그룹.
20:57Yes, Cammie?
20:583-9-6.
20:593-9-6. Annie?
21:013-9-6.
21:03So, Cammie?
21:0410, take 1, take 1.
21:078.
21:088.
21:08Times 50.
21:09400.
21:10Take 4.
21:11Yep, very simple.
21:123-9-6.
21:14And Annie?
21:15The same way.
21:18That's fine, yeah.
21:20Well done.
21:23Well done indeed.
21:25Still that same difference.
21:26It's 40 plays.
21:27Annie is 55 as we go into our second teatime teaser, which is par nines.
21:32And the clue, nothing to do with golf, although they might carry your clubs.
21:37Nothing to do with golf, although they might carry your clubs.
21:49APPLAUSE
21:56Welcome back.
21:57I left you with the clue, nothing to do with golf, although they might carry your clubs.
22:02What might?
22:02Why?
22:03The panniers might.
22:04Panniers.
22:06So, 55 to Annie.
22:07Strong performance for Annie.
22:09Cammie on 40, and it's Annie's Letters game now.
22:13Um, I'd like to start your consonant, please, Rachel.
22:17Thank you, Annie.
22:18T.
22:19And a consonant, please.
22:22R.
22:23Another consonant, please.
22:26S.
22:27A vowel, please.
22:29O.
22:30And another vowel, please.
22:32E.
22:34And another vowel, please.
22:37U.
22:38And a consonant, please.
22:40D.

23:06Thank you, Antony.
23:07And a vowel.
23:07And a vowel.
23:08And a vowel.
23:09Let's end.
23:10And a vowel.
23:15And a vowel.
23:16Well, let's not.
23:17And a vowel.
23:20Let's listen.
23:21Zhu融.
23:24Annie.
23:26Eight.
23:27And Cammie?
23:29Eight.
23:30Annie?
23:32Readouts.
23:33Now then, Cammie.
23:34Dextrous.
23:36Dextrous.
23:38Dextrous.
23:39Very good.
23:39Well, we're hearing that hyphens are now on the way out.
23:43So I imagine that readout, when countdown began,
23:46wouldn't have been allowed, but now it probably will be.
23:49Readout.
23:50Sadly, that's one stubborn hyphen.
23:53It is still there.
23:54I think it's jolly unfair, Annie.
23:56Yeah.
23:56Interesting, isn't it?
23:58Now then, Annie, you've allowed Cammie to clamber a little bit nearer to you.
24:0248 now to your 55.
24:04And we look to you, Cammie, to see what you're going to do with this next letters game.
24:08Concept, please, Rachel.
24:09Thank you, Cammie.

24:24And another.
24:26I.
24:27And another.
24:29O.
24:31And one more.
24:33U.
24:35And a consonant, please.
24:37And the last one, F.
24:40Countdown.
24:41O.
24:42See you soon, Rybam.
24:44See you soon.
24:59Bye.
25:00Bye.

25:07Bye.
25:09Bye.
25:12Cammie? Eight. Annie? Eight. And Cammie's eight? Outlined. Now then, Annie? Outlined. There we go. Well done. Excellent. Well done.
25:29And Giles, Susie? Well, I just want to test the system again. We're talking about hyphens being less used nowadays
25:35than once they were. Would we allow outfield? He was playing outfield.
25:39Outfield is fine. Absolutely. All one word. There you are. Another eight-letter word. Outfield without a hyphen. Perfect. Susie?
25:47Yep. Excellent. Well done. Well done, Giles. 63 to 56. And Susie, your origins of words. And I'm really going
25:57to concentrate and make notes.
26:00Well, I had an email from John Littlemore who asked, when we cower in terror, has it got anything to
26:07do with cows?
26:08And it's sort of related to animals, but not in the way you might think, and not specifically to cows.
26:14That's an old English word that came over with the Germanic invaders a very long time ago.
26:19But coward is something slightly different, as is cower. Cowards turn tail and run, and that's very appropriate because the
26:27root of coward is the Latin corda, which meant a tail.
26:31So the idea is that a coward has their sort of tail between their legs, really, or hangs their tail
26:38low and then sort of, you know, runs off in terror.
26:42Now, cower makes absolute sense to link that with coward, but in fact, that's got yet another root to it.
26:50That goes back to a Viking word, an example of a sort of, the remains of another invader to the
26:56British shores, and their word cougar, which simply meant to oppress.
27:01And obviously, if you are oppressed, you sort of cower people, or you cower people, and people cower in response.
27:07So cowards and cower and cow all have different roots, but they've all sort of followed these strange journeys through
27:14different languages into English.
27:16Very good. It's amazing.
27:18Breath-taking.
27:22Wonderful shooting. Thank you.
27:25All right. 63 plays. 56.
27:27And Annie.
