00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:34Now, how often do you find yourselves saying sorry when you've done nothing wrong and when you know it's not
00:41your fault anyway?
00:42Now, an experiment recently was undertaken.
00:45I'm going to tell you all about this.
00:47Testers intentionally, it's extraordinary, really.
00:49They went round the country and they intentionally bumped into people and found that 80% of English victims, those
00:57into whom, you know, they had bumped, said sorry.
01:01Apparently, we say sorry eight times a day.
01:05It's an extraordinary thing.
01:06Now, I remember when I was a kid at school and I had a great friend, my best friend, his
01:10name was John Harding.
01:11He may even still be alive.
01:13He was being teased.
01:15Anyway, at the school assembly one morning, the headmaster, Mr. Mortby, said,
01:20It has come to my attention that John Harding has been teased relentlessly and I want the culprits to put
01:27their hands up.
01:28Well, I hadn't teased him.
01:30He was my best friend.
01:32But nobody else put their hand up.
01:34So I thought, well, I'll start the ball rolling.
01:36So I put my hand up.
01:37Extraordinary.
01:39And he said, Hugh, you've been teasing Harding, have you?
01:42I said, yes.
01:43And then nobody else put their hand up.
01:45And he then, the headmaster, produced from behind his back a cane.
01:50I thought that's the last time I'm going to own up and apologise for something that I haven't done.
01:55But anyway, there we are.
01:56But that was...
01:57That's one of your weirder stories, I have to say.
01:59Well done.
02:00There we go.
02:01Now, who have we got with us?
02:02We've got Anne Dibbenback, our two-time winner from Hazelmere.
02:05There's scores of over 100 each time you've been out, as it were.
02:09You enjoy playing squash and hill-walking.
02:11And you're a mum to little Alice, I think.
02:13How old is Alice?
02:14She's two now.
02:15Oh, I love you.
02:16She'll be watching you.
02:17Now, you're joined today, Anne, by John Biliteri, a semi-professional singer
02:22who goes by the name of Frankie Johns at the weekends in and around Bristol.
02:27Yes.
02:28No, more or less in Bristol, Steve.
02:31I can't afford the petrol to travel.
02:34All right.
02:34But you've raised a lot of money for charity over the years, yeah?
02:38Yeah, I have.
02:38Any particular charity?
02:39It's out for heroes.
02:40Well, good luck to you today.
02:42Okay.
02:42Thank you very much.
02:42Good luck to you, John Biliteri and Anne Dibben, of course.
02:46Anne Dibben.
02:46Big round of applause.
02:51And over there in the corner, of course, Susie and Alistair once again.
02:56Welcome back.
02:58More great stories from you later on.
02:59And now it's, I guess, time to get down to business.
03:03Anne.
03:05Afternoon, Rachel.
03:05Afternoon again, Anne.

04:17A seven.
04:18John?
04:19Only six.
04:20Your six?
04:21Sheared.
04:23Sheared.
04:24Anne?
04:25Residua.
04:27Residua.
04:28There's no sheared.
04:30There's shard or sheared as a nurse sheep which would need to ease I'm afraid.
04:34Sorry.
04:34No worries.
04:35Residua is an excellent plural form of residuum which is simply a chemical residue.
04:42There we go.
04:43Very good.
04:44And Alistair, what can you offer us?
04:46Lots of other nice tasty sevens that were shirked.
04:50That was a nice one.
04:51And that one I particularly like.
04:52Darkish.
04:53Darkish.
04:54Alright.
04:55Well done.
04:55Seven points to Anne and it's John's letters game.

06:34Can't go beyond that?
06:35No, wanted quite a few sixes, Nick, but we couldn't find the list.
06:38All right, let's go.
06:40Let's try a numbers game, then.
06:42Anne.
06:43Could I have two large and four small, please?
06:45Thank you, all usual now.
06:46Thank you, Anne.
06:46Two from the top and four little ones.

07:51Rachel, what are we going to do here?
07:53748.
07:54I think you might kick yourselves, because if you say 7 plus 3 is 10, times by 75 is 750.
08:03And then take away the two.
08:05There we go.
08:06Well done.
08:06Well done.

08:11Murmurs of appreciation from the audience there, Rachel.
08:14Well done.

08:17It's Maul Gent.
08:18And the clue?
08:19Not Fifty Shades of Grey.
08:21Just the one.
08:22Not Fifty Shades of Grey.

13:19all right
13:19so
13:19yes John 258 thank you and also 258 let's hear from John 25 times 10 is 250
13:35yes at the 7 at the 1 lovely 258 well done thank you
13:42you seem very pleased about that well done and and would you yes same way same way all right
13:49done it wrong
13:55well done 16 plays and 37 as we turn to Alistair Alistair ever observant you've begun to
14:04notice the disappearing hyphen I believe I have yes in a very little trust way I get very upset
14:10by bad punctuation but one thing that's happened lately is the hyphen is starting to disappear
14:14I've asked people why I may well ask Susie Dent why in a little while but people are saying it's
14:18because of emails and computer language that the hyphen doesn't always sit well in words apparently
14:22so it's being dropped it may just be that people don't know it's there sometimes it's annoying
14:26sometimes it's misleading sometimes it's downright amusing when you see a word without a hyphen or a
14:30phrase that should have a hyphen recently a pub chain I saw this in Stratford-on-Avon I saw it
14:35in
14:35Stratford Eastern London so it was all around the country I think we're offering burgers and
14:40it said outside come and see our mouth-watering burgers with no hyphen so as she said come and
14:46see our mouth watering burgers I was very tempted to go in and say can I see this mouth you
14:51have
14:52which apparently is dribbling onto these burgers which don't sound particularly appetizing to me
14:56another one I was there with friends recently I don't drive they were parking in a car park
15:00it said please do not park here the police thank you for your cooperation with no hyphen so it said
15:05the police thank you for your cooperation which presumably means something to do with making
15:09barrels yeah we hadn't made any barrels I did want to go and point this out to the police but
15:13I thought
15:13it was perhaps best not to and business events I'm sure you do a few of these you get sent
15:17the scripts
15:17and the the scripts again written by other people frequently don't have a hyphen recently I had to
15:21talk about a company and that one of their colleagues who was being recommended for being a hard working
15:26colleague no hyphen so she was actually being described as a hard working colleague so obviously
15:32wouldn't want to mess with her but you see the disappearing hyphen everywhere and I think there
15:35should be a site set up maybe there is I don't do stuff online but maybe there is a site
15:39for the
15:39disappearing hyphen but often very funny results very good well done what does Suzy think about this
15:44punctuation is just changing you know semi colons going much to my regret colons as well because
15:50we're using dashes and again that's that's a sign of ease of use with with emails etc so it is
15:57shifting but you know language is incredibly circular so they may well come back in indeed
16:01thanks Suzy and lovely stuff thanks Alistair
16:07so there we are and on 37 John on 16 and we turn to you and for letters game and

25:32Panties. Thank you for that. What can you help us with? Alice and Susie. I only had a couple
25:38of sixes. Pianos and a pines. But? There's a botanical eight. Enations. E-N-A-T-I-O-N-S.
25:46They're
25:47outgrowths from the surface of a leaf. They look like miniature leaves but they haven't
25:51got any vascular tissue in them. Those are Enations. Thank you very much Enations. Very
25:57good. And Susie, again, we're at your origins of words section. And today? Thank you. Well
26:09today I had an email from Gabrielle Page, lovely name, and she asked, why do we talk about one's
26:16very best effort as one's level best? What's the level got to do with anything? And we've
26:21been talking about things that are on the level, things straight or honest, since about
26:24the 1600s. Actually, if you trace it all the way back by a very convoluted route, it goes
26:30back to the Romans' Libra, meaning balance, from which we get the pound sign and of course
26:36we get the Libra sign of the zodiac with the scales. And level best is probably simply a nod
26:43to this idea of honesty and integrity because on the level is straight, as I say, and above
26:48board. But one theory gives it a much more specific origin and a nicely colourful one,
26:54I think. And that places level best in the gold fields of California in the 1800s, the
27:0119th century. And people planning for gold, the diggers, would shake the gravel and the
27:07mud that had been dug up in pans, which were shallow bowls, really. And this would be done
27:12until the mixture was level, and that way you could better spot the fragments of gold that
27:17might be lurking there. So that way the bowl would be at its level best in order to see
27:22the gold. But that panning is also crucial to another expression in English, and that's
27:27when it panned out. If something pans out, it's very, very successful. And that originally referred
27:32definitely, we do know this, to the finding of gold amidst all the mud that was being shaken
27:37around in these shallow bowls. Brilliant. Oh, well done.
27:45Very interesting. 75 to 23. Now then, John, what are we going to do? Let us go.
27:49Oh, ha. Yes. Okay, Richard, my wall to start, please. Thank you, John. I.
27:55Another. A. I'll have another one, please. E. Consonant. T. Another one. R. And another. H.
