00:00Mr. President, if you're going to sell the Bible, you should know the Bible.
00:04But, you know, in 2 Corinthians 4th chapter, 8th verse, of course, the Apostle Paul writes,
00:10we are troubled on every side, but not distressed, perplexed, but never in despair.
00:18And certainly it's the case with this extremism that has been unleashed on the American people,
00:24failures on the economy, tariff, out of control, war of choice, skyrocketing gas prices,
00:35Supreme Court assaulting the Voting Rights Act.
00:39Christina, I'm so thankful for her, her public service spirit,
00:44and for extending this invitation for me to join all of you for this very important roundtable discussion.
00:51It's always a blessing to be with the faith community, faith community leaders,
00:56remain central to the communities that I represent,
00:59and certainly to communities like Macomb County all across the United States of America.
01:05Pastor Lancaster, thank you for hosting us at this great house of worship.
01:11And, you know, I'm sorry for the delay.
01:15Today, someone asked me, I've been moving around the country,
01:19wait, the Congress didn't get anything like Air Force One, unfortunately?
01:24The answer is no, I fly commercial.
01:28And so we were a little bit delayed.
01:31I was coming from South Florida, but delighted to be here.
01:35These certainly are extraordinary and very challenging times that we're navigating
01:42here in the United States of America, certainly, you know, in the Midwest,
01:46and here in Michigan.
01:48We need a dramatic change in direction, that's clear to me.
01:52But we want to make sure that it's a people-centered change in direction,
01:57which is why discussions like this are so very important.
02:00I believe we're on the way to being able to be in a position
02:06to govern in a more enlightened way after the November 3rd election.
02:11And I stand strongly behind Christina.
02:13This is one of the closest races in the country
02:16and will help determine who is in charge in the Congress next year.
02:23No pressure on y'all here.
02:26But Christina, as I mentioned, is just a very talented public servant.
02:30She cares about the community, cares about making a difference,
02:33and I'm looking forward to partnering with you as we move forward.
02:37As I've been traveling around the country over the last 20 or so months,
02:42you know, I've taken to often cite a particular passage of Scripture,
02:482 Corinthians, the 4th chapter.
02:54Now, that's 2 Corinthians, not 2 Corinthians.
03:00You mean it already.
03:02Mr. President, if you're going to sell the Bible, you should know the Bible.
03:07But, you know, in 2 Corinthians, 4th chapter, 8th verse, of course,
03:12the Apostle Paul writes,
03:13We are troubled on every side, but not distressed.
03:19Perplexed, but never in despair.
03:21And certainly it's the case with this extremism
03:24that has been unleashed on the American people,
03:27people, failures on the economy,
03:29terrible, out-of-control,
03:32war of choice,
03:35skyrocketing gas prices,
03:38Supreme Court
03:39assaulting the Voting Rights Act,
03:42unleashing Jim Crow-like tactics
03:44on African-American communities
03:46throughout the South,
03:48and hopefully not beyond,
03:50but
03:51challenges
03:52all around us,
03:53but still not distressed.
03:56Because fundamentally,
03:57not only do we serve a good God,
04:00but he gives us the courage,
04:02the character,
04:02the conviction
04:03to make it through
04:05a storm like this
04:06and come out stronger
04:08on the other side.
04:09And that's been our experience,
04:11our journey,
04:12our history.
04:13And, of course,
04:14that has always been
04:15anchored
04:15in the faith community.
04:18But we know faith
04:19without work is dead.
04:20And so,
04:22we look forward to getting to work
04:23with all of you.
04:27A significant difference
04:28running straight
04:30at the affordability crisis.
04:32As you indicated,
04:33Pastor,
04:33life is way too expensive.
04:35Here in the United States of America,
04:37we believe,
04:38you know,
04:38we have to drive down
04:39the high price
04:40of everything.
04:42You know,
04:42high price of groceries,
04:43high price of gas,
04:45certainly high price of housing.
04:47And also fight
04:48for the principle
04:50in this country
04:51that,
04:53you know,
04:53access to high quality
04:55affordable health care
04:56can't simply be
04:57a privilege
04:58available only
04:59to the wealthy,
05:00the well-off,
05:01and the well-connected.
05:01We've got to come together
05:02to make sure
05:03it's a right
05:04available to every
05:06single American.
05:07And we're committed
05:08to working hard
05:09in that regard.
05:10And the last thing
05:11I mentioned
05:12before yielding back
05:14to everyone
05:15is
05:16we also know
05:17that
05:19democracy,
05:20our way of life,
05:22the rule of law,
05:23the ability
05:24to participate
05:25in free and fair elections.
05:30And
05:30one of the reasons
05:31why I'm looking forward
05:32to serving with Christina,
05:33I know she's strongly supportive
05:34of making sure
05:35that in the next Congress,
05:36as Democrats,
05:37we move aggressively
05:39to pass
05:40the John Robert Lewis
05:42Voting Rights Advancement Act.
05:44so we can end the error
05:46of voter suppression
05:47in the country
05:48once and for all
05:49and put democracy
05:50in the hands
05:51of the American people.
05:53So thank you
05:54for giving me
05:54an opportunity
05:55to stop by.
05:56I look forward
05:56to our discussion.
05:58And as we say
05:58in Washington,
05:59I yield back
06:00the balance of my time.
