The Netherlands is sending a strong message about Europe’s future security, as its Defence Minister warns that European nations can no longer depend entirely on the United States for protection. Against the backdrop of Russia’s war in Ukraine, the minister highlights the Netherlands’ growing defence investments, military cooperation with Kyiv, and concerns over Russian propaganda. The remarks raise critical questions about Donald Trump’s approach to NATO, America’s role in European security, and Europe’s push for greater military independence. Watch how the Netherlands is responding to shifting transatlantic relations and the changing security landscape.

00:00Regardless of whomever is living at the White House at that moment, we have to be able to
00:05stand up for ourselves, and I'm very glad that the Dutch public really does get that.
00:10But for me, to remain, to have their support, we have to, and I have to get a better narrative,
00:16and I will look to my colleagues in the other parts of Europe to get that.
00:19Member states and big companies of the European Union are participating in those projects.
00:25So that's, there are very tangible developments.
00:30The Netherlands, Dylan, is doing something, a lot of concrete work.
00:34Just give us an example of some of what the Netherlands are doing that other countries
00:38can potentially take away when it comes to strengthening security and not, I don't want to say, it's
00:44not, I'm not being facetious, but not just relying on NATO or having that kind of umbrella.
00:50Well, and thank you also for that question, because, you know, for many, many years in
00:56the Netherlands, we have been defunding the military and our armed forces.
01:02And when the large-scale invasion of Ukraine happened, I think, like the rest of the world,
01:08we all realized it was way too naive, just trying to rely on the notion of peace.
01:15It is just not there.
01:16So we've been starting investing in our own armed forces, but immediately also starting
01:21to support Ukraine.
01:21And we support Ukraine on different levels.
01:24We support with material when it comes to F-16s or tanks or drones, with training.
01:33And what we also do with so many different levels, with funds, we are really learning
01:39for our own armed forces from Ukraine.
01:41They are sharing their data with us.
01:43So what they are experiencing and the front field and the battlefield, they are exchanging
01:48their data with us.
01:49So our armed forces are really training, as you speak, every day with the knowledge the
01:53Ukrainians have.
01:55Because, as we know, and it was mentioned this morning earlier, that at one point we
02:00were all trying to help Ukraine, and now Ukraine is teaching us because of what they have been
02:04experiencing.
02:05But they have the most innovative army in Europe.
02:08So we are learning from them and what we are doing at the same time.
02:12Also, for me, very important to keep the support of the Dutch public for all these efforts,
02:17is investing in our own defense industry.
02:19Because it was also, of course, due to a lack of spending, not that strong anymore.
02:25And in Europe we have that issue.
02:27So we are investing in our own industry and we do it in a way that we work together with
02:32Ukraine.
02:33So we have our joint cooperation when it comes to producing drones, for example, which is
02:39helping out Ukraine, which is helping out our own industry, and we are learning it for
02:44our own armed forces.
02:45And I think that would be crucial for the upcoming time, because I see everywhere in
02:51Europe, and definitely in our part of Europe, well, maybe even a lack of support towards
02:59Ukraine by the people.
03:00And this is very important to keep that support.
03:03And to remain that support, it is also important to show Ukraine is fighting for our own safety
03:08and security.
03:09We know that.
03:10We know that Putin will not stop in Ukraine.
03:12But we are also investing in our own industry and we are building up our own army, our own
03:18armed forces with all the knowledge we get from Ukraine.
03:21So I think that these three points are very important.
03:24And we have a unique position in our part of Europe, that our parliament and the people
03:29are really supporting these efforts towards defence and towards Ukraine.
03:35And it all starts with knowing that this is not only helping out another country, this
03:41is also helping out yourself.
03:43Thank you so much for that.
03:44When it comes to Hungary, obviously, you've had a change in leadership relatively recently.
03:50So that's changed the dynamic.
03:51But that support of the population, is it there?
03:55You took in a lot of Ukrainian refugees as well.
03:58So that kind of also changes the dynamic.
04:00Absolutely.
04:01And first of all, thank you for inviting me here.
04:05Because the previous government is not allowed to join to the European conversation.
04:12So therefore, I really thank you for everybody who invited us here today.
04:17Yes, in April, in the middle of April, we changed the former government.
04:22And the main aim was to face him back to Europe, to face him back to West, in our point
04:29of view.
04:30And we have a pretty large support still until the election phase.
04:37But it doesn't mean that the mindset of the Hungarian society changed dramatically.
04:46So, as you are aware, I'm a former officer, a former chief of defense.
04:51So I see a little differently the defense of Europe, of course, in a more practical way
04:56than the theoretically and political way.
04:59I was in a front line in Ukraine when I was a chief of defense in 2022.
05:04I visited the whole front line together, the deputy chart of Ukraine.
05:08So I know exactly what's happening there.
05:13And it's horrible.
05:14We have to stop somehow.
05:16We have to stop what's happening there.
05:18The ceasefire is more than essential.
05:21It would be because every day people are dying there.
05:24So I'm sure the whole Europe can agree with that statement.
05:29We have to reach somehow to have a ceasefire there.
05:33What are the difficulties?
05:35Let me quote here Klausowicz and his triangle.
05:42A war will continue if the will will not change of the society, the government and the defense forces.
05:54What will happen with this?
05:54That's what I don't want to say.
05:55It is in the world.
05:57You have to break one of the edges of this triangle, on both sides.
06:05This is the basic principle of every war.
06:09You cannot change it.
06:11So, therefore, it's very difficult because if you see what's happening with Ukraine right now, both government want to continue.
06:19both societies support this one
06:21and the defense force is just
06:23moving back and forth 10 kilometers
06:25so I cannot
06:27I cannot see
06:29any reality this will
06:31change in a short period
06:33of time. So
06:35if we talk about
06:37the Europe defense is very important
06:39what's happening in Ukraine
06:41in the Ukraine and soil
06:42due to the Russian-Ukraine war
06:45but in parallel we do not forget
06:47the other part of Europe
06:48and for Hungary it's very important
06:51so therefore our gripping just came back
06:53from the Baltic states who were provided
06:54air policing to the
06:57three Baltic countries
06:58and parallel please do not forget
07:00the Western Balkan
07:01if you see the Western Balkan it's a neighbor
07:04for us as well not only Ukraine but the Western
07:06Balkan is very close to
07:08Hungary and
07:10Hungary is continuously sending troops
07:12there not only in the K4
07:14but even the EU mission
07:16and I can be very proud of the military because from the region
07:21Hungary is the only one
07:22who got the
07:25leadership there so Hungarian
07:26generals lead
07:28the K4 and the EU
07:30formation so this is
07:32what we have to do this is what we
07:34have to continue that somehow
07:36we have to find the common voice
07:38of the European
07:40countries not only the European Union but the European
07:43countries to have
07:45somehow a common interest
07:47because if you see the different
07:49countries
07:49as different
07:50interests
07:51and different countries in Europe
07:54see the threats and the danger
07:56differently
07:58absolutely different
07:59the point of view from north and south
08:00and west and east and even in middle
08:02but somehow we have to
08:05have to have a red line
08:07and we have to agree with different
08:09and I'm sure that that will be the basic
08:11how can we continue
08:12and figure out
08:13our common defence policy
08:15well that's an excellent point
08:16and thank you
08:17Torres
08:17so from the point of view of Norway
08:19obviously Norway partnering with
08:21the Warsaw Security Forum
08:22this for this edition
08:24you have a very different perspective
08:28Romelu already touched upon
08:30how different aspects of Europe
08:32how they're touched by
08:34this European war in different ways
08:36the further away you get from it
08:39there is a completely different perspective
08:40so how can Europe unite
08:43in order to
08:44sing the same hymn
08:46so to speak
08:48first and foremost
08:49by stepping up
08:50taking our responsibility
08:52not leave it for the Americans
08:53as we've done
08:54for the last 40 years
08:56and for Norway
08:58the perspective is from
09:00a polar projection
09:01and what we see
09:03in the north
09:04at the Kala Peninsula
09:06the biggest concentration
09:07of nuclear arms in the world
09:09not directed towards Norway
09:12but towards Los Angeles
09:14Chicago
09:14Toronto
09:15New York
09:17and of course
09:18towards London
09:19Paris
09:20Berlin
09:21because
09:23even though
09:24Putin is losing heavily
09:26in the front line
09:27down in Ukraine
09:28losing thousand soldiers
09:30each day still
09:31more than that
09:32in September
09:33and even though
09:36the Russian civilian economy
09:37is a disaster
09:38and in recession
09:39the war economy
09:41is unfortunately
09:41going pretty well
09:43even though
09:45he's struggling with that
09:47we can see that
09:48he still is heavily investing
09:50in the north
09:51in the northern fleet
09:52with new frigates
09:54with new submarines
09:55silent submarines
09:57which can leave
09:59leave the Barents Sea
10:00and hide
10:00on the depth
10:01in the Norwegian Sea
10:02the Barents Sea
10:03is shallow waters
10:04200 meters deep
10:05on average
10:05the Norwegian Sea
10:06is down to 2,000 meters
10:08so we have to keep
10:09track of those submarines
10:11before they go out there
10:12and these submarines
10:13are silenced
10:14so we say that
10:16we are tracking
10:16the sound of silence
10:17for collective security
10:19of Europe
10:19and North America
10:20and even though
10:22he's struggling
10:23in the economy
10:24and in Ukraine
10:25he's heavily investing
10:27in new capacities
10:28up there
10:29testing new weapon systems
10:31we are watching that
10:3224-7
10:33365 days a week
10:35days a year
10:37together with
10:38especially together
10:38with UK
10:39and our American friends
10:42but also
10:43more common
10:44with Germany
10:45and France
10:46going up there
10:47because this is a threat
10:49to the whole alliance
10:49and we can see
10:51the new weapon systems
10:52now in this testing season
10:54last year
10:56they tested this
10:56Skyfall
10:57or Burasnik missile
10:58which fled for 14 hours
11:01which can also carry
11:02a nuclear warhead
11:03and they're testing
11:04this Poseidon
11:05underwater drone
11:06or torpedo
11:07which can travel
11:08at speed up to 80 knots
11:09carrying a nuclear warhead
11:12and it's designed
11:13to explode outside
11:14a popular city
11:16to create a radioactive tsunami
11:18we are following
11:19these tests
11:19and we are tracking
11:21this for the whole alliance
11:23reporting back
11:24to NATO
11:25and our close allies
11:27so this is the polar
11:29projection
11:30and we need to keep
11:32this flank safe
11:32that is our task
11:34we are the ears
11:36and the eyes
11:36of NATO
11:37up there
11:38and we can also see
11:39as the polar ice
11:41is melting
11:42the series
11:43are opening
11:45and China
11:45has proclaimed
11:46themselves
11:47as a near-arctic nation
11:48being more often
11:50up there
11:50building new icebreakers
11:53nuclear-driven icebreakers
11:54the northern
11:55northeast sea route
11:57is 5,000 km shorter
12:00from Shanghai
12:01to Rotterdam
12:02than going through Suez
12:04and Suez
12:04is a vulnerable place
12:06at the moment
12:07it will be
12:07for some years
12:08so we can see
12:09the strategic competition
12:11is also racing
12:12in the Arctic
12:13therefore also
12:14we have this Arctic century
12:15together with NATO
12:17and we know
12:19that Putin
12:20has a kind of ambiguity
12:21about China
12:22coming up there
12:23because he wants
12:24to be a hegemon
12:25up there
12:25so the strategic
12:27importance
12:28of the Kala Peninsula
12:28is getting even more
12:30important
12:30for Russia
12:32they're locked in
12:33in the Black Sea
12:33because of Bosporus
12:35controlled by NATO
12:36and Turkey
12:36they have problems
12:38in the Baltic Sea
12:40surrounded
12:41after Sweden
12:42and Finland joined
12:44by NATO
12:45so
12:46what's happening
12:47in the north
12:48is getting more
12:49important
12:49for the whole alliance
12:50so to deter
12:51Russia up there
12:52to step up
12:53in Europe
12:54to take the burden
12:56shifts
12:56seriously
12:57is
12:58I think
12:59Norway
13:00will lead
13:00in that way
13:01in the north
13:02and we think
13:03that's the main
13:04responsibility for us
13:05and just
13:06just to conclude
13:08about
13:08the Americans
13:09the Americans
13:10will stay in NATO
13:11because this is
13:12homeland defense
13:13for USA
13:15but we need
13:16to take our
13:16responsibility
13:17and we
13:17together in NATO
13:18and the Ankara Summit
13:19we took
13:21responsibility
13:21for the burden
13:22shift
13:24for hunting submarines
13:25together with
13:26close allies
13:27many of those
13:28sitting here as well
13:31and we used to say
13:32if you're afraid
13:33that US
13:34is going to
13:34leave NATO
13:35or if you want
13:36them to stay
13:38the answer is the same
13:39we need to spend
13:40more in Europe
13:41and Canada
13:42that's the best way
13:43to keep them close
13:44and if
13:46they should leave
13:46we don't think so
13:48then
13:48we have to spend
13:49a lot more
13:50so the answer
13:51is the same
13:51Europe has to step up
13:53we have to take
13:53our responsibility
13:54we are going
13:55to do that
13:56in Norway
13:56and we will also
13:57follow up
13:58for Ukraine
13:59so thank you
14:00thank you
14:01Andreas
14:01we've had a
14:02really good
14:03overview now
14:04of what
14:05individual countries
14:06are doing
14:06the broader picture
14:08the differences
14:09between the
14:10different regions
14:12within Europe
14:12are these nations
14:14getting it right
14:16well
14:18definitely no
14:19on European continent
14:21in European Union
14:22defense
14:23is very much
14:24prerogative
14:25of member states
14:26so
14:28member states
14:29are coordinating
14:30their defense plans
14:31with NATO
14:32NATO is
14:35negotiating
14:36with member states
14:36and finding agreement
14:37on so called
14:38capability targets
14:39we as European Union
14:41we are coming
14:41with our
14:42economical
14:42instruments
14:43to help
14:44member states
14:44to deliver
14:45what is needed
14:46for our defense
14:47so that's
14:48where
14:48we did
14:49safe loans
14:50now we have
14:51Ukrainian support loan
14:52we are looking
14:53for next MFF
14:54now that
14:55it will be
14:55much
14:56here will be
14:57much more money
14:58for common
14:59projects
14:59we are developing
15:00common projects
15:01pan-European projects
15:02so a lot of things
15:03are really
15:05developing
15:06on European continent
15:08from that point of view
15:09and I agree
15:10absolutely
15:11with
15:12our Norwegian
15:14colleague
15:14that really
15:15we need to
15:16understand
15:17very much
15:18that
15:20our
15:21need to build
15:22our defense
15:23capabilities
15:23is our own
15:26responsibility
15:27not because
15:29Americans
15:30do not love us
15:31anymore
15:32as somebody
15:33maybe thinks
15:34but simply
15:35because
15:35geopolitical development
15:37global geopolitical
15:38development
15:38and military
15:40development
15:41is going
15:42in such a way
15:42that China
15:43is rising
15:44and definitely
15:45Americans
15:45will shift
15:46because of
15:48very clear
15:48defense logic
15:50much more
15:51of their resources
15:51towards that region
15:52and this is
15:53we should
15:54maybe
15:56how to say
15:57we should not
15:58allow ourselves
15:58to complain
15:59too much
16:00about that
16:00development
16:01but really
16:02much more
16:04seriously
16:05and much more
16:05urgently
16:06should look
16:07into our
16:07responsibility
16:08to take
16:09this primary
16:10responsibility
16:11on conventional
16:12European defense
16:13as it is now
16:14set in this
16:15NATO 3.0
16:17concept
16:18that will demand
16:19a lot from us
16:20and not only
16:21to develop
16:21our material
16:22capabilities
16:23or strategic
16:24enablers
16:25where we are
16:25dependent
16:25on American
16:27services
16:28but also
16:29to find
16:30the ways
16:31institutional ways
16:32how to become
16:33much more united
16:34on the European
16:34continent
16:35in order to have
16:36much stronger
16:37European pillar
16:38of NATO
16:38which is
16:39the same
16:40what NATO 3.0
16:41is talking
16:41and that is why
16:43commission president
16:43in her state
16:44of the union
16:45for example
16:46she said
16:47in a very clear way
16:47we need to understand
16:48that our institutions
16:50on the European continent
16:51our doctrines
16:53and our decision making
16:54which were created
16:55during peacetime
16:56are perhaps
16:57not fit anymore
16:58to those
16:59developments
17:00which we are facing now
17:01that is why
17:02she proposed
17:02to look into
17:03possibility
17:04to have
17:04what is called
17:05European Security Council
17:07with Norway
17:08with member states
17:09and including Ukraine
17:11including United Kingdom
17:12and even Canada
17:14which is close
17:14to Europe
17:15I think that those
17:18developments
17:18those transformations
17:19are very important
17:21for us
17:21we need to understand
17:23that this is
17:23really organic
17:25task for us
17:26and we need to build
17:27what is needed
17:28and I want
17:29definitely want to
17:30just bring
17:30the rest of the panel
17:32in
17:32but just one more
17:32to you Andres
17:33you're talking
17:34about institutions
17:35across Europe
17:37but you know
17:38that European nations
17:40are becoming
17:41increasingly polarised
17:42I mean
17:42Hungary is just
17:44coming out
17:44of that phase
17:45of it
17:46and you also know
17:47that United States
17:48and their security
17:49statement
17:50they are
17:51supporting
17:52those kinds
17:53of populist
17:54leaders
17:55who encourage
17:56polarisation
17:57so this idea
17:57of institutions
17:59being
18:01helping
18:02spread
18:02this idea
18:04of Europe
18:053.0
18:06whatever
18:06you know
18:06NATO 3.0
18:07however you want
18:08to say it
18:09on the ground
18:10it doesn't
18:11translate
18:12because people
18:12aren't voting
18:13that way
18:15well
18:15people are
18:17if you will look
18:18into opinion
18:19polls
18:19in general
18:20you will see
18:21very clearly
18:22that European
18:22voters
18:23European citizens
18:25they are naming
18:26very clearly
18:27that one of the
18:28biggest concerns
18:29for them
18:29is security
18:30and defence
18:32this is
18:33what we need
18:34to understand
18:34and second
18:36they are looking
18:37very much
18:37for Europe
18:38to becoming
18:39stronger in defence
18:40even on
18:41European defence
18:42as they call
18:43so this is
18:43again
18:44very clear
18:45second
18:46definitely
18:47we need
18:47to understand
18:48that
18:48Russians
18:49Russia
18:50Moscow
18:50Kremlin
18:51are using
18:52all the
18:52hybrid instruments
18:53to weaken
18:54us politically
18:55so
18:56we need
18:57to defend
18:58ourselves
18:58that's for
18:59sure
18:59and
19:00you know
19:01I will
19:01not
19:03discuss
19:04too much
19:05of
19:05United States
19:06domestic
19:07politics
19:07middle
19:08midterm
19:09elections
19:09and so
19:10on
19:10that is
19:10you know
19:11that is
19:12politics
19:13really
19:15we need
19:16to
19:16really
19:17much more
19:18to look
19:19into
19:19our own
19:20needs
19:22and our
19:22capabilities
19:23and
19:24I see
19:26from
19:27you know
19:27American
19:28defence
19:29experts
19:30and
19:30military
19:31experts
19:31very clear
19:32message
19:33that they
19:33want
19:34Europe
19:34to become
19:35stronger
19:35in defence
19:36in my
19:37understanding
19:38in order
19:39to become
19:40stronger
19:40in defence
19:40we need
19:41to become
19:41more united
19:42not less
19:43united
19:44in Europe
19:44so
19:45one of the
19:46problems
19:47which we are
19:47facing
19:47when we are
19:48talking
19:48about
19:49material
19:50you know
19:50things related
19:51with defence
19:52about our
19:52defence
19:53industry
19:53is exactly
19:55what was
19:55described
19:55by
19:56Mario Draghi
19:57our
19:58defence
19:58industry
19:58is very
19:59much
19:59fragmented
20:00you know
20:01we do not
20:01have
20:02integrated
20:02defence
20:03market
20:03that makes
20:04our
20:06so strong
20:06as we
20:06would like
20:07to see
20:07and in
20:08order to
20:08overcome
20:09this
20:09fragmentation
20:10we need
20:11to look
20:11how we
20:11can become
20:12politically
20:13more united
20:13on defence
20:14that is
20:14where
20:15Security Council
20:16comes in
20:17with
20:17possibilities
20:18among us
20:19among
20:19you know
20:20member states
20:21especially
20:21leading
20:22member states
20:22to have
20:23much more
20:24clear
20:24vision
20:25and
20:25practical
20:27decisions
20:27how we
20:28can overcome
20:29our weaknesses
20:29including
20:30fragmentation
20:31thank you
20:32very much
20:33Dylan
20:34more defence
20:35arguably
20:36is more
20:37spending
20:37and you've
20:38got this
20:39dual aspect
20:39you're
20:40the deputy
20:41prime minister
20:41of the
20:42Netherlands
20:42also the
20:43minister
20:43of defence
20:43so you
20:44can see
20:45where
20:46the
20:46friction
20:47and the
20:48tension
20:48lies
20:49because people
20:50are worried
20:50about the
20:51cost of
20:51bread
20:51milk
20:52butter
20:52whatever
20:52it is
20:53but
20:54to
20:54Andreas'
20:55point
20:55more defence
20:56is more
20:57spending
20:57how do
20:58you
20:59take the
21:00people
21:00with you
21:00well
21:01this
21:02is
21:02the
21:02debate
21:03right
21:03now
21:03in
21:04the
21:04Netherlands
21:04on the
21:05one
21:06hand
21:06we
21:06have
21:06the
21:06reforms
21:07for
21:08social
21:09affairs
21:09and
21:09the
21:10health
21:10care
21:11but
21:11we
21:11know
21:12at
21:12the
21:12same
21:12time
21:12this
21:13is
21:13completely
21:14disconnected
21:15from
21:15defence
21:16because
21:16if we
21:17don't
21:17reform
21:18then
21:18later
21:18on
21:19our
21:19children
21:19and
21:20grandchildren
21:20will
21:20not
21:21have
21:21the
21:21best
21:23social
21:23health
21:24care
21:25for
21:25example
21:25or
21:26the
21:26social
21:26care
21:27we
21:27can
21:27provide
21:28them
21:28so
21:28that
21:29is
21:29the
21:29reforms
21:29and we
21:30have
21:30the
21:30spending
21:31for
21:31defence
21:31and
21:32there
21:32are
21:32obviously
21:33people
21:33and
21:33parties
21:34who
21:34are
21:34connecting
21:34those
21:34really
21:35together
21:35so
21:36it's
21:36very
21:36important
21:36for us
21:37to make
21:37sure
21:37that
21:38they are
21:39viewed
21:39separately
21:40for
21:41for me
21:41for me
21:41minister
21:41of
21:41defence
21:42it
21:42comes
21:42also
21:43with
21:43a
21:43huge
21:43responsibility
21:44to
21:44show
21:45the
21:45people
21:45how
21:46we
21:46are
21:46spending
21:47the
21:47money
21:47and
21:47there's
21:48also
21:48a paradox
21:48in that
21:49right now
21:49going on
21:50that
21:51the
21:52clearer
21:52the
21:53aggressor
21:54gets
21:54the
21:54clearer
21:54the
21:55enemy
21:55gets
21:56the
21:56less
21:57transparent
21:57we
21:57can
21:58get
21:58about
21:58our
21:58spending
21:59because
21:59you
21:59don't
22:00want
22:00to
22:00give
22:00all
22:01the
22:01information
22:01to
22:02your
22:02opponent
22:03so
22:03that's
22:04a paradox
22:04in our
22:04democracies
22:05and
22:06it's
22:06very
22:06important
22:06that
22:06we
22:07keep
22:07explaining
22:07why
22:08and
22:08I
22:09think
22:09that's
22:09also
22:10a
22:10part
22:10of
22:10what
22:11we
22:11must

22:13in
22:13the
22:13western
22:14part
22:14of
22:14Europe
22:14and
22:15probably
22:15also
22:15the

22:16is
22:17that
