00:00Hackers turned grocery store freezers into ovens.
00:03They flipped the fridges into defrost mode,
00:05heated them to 122 degrees Fahrenheit,
00:08and ruined the food inside.
00:09And the same equipment runs the fridges at Kroger,
00:12Albertsons, and Whole Foods.
00:14This happened at multiple grocery store chains
00:16in France on Sunday night.
00:18Intermarche says 150 to 200 of its stores
00:21continuously defrosted for six hours, some catching fire,
00:24and the CEO puts the national loss
00:26at tens of millions of euros.
00:28Workers spent Tuesday dumping ruined food into the trash.
00:32The fridges run off control panels connected to the open internet
00:35so repair crews can adjust temperatures remotely.
00:38Those panels come from a handful of companies.
00:41Dan Frost, which makes many of them,
00:43says the affected systems were running outdated firmware.
00:46Now, this is a French story,
00:48but one of these companies whose panels got hacked is American.
00:51Copeland is one of three systems France says got hacked,
00:54and about two-thirds of North American grocery stores
00:57use its products.
00:58No U.S. store was hit, and nobody's confirmed
01:01whether U.S. stores even run on the same exposed setup.
01:04France's cyber agency says these panels
01:06should never have been on the internet,
01:08and now it's telling stores to disconnect them.
01:10So, who's responsible here?
01:12The hackers, the manufacturers, or the stores?
