00:00This morning, a major break in one of the most enduring mysteries of January 6th.
00:07After nearly five years of false leads and conspiracy theories, the FBI has arrested a
00:12Virginia man they say planted both pipe bombs outside the Republican and Democratic National
00:18Committee headquarters on the night before the Capitol attack. And later today, he'll be in
00:23federal court. Agents took 30-year-old Brian Cole Jr. into custody Thursday at his home in
00:29Woodbridge, Virginia. A swarm of federal and local agents moved in, searching the house,
00:34the backyard, and a car in the driveway, executing warrants in a case that has haunted investigators
00:40for years. Let me be clear, there was no new tip, there was no new witness, just good, diligent
00:48police work and prosecutorial work, working as a team, along with ATF, Capitol Police,
00:56Metropolitan Police Department, and of course, the FBI.
01:00The arrest came as the FBI released new details, including previously unseen video from January
01:075th, right here, showing an individual placing a bomb near a bench outside the DNC. Court papers
01:13say Cole bought galvanized pipes, kitchen timers, and electrical wire, and his cell phone pinged towers
01:19near both party headquarters the night the devices were planted.
01:23When you attack American citizens, when you attack our institutions of legislation,
01:29when you attack our nation's capital, you attack the very being of our way of life.
01:35And this FBI and this Department of Justice stand here to tell you that we will always refute it
01:40and combat it. We will provide the safest country the nation has ever seen under President Trump's
01:45leadership here.
01:46The bombs never detonated, but the FBI says they were viable and lethal. Their discovery
01:52diverted police resources just minutes before the Capitol mob breached security. For years,
01:58the lack of an arrest fueled claims of a cover-up, even from some Trump appointees who now oversee
02:03the bureau. Cole is charged with transporting explosive material and attempted destruction by explosives.
02:09He will make his first court appearance later today as agents continue searching for his motive
02:14and whether anyone else helped him.
