01:05How does a fisherman's daughter turn her family sacrifice into a national achievement?
01:12Good afternoon and welcome to Beyond the Headlines.
01:14I'm DJ Moises and today's conversation is brought to us by Coffee First.
01:19Jana Tabuada is the daughter of a fisherman from Badian, Sabu, who has risen to become the sixth placer in
01:27the fisheries professional licensure exam, earning an impressive rating of 88.25%.
01:35Let's look deeper and think better.
01:38Today we talk about the dreams, grief, sacrifice, and the kind of success that gives meaning to everything a family
01:46has endured.
01:47Hi Jana, welcome to Beyond the Headlines.
01:51Hi Paul. And to all the viewers of Beyond the Headlines, good noon.
01:55So, good noon. Kumusta man ang air quality diya sabad yan? I'm just kidding.
02:00Okay, I'm sorry.
02:02Sige. So, ang first, and by the way, congratulations. It's a huge achievement for you and also to your school.
02:11Yes, well, thank you to all the greetings to my relatives and friends and to all the people who support
02:20me.
02:21So, Jana, can you take us to the moment when you first learned that you placed sixth in the fisheries
02:31licensure exam?
02:35At that time po, I was in my room together with my family, waiting for the results.
02:40And then, I was just scrolling. Then, like, the pop-up lang yun sa messenger nga.
02:45Daganay na ni-congratulate. And it was my co-scholar that informed me that I was top six.
02:50And I was like, sure, don't like, you know, adnance.
02:53And it's like, we were just jumping around and excited and purely blessed to laga yan.
02:58And I was like, thank you, Lord. We're worth it and the sacrifices.
03:04So, yeah, you've mentioned about sacrifices.
03:07So, on a personal note, what does this achievement mean to you and also to your school?
03:14Because you're the first in your department sa CTU Mual-Mual.
03:20It was, it meant everything po because last year, I just manifested it nga.
03:26I want to be the first top nutcher because taking the board sa amang department is very crucial talaga
03:32because we're thinking about the rating.
03:34And it was, like, also, like, to give back to the college itself.
03:40And I was just thankful and blessed na ayun manifest, the prayer came through.
03:48Nga ako lang yung manifest o gigaslight nga ako galigon nga.
03:52Makaya na ko siya.
03:53And by the way, that na-intrigued ko na ang mindset, no?
03:56Because several days ago, there was also a top nutcher, no?
03:59Si Jude that we interviewed.
04:01He placed first in civil engineering.
04:03Before he even took the exam, he already manifested that he's going to place first.
04:07And he did place first.
04:09In your case, you also manifested that you would be the first in your department.
04:14What made you set that goal?
04:17I think it was during that, like, when I realized that I was not going to be a Latin.
04:24It's like, I want to prove something nga.
04:26I want to avenge myself nga.
04:28Those four years nga akong pagpaningkabot nga.
04:31Or, like, if di mangani ko mga latid, gusto ko nga matap sa board.
04:36Ito nga time is, like, but hindi, ay, makaya na ako.
04:40Kaya na kaya ang good sa ako.
04:41And when I found out nga taga si Theo Carmen is a top one sila,
04:47like, it gave me a dream nga, maybe I can do it too.
04:52And I'm thankful nga at nga gi-hear ni Lord ako, I'm afraid.
04:56When you say Latin, Latin mass or Latin honors?
05:00Latin honor, like...
05:01Oh, okay.
05:02Just kidding.
05:05Wasn't it...
05:06I like to make a quiz.
05:07Sige, panayin panayin.
05:08Ok, so I wanted to make a gradon.
05:10Mupa, sige siya sa Latin honor.
05:12Or, ako po siyang gi-aim niya.
05:14But due to the drop subjects I had,
05:17just to pursue my scholarship,
05:19gilford na po kodahan, pero...
05:22Mula ginakanang mga kwan, saka masayangan,
05:25saka sa imuhang kwan.
05:27Pero at the end, it's just title man.
05:30The real-life situation na ang kungun, saka mo excel.
05:37Yeah, actually, if you don't mind,
05:40mga tana ko about that part.
05:42So, in principle, if we base it in your GPA,
05:45you could have achieved a Latin honor nga distinction,
05:50but it's just because of the technicalities.
05:53Because ni drop man ka,
05:55and then you stop for a year,
05:56that was the reason why you were not able to get the honors.
06:01Yes, sir, Darwin.
06:02It was because of that book.
06:04But it was for the better,
06:06because it was also for my future,
06:09because I had a chance with BFAR
06:14to pursue their financial aid as a scholar.
06:18So, it's like,
06:21for the future, it will be for the time.
06:24Yeah, so this is an example of,
06:26when a door closes,
06:30a bigger window actually opens.
06:32And I could tell that you're a very focused young lady,
06:37but were there also moments,
06:39and this is for the benefit of the viewers na ito karoon
06:43who are making their own hashtag na sana me.
06:47So, for them,
06:49was there a time also that you experienced
06:52ka nang self-doubt,
06:54and how did you overcome those?
06:57Yes, po.
06:58It was during the, like, halfway sa review,
07:01and I was, like, thinking,
07:03is this worth the, like,
07:05paningkamot antoon?
07:07Because, like,
07:08owning the responsibility
07:10to become a top-notchers,
07:11like,
07:12or,
07:13para sa kong kagulingan,
07:14but at the, like,
07:15as an exam,
07:17was getting closer,
07:17it was more, like,
07:19I want to give back
07:20to the people
07:22who believed in me,
07:23and
07:24to inspire po sa akong mga juniors
07:27sa
07:27sa T-FAS
07:28nga,
07:30pag makayas,
07:31pag makayan ako,
07:32makaya po nila.
07:34And if you look back
07:36to your journey,
07:38ka nang,
07:39di ba, ka nang,
07:39you also had your self-doubt,
07:41most likely because
07:42it's not also a very,
07:43ka nang,
07:45smooth,
07:45ka nang,
07:46road, no,
07:47that you went through.
07:48Ka nang,
07:48what were the sacrifices,
07:49as man said,
07:50that you personally
07:51had to make, no,
07:53so that you would be able
07:54to achieve
07:56this very important
07:58and impressive milestone?
08:01One thing that I had,
08:02was,
08:03I had sacrificed
08:04twice my love
08:05for dancing
08:06because
08:06pag-high school na ako is,
08:08like,
08:09mostly,
08:10mag-dance na dyan ako
08:11ang ganahan nga buhaton
08:12and,
08:14but when,
08:14like,
08:15like,
08:15college na,
08:16I think,
08:17it's time to get serious,
08:18so,
08:19doon ako nag-start
08:20nga mag-study
08:22yun o gmayo,
08:23kaya pag-high school,
08:24diyan man kaya ko
08:24mag-hilig o gstudy.
08:26Pag-college,
08:27every night,
08:28or,
08:29every time nga nga kami quiz,
08:30ako gina siyang sa gulo,
08:31o na kung saka pipiki,
08:33para,
08:35ma,
08:36i-aim din ako nga,
08:37ma-perfect na kong examen,
08:38nga na kong mindset na o na.
08:40Now,
08:41actually,
08:41when you said,
08:42love,
08:42but I thought,
08:43love life,
08:44love for dancing,
08:45diyan,
08:45un sa nga type of
08:47kanang dances man
08:48that you,
08:50kanang you explored
08:51when you were in high school,
08:53diyan?
08:55It was more on
08:56pop dance po.
08:58We had a,
08:59we had a group,
09:02tamo ang national
09:03high sabad yan,
09:04and it was called
09:05intablado,
09:05so,
09:06like,
09:07that's nga ganyan,
09:07mo po tali reason nga,
09:10gamayin to grado
09:10pag senior high.
09:13So,
09:14I mean,
09:14that's impressive,
09:15because pop dancing
09:16truly requires
09:18a,
09:18kanang specific
09:20skills,
09:21no?
09:21So,
09:22sige,
09:22pero now,
09:22let's move towards
09:23katong,
09:24the one that you mentioned
09:25earlier that you had
09:27to stop for one year.
09:29Tell us more about
09:30the circumstance
09:31around that.
09:33It was,
09:35like,
09:35when I found out
09:38nga,
09:38like,
09:39nakapasar ko,
09:39and we had an
09:40orientation with before,
09:42we had sa,
09:43we discussed some
09:44guidelines there,
09:45and,
09:46and it was found out
09:47nga,
09:49na,
09:51I didn't qualify
09:51the guidelines,
09:52because,
09:53if BFAR kay,
09:54nang dapat walang kay
09:55earned units,
09:56so,
09:56what they suggested
09:57was,
09:58to drop the subject
09:59para hindi siya
10:00makounted,
10:01and,
10:02so,
10:03motol,
10:06perte na kung
10:06panghanginan sa kong
10:07mga instructor nga,
10:09di lang sa kong
10:09tagaano grado,
10:10kay hapit po siya
10:11mo en ang sem,
10:12so,
10:13pandemic pagid to
10:14ato nga time,
10:15so,
10:15like,
10:16contact lang yun siya,
10:17and I was just
10:18grateful nga,
10:19nga,
10:19i-kuan po sa kong
10:20mga instructor na,
10:22ako ang request
10:23nga i-drop
10:24kong subject.
10:25Now,
10:26I understand
10:27the circumstance,
10:28kay,
10:29the scholarship,
10:30correct me if I'm wrong,
10:31from what I read,
10:32kanang,
10:33para to siya sa kanang
10:34mga senior high,
10:35no,
10:35nga,
10:35ikaw nakasugod naman ka,
10:37so,
10:37that's why you had
10:38to drop the subjects.
10:40Yes po,
10:41and there were
10:42lots of delays,
10:43that's why.
10:45And then,
10:46kung samay ka nang
10:46giput on hold ni mo,
10:48because I'm sure,
10:49nakasugod na biya ka
10:50when you were
10:51in college,
10:53you also made
10:54lots of friends,
10:56nakatuun pong ka,
10:57no,
10:57because you're,
10:58you're also kanang
10:59making sure that you
11:00had good grades,
11:02so,
11:02what were the things
11:03that you also thought
11:04you put on hold,
11:05no,
11:05just for you
11:07to be able to,
11:08kanang leverage
11:09on this scholarship?
11:13Maybe like,
11:15di,
11:16and the fact nga,
11:18di na kayo mo,
11:20di na kumay school na,
11:21which is,
11:21di siya like,
11:22normal sa ako ah,
11:23nga,
11:24mo stop,
11:25kay,
11:25ako per maya sa student,
11:26present yun ko kay Marag,
11:28mahal,
11:28loo ka mo upset ba?
11:29So,
11:29like,
11:30the thought of dropping,
11:31Marag,
11:33paan kay siya nga,
11:34carry kay siya,
11:35pero,
11:36at the end,
11:37like,
11:37ako na lang diyang
11:37diyang embrace
11:38ang changes
11:39and reassure myself
11:40that nga,
11:43time will come,
11:43nga,
11:44ako na po.
11:45So,
11:46what did you do man,
11:47at itong a one year
11:47that you had to
11:48drop off from,
11:50or drop off from school,
11:52or drop out from school?
11:55Um,
11:56I did,
11:57like,
11:58work sa ako ang,
11:59tiyak na barbecue business,
12:02every night,
12:03so,
12:03morat ako ang,
12:05ikabalahan,
12:05while,
12:06wala pa ko guys ko ila,
12:08and,
12:08like,
12:09morat ako,
12:09diresen ako,
12:09kung kaugalingon,
12:11niya,
12:12time with the family.
12:14And then,
12:15um,
12:15I've also read that
12:16your mother,
12:18no,
12:18kanang,
12:19as her form of
12:20encouraging you,
12:21she actually said na,
12:23para ni siya,
12:24para na sa ibang future.
12:25How did you also,
12:26kanang,
12:27receive
12:27those,
12:28kanang,
12:29motivating words,
12:30gihikan sa ibang mama?
12:33Um,
12:34those encouragement po,
12:36is,
12:37like,
12:37morat,
12:37it's like,
12:38an answer to my doubts,
12:40nga,
12:41nga,
12:42supportive sila,
12:43abisan,
12:44like,
12:44mo-drop ko,
12:46and,
12:47doon ko nakarealize,
12:48nga,
12:50nga,
12:51it's worth,
12:52it's worth it,
12:53it's like,
12:53it's worth the wait.
12:55I was really,
12:56I was really doubting,
12:58if,
12:58makaya ba na ko,
13:00kanang,
13:01worth it ba,
13:02nga,
13:03i-drop na ko,
13:03ang,
13:04kanang akong,
13:04di,
13:06studihan,
13:07para,
13:07like,
13:08makuha lang,
13:09scholarship,
13:09but,
13:10I think,
13:11like,
13:12redirection lang po,
13:12to ni Lord.
13:14And so,
13:15pagbalik ni mo sa college,
13:17no,
13:17okay,
13:18ni,
13:19wala,
13:19wala mo kaniskwela for,
13:20about a year,
13:21what were the changes,
13:22man said,
13:23nga,
13:23nanotis ni mo,
13:25the way you studied,
13:26the way you approach,
13:28your,
13:30learnings.
13:32I think,
13:33like,
13:33the,
13:34years that,
13:36nga nagpundur ako,
13:37it gave me,
13:37like,
13:38the drive to,
13:38study harder,
13:41kay,
13:41we have a,
13:43like,
13:43a standard grade,
13:45so,
13:45if,
13:46like,
13:47I won't let myself,
13:49like,
13:49nga,
13:51ma-koan,
13:52mag-ma-reach,
13:53ang katong nga grade,
13:54so,
13:55like,
13:55if,
13:55amu ang,
13:56standard is 2.5,
13:58and,
13:59ang,
13:59ako ang,
13:59goal is,
14:00di lang mo,
14:00bus,
14:01sa 2.0,
14:02so,
14:03I made sure that,
14:04to,
14:05study,
14:06and study,
14:07like,
14:07and memorize all the concepts,
14:10and,
14:12and to also,
14:13like,
14:14magbida-bida sa classroom,
14:15para,
14:15mailan si maistara.
14:17Now,
14:18I'm,
14:19I'm moving towards,
14:20the important people in your life,
14:22no,
14:22so,
14:22I'm referring to,
14:23I'mong Papa,
14:24I'mong Mama,
14:25or ang I'moang Sister,
14:26but let's start sa I'moang Kanang Papa.
14:29So,
14:30tell us more about him,
14:31and what do you fondly remember most about your Papa?
14:36One of my fondest memories with my Papa is,
14:39like,
14:39when he would tell stories,
14:41I have a fishing trip,
14:42and,
14:43sometimes,
14:44like,
14:44as a kid,
14:45it would,
14:46it would,
14:46like,
14:47more like,
14:48mystical kay siya,
14:49the way he tells stories,
14:51is,
14:52makakuha daw siya,
14:53gigantic na octopus,
14:55and,
14:55for me,
14:55murag,
14:56pagka siya,
14:57like,
14:58magical kay siya,
14:58murag,
14:59asa,
14:59wakitag gigantic na octopus,
15:01diris ako,
15:02ano,
15:02niya,
15:03but kareun,
15:03I realized that it was,
15:04his way of,
15:06like,
15:06sharing,
15:07his,
15:08um,
15:09way of,
15:11like,
15:12amusing us,
15:14and also,
15:14he was the life of the party,
15:16talaga,
15:16so,
15:18that's one of the,
15:20like,
15:20makamiss,
15:21ang niyang present,
15:23so,
15:24because,
15:24for the benefit of our viewers,
15:27ang papa ni,
15:28Jana actually passed away,
15:29in 2022,
15:31so,
15:31the moment you learned,
15:33that you,
15:34you top,
15:35you know,
15:35you were among the top notchers,
15:37in the fisheries,
15:38licensure exam,
15:39how did that also mean,
15:41to you,
15:42na,
15:42i mong papa,
15:43no,
15:44was with you,
15:44at the start of that journey,
15:47yes,
15:49actually,
15:50during the,
15:51like,
15:52katong,
15:53nag,
15:54exam na ko,
15:56nag,
15:56nag,
15:57jim,
15:57jim,
15:57jim,
15:57jim,
15:57jim,
15:58jim,
15:58jim,
15:59jim,
15:59jim,
15:59jim,
15:59jim,
15:59jim,
15:59jim,
15:59jim,
16:00papa was guiding me,
16:02and,
16:02also,
16:03it was during his birthday,
16:05that,
16:05I was finally able to secure my PUR,
16:08I was like,
16:09parag,
16:10parag,
16:10imu,
16:10jim,
16:11guide,
16:11aninga journey,
16:12and,
16:13I'm just,
16:13like,
16:14so,
16:14blessed talaga.
16:16And,
16:16un samay ka nang-i-imagining mo,
16:18that could have been his words,
16:20no,
16:21kung naapa siya karoon,
16:22to celebrate this important and impressive milestone with you and the family.
16:28So,
16:28he would be so proud,
16:30like,
16:30manabit na day niya siya niya,
16:32magtagay niya siya heavy,
16:34like,
16:34mo ginahihahang way of celebrating.
16:38And,
16:38and your dad also,
16:40uh,
16:41was,
16:42well,
16:42your dad was a fisherman,
16:44no?
16:44So,
16:44un samay link sa sa imong dad's,
16:47ka nang,
16:48profession,
16:49to,
16:49the course,
16:50no,
16:50that you eventually took,
16:52and,
16:53and,
16:53and even topped,
16:54the licensure exam.
16:58Um,
16:59so,
16:59my father was a fisherman,
17:01and,
17:02also,
17:03it was also the reason that I was included sa Fisherfolk Children's Educational Grant sa BFAR,
17:08nga ni,
17:08mo po yung reason na mo,
17:10yung nitukok ko o Bachelor of Science in Fisheries,
17:13and,
17:15it like,
17:15magclosed na siya sa kong heart,
17:17ka nang,
17:19like,
17:19seeing the hardships of a fisherman,
17:22maka,
17:24think,
17:24maka realize na ka,
17:26how important our profession is in helping,
17:29improving their lives.
17:31So,
17:31more gina ang,
17:32gipang,
17:34gipiach samang mga,
17:35mga mentors and instructors,
17:37to,
17:37to make a,
17:39change,
17:40for the betterment of the fisheries sector.
17:43Mm-hmm.
17:44So,
17:44kanang,
17:45now I can better understand,
17:46no,
17:47ng,
17:47why imong papa is one of the,
17:49kanang,
17:50important people around you.
17:51Now,
17:51let's talk about,
17:52muna pong mama,
17:53no,
17:53from what I gathered,
17:55your mama was earning,
17:571,800,
17:58no,
17:58a month,
17:59as a barangay nutrition scholar.
18:02And correct me if I'm wrong,
18:04tulukabuok ang iyang gipa skwela,
18:06no?
18:07So,
18:07how did you also,
18:09kanang,
18:09look at your mother,
18:10ba,
18:10from a daughter's perspective,
18:12considering that she had to raise,
18:15and at the same time,
18:16put to school,
18:18tulukabuok mga managsuon,
18:19or iyang mga anak?
18:24Every time nga magtanaw ka,
18:25kong mga mga,
18:27like,
18:28sa plus kais,
18:29kai iyahang love,
18:30para na mga,
18:32kaya ninyang,
18:33like,
18:34manguntang langgid siya,
18:35para na ami,
18:36ipa,
18:37ika-ex kuyla,
18:38tas,
18:40and,
18:41she would let us,
18:42like,
18:42study,
18:43like,
18:43study lang,
18:44and,
18:46muna mag-ealty ko sa hayin,
18:47nga,
18:47di kai kukah,
18:48help niya sa,
18:49sa amuang balay,
18:51kai,
18:52she would give us room,
18:54nga,
18:54maka,
18:55study good ni,
18:56and,
18:57I think that's one of my,
18:59like,
18:59flexing,
19:00nga,
19:01I was able to,
19:02tap,
19:03di kuan,
19:04kos,
19:05my mama give me the time,
19:08and,
19:09and for that,
19:10I'm always grateful,
19:11that's why I always strive hard,
19:13para pod nila.
19:15And then,
19:16I also learned,
19:17nga,
19:18ang imuang,
19:18oldest sister,
19:20she's a teacher,
19:21no?
19:22And,
19:22one of the reasons,
19:23why you initially,
19:25thought about,
19:26kanang studying,
19:27education,
19:28Kaya,
19:29encourage mo,
19:30kasay mo,
19:30ang sister.
19:31So,
19:31what did,
19:32she also,
19:33kanang sacrifice,
19:34no,
19:35para matabangan ka,
19:36huwag ang mga,
19:37igsuon,
19:38sa inyong pag-skwela?
19:41I think,
19:41she sacrificed,
19:43for you.
19:44Because,
19:45after,
19:46graduating,
19:46and passing the exam,
19:47all she did was,
19:49like,
19:49to make income,
19:51and,
19:51like,
19:52to do her work,
19:53just to provide,
19:55namo,
19:55and,
19:56sometimes,
19:58maka,
19:58yun na lang,
19:59ba,
19:59nga,
19:59kanas naman,
20:00mag-minyo,
20:01yung,
20:01antidae,
20:02and,
20:02nga,
20:03nga,
20:03morag,
20:04later,
20:04nag-yun,
20:05siya,
20:05mag-kuan,
20:06kaya,
20:06ang ayan,
20:07focus,
20:07is,
20:08kami,
20:08yun,
20:09and,
20:09I'm,
20:10very thankful,
20:10di,
20:11ko,
20:11mo,
20:11ng,
20:12nang,
20:12nang,
20:12nang,
20:12nang,
20:15nang,
20:16nang,
20:16mag-mayo,
20:17and I can hear you say that phrase,
20:20no,
20:20kanang,
20:21kanang,
20:22even in our early conversations,
20:24so,
20:24first,
20:25now,
20:25na,
20:25kanabitawong,
20:26after your mother's sacrifices,
20:29and then,

21:46kaning,
21:46imuang chosen profession,
21:48which was fisheries,
21:49no,
21:49so,
21:50na-mention ako earlier,
21:50nga,
21:51I learned nga,
21:51you wanted to take up education,

21:54kanang,
21:55you finished,
21:56almost with Latin honor,

22:13I plan,
22:14I plan to work talaga,
22:16like,
22:18within the field po,
22:20like,
22:21be one of the fisher,
22:22fisher folks,
22:24and,
22:24also,
22:25like,
22:26conserving the,
22:28our aquatic resources,
22:30because that's more,
22:32I lean on to,
22:33because,
22:33I realized that,
22:35when during our college,
22:38when,
22:38like,
22:39the sea turtle,
22:42to rescue,
22:43the college,
22:44and,
22:44it was like,
22:45during that time,
22:48how important,
22:49the profession is,
22:50like,
22:51how much more,
22:52how can we contribute,
22:54to the,
22:56issues?
22:57Do you also plan,
22:58na mag-teach,
22:59or mag-pareha,
23:00pong,
23:00ka sa katong,
23:01inyo ang coach,
23:02or reviewer,
23:03na,
23:04na,
23:05na,
23:05na,
23:05na,
23:05na,
23:05na,
23:05na,
23:06na,
23:06na,
23:06na,
23:06to,
23:07to,
23:07to,
23:07to achieve your dreams?
23:10Um,
23:11na,
23:11not just a plan,
23:12but,
23:13I think,
23:13now,
23:14I'm still not fit,
23:16to become,
23:16a,
23:17like,
23:17teacher,
23:18because,
23:18I would,
23:18like,
23:19need to,
23:20require more experience,
23:21because,
23:21lahit am good,
23:22siya,
23:22ang theory,
23:23sa,
23:23experience,
23:24like,
23:25hand-ons,
23:26na,
23:26yod,
23:26and,
23:27that's why,
23:27I'm focusing,
23:28on,
23:29like,
23:29gaining,
23:30experience,
23:30muna,
23:31before,
23:31like,
23:32you know,
23:32teaching,
23:32but,
23:34if the,
23:35like,
23:36if the,
23:37like,
23:38Morag,
23:38invite me,
23:39Morag,
23:40I just accept it,
23:41pero,
23:42teaching,

23:45talaga,
23:45to,
23:46more,
23:47or,
23:47one,
23:47paana.
23:48So,
23:49I'm actually hopeful,
23:50that as you gain more experience,
23:52no,
23:52by then,
23:53yeah,
23:53I would agree with you,
23:54it,
23:54it would make you,
23:56even,
23:56more qualified,

23:59young,
24:00janas,
24:01also,
24:01to achieve their,
24:02their dreams.
24:03Now,
24:03let's talk about,
24:04kanang fisheries,
24:05no,
24:05because,
24:06some people,
24:07they,
24:07wala kay sila,

24:10what the profession is,
24:11no,

24:14kung,
24:14unsagid ang,
24:15kanang gistadihan ninyo,
24:17in school,
24:18and then,
24:19eventually,
24:20unsa-on siya,
24:21pag put into practice,

24:23na yung ganahan po,
24:24mo take aning,
