00:51What does it really take to become number one in a national engineering licensure exam?
00:57Is it brilliance?
00:59Is it discipline?
01:01Is it sacrifice?
01:03Or is it the school?
01:04Good afternoon and welcome to Beyond the Headlines.
01:07I'm DJ Moises.
01:08Today's conversation is brought to us by Coffee First.
01:12Jude Bernard Villarba-Menoza graduated summa cum laude at the Cebu Institute of Technology University
01:20and is the number one national placer in the September 2026 civil engineer's licensure examination,
01:28scoring an impressive 93.95%, the highest among 17,062 examinees.
01:38So today we'll get to know the young engineer behind the achievements.
01:43Let's look deeper and think better.
01:46So Jude, welcome to Beyond the Headlines.
01:49Good afternoon, sir.
01:51I noticed actually you were reading the prompt
01:54or maybe you also want to host the show one day.
01:59Sige, sige, sige.
02:01So by the way, I'm also an engineer, but I did not place in the board exam.
02:05So yours is incredibly impressive.
02:08And by the way, for the benefit of our viewers, Jude is the 97th first placer in CITU.
02:16So that's why earlier in the intro, I asked if part of the reason why somebody places first in the
02:22national exam
02:23is it also is cool a factor, but I'll ask you later about that.
02:27So was engineering always part of your dream?
02:31Okay, so when I enrolled, there were many options, Jude.
02:35And civil engineering is one of them.
02:37I have passion for math and physics and science.
02:41So I chose this course for math, Jude.
02:46So I chose this course.
02:47Part of my choices were civil, electrical, and ECE.
02:53Based on my research, there were many math-heavy courses, Jude.
02:56So in my research, I would like to say that it was the most challenging board exam.
03:00Wow.
03:00So I feel like if it was challenging, I would learn more and more knowledge to gain food.
03:05Aside from theory and numbers and engineering,
03:10I would learn more about the practical side of the work.
03:14So what was the question?
03:17Okay, sige.
03:18So I can affirm what you said because I am an electronics and communications engineer,
03:27but I will have to say that one of the toughest subjects I've met is strength of materials.
03:33Strength of materials.
03:34Which is a civil engineering subject.
03:37So I would agree with you when you said that you wanted the challenge.
03:42Sige.
03:42Okay.
03:43So when did you realize that you could excel academically?
03:49Honestly, I didn't expect that I was able to do it.
03:53Since I entered the college,
03:56so my plan was to graduate and graduate.
03:59And then I just barely studied on my subjects.
04:02And luckily, most subjects are math and CE.
04:05So I was able to answer problems and solving.
04:11And then,
04:12I was able to do the opportunities.
04:14I was able to do the peace balls, competitions.
04:17And then,
04:18I was able to do the field,
04:19and I was able to do it.
04:20But I was able to gain confidence
04:22because I was able to do it with my guru.
04:26So,
04:28since the first year,
04:30I was able to do basic math subjects.
04:32I was able to excel.
04:32And then,
04:34I was able to do the foundation subjects
04:35that I used in the second year.
04:38I would carry a lot of knowledge
04:39to the higher years.
04:42And I was able to do it there.
04:45That I was able to do it.
04:46I had my friends and support me.
04:48So,
04:48I felt that I could be able to do it.
04:53I could be able to do it.
04:56I could be able to do it.
04:58I could be able to do it.
04:58And unexpectedly,
05:00I could be able to do it.
05:01So,
05:04I practically knew your answer.
05:07I can anticipate your answer
05:08considering the numerical equivalent.
05:10If you finish Summa Cum Laude.
05:12But the moment you finish the first Semba,
05:16when you were in first year,
05:18your standing was already Summa Cum Laude?
05:22Or you had to catch up along the way to get you there?
05:26When I was in first year,
05:27I didn't do it.
05:28Really?
05:29No, no.
05:30And the reason why I raised that is because
05:32it's a remarkable journey.
05:33Continue.
05:34Okay.
05:34So,
05:35first year,
05:36it was a minor subjects
05:38like English,
05:39NSTP,
05:40TE.
05:41So,
05:42I could not have scores
05:44on this course.
05:45I could barely pass.
05:47But,
05:48in the math subjects,
05:49I couldn't have a chance to go.
05:50I could still have this.
05:51So,
05:51I asked the courses
05:53in my prospects
05:54for the second year, third year,
05:56and fourth year.
05:57It's a much heavy course.
05:58So, this was my first time in the second year.
06:01My first-time Dean's List was at CIT.
06:04I got to go to events like Parangal and Recognition.
06:09Then, I realized that yes, I can.
06:12Then, in the third year, my scores were higher.
06:17Until the fourth year, I got to go to MacBoards.
06:21I got to go to the first place.
06:24It was an exam containing all subjects.
06:27So, actually, while you were telling me your story,
06:34I'm also realizing, listening to you as the unfolding story,
06:39that I think, true-blooded math person, Yideka,
06:44the more you got deeper into the mathematics of it all,
06:51the more your academic standing improved.
06:54Yes, sir.
06:55And I hope our viewers have captured that.
06:58The others who are back and back,
06:59the minors are using it in the list.
07:03Right?
07:04Yours is actually better because as you are going through the majors,
07:12that's also when you also excelled.
07:16Yes, sir.
07:16So, it would tell us that you truly are fit to the course that you chose.
07:23What shaped your, because you said earlier that you thrive in challenges, no?
07:29Yes, sir.
07:30That's why you love mathematics and science.
07:32What shaped your attitude towards excellence?
07:35Or who, for that matter, shaped your attitude towards excellence?
07:39Okay, sir.
07:41When I was in second year, sir, I was, there was this opportunity, sir,
07:45to be part of a quiz bowl team in mathematics and from the mathematics department.
07:52So, it was my first time or second time in joining a quiz competition in college.
08:01So, I took the challenge and then it was a solo competition.
08:07So, the first quiz bowl that I had in college was a statistics one.
08:12So, it was very math heavy.
08:14True.
08:14It happened in Banco Central in Filipinas.
08:17So, there I witnessed, there were many, many audience and for the first time,
08:22there were, it was very different from a written exam because you have to solve this problem
08:28within a few seconds and then you raise your tag board.
08:31So, you had to think very quickly and solve this problem very fast.
08:37So, luckily, I have foundational concepts from high school food since I was from Cebu City
08:43National Science High School.
08:44So, good recommendations in statistics and mathematics.
08:48And in college, I had my coaches to train me in statistics, which helped me a lot to prepare
08:55in time pressure and the knowledge for this quiz bowl.
09:00So, luckily, I was able to be in second place for the original elimination.
09:05On your first attempt?
09:06Yes, sir.
09:07And then there was, for the, it was original elimination.
09:10So, there was another next round set of quiz bowl and I had, I've never been sued.
09:19So, I'm the first place who was in the National.
09:22But still, I was still proud of it.
09:25So, by first attempt, I was able to gain second place and it was my first time with you.
09:30too. And that's another example of showing up. It's one thing for us to be
09:37equipped or intelligent to hurdle a challenge, but the more important step
09:45is to show up, regardless of the outcome. A side from that, sir, is you don't have
09:50to rely more on motivation. I have also my own set of training and practice for
09:56it. So it's more on discipline. You have to plan out what. There was a set of
10:01outline from before the quiz will always start. So you have to plan ahead and
10:06study. And when solving, you have to take a lot of patience when there's a
10:12concept that you don't understand. I have many times in my life that I was
10:19frustrated because I couldn't understand this. But somehow, when you repeat
10:26things like you have to research, you have to click in on your own concept.
10:32So maybe you can also share to our viewers your study hacks or your study
10:40habits. Are you the type who is a sprinter? And that's me. I would prefer to cram.
10:46And obviously, I did not finish first. Or are you the marathoner type? Meaning,
10:52regardless of whether there's an exam or not, you would study every day?
10:56Okay, sir. I was a marathoner type of person, sir. Because when I cram, sir, I usually tend
11:04to forget more easily, sir.
11:05Which is actually true.
11:07Yes, sir.
11:07The retention is lower. Continue.
11:10So every time when my professor said, we will have this quiz on Monday, I will
11:16immediately study when I go home. So I would not just cram all problems in one
11:24go. So I would say a breakdown, like, first topic, the next day, and then two
11:30days before is complete set of questions. And the next day, I'll make my own
11:35questions, like, different given of words. So I would solve this on my own. And if
11:40there's a problem that I would, I couldn't understand, I would reach out to my
11:44professor and use the internet.
11:47And I hope our viewers also have captured that, especially the kids who are
11:52watching or young people who are watching who wish to also excel. Okay, I like the
11:56point when you said that you even go outside the usual route by even creating your
12:04own problems, just to make sure that you understand and doing your own research.
12:09Now, I don't know with you, but maybe you can tell me if things have always been
12:13easy. But just in case, there were moments in which things are not easy. No, you find
12:20them difficult. I think you've mentioned that there are concepts sometimes that you
12:23don't completely understand. What keeps you going when you encounter challenges?
12:28Yes. Okay, sir. When things becomes more difficult for me to understand, sir, my first instinct
12:36is I need somebody, somebody to help me, to guide me, kung isa kung next step buhaton.
12:42Or maybe they can recommend me some additional resource or maybe that they can share some of
12:48their secret techniques or kagalator techniques. I have a personal mentor from CIT, that is
12:55Sir Chua. He helps me, guide me to how to beat this board exam because he was a recent top
13:02notcher. So using that resource and knowledge from him, I used it in school and luckily in
13:09board exam food.
13:10So you mentioned that your mentor was also a top notcher. Yes, sir. Have you heard about the
13:17superstition in which magpatahal? Did you go through that route also? Magpatahal
13:21sa top notcher before taking the exam? I've heard many beliefs about that, sir. But during my
13:29preparation before the exam, ako ra nagpatahal. And then there was this another superstitious
13:35belief, sir.
13:35So you went through the process na nagpatahal, sir, ka?
13:39Ako ra, sir, nagpatahal sa myself.
13:41So yung mong gi-anticipate that you're the top notcher, so nagpatahal ka naan.
13:45I'm one of the top notcher, sir, nga.
13:46Okay, sige.
13:47If I'm top notcher, kai marag siyang ipatahal, so if ako magpatahal ka sa self, basin
13:52mata ako.
13:54So napatay lain belief, sir, nga, basin if magmaroon brief do ka, kai magmakapasar do ka,
14:00pero wala na ko natunggatok, kai magweirder siya nga, nga, nga.
14:03Okay.
14:05Sige.
14:06So I've also learned that, and obviously I think the viewers are also seeing a pattern
14:12because math is pattern, nga.
14:13You're disciplined, you're also intentional.
14:18And correct me if I'm wrong, but you truly aimed, nga, for the number one spot when you
14:26take the exam, how, how did you arrive at that particular mindset?
14:32Kaya, oban, may uaw man sila to declare what they wish to achieve, diba?
14:37Because I've heard some people, they would say nga, ah, I'll commit kanilang sa, but I'll
14:43deliver higher.
14:44But in your case, you were intentional from what I gathered to really placed very well.
14:50In fact, number one in the licensure exam.
14:54How did you arrive at that mindset?
14:56Okay, sir.
14:56So before, sir, I met, I met these top-notchers.
15:00I don't have that belief na I can be number one, but I have, since second year I enrolled
15:06in Review Center, I have witnessed many people.
15:08Second year reviewing already?
15:10Yes, sir.
15:10Very good.
15:11Okay.
15:11I have witnessed that these people na usually mga top one, top two, top three sa mga free
15:16boards, matopted sila.
15:18And sa ila rung mga kakugi, sir.
15:19Even though average student na sila, mga deliberate pag-college, and then I drafted sila.
15:26Then pag in-neural degree center kaya may araw nanggawas ilang mag nakafocus sila gamay ba kay.
15:32Since in school we have many subjects, minors and tesis, but after graduation, mainly your
15:39focus is only board exam na manjood.
15:40So you have more time to prepare and more time to adjust yourself.
15:44And then I witnessed that many people who not necessarily are like mga sumay, higana ba,
15:53higher achievers in school kaya, top-notchers sila.
15:56So if makayo nila, I think makayo po din ako.
16:00So maauto akong mindset.
16:03Was there, were there moments, okay, the things they say, no, that hold us back is when
16:11we also lose belief, no, in ourselves.
16:14Did you also have your own share of moments in which you doubted yourself?
16:21Yes, sir.
16:23Knowing that first place, sir, inya, 18,000 to takers, may parts of myself, sir, nag-doubt.
16:31Nagingan ko nga, alo, higana ka dagahan na, I'm sure that there are other people who
16:35are more smarter than me and more talented, then maybe being top-notcher and number one
16:41is like, if fantasy food.
16:44But I set aside that maybe ba.
16:47Seeing if, if magkugi lang kong maayo kay, knowing that kanyang mga top-notchers, they're
16:55average students and they are just, they're just people po din na, nag-tuon po, nangang
17:01gamot po tila.
17:02So if akong 8x2 ang ilang effort, maybe nga, mas malabuan po lang ako maayo.
17:07Mano akong, gyanan ako pagkumbati akong doubt, sir, pangatayim.
17:11So if I look at your university academic journey, there's already a pattern of academic
17:19success, no?
17:20Yes, sir.
17:21Some people, they also, they're motivated by their academic achievements or their success.
17:29The others also get distracted because of the pressure or the expectation that comes
17:36with academic success.
17:38How about you?
17:40How do you deal with your academic success?
17:43Is it a motivator or is it something that pressures you?
17:47Okay, sir.
17:49So for the ACAD, sir, I have this particular advantage kay, this baller ko and nag-review
17:55po ko.
17:56So magamit this knowledge that I gain kay, ma-apply po na ako sa akong mga subjects po.
18:00And then, so time management lang, kanyang upang subjects like minors and thesis kay, I would
18:08reach out to my friends po, ma-assist po kyan nila na isang mga tabang or isang mga tabang
18:13na ako.
18:13So mag-balance po akong mga major subjects.
18:17And I actually admire your candor ha, kay, I also have met at least people within my circle
18:25na mag-pretend silang effortless.
18:28But I like that you were honest about being intentional and the discipline required to
18:38get you there.
18:39It's not like I woke up like this.
18:41Yes, sir, and also having the right set of people in your life would, could greatly impact
18:46your, on yourself.
18:49Very good.
18:49No, and by the way, makalimutan ako, and that's an excellent point because di ba ni Anna sila
18:54nga, we are the equivalent of the five people we surround ourselves with.
19:01So can you briefly tell us also about the kind of friends, no, I'm reminded to ask you about
19:06that, the kind of friends that you surrounded yourself or you are surrounding yourself.
19:12I have surrounded myself with many friends, sir.
19:15And most of them are very humble and friendly, even though they are, some of them are rich,
19:20some of them are like, came from a humble family, and they are very helpful to each other.
19:27One time nga, kuha na sunugan mi, they even contributed some clothes and money to me.
19:33And then, I took on a realize nga, I was so lucky to have them, but even though, para magtanong
19:39ko sa kong salsur nga, marag, di maguroin ako deserve kandinga set of friends.
19:42So, maybe, if makabawin ang tako nila ba.
19:47And I treat them very, kuha na jod, fairly, and respectfully.
19:51You can also add more to that by saying hello to them.
19:55Hello.
19:56So, shout out sa kong mga friends po, from Sunny Angels group.
20:00Wow.
20:01Maybe, sige, ako tak ipa-enumerate ni mo ang Sunny Angels group.
20:04But, I would rather ask you, why Sunny Angels?
20:08It was not my decision, sir.
20:10It was their decision, and I don't know the reason for it to...
20:12Ah, okay.
20:14Sige.
20:15So, now let's play a little bit of a game, no?
20:17To further break the ice.
20:19So, I'll give you two options.
20:21Okay, sir.
20:21But, in reality, life will never give us the chance to choose both.
20:28So, in this particular context, you really have to pick which one, no?
20:32You will not say, it depends, or you will not say both.
20:37Okay, sir.
20:37So, pili yun.
20:38So, first, intelligence or discipline?
20:41Discipline, sir.
20:43Why?
20:46Because, being disciplined would carry you far, sir, rather than natural intelligence, guy.
20:53If you have discipline, I believe anything, you can do anything, sir, with discipline than intelligence.
20:57You can be an athlete, you can be a coach, a top nutcher, or you can be someone that you
21:03didn't expect you to become like this.
21:06Just because you are, you didn't rely on motivation, you rely more on consistency and hard work on your own.
21:13And listening to your answers, you're an example to this.
21:18How about this, too, no?
21:20Stability or adventure?
21:23Adventure, sir.
21:24Tell us more about your adventures when you are not studying.
21:31Although most of my life in college were on study, but I considered it adventure.
21:39You learn a lot from things and you apply it in the open world, and then, for me, sir, like,
21:47studying is like a hobby for me.
21:49I found it very interesting, but especially when it comes to science and physics.
21:53Like, my imagination will expand, and I feel like I have rewarded myself every time I understand each concept.
22:02Especially when I was able to study it, I was able to study it.
22:07That answer actually is like an aha moment for me, because most of the time when people talk about adventure,
22:12it's like traveling, which is also a legit adventure.
22:15Or doing extreme sports, which are legit adventures.
22:20But in your case, because you truly love what you are doing.
22:22So, even if you're reading the book and trying to figure things out, that is legit adventure also.
22:29Yes, sir.
22:29Sige, kani?
22:31I can already anticipate your answer to this.
22:35Lots of money, but less free time?
22:38Or lots of free time, but less money?
22:43Sige.
22:45I think that's an easy question, sir.
22:48Sige, okay.
22:48Less money and more freedom, because that's actually my case right now.
22:52So, my parents are not really, like, very rich, but they have very humble jobs.
22:58My mother was a housekeeper, and my father was just, has an office job.
23:02So, but still, I was very happy to have them, sir.
23:06I'm very proud.
23:07They are very supportive of my journey, sir, whatever.
23:10I took, if I was able to take my CE, maybe I was a waiter or I was a business
23:16guy.
23:17They were supportive of them, as long as I love what I do.
23:20And that's what they wish for me, put.
23:22So, more freedom and less money.
23:27I prefer to have, like, to enjoy the things that I love.
23:32Because you don't have to be rich, sir, nga.
23:34Para maka-enjoy, put ka, sa kaning mga butang.
23:36Which, in my situation would.
23:39So, my next kaning options, you can answer that in the context of the boss that you want to work
23:47with,
23:48or the teacher that you prefer.
23:51So, a boss or a teacher who is brilliant but terrifying,
23:56or a boss or a teacher who is clueless but incredibly nice.
24:04Say it again.
24:07That's a very hard question, sir.
24:10What's again?
24:11A teacher nalang that's brilliant but terrifying,
24:16or boss that's, or teacher na clueless but incredibly nice.
24:22I prefer a teacher that is smart but terrifying na nang, sir.
24:29Sige.
24:30Tell me more about it.
24:32Okay.
24:32So, when you have someone, mangud, na knowing a lot of things,
24:38so, maybe, ay, maka-enjoy ka nga.
24:41Laham, I can gain a lot from him, duro.
24:44And I can, and from my, since his, despite his terrifying nature,
24:49I would take it a risk, guy.
24:52Maybe nga.
24:53He can guide me towards a incredible fat food.
24:56And then,
25:14So, aside from Mr. Chua,
25:21maybe you'd also like to greet, no?
25:23Or have a shout-out with your favorite teachers who are watching.
25:28Sige, shout-out ko sa akong mga instructors sa CE department.
25:31Sir Selena, Sir Chua, Sir Lim, and
25:35there are mainly po si Sir Vistalswood.
25:39Hello, hello.
25:40And, and, and, and by the way,
25:43I was really anticipating that particular answer.
25:48Kay, ang akong explanation po, Dana,
25:51that's why, because you're a math person,
25:53and math is about pattern.
25:55Yes, sir.
25:55When a person man good, or a teacher happens to be brilliant,
25:59more often than not, they are logical.
26:02Yes, sir.
26:02So, even if they're terrifying,
26:04you can predict the hot buttons,
26:07you can also predict the green buttons.
26:11So, easier, no?
26:13To manage.
26:14Sige.
26:14Can I lose your laptop for a week,
26:17or lose your phone for a week?
26:25Like, I don't see any difference, but.
26:27Sige, pili.
26:28Which, if you are to choose,
26:29you will not have your laptop for a week,
26:31or you will not have your phone for a week?
26:34I think I would rather lose my phone for a week,
26:37because I noticed that,
26:39when I am,
26:40nag-lock-in ko,
26:41I tend to be more distracted on my phone,
26:44than on my laptop,
26:45because there are many notifications,
26:48and I will get my study routine,
26:50but I will interrupt.
26:52Compared to the laptop,
26:54like, I don't have any features.
26:55So, I can, like,
26:57focus on,
26:57more on my,
26:59on my phone,
26:59with my phone.
27:03Now, this one are marks of
27:05an intelligent person,
27:07but you just have to pick one.
27:08Photographic memory,
27:10or you can read people's minds.
27:14Photographic memory,
27:15or you can read people's minds.
27:20I would rather choose a,
27:23reading people's minds, sir.
27:25Sige,
27:25anong reading people's minds, man?
27:28For me,
27:28understanding people is like,
27:30a very difficult,
27:32talent put to achieve.
27:34I'm not really good at reading the atmosphere put, sir.
27:36So,
27:37having this kind of power,
27:39I think I can help put,
27:41to,
27:43mustabay silang vibes,
27:44and, like,
27:46know what,
27:46same mga problema na aga nila,
27:48and,
27:48I can cooperate with.
27:51And,
27:51and now,
27:52because of your,
27:53recent milestones,
27:55more people would be,
27:56interested to,
27:58collaborate,
27:58and,
27:59work with you.
28:00So,
28:00two choices.
28:01You will have,
28:02an opportunity of a lifetime,
28:04but you need to leave,
28:06the country.
28:08or,
28:09you stay in the Philippines,
28:11and build your own from scratch.
28:14Okay,
28:15I,
28:16I think I have answered this from,
28:17my previous press conference,
28:19but,
28:19I choose to,
28:20stay here in the Philippines,
28:22because,
28:23I was,
28:24aside from being a,
28:25DOST,
28:25that I had to render for,
28:26your service,
28:27but,
28:28I feel guilty,
28:29Mark,
28:31I use my knowledge,
28:32I use my knowledge here,
28:33in the Philippines,
28:34and just to,
28:34use it to improve,
28:35other country,
28:36they're all,
28:37already developing,
28:39compared to the Philippines,
28:40need to be more,
28:43in the country.
28:44And,
28:44we need,
28:45more Filipinos,
28:47and,
28:47someone who's like you,
28:48in the country,
28:49so,
28:49thank you for,
28:50choosing the Philippines.
28:52Yes.
28:52Okay,
28:54be famous for something,
28:55you did not,
28:57expect,
28:58or,
29:00excel at something,
29:02nobody,
29:04notices.
29:05I would choose,
29:06to excel at something,
29:07sir,
29:07even when,
29:07people don't notice.
29:09For me,
29:09sir,
29:10like,
29:10fame is not,
29:11really,
29:12a thing for me,
29:13sir,
29:13even though,
29:13I would still be proud,
29:17of what I achieved,
29:18sir,
29:18guy.
29:19I reflect,
29:20with myself,
29:20I can see,
29:21you grow,
29:22and then,
29:23those years,
29:25all of your,
29:26like,
29:26mga kahago,
29:27like,
29:28the,
29:28mong gipangang kamot,
29:29na pay offered,
29:30even though,
29:31there was no one,
29:31nobody watching,
29:32sa,
29:33mong side,
29:34nga,
29:34nagtuon kamayo,
29:35and then,
29:36even,
29:36naglisod kag sabot,
29:38na,
29:39and sa kong family food,
29:40na,
29:40naglisod kaya,
29:41still,
29:42like,
29:43I would be proud,
29:44sir.
29:44And,
29:45earlier,
29:45you shared,
29:46no,
29:46that you are very grateful,
29:48to your parents,
29:49you're also blessed,
29:50with the sunny angels,
29:51no,
29:52who are also,
29:53very good friends,
29:54but,
29:54just in case,
29:55you'll have to pick one,
29:57your parents will brag,
29:58about you forever,
30:01or your friends,
30:03will think,
30:03you're the coolest,
30:05person they know.
30:07I'd rather choose,
30:08my parents,
30:08sir.
30:09They were the one,
30:10who have,
30:10supported me throughout,
30:12since kinder of ago,
30:13until college,
30:14and my friends,
30:15were just,
30:16a chapter,
30:17like,
30:17a segment,
30:17from my journey.
30:19It's more about,
30:20the longevity,
30:21sir,
30:22who have me,
30:22by my side,
30:23throughout the years.
30:24And,
30:24I would agree with you,
30:25with that,
30:26because I also believe,
30:27that there are just,
30:28so many variables,
30:29in the world,
30:30but our family,
30:31is the closest,
30:31we can have,
30:32to a constant.
30:33So my final question,
30:34for you is,
30:36have your Google search,
30:39history,
30:39displayed,
30:40on national TV,
30:42or the messages,
30:43on your phone,
30:45on national TV?
30:48I would rather,
30:49have my,
30:50co-answer,
30:50Google history,
30:52to be publicized.
30:53Sige,
30:53because?
30:54Because it contains,
30:55like,
30:56all of my,
30:57I'm inspired,
30:58with what I'm talking about,
30:58even though,
30:59the simplest question,
31:00how would you ask?
31:00I even asked it,
31:01on Google,
31:02like,
31:02how to arrive this,
31:04like,
31:04what is X plus Y?
31:06So,
31:06it is like,
31:07a mark of my,
31:10hard work,
31:10and achievements,
31:11with her.
31:11Like,
31:11from my progress,
31:13manotice nila,
31:13siguro,
31:14like,
31:14from the start,
31:15I have this simple question,
31:16and later on,
31:17must naga-improve,
31:18on questions,
31:19and naga-develop.
31:20So now,
31:21let's go back,
31:21to the serious stuff,
31:23now.
31:23So,
31:24I can tell,
31:25that you're,
31:26disciplined,
31:27you're also,
31:29intentional.
31:29But,
31:30discipline also,
31:31the reason,
31:32why we need discipline,
31:33it's because,
31:33there really are moments,
31:35that,
31:37you need to decide,
31:38to stay disciplined.
31:40So,
31:40what are your,
31:41hacks,
31:41mansa,
31:42that you can share,
31:42to our audience,
31:44on how they can,
31:45remain focused,
31:47and,
31:47discipline,
31:49regardless,
31:49less of the destruction,
31:51and the circumstance,
31:52around them.
31:54So,
31:55how to maintain,
31:56like,
31:56focus,
31:57discipline,
31:59you have to make,
32:00your plan,
32:01you have to,
32:02like,
32:03map out,
32:03what you have to do,
32:04these next few days,
32:06delirang mag-agad ka,
32:07sa circumstances,
32:08once I feel,
32:08nino,
32:09mag,
32:10buhatan nino ako,
32:11kung,
32:11one feel lang ako,
32:12and then,
32:13mag-agad,
32:13sa motivation,
32:15you have to,
32:16rely more on,
32:17your discipline,
32:18and your habits,
32:19if you have a bad habit,
32:20you have to change it,
32:22as soon as possible,
32:23you have to find,
32:24ways to,
32:25like,
32:25rectify it,
32:27or,
32:27you have to find,
32:28ways to,
32:28like,
32:29change yourself,
32:30because,
32:31your character,
32:32is what,
32:33what you define,
32:34put in the future,
32:35so,
32:35if,
32:35didyemo,
32:36ilisidan mo,
32:37so,
32:38it will remain,
32:39stuck up from you,
32:40forever.
32:41And then,
32:42how do you also,
32:43draw the line,
32:44this is the time,
32:45for me to push harder,
32:48or,
32:48this is the time,
32:49for me to,
32:51rest lang sa,
32:53okay,
32:53di ba,
32:54that's a decision making,
32:55point man nga,
32:56so,
32:56why,
32:57siguro,
32:57ang,
32:58solution na ni,
32:59or,
33:00push harder,
33:01ang solution na ni,
33:01how do you distinguish,
33:04which route to take,
33:06okay,
33:06sa akong experience,
33:07experience sa,
33:08sir,
33:08kay,
33:08more on,
33:09I tend to push harder,
33:10sa akong self,
33:11sir,
33:12and while I rest,
33:13because,
33:14I have this,
33:15goal man,
33:15dyan nga,
33:16ganana kong maachieve,
33:17so,
33:18basin,
33:19if man,
33:19nangkamat mo maayaw,
33:20bala,
33:20ikapay ko,
33:21it will all pay off man,
33:23in the end po,
33:23so,
33:24nara ko,
33:24yung time,
33:25rest after,
33:26and,
33:26and by the way,
33:27that's also the advantage,
33:28that you also love,
33:30what you do,
33:31yes sir,
33:31okay,
33:32you don't,
33:33you don't need a vacation,
33:35because,
33:36just by doing,
33:37what you love,
33:38you're already happy,
33:39about,
33:39what you are doing,
33:41sige,
33:41what is the most important thing,
33:43man said,
33:43that you learn from school,
33:44now,
33:45or from CITU,
33:46for that matter,
33:48that's,
33:48not found on textbooks,
33:51it's,
33:52I think,
33:53the,
33:54aside from the,
33:56knowledge that I learn,
33:57from books,
33:58and from,
33:58the concepts,
33:59in classroom,
34:00but,
34:00I learn,
34:02many things,
34:02with like,
34:03cooperating in group works,
34:05and understanding,
34:06different people,
34:07because,
34:08CITU sir,
34:08it's full of,
34:09diverse people,
34:10with different,
34:11backgrounds,
34:12and then,
34:12knowing a lot of them,
34:13with,
34:13their,
34:14their,
34:14their,
34:15you learn how to,
34:17sympathize with them,
34:18you learn how to,
34:19like,
34:19understand their,
34:21like,
34:21more of their culture,
34:22and background,
34:23but,
34:23we have,
34:24I have friends,
34:25sir,
34:25like,
34:26from Leyte,
34:26and,
34:27Mindanao,
34:27and,
34:28from,
34:29purely from Cebu,
34:30and,
34:30even though,
34:31despite their differences,
34:32they,
34:33they are all the same,
34:34sir,
34:34like,
34:34they can feel,
34:35like,
34:35they can think,
34:36and,
34:36they can,
34:37like,
34:38they're,
34:38like,
34:38as put there.
34:40Just like,
34:41everyday person,
34:42Now,
34:43because,
34:43you're focused,
34:44you're intentional,
34:45you're disciplined,
34:47when do you think,
34:49at least,
34:49in your view,
34:50no?
34:50Can ambition,
34:51already become,
34:53unhealthy?
34:54No?
34:55Hmm.
34:56Hmm.
34:59At least,
35:00if you're,
35:00if you're discerned,
35:01by the viewers,
35:02no?
35:03How do you say,
35:03you know,
35:04I'm not healthy,
35:04my ambition?
35:06Okay,
35:06sir,
35:06I'm very,
35:08I'm very,
35:09like,
35:09I'm very sick,
35:10because I don't have a life,
35:11and,
35:11I experience,
35:12I experience,
35:13I'm very,
35:14I'm very,
35:15but still,
35:16I don't really,
35:18suggest foods,
35:18if I'm hungry,
35:20maybe,
35:20like,
35:21you have to take a break,
35:22food,
35:23for some time,
35:24even though,
35:25you love what you do,
35:26you have to,
35:27rest food,
35:28like,
35:28you have to,
35:29take your food,
35:30yourself,
35:30aside,
35:31although you want,
35:32this dream,
35:32but,
35:33you have to really,
35:34make,
35:35stay yourself healthy.
35:37And then,
35:38Sikir,
35:39we're,
35:39towards on,
35:40the closing part,
35:41of this conversation,
35:43and,
35:43I'm,
35:44also enjoying,
35:46this,
35:46and I hope,
35:47you are.
35:48Sikir,
35:49so,
35:50just in case,
35:50we also have viewers,
35:52about,
35:52who are doubting themselves,
35:54no,
35:55like,
35:56is engineering,
35:57really for them,
35:58or,
35:58they need to,
36:00take other courses,
36:01what would you,
36:02tell them,
36:03and Sard,
36:03when they make,
36:04those decisions,
36:05na,
36:05ah,
36:05when you have this,
36:08the,
36:08engineering is for you.
36:10Okay,
36:10sir,
36:11so,
36:12sa engineering,
36:12sir,
36:13it's not really,
36:14more,
36:14although,
36:14it's more about math,
36:15but,
36:16the main factor,
36:17jit,
36:17nga,
36:18maka-graduit,
36:18kais,
36:19more on,
36:20ah,
36:21how much you,
36:22put your effort,
36:23into this,
36:23rather than,
36:24like,
36:24natural intelligence,
36:26lang,
36:26guys,
36:27pisa kong,
36:27damatayin sir,
36:28na,
36:28mga,
36:28rag-bright,
36:29but,
36:29sir,
36:29nga,
36:30like,
36:31after,
36:32graduation,
36:32kai-marag,
36:34ah,
36:34di sila kapasar sa board,
36:35o,
36:35yun,
36:35pero,
36:36napoy uban nga,
36:37silang,
36:38bis lang silang kakugi,
36:39o,
36:39panikamot,
36:40po,
36:40like,
36:41ganang sila ma-achieve,
36:41kanil nga goal,
36:42sila juda,
36:43mga tao,
36:44like,
36:44mas,
36:45in the end,
36:46kais sila yung madaog sir.
36:49And then,
36:50and I think that would also cover,
36:52kanang questions,
36:53that we always hear,
36:55na,
36:55for some people also,
36:56who they,
36:57who don't necessarily believe,
36:58that they are smart enough,
37:00no?
37:00I think the pattern also,
37:01that I see is,
37:02you may not be smart enough,
37:04but if you're disciplined,
37:05and you're purposeful,
37:07and intentional,
37:08then yes,
37:08you can still achieve your dream,
37:09you can still become an engineer.
37:11Now,
37:11if we go back to the,
37:12to,
37:14because you graduated,
37:15summa cum laude at CITU,
37:16but if we go back to,

37:23Kindergarten, sir.
37:24Primary,
37:25grade 6.
37:25Grade 6.
37:26I was from Guadalupe, sir.
37:28Elementary.
37:28Graduated in Guadalupe,
37:31elementary school,
37:31no?
37:32If you have to tell,
37:33if you have to say something now,
37:35to that Jude,
37:36what would you tell him?
37:38Okay.
37:39So to my younger self,
37:41just continue lang,
37:43what you love,
37:43and trust in God's plans,
37:46food.
37:47Although,
37:48Merag,
37:49grade 6,
37:50kiyat mo kay ko,
37:50and then,
37:51walam jigo'y kalibutan sa,
37:53kwan,
37:54like,
37:54from the world.
37:55So,
37:57I know that,
37:58although,
37:58naglisod ka ron,
38:00ma,
38:00you can get by,
38:01I know that,
38:02Merag,
38:03makayara na mo.
38:04And,
38:05and yes,
38:06towards the closing part
38:07of this conversation,
38:09I'd like to highlight again
38:10that,
38:11Jude graduated
38:12summa cum laude,
38:14and he finished,
38:16no,
38:16with the highest score
38:17among 17,062
38:20examinees.
38:21Now,
38:21that's a dream come true
38:23for you,
38:24but that's still
38:25a dream
38:26that are yet to happen,
38:27no,
38:27for some people
38:28who are watching.
38:29So,
38:30two final questions.
38:31The first one,
38:31but don't worry,
38:32I'll ask you the reverse,
38:33but the first one is,
38:35what can being a top-notcher
38:38cannot give you?
38:39What does being a top-notcher
38:43cannot give you?
38:45Okay.
38:46Being a top-notcher
38:47is like,
38:49a recognition naman.
38:50So,
38:51for me,
38:52what being a top-notcher
38:53cannot give,
38:54it cannot give you friends
38:56with like,
38:57true friends,
38:57and it cannot give you,
38:59like,
39:00naturally,
39:00we're not the best
39:02to be a top-notcher
39:02in the world.
39:04So,
39:06it's a dream.
39:07You're,
39:07I don't know.
39:09Yeah,
39:10you know,
39:10so you can't get
39:11Yeah,
39:11I get your point
39:12when you said,
39:13it's one thing
39:14to be a top-notcher,
39:15but it's another thing
39:16to be a good friend.
39:17Yes, sir.
39:18Right?
39:18Even with a top-notcher camera,
39:20same person,
39:21you're not the same person.
39:22Okay,
39:23so,
39:23the final question
39:24is,
39:25what one,
39:25the one thing
39:26that being a top-notcher
39:27can give you?
39:31Okay,
39:31so,
39:32I just witnessed
39:32this Jude
39:33being a top-notcher,
39:35like,
39:35there are many
39:37interviews,
39:39and then,
39:41maybe,
39:41there are job offerings,
39:42and there are many
39:44people who would
39:45like to congratulate
39:46more than
39:47more than
39:49more than
39:49I would
39:49like to hear.
39:50So,
39:51thank you very much,
39:51Jude,
39:52for your time
39:52and for joining us
39:53today.
39:54Thank you,
39:55sir.
39:55And to CRT,
39:56for allowing us
39:57to have this
39:59conversation with you
40:00considering
40:00the many
40:01interviews
40:02that you are
40:04having this time.
40:05Yes, sir.
40:05Thank you,
40:06sir.
40:06So,
40:07one remarkable
40:08journey to the top,
40:10but today,
40:11we learned
40:11that an examination
40:12can only measure
40:13what we know.
40:14it is what we do
40:16with what we know
40:17that ultimately
40:18matters.
40:19So,
40:20knowledge is not
40:20a destination,
40:22it is a
40:23responsibility.
40:24I'm DJ Moisa,
40:25shout out to
