A special report outlines three major developments across the country. In Mumbai, actor and American citizen Imran Khan was served a notice by police directing him to leave India by 28 October under immigration laws after participating in an agitation demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation. Commentator Cyrus Broacha criticised the action as heavy-handed and argued for the democratic right to peaceful dissent. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister addressed Asian Games medal winners at Major Dhyan Chand Stadium in New Delhi, praising the 85-medal haul, including 38 won by female athletes, and highlighted initiatives like Khelo India while outlining aspirations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and 2036 Olympics. In the national capital, the Supreme Court pulled up Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders over their protest march to the court premises regarding the Special Intensive Revision process, stating that nobody can browbeat the judiciary. The court issued notices to opposition leaders and agreed to examine the de-notification of Jantar Mantar as a protest site.

00:00All right, let's start by throwing two images on your screen.
00:06Let's put that up and let's tell you a little bit of a story over there.
00:12Okay, on your left is a screen in which the real character played by Imran Khan,
00:18Ranjhor Ka Rathhod from 2008 film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na played.
00:23And on your right side, that's Imran Khan in real life,
00:27participating in an anti-CEC protest in Mumbai on October 10th.
00:3218 years separate, these two images,
00:35but the actor has now found himself at the centre of a real-life controversy,
00:41one that could force him to leave India.
00:45Mumbai police have issued Imran Khan a notice directing him to leave the country by the 28th of October.
00:54And the reason? His participation in a political protest despite being a foreign national.
01:00So here's what happened. Let's take you through the timeline.
01:02On 10th of October, Imran Khan joined protesters at Mumbai's August Kranti Maidan,
01:07who were demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
01:11The protest was organised in solidarity with the Kokra Janta Party's agitation.
01:15Police detained the actor, along with hundreds of other protesters during the demonstration.
01:20But the controversy did not end there.
01:23BJP leader Kirat Somaiya approached the police,
01:26questioning how a foreign national could participate in a political agitation.
01:31He sought action against the actor and raised concerns over involvement of foreign citizens in such protests.
01:38The COP subsequently issued a notice citing alleged violation of immigration and foreigners-related laws.
01:45But what exactly is this law? Let's deep dive into that.
01:48Section 7 of the Immigration and Foreigners Act 2025 empowers the central government of India to issue orders, directions or
01:58instructions to regulate, restrict or prohibit the entry, sort of departure, presence or even movement of foreigners in India.
02:08Section 29 of the Act governs the power of removal.
02:11Imran Khan is an American citizen and an overseas citizen of India or OCI.
02:17He's a cardholder.
02:18While OCI status allows eligible foreign individuals and citizens to live in India under specific condition,
02:25it does not confer Indian citizenship.
02:28Restrictions also apply on certain political activities.
02:32But what does this mean?
02:34Will this be allowed to certain other actors, celebrities who have foreign passports?
02:41How will this really work in the case of other, some protestors who also hold foreign passports?
02:49Well, so far we've not seen the film industry react at all on this piece of news.
02:55But this is what Imran Khan said in his own words the day he went for that protest and proudly
03:03went in for detention.
03:15we are.
03:20Okay, this is what I've told him.
03:22Remember, I will.
03:24Yeah.
03:26He lived there...
03:29You are.
03:31I was.
03:33You are.
03:52I believe that it is important for everyone to show up and show that there that we are
04:01not afraid and that there is actually no danger and no threat over here.
04:05The only threat is from all of these people attacking with sticks.
04:11All right, Imran Khan over there happily was talking to the media, going into the protest.
04:17Moments later, he was detained and now he faces a charge, a notice that he has to leave
04:24the country as well.
04:25Let me bring in our guest there to get a perspective on this matter.
04:29Joining me is Cyrus Brocha, he's a theatre personality, comedian, satirist, columnist,
04:33podcaster and author.
04:35I'm trying to understand Cyrus here.
04:39How are we seeing this entire notice of Imran Khan to leave the country?
04:45How do you see it?
04:47Yeah, first I'm carrying everything.
04:49I have my Aadhaar card.
04:51I've got my passport, everything here so that there's no trouble after this interview to
04:55make sure it's all cool.
04:57I find this a little ridiculous, honestly.
04:59I think the right to dissent and right to protest should be fulfilled if we're a democracy.
05:04And if he wants to do that, let him do that.
05:06The technicality of whether he's a citizen or not, I mean, it's also a bit ridiculous
05:09and he's just like a soft target.
05:11I don't know why this is even news, quite frankly.
05:14I mean, South Africa had a fantastic test match where we saw a great test in the 190 by
05:19Matt Venture.
05:20I'd rather discuss that.
05:21But quite honestly, I think the government is going, the whole thing is, they need some
05:26help.
05:26They need my advice.
05:27What they're doing is not working.
05:29I speak to a lot of these young people.
05:31I use them to lean on when I'm physically tired.
05:34I put my hand on their shoulder and, you know, they hold me up.
05:36So I get a lot of feedback from them.
05:38And I don't think this is the right thing to do.
05:40I think, honestly, the only way forward in any democracy is dialogue, conversations, discussions,
05:45explanations, that kind of thing.
05:47And this is looking a little scary, you know, when we have 30 odd thousand in Delhi is closed
05:51down, a police on, you know, you can't even walk around, an army personnel being called
05:56out for just what is, at the face of it, just a protest, just a march, you know, dissent
06:02of some sort.
06:03So I'm a little scared about all that.
06:05But coming back to the Imran Khan thing, I honestly think, why is this even an issue?
06:11You're saying why is it even an issue?
06:13But is the film industry also thinking like that?
06:16I know you don't speak for them.
06:18People are scared.
06:18Nobody wants to talk.
06:19People are still a little worried.
06:21They say what they want to say behind closed doors, but they won't say anything openly.
06:26This guy, you'll, cynics will say he does this for publicity, because it goes viral
06:30immediately.
06:31And we're all talking about this, even though we're doing a show a few days later.
06:35And you can have that thought, but at the end of the day, I mean, he has the right to
06:37join a protest.
06:38Aren't we in a democracy?
06:39Can't people show disagreement, dissent?
06:43Can't people, you know, peacefully protest?
06:45I mean, isn't that part of the whole social fabric?
06:48And then coming to the point of singling him out, I think it's a little petty here.
06:52It's so unnecessary.
06:53Okay, so he holds a passport, American passport.
06:55He lives and works here.
06:56And, you know, everybody knows that.
06:58So I think I'm not happy.
07:00I'm not happy with this whole situation.
07:02I wish I was in leadership.
07:05But Cyrus, this is not the first time.
07:07Every time we've seen Bollywood come out, at least in the near future that I can recall,
07:12past 10, 12 years or so, if one can recall every time a celebrity has shown dissent.
07:17The one big one comes to mind is Deepika Padukone, when she had gone and she had stood with some
07:22protesters at JNU.
07:23Then we saw cases against her, all of that.
07:26The opposition, again, the critics would say that all of these are pressure tactics to ensure
07:30that voices of dissent and popular voices of dissent are kept at bay.
07:35Would you agree?
07:37Look, the fact of the matter is people aren't the famous people, VIPs, people who earn much
07:42more money than you, me and all the worlds we live in are not speaking up.
07:46The reason they're not speaking up is because there's a sense of fear.
07:48So if I was the government, I would reduce that sense of fear, allow a little dissent and
07:52win this argument with the battle of minds and dialogue, because that's what's going to
07:56count in the end.
07:57We're not a fascist state.
07:58We're not going to become North Korea.
07:59We're not going to beat people.
08:00It's not going to become Tiananmen Square.
08:02So let's face it, you can only win by winning people over, and you win people over by having
08:06conversations, explain SIR, explain the election commissioner's pattern and procedure, explain
08:12all that, put your argument forward.
08:13That's the only way, as far as I'm concerned.
08:15Why are we wasting time with poor Imran Khan?
08:18You know, I mean, the real Imran Khan was in captivity in another country, and this poor
08:22fellow is just being badgered for nothing.
08:24You know, and he went, he attended a protest, which was largely peaceful.
08:27My son went that day to pick up a friend from, I don't know if you're familiar with
08:31Mumbai, Grand Road Station, and the police sent him back.
08:33You know, they shut the whole area.
08:35I mean, it's not like a terrorist attack of sorts.
08:38You know, I think the whole overreaction, and it's a little scary, because we become
08:42like a police state, and that's not fun.
08:43And in the meantime, then this becomes a big issue, which is not an issue.
08:47One guy who's well-known, you know, part of the protest, and then you sort of pick on
08:52him, and is he a foreigner, not a foreigner?
08:53I mean, who cares, really, after a period of time?
08:56I hear you, but you're saying something important, Cyrus.
08:59You are saying that the film industry is scared, and acts like this enforce that fear even
09:06further.
09:09Don't you think that's true?
09:10I mean, where the voices of the really, the A celebrities, the super big guns, and whether
09:14they're actors and cricketers, or, you know, but even the business community, everyone, I
09:19mean, they'll say one thing, but they won't say anything openly.
09:22And just this idea to support free speech, and allowing people to have different opinions,
09:27and to actually question, I mean, you have to question governance, that's part of being
09:31in a state of democracy, I would think.
09:34So I, as long as the protest is peaceful, as long as people are behaving in a civil manner,
09:40and in a courteous sort of manner, what is the big issue about all this?
09:43He was very well-behaved from what I could see from the video.
09:46Imran, I don't think he misbehaved at all.
09:48And maybe he was a little saki or cheeky, but that's fine, that's allowed.
09:53Yeah, so I'm a little, I am a little disappointed that we don't have voices of famous people,
09:59if you like, or voices that count the movers and shakers, not enough of them.
10:02If they believe in this cause, they should come out and talk about it.
10:05Definitely, 100%, that's not happening.
10:07Movers and shakers, or Shaker Suman, if lifting to this will not agree with you at the moment.
10:12No, he is, he's doing his bit.
10:13He's doing his bit, no question.
10:15In fact, I thought he was one of the voices of, you know, let's say, who go by the book,
10:21but it turned out to be quite different.
10:22And yeah, he's actually going hammer and tongs.
10:24And again, that's basically satire.
10:27And if we don't support satire and, you know, somebody using humor to make a point, etc.,
10:31then I mean, there's nothing left.
10:32I might as well go back to Bharatanatyam and, you know, I do recitals.
10:36What is there against Bharatanatyam, man?
10:38I mean, I also trained in one.
10:40Let's not go there.
10:42Let's not go there, Cyrus.
10:43But let me ask you.
10:44So why can't you, me and Imran put up a nice recital and bring India together again?
10:48That's a good one.
10:49We'll ask Imran Khan, if he manages to stay back in India, to answer that and take up your proposal.
10:55But let me ask you a slightly, you know, play the devil's advocate here.
11:00Many online have said that this was Imran Khan's, supposed to be Imran Khan's big comeback.
11:06The last time we saw him was in Jaane Tuya, Jaane Na.
11:09He's done a couple of movies, but that's been his biggest role.
11:11The memes online, I'm sure you've seen.
11:13I'll ask my producer to flash them on the screen also.
11:15This Gran Jhor Ka Rathod on his horse has become quite a meme.
11:21People are saying that.
11:22People are saying, you know, he can actually dance.
11:26He can actually protest, but he can't live in India.
11:29All sorts of memes are being made online.
11:32He seems to have caught the imagination of the young people at least.
11:36But, you know, at this point, many would say that, was this a publicity stunt?
11:41Could this have been a publicity stunt?
11:44I think even if it was, or rather if it was slightly, part of that, you know, they're not stupid.
11:50People know by going there, they're known people, they're going to be seen.
11:53People who are famous know that they're going to be pictured, photographed, talked about.
11:57They know there's a good chance, it's good.
11:58I mean, let's face it, that's definitely there.
12:00But that's sort of negative for me, you know.
12:02At the end of the day, he went and put his hand up and joined that protest and got detained.
12:07It was a very uncomfortable thing to do.
12:09He went and did all that, and he kept his sense of humor.
12:11He was quite charming.
12:12He was not badly behaved at all.
12:14So if I was in charge of the entire country, I would not minus points for that.
12:17I mean, he does what he does.
12:19Look, if the same government is in opposition, they would be doing the same thing, joining the CJP or whoever
12:24is protesting, the kids or whatever you want to call them.
12:27And that's the way it should be.
12:29That's what democracy is.
12:30If you leave aside the issue for a second, the idea that you are allowed to show dissent, to disagree,
12:35to argue, to protest peacefully, and to have some sort of dialogue to come to, I mean, any civil situation
12:42across the world, that's the only way.
12:44Let's just hold on.
12:45I'm told the Prime Minister is speaking with the Asian Games winners.
12:50Let's just quickly take a look at that.
13:20The Prime Minister is speaking with the Prime Minister.
13:22The Prime Minister is speaking with the Prime Minister.
