00:12Brazil Senate has approved Lula da Silva's flagship proposal to reduce weekly walking hours and guarantee two paydays off.
00:20The victory for workers' rights comes just days before the presidential runoff between Lula and far-right candidate Flavio Bolsonaro,
00:27as workers and students take to the streets to demand a further working model.
00:32Valdeiro Santos reports from Rio de Janeiro.
00:35October 14th marked a significant day for workers' rights in Brazil, as the Senate approved a proposal backed by President
00:42Lula da Silva to reduce weekly working hours and guarantee two paydays off.
00:47As the debate took place, workers and students took to the streets of Rio de Janeiro to show their support.
00:54It is very important that students and workers are on the streets, because our democracy is in danger and our
01:02sovereignty.
01:04Ending the six times one labor regime was one of Lula's flagship projects.
01:09Demonstrations across the country were key to keep up the pressure for change and build momentum behind the measure.
01:15We need rest. Imagine, Brazilian women have a triple scale of work, at home, at work, everywhere.
01:24We need to vote, not only for women, but for the whole society.
01:28We need rest. Workers need this rest.
01:31Even so, we can produce better as capitalism wants it.
01:36Despite falling short in the first round of the presidential election, Lula da Silva has now scored a political win
01:42that sends a clear message to the far right.
01:45An electoral setback does not mean that people will stop fighting for a fairer society.
01:54I think this fight benefits society as a whole.
01:57A less tired society is a society that can be interested in issues that directly affect us.
02:03This fight is an attempt to deal directly with this social inequality,
02:07which is materialized in the amount of time that the worker has to spend giving money to the boss.
02:16With just days to go before the presidential runoff between Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro,
02:21Rio's streets have become a battleground in a broader, closely contested race over Brazil's future.
