00:00A new Trump ad started airing this week promising Americans $5,000 if Republicans win the midterms.
00:06And this comes right after the administration got their political ads taken off the air.
00:11Here's what's happening.
00:12Trump announced this promise back in September at the Republican Midterm Convention.
00:16If Republicans win both chambers, everyone gets a check.
00:20But no bill to divvy out these $5,000 checks has been introduced yet.
00:24A payment of this size takes an act of Congress and House Speaker Mike Johnson has acknowledged that.
00:30Senator Bernie Moreno says he'll write a bill, but only after the midterms.
00:34He told Fox News it would be funded by new tariffs on foreign companies rather than taxpayer money.
00:40But his office says it has no details yet on who qualifies or when the money would land.
00:45Republicans in the Senate have also pushed back on the cost.
00:48Susan Collins, who chairs the committee that controls federal spending, says it's too expensive.
00:53Ted Cruz wants it structured as a tax refund only for people who work.
00:57The other thing about these ads is that we don't know who paid for them.
01:00The original crop of Trump midterm ads ran on money that Congress set aside for immigration enforcement.
01:06So that's why a judge pulled them off the air.
01:09But Newsweek reports that this new crop of ads that's advertising the $5,000 checks doesn't say where it's getting
01:15its money from.
01:15So should the president be allowed to offer you money that only shows up if the vote goes his way?
