Mexicans mark Cinco de Mayo with re-enactment of historic victory over French forces

The sound of booming cannons echoed in Mexico City on Tuesday as hundreds of residents turned out to mark the 164th anniversary of Cinco de Mayo, the annual celebration of Mexico's legendary victory over French forces in 1862. In the El Penon de los Banos district, families and spectators lined the streets to watch participants dressed in period military costumes recreate the Battle of Puebla, the defining moment when Mexican troops overcame Napoleon Bonaparte's encroaching army on May 5, 1862. The beloved tradition is recognized as an intangible cultural heritage, bringing the local community together each year through a colorful parade and dramatic battlefield reenactment. Over the decades, Cinco de Mayo has grown beyond its military roots to become a proud symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism celebrated across the country. While often mistaken internationally as Mexico's Independence Day, that occasion is marked on September 16, commemorating the launch of Mexico's war of independence from Spain, which lasted from 1810 to 1821.
