Tonight, we'll walk down a steep path in a Norwegian fjord village at the end of October, to a red cottage where the neighbours gather for the last smoke of the year.

Sigrid and Eirik help Granny Britt carry the last racks of smoked fish down to the cellar, then share a slow supper in a garden strung with amber lights. When the plates are empty, everyone lays a small bundle of heather, juniper or apple twigs on the smokehouse coals, and the year's last smoke rises straight up into the stars. Nothing much happens. The fjord laps against the jetty, a fiddle plays softly in the garden, and Eirik falls asleep on the warm smokehouse bench.

First frost, yellow birches and new snow on the peaks, told in a calm, slow voice. The story and the sleep affirmations last about 37 minutes, and soft music carries on after that for about three hours in all, so you can drift off without touching your phone. At 11 minutes the screen fades to black, so the room stays dark while you sleep.
