Tonight, we'll sit outside a stone cottage in Fenmark with a retired train conductor, as cedar smoke rises from the chimneys and the stars come out over the pines.

For thirty-one years Marta Holloway walked the carriages of a mountain railway, checking tickets in a way that never felt like an inspection. She now lives in one long room with a cast-iron stove, in a village between two ridges. One evening in late autumn she carries a chair, a lantern and an old sketchbook out to the gate, draws the tree line and its first star, and writes down the mornings she keeps returning to. Nothing much happens. The smoke thickens, the river of stars crosses the sky, and a music box plays a tune nobody has named.

This is a slow, gentle sleep story about stillness, read in a calm, deep voice at an unhurried pace. The story lasts about 34 minutes, and soft evening music continues to the end so you can drift off without touching your phone. At 5 minutes the screen slowly changes to a dark, starry sky, and at 11 minutes it fades to black, so the room stays dark while you sleep.

If this story helped you rest, The Sleepy Innkeeper has more quiet places to fall asleep in the playlist, and subscribing means the next one will be waiting for you.
