Tonight, we'll spend one October day at Hollow Pines Lodge, where the fire is good, the east trail can wait, and the woodsmoke is in the curtains before anyone notices.

Evelyn has run this Vermont lodge for eleven years. Duncan walks the dock and notes the oarlock. Clara folds the napkins. Noah, whose real talent is talking people out of hiking, chalks up the day: fire good, east trail open. Ruth takes the chair that has never been anyone else's, and Howard, newly retired, opens the field guide about birch trees instead of the east trail. Nothing much happens. The fire is fed twice, the copper light leaves the ridge, and the woodsmoke goes on with its slow, patient work.

A slow, gently funny sleep story about staying put, read in a calm, deep, unhurried voice. The story lasts about 36 minutes, and soft forest music continues to the end so you can drift off without touching your phone. At 5 minutes the screen slowly changes to a dark, starry sky, and at 11 minutes it fades to black, so the room stays dark while you sleep.

If this story helped you rest, The Sleepy Innkeeper has more quiet places to fall asleep in the playlist, and subscribing keeps the next one waiting for you.
