Read this as a story about a pecking order and everything sharpens.
The hockey team isn't a team. It's a ladder. Hunter sits at the top — captain, star, the one whose opinion sets the tone. Ethan sits at the bottom, and the roster never lets him forget it.
When Ethan asks Hayley to prom, he isn't breaking a rule. He's upsetting a hierarchy. The punishment is public and deliberate.
Which is why the text matters so much. It's the first move Ethan makes outside the ladder.
And the twist it plays well: the person at the top of that ladder breaks it first, quietly.
✨ What worked for me:
Watch how the other players react to Ethan. All noise.
Hunter's isolation at the top. Nobody says it.
✨ Bottom line: the cleanest read on high school power I've seen this year.
who really runs that team? 🐺
