A large-scale protest in Delhi brought together political leaders, students, and citizens demonstrating in defence of democratic rights. Senior Congress leaders, including Shashi Tharoor and Digvijaya Singh, spoke about public participation on the streets, describing the gathering as spontaneous and heartening. Shashi Tharoor noted that the action would move to the Supreme Court. Citizens, activists, and students from various states shared their motivations for joining the demonstrations, highlighting concerns over democratic freedoms, voting rights, and alleged crackdowns on student protests. Protesters expressed solidarity with the movement despite police deployment, barricades, and water cannons.

00:00These were the reports that I filed, some of the people I spoke with, some of the leaders I spoke
00:07with just a short while back at Supreme Court, and people who'd come in from regular walks of life. We
00:13leave you with this. Thank you for watching.
00:21For the Congress, have you taken heart in the kind of people that have come out today?
00:25No, well, I think as people who wanted an alternative to this government, I think we saw what the power
00:32of unity can do.
00:34And I saw joy and jubilation amongst a lot of young faces who feel that today they have overthrown the
00:42power of this government.
00:45And I think this is only a step forward. I think more such movements, more such moments need to be
00:51created.
00:51And I think the fortress that Amit Shah and Narinder Modiji tried to convert Delhi into, that fortress got broken
00:59today by the collective will of the Indian people.
01:02But there were not as many. What brings you here, Mr. Tharo? What brings you here?
01:06The defense of democracy, is that why we're all here?
01:09Do you think, is it heartening to see the kind of support you've got on the streets?
01:13It's been amazing. Yeah, we've been out the whole afternoon seeing lots of people.
01:17Were you expecting it?
01:19Well, it's better than we were hoping for it, but it's better than we hoped for. It's amazing.
01:22And I will say that the general sense one has, is that there's been a terrific amount of enthusiasm as
01:29well on the part of those who came.
01:30What's the next course of action, sir?
01:34I think action will move to the Supreme Court tomorrow, I think. And then we'll see what happens.
01:39All right, sir. Thank you. Thank you for joining us.
01:41Sir, two minutes time.
01:44Do you think this is going to be a success?
01:47Pardon?
01:47Do you think the kind of people you've been able to get today on the streets?
01:54At least in the recent past, the Congress hasn't been able to.
01:57Is it heartening?
01:59It is spontaneous. It is not.
02:01It is Martinez.
02:03We seem to have a Batman with us.
02:07Why you dress like the way you are?
02:10What do you dress as a bad man?
02:11No, you made a bad man.
02:14Why do you dress as a bad man?
02:17I'll get up and get up, and then I'll make all the people's power.
02:21Cut! Cut!
02:22Yeah!
02:23It takes all sorts to make a protest, doesn't it?
02:27So, there's a Batman right there.
02:31A lot of, like we've been pointing out,
02:33a legal protest, a legal fraternity joining in.
02:41These are, of course, NSUI students.
02:43A lot of others who are just lining in.
02:45Are you here of your own volition? Why are you here?
02:48We came because we really want to support this movement,
02:51and also we actually want to look forward to what the opposition can bring to the table,
02:55especially in the current situation that we are in.
02:57You've seen the kind of crackdown the last two days.
02:59Aren't you a little wary or scared?
03:02Yeah, but then things are supposed to happen.
03:05Like, despite whatever happened in July, people are still showing up.
03:09So, what is the crackdown that they're doing for two days?
03:12Are you a part of any political party?
03:13Not at the moment.
03:14Not at the moment.
03:15Where are you from?
03:16I'm from Assam, but I grew up here.
03:18I was studying here in Delhi.
03:20So, where are you from?
03:21I'm from Jharkhand.
03:23And you've come here, why?
03:24We've come here to, of course, to show our support for the opposition as well,
03:31but also for the last two days I've been at the protests.
03:34I've seen the crackdowns happen.
03:35I've seen how many people, how students have been brutally suppressed.
03:39And we're hoping more, we're hoping that all sides can come together at some point and show a united front,
03:48like both students, opposition parties, activists, everyone can.
03:51I think that is in the cards.
03:54There is also a sense of young students who are coming in, some with their faces covered, but still holding
04:03placards.
04:32Why are you here?
04:33Why?
04:34In what capacity?
04:34What brings you here?
04:35To use our privilege and to be innocent bystanders, to make sure that people who are not as privileged, if
04:41their rights have been violated, that we can document those violations.
04:44And whether it's with a camera, whether it's with eyes, whether it's with our small in circles, there's also so
04:51much sort of suppression online in terms of, what do you call it, content bans and restrictions and people's accounts
04:59going banned.
04:59What brings you here, ma'am? What brings you here?
05:03Youth brings me here. Youth of the country brings me here.
05:08Have you been protesting in the last couple of days?
05:11No, I, that's my first day.
05:13Today?
05:13She's my aunt, she has been detained, and now again we are here.
05:18After detention you're back here?
05:20In solidarity?
05:22Yeah, of course.
05:23Things are getting a little heated, so I'm quite surprised that we see people.
05:27Where are you from, ma'am?
05:28We are from Delhi only.
05:30You've just come here?
05:31No, no.
05:32We were holding our exhibition here, so we've just come out, and we got the chance to come here.
05:37And we are very happy to support them.
05:41You've come to support the protest.
05:43Yes.
05:43You understand it can get a little heated up, there's a Varun right there, there can be water cannons.
05:48Yeah, yeah.
05:49With that protection, we don't mind that, you know, means if it is there.
05:53But the whole point is what they're, we want to give them strength and Josh and…
05:59Ma'am, your name?
06:00Aarti.
06:01Aarti.
06:02Ma'am, you are also here in support?
06:03Yeah, in support.
06:04Absolutely.
06:05Why, what is your, what has struck a chord that has made you come here and stand at the
06:10final battle?
06:11It is the movement that they are doing, we believe in it.
06:14And I guess we are much older, so we cannot be there, but we can just give them strength.
06:19So we're just standing here, we walked till there, they didn't allow us.
06:22We are with them.
06:24We are with them.
06:26Well, finally some would say Rahul Gandhi struck a chord with the people.
06:29Yes, yes, yes.
06:30Definitely.
06:31He's doing very well.
06:32He's doing very well.
