Along the sunlit Pacific coastline, the southern sea otter spends its days floating within dense giant kelp forests. These remarkable marine mammals have one of the densest coats of fur in the animal kingdom, containing up to one million hairs per square inch. Because they lack insulating blubber, they must consume roughly twenty five percent of their body weight each day just to stay warm in the chilly ocean waters.
To manage this massive appetite, otters have evolved extraordinary foraging strategies. Beneath their forelegs lies a loose pouch of skin used to store collected food and their most prized possession, a favourite rock. Floating comfortably on their backs, they place the stone on their chest and hammer hard shelled clams or crabs against it until the shell cracks open.
After finishing a clam, an otter often dives straight back into the amber kelp canopies to hunt for sea urchins. By devouring these ravenous herbivores, otters protect the kelp forests from being overgrazed. Their everyday feeding habits actively preserve entire coastal ecosystems across California and Alaska.
