In the dry expanses of the African bushveld, few creatures command as much sheer respect as the honey badger, scientifically known as Mellivora capensis. Despite weighing only around ten to sixteen kilograms, this compact carnivore regularly takes on some of the most dangerous venomous snakes on earth, including the spitting cobra and the black mamba.

When confronted by a rearing cobra, the honey badger uses its thick, loose skin and lightning reflexes to press the attack. Its rubbery hide is nearly impenetrable to snake fangs, bee stings, and predator claws. Even if a lethal dose of neurotoxic or cytotoxic venom penetrates its skin, specialized genetic mutations in the badger nicotinic acetylcholine receptors neutralize the toxins.

After taking a direct bite, a honey badger might collapse into a temporary, comatose slumber while its body metabolizes the poison. Within hours, it wakes up, finishes consuming its venomous prey, and ambles away as if nothing happened. Would you dare cross this animal?
