The green sea turtle, known scientifically as Chelonia mydas, is one of the largest marine turtles on Earth. Adults can weigh over 300 pounds and spend their entire lives navigating vast ocean currents. Despite their heavy shells, their large front flippers act like powerful wings, allowing them to glide effortlessly across vibrant coral reefs.

Unlike most other sea turtles, adult green turtles are almost entirely herbivorous. They feed heavily on underwater seagrass beds and marine algae. By constantly trimming these underwater meadows, green turtles keep seagrass ecosystems healthy, which directly supports nurseries for countless species of fish, crabs, and invertebrates.

Coral reefs also benefit greatly from their presence. Cleaner fish often gather around resting turtles to feed on dead skin and algae clinging to their shells. Today, conservationists work globally to protect these ancient reptiles from habitat loss, plastic pollution, and fishing gear entanglement to keep our oceans balanced.
