At twilight, gardens across the British Isles and western Europe transform into thriving nocturnal highways. The European hedgehog, scientifically known as Erinaceus europaeus, emerges from quiet brambles to begin its dusk patrol. Equipped with an extraordinarily sharp sense of smell, this diminutive mammal snuffles across wet grass in search of earthworms, beetles, and slugs.

Covered in roughly six thousand hollow spines made of keratin, the hedgehog carries a built in defense mechanism against predators like foxes and badgers. At the slightest disturbance, specialized circular muscles along its back contract, pulling the spiny coat over its head and feet to form an impenetrable, prickly sphere.

Despite their small legs, individual hedgehogs can easily roam up to two miles in a single night. Modern suburban development and sealed garden fencing have fragmented these ancestral corridors, making human backyards vital sanctuaries for their survival. Creating small ground level gaps between fences ensures these nocturnal foragers continue to thrive.
