High in the windswept Scottish Highlands, the mountain hare endures some of the most brutal winter conditions in Britain. Known scientifically as Lepus timidus, this resilient mammal undergoes a dramatic seasonal transformation. As autumn fades, its brownish grey coat sheds completely, replaced by a dense, snow white pelage that offers both crucial thermal insulation and near perfect camouflage against deep moorland drifts.

Survival here is a constant test of vigilance. Predators such as golden eagles, red foxes, and wildcats constantly scan the snowy expanses for any sudden sign of movement. To stay alive, the mountain hare relies on extraordinary senses, freezing perfectly still until danger approaches too close, then exploding into bursts of speed reaching up to 60 kilometres per hour across frozen terrain.

When resting, it hollows out simple scrapes in the snow known as forms, where it shelters from biting gales and nibbles on woody shoots of heather. These silent masters of camouflage prove that surviving the harshest mountain winters requires both speed and the art of vanishing.
