North Korea fired multiple ballistic missiles toward the sea off its eastern coast on Monday, according to South Korea’s military, in a development that comes days after Seoul conducted a test of its newly developed hypersonic weapon.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missiles were launched from an area near Pyongyang at approximately 9:20 a.m. local time. At least one type of missile reportedly traveled more than 900 kilometers (559 miles).

Japan’s Coast Guard also reported detecting two unidentified projectiles believed to be ballistic missiles. Japanese authorities said the objects appeared to have fallen into the sea.

South Korea’s National Security Office convened an emergency meeting following the launches. Seoul condemned the activity, describing it as a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, and called on Pyongyang to stop such actions.

North Korea has faced United Nations sanctions since 2006 over its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.
