Willard and Dibs explain how the 49ers' defense may be their strength in this game because this group is almost entirely different from the group that took the field the last time the 49ers played the Seahawks.

00:00Here's the player I want to circle, and this is purposeful, I guess is the best way I can say
00:07this.
00:07I am going to circle as a or the key player in this football game on Sunday.
00:15Dre Greenlaw.
00:17Ooh, I like that.
00:19Dre Greenlaw, for two reasons, maybe even three.
00:23Number one, great muscle memory in Seattle.
00:26Obviously, we know he made one of the biggest defensive plays in the history of this organization at Lumen Field
00:32years ago up against Russell Wilson.
00:36Helps secure the one seed for the 49ers that year en route to the Super Bowl.
00:42That's number one.
00:44Number two, he's so representative to me of what this 49er defense was missing last year on two fronts.
00:53Number one, Fred Warner needed a partner.
00:57For a while, it was Dee Winters, and it seemed like the fans dug that.
01:01He had a nice game last night, actually.
01:03I was going to say Dee Winters.
01:03He got called out last night there with the Cowboys, but the Niners clearly weren't big on him,
01:07or they weren't going to have dealt him for a late draft pick in the offseason.
01:12So, Fred Warner has a partner, and then the last thing is, I think Dre Greenlaw,
01:18I'm so stuck on what Kyle Shanahan had said after the game last week where he's like,
01:22if I were to get a jersey of one of the players on this team, it would be Dre Greenlaw.
01:26I was like, wow!
01:27That's not what people would think.
01:29I think that Dre has brought back a meanness, a ferocity, an attitude to this defense that I can feel.
01:39I think we're seeing it.
01:41And there's something about his leadership, about his attitude, about the way he approaches a game,
01:48and I think it is everything that is needed in this matchup.
01:52Because I don't think the 49ers went to Seattle week two of the playoffs last year with a whole lot
01:58of confidence.
01:59I really don't.
02:00And neither did I, as a fan.
02:03Be real.
02:03Did you think they were going to win that football game before it even started?
02:06No, but I thought if, you know, things went right early and if they had a game like they did
02:12in week 18,
02:12if they kind of hung around and were able to run the ball and keep it close and do the
02:17Shanahan stuff,
02:18which is possess it, run it, you know, kind of keep things contained,
02:22and then you kicked it and Rashid Shahid took it 95 or whatever to his house,
02:27and it was 7-0, and Lumen Field is having a beast quake and all the rest of it.
02:32At that point, you thought, oh, boy, uh-oh.
02:34So, and I'm looking right now at the playing percentages on defense.
02:40Eric Kendricks, linebacker, played every snap.
02:43Siegel and Mustafa and Diomino Lenore.
02:46Then you had Dee Winters play 85%.
02:48So, so far, the two linebackers I mentioned not on the team.
02:51Garrett Wallow, he played 62%, and I think he's on the team or special teamer kind of guy.
03:00He's on the roster, but yeah.
03:01Your D-lineman, Alfred Collins, won't play.
03:05CJ West, won't play.
03:07Keon White will play.
03:09Jordan Elliott, I don't think so.
03:12Not playing, nope.
03:12Sam Okawonu.
03:13Not playing.
03:14Kalia Davis.
03:15Not playing.
03:16Cleland Furrell.
03:17Not playing.
03:18Bryce Huff.
03:19Not playing.
03:20Like, literally not playing.
03:22Yuter Gross Matos.
03:23Not playing.
03:24So, those are your D-linemen in order of play time.
03:27And so, I think Keon White at 47% would be your only rep.
03:32So, when you say, like, last year is different than this year.
03:35Say what you just said again, please.
03:37Say it slow.
03:37How many defensive players last year for the San Francisco 49ers in this matchup are going to be on the
03:46field today?
03:46Did you just tell me that more than half of the defense this year was not there last year?
03:54Potentially not even on the team.
03:55It's more than three quarters.
03:57I'm thinking about Marquis Siegel, who I think he's hurt, right?
04:00So, he won't play.
04:01He's out.
04:01Yeah, he has a high angle.
04:02But he's on the team.
04:03Of course.
04:04Mustafa played every snap.
04:05He'll play.
04:06He'll play.
04:06Demo, D'Amer Lenore, every snap he'll play.
04:09Renardo Green played 94%.
04:11He'll play.
04:12And then beyond that, it's Winters, Wallow, Collins, West.
04:16They won't play.
04:17That's all no's.
04:18Keon White, he played half the game.
04:19He's in.
04:21Elliott, Okawonu, Kalia Davis, Clulon Furl, Bryce Huff, Yuturgo Smato.
04:25Those are all no's.
04:26Right.
04:27So, that's it.
04:28That's it.
04:29So, in the front seven, you're telling me what overlaps from last year to this year is Keon White end
04:37of list.
04:38That's what you just said to me.
04:39I think that's kind of what I didn't say it like that.
04:42It would have been better if I just would have cut to the chase.
04:44So, so.
04:45The chase to reach?
04:46I think.
04:47So, that tells me that maybe we should expand.
04:53This is all I'm saying now.
04:55I get it.
04:56We're fans.
04:57We are the constant from last year to this year.
04:59That's why we're filled with anxiety.
05:01But this, hey, we've got to get them back thing that we're doing, the front seven is like, what are
05:07you talking about?
05:08We weren't here.
05:09We don't need to get them back.
05:10We just need to, we need to be who we are this year.
05:14Fred Warner.
05:16Dre Greenlaw.
05:17Odigizua.
05:19Grayson Holton.
05:20Odigizua.
05:23Jaden Duggar.
05:26Gosh, give me some more names.
05:27Sebastian Valdez.
05:29Romello Height.
05:30You know, even Jair Brown.
05:33Kareem Khalif.
05:34If I say it wrong every time.
05:37Khalid Kareem.
05:39Khalid Kareem.
05:40Ballpark.
05:40Yeah.
05:41Kareem's the last name.
05:42Small G's.
05:43First name.
05:43Yeah.
05:43Khalid Kareem.
05:44I should have put the comment in there.
05:45Anyway, this is not the same team at all.
05:50Different coordinator too.
05:52Yeah.
05:52Different scheme.
05:53So this is, and the reason I pick a defensive player is in many ways for the reason that you
05:59just brought up.
06:00This is the side of the ball that nobody even wants to think about because it's not cool.
06:05It doesn't make for good radio or television or social commentary.
06:11Like, Mike McDonald's a defensive guy.
06:13Kyle Shanahan's an offensive guy.
06:15So let's just talk about that.
06:17Kyle Shanahan's offense and Mike McDaniel's defense.
06:20And damn, yeah, that's compelling.
06:22There's no doubt we got to do that.
06:24Kyle's got to, he's got to unlock some things.
06:27Brock Purdy's got to shake some cobwebs off.
06:29There's no question.
06:30But, oh, by the way, they will arrive in this game with a complete, we should do the pass catchers
06:36next.
06:37Well, we can do this two years.
06:38Let's do it.
06:39Burford played every snap.
06:40Not playing.
06:41McKivitt's, Poonie, Brendel, and Williams.
06:43Okay, they're playing.
06:44Purdy as well.
06:46Playing.
06:46Juwan Jennings.
06:48Not playing.
06:49Ricky Pearsall.
06:50Not playing.
06:51Luke Farrell.
06:52Playing.
06:52Kyle Juszczyk.
06:53Not playing.
06:55CMC.
06:56Playing.
06:57Tonjus.
06:58Not playing.
06:58Demarcus Robinson.
06:59Not playing.
07:00Kendrick Bourne.
07:01Not playing.
07:01Brian Robinson Jr.
07:03Not playing.
07:03Brian Robinson Sr.
07:05Not playing.
07:05Brian Robinson III.
07:07Not playing.
07:07Making stuff up.
07:08Jordan James.
07:09Not playing.
07:10I don't think.
07:11He's allowed to.
07:11I mean, but he won't.
07:12Sky Moore.
07:14Not playing.
07:16Mac Jones.
07:18Better not play.
07:19Connor Colby played three snaps.
07:20He is playing.
07:21He is playing.
07:22And this was all garbage time, and you had Pleasance and Matt Hennessey.
07:26The point is.
07:27Hennessey.
07:28That's a four.
07:30Arrested Development.
07:31Anyone.
07:3130 years old.
07:32I got it.
07:33You got it.
07:33That's all that matters.
07:34I love the album.
07:34It was underrated.
07:36But if, again, the defense is mostly different.
07:39The offense is, except for the O-line and Brock Parity, it's completely different.
07:44There was no Kittle.
07:45There was no Mike Evans.
07:47There was no, you know, all kinds of different pieces that you're going to have.
07:50So, last year was then.
07:52This year is now.
07:53Does it mean that this group is better than last year?
07:55I actually kind of think it is.
07:57Well, I think everybody thinks it is.
07:59I mean, they're at least, look, they're injured, too, again this year.
08:02We can also go through the names who won't play, who are still on the team.
08:06You know, Juice and Demarcus Robinson, and we wish Dajon Stribling was there.
08:11And, yeah, there will be pieces of the puzzle.
08:13Marquis Siegel.
08:14Nick Bosa, who won't be in this football game.
08:17But, yeah, this is a better team than the team that played in Seattle last year.
08:21But I think, more importantly, to your point, and it is a good one, and it is the one for
08:26me,
08:26this is an incredibly different football team.
08:30So, they better perform better.
08:3241-6, are you kidding me?
08:35Grandy said it earlier, and I agree with him.
08:36We were texting about a lot of stuff today as a group, and he used the word heartbroken.
08:41He'd be heartbroken if this 49er team gets blown out.
08:45I agree with that.
08:47That's a big word for a fan of a 4-1 football team.
08:51It's a big word.
08:53But I agree with that.
08:54But I will say with my chest, they ain't getting blown out.
08:58They're not going to get blown out.
09:01I don't think either of these teams have that in their repertoire, to be honest with you,
09:08unless something gets really weird.
09:11That can always happen.
09:13But the concept of either of these football teams right now taking the field and getting just blown out,
09:20three touchdowns or more, I do not see that as, I mean, that is so, so far down the list
09:27of likelihood.
09:29That, yeah, I just don't see that.
09:32I don't see that as possible.
09:33I don't see it unless it goes the way that the divisional game went, which is, as mentioned, opening kick.
09:39And it is, you know, touchdown, touchdown Seattle.
09:43You go ahead and take that 95 yards.
09:46You're down 7-0.
09:47Niners get a 4th and 1 at the Seattle 40, and they go to use check to the right side.
09:52And this is maybe the play that Grandy hates the most, where he's not going to get the first,
09:57and he fumbles it out of bounds.
09:58They go down.
09:59They get a field goal.
10:00So now you're down 10-0.
10:02Brock Purdy, complete to Tonjes.
10:04Oh, and he fumbles.
10:05So they go down and score.
10:07Now it's 17-0.
10:08After 13 minutes, you're down 17-0 on the road, on a short week, in a spot where you kind
10:16of need to win that game 20-17 anyway,
10:19and you're down 17-0.
10:20So forget the final score.
10:22For me, the opening 13 minutes was the ball game.
10:25You're down 17-0.
10:26You're done.
10:27You lose.
10:28I kind of think that the opening 15 seconds were the ball game.
10:33With that particular group, if you remember what 49er football felt like at that time,
10:38go back the week before against Philadelphia.
10:41Philadelphia, as it turns out, was not a great football team.
10:45And you went in there on the road and somehow won that football game.
10:49But it took everything you had, and it had to go a certain way, and you had to make good
10:57trick plays.
10:57John Jennings throwing the pill.
10:58No plays exactly like it all had to kind of land perfectly.
11:03I'll never forget this.
11:05Trent Williams said something after the Seahawks' loss, and even after the Philadelphia win.
11:11There were two comments he made that I still remember to this day.
11:15They beat Philadelphia, and he spoke about, we get to do this again as brothers next week.
11:24It wasn't like, our goal of winning the Super Bowl is still alive.
11:29It was, we get to do this for one more week.
11:33And then after the game against Seattle, there was very much a resigned look on his face.
11:39I don't remember the exact words that he chose.
11:43But I came away thinking to myself, these guys knew they were about to get their ass kicked.
11:49They're on the death march.
11:51They knew.
11:52Like, and I don't think I'm saying that they knew, knew.
11:55Like, you go in and you try to win, but you needed everything to line up.
12:00It is a miracle that that 49er team won 13 games.
12:05This team's not that team.
12:07This team is very clearly, in my mind, not that team.
12:12Well, not right now, because you've had your quarterback healthy,
12:15and he's on an historic run through four games.
12:18And you, as a team on all sides of the ball, are among the top 11 in advanced metrics in
12:23the past 50 years.
12:25So, yeah, this team is not that team.
12:27And you went to Philly, and it turns out what we know about Philadelphia this year,
12:31and I know that this year is not last year,
12:33but what we learned last year is a little bit like this year,
12:36where Philadelphia is kind of a paper tiger in terms of letting that Niner team come to your house
12:43and beat you in that fashion.
12:45And, yeah, what you're talking about, Mark, is exactly right.
12:47And I'm looking at the number here, and Seattle was a 7.5-point favorite last year in that playoff
12:52game.
12:52And so, okay, things need to go right for you to be able to win that game.
12:57And instead, it's, you know, opening kick, touchdown, you turn it over on downs,
13:02they get a field goal, you fumble, they score, you fumble again, you're down 17-0, it's night-night.
