00:00South African human rights lawyer Navinethem Navi-Palais has been announced as the winner of this year's Nobel Peace Prize.
00:07The Norwegian Nobel Committee says she won for her efforts to promote peace and international law.
00:13Its chair says she's led the way to a more comprehensive global legal order and has done so with exceptional
00:19courage.
00:20Born in Durban, the 85-year-old jurist was the first woman to start a law practice in her home
00:25province of Natal in 1967.
00:28Over the next few years, she acted as a defense attorney for anti-apartheid activists.
00:33Among her other roles, she's acted as a judge in South Africa and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.
00:39Palais also served as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
