South African judge Navanethem “Navi” Pillay has won the Nobel Peace Prize for her work promoting peace and international law. The Nobel Committee says she has spent decades holding states and national leaders accountable while giving hope to victims of violence and conflict.

00:40The Peace Prize is the fifth Nobel award announced this week, following the prizes for literature, chemistry, physics and medicine.
00:49Pillay will receive the award in Oslo on December 10th, the anniversary of the death of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel,
00:55who established the prize in his will.
00:58The prize carries a cash award of 12 million Swedish crowns, equivalent to around 1.2 million US dollars.
