00:00:23ДИНАМИЧНАЯ МУЗЫКА
00:00:44The most physically demanding.
00:00:46The heat, the sweat, the bumps.
00:00:49It's very dangerous.
00:00:53Wow, was that fast!
00:00:54This was the most epic I've ever seen.
00:00:58And it's cracked!
00:00:59Oh, I got damage for damage.
00:01:08My first smooth operation.
00:01:11The walls, don't hit them.
00:01:19A statement waiting.
00:01:20A little bit of the end.
00:01:22No!
00:01:33Night has descended upon Singapore.
00:01:36The Marina Bay circuit lit up by 1,600 floodlights ready for its first ever sprint weekend.
00:01:42We can qualify for tomorrow's daytime sprint race gets underway in just under half an hour.
00:01:49Yes, the clock has just struck 8 o'clock here in Singapore.
00:01:54Night has fallen.
00:01:55We've had one practice session in the daylight.
00:01:58We get a sprint in the daylight.
00:02:00We get sprint qualifying in the dark.
00:02:02We get qualifying in the dark and we get the race in the dark.
00:02:05Therefore, Jenson Button and Naomi Schiff, what have we learnt and what have the teams have learnt from that hour
00:02:12of practice in the night?
00:02:13Will they have aimed all of that running at the sprint and relying on historical data for what they know
00:02:20about things?
00:02:20They haven't run these cars in the dark.
00:02:22I'm confused.
00:02:24It seems.
00:02:25It seems like you are.
00:02:27Well, it's still an hour of practice.
00:02:28It doesn't matter whether it's dark or not.
00:02:30But I think there's still a lot of useful information there for the race.
00:02:34But for the sprint race, it's perfect conditions because that's the conditions they'll be racing it, which I'm really looking
00:02:39forward to.
00:02:39It's going to be really hot on that grid.
00:02:41Well, it is, but you've got your shorts ready, so you should be okay.
00:02:44But that's the whole point with these things, isn't it?
00:02:45We talk about these sessions always being unrepresentative, but yet they are when we come into our first sprint weekend.
00:02:53So maybe I am eventually making sense.
00:02:55No, no, no.
00:02:55You are making sense, Simon.
00:02:56I think typically FP2 is the session that's most representative for qualifying and the race on Sunday.
00:03:02So unfortunately, we don't have one of those today.
00:03:04We're just going to go straight into a competitive session of sprint qualifying.
00:03:08You know, clearly the temperatures have dropped.
00:03:10It feels a lot more comfortable out here than, well, Jenson's like, has it?
00:03:13There's a fan just on here.
00:03:15No, well, it's still very hot, don't get me wrong, but it is cooler than it was for FP1 there
00:03:20earlier today.
00:03:20And, yeah, I think it's been an interesting session out there.
00:03:23A lot of the teams opting to stay in the mediums, only a very few running the softs out there.
00:03:27And we saw quite a big difference between those two compounds.
00:03:30So there is a lot of unknowns going into this sprint qualifying.
00:03:34And, yeah, you're right.
00:03:35The circuit's going to be very different than we had in FP1.
00:03:38The grip level's going to be completely different.
00:03:39It's going to work the tyres differently.
00:03:41It's going to be more difficult to get tyre temperature, especially in those front tyres.
00:03:44Oh, listen to me, I'm excited.
00:03:46Well, there's dust everywhere.
00:03:48Now, this is quite a unique situation.
00:03:50Quite often here you get a haze and a smog, but it's really bad this year.
00:03:54And, in fact, it's at the highest levels for a number of years with regards to a kind of smog.
00:03:59And what this is, it's coming from Indonesia.
00:04:00It's coming from Sumatra and around those areas where they have lots of palm oil plantations.
00:04:06And they have a bit of burning.
00:04:08You see it there, right?
00:04:09So there's that in the atmosphere.
00:04:11And then it settles.
00:04:12And it's going to provide a few problems, you'd think, wouldn't it, this weekend?
00:04:16From what I've heard, a lot of the team members in these teams up and down the paddock have been
00:04:21recommended not to do outdoor exercise.
00:04:23So, you know, we often see team members doing track runs at the end of the day.
00:04:26They recommended not to do that unless they wear a mask.
00:04:29So you've got to ask the question.
00:04:30I mean, we talk about the heat, the humidity, and the challenge on the drivers.
00:04:33Does that add an additional level?
00:04:35Is it safe?
00:04:36Yeah, exactly.
00:04:37I mean, do you ever race when it was like this?
00:04:40I mean, there was some, sometimes you'd get it, but not like this.
00:04:43Yeah, no, it's not a great condition for doing outside fitness.
00:04:48And driving a Formula One car isn't easy.
00:04:50It's very physical.
00:04:51So the drivers are going to feel this, I think, in the race.
00:04:54You can feel it on your chest.
00:04:55Those of us that have been here for a few days, you can definitely feel it when you stand outside
00:04:58for it.
00:04:58Right, a quick look at the drivers and constructors as it stands at the moment.
00:05:03I don't know if it's five or six races to go.
00:05:06But just a quick one on George Russell, in case you're just joining us for the first time this weekend.
00:05:10He's going to take a penalty on an old engine.
00:05:12That's him just walking past, and that's why they're screaming behind us.
00:05:15And then potentially another one for when it is upgraded, and we think that might be in Austin.
00:05:20So he's very much on the back foot.
00:05:22Kimi Antonelli with one hand on the trophy.
00:05:25Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are too far off, but 23 points separating the two Ferrari drivers.
00:05:30They finished third and fourth a week ago, despite starting on the wrong tyres, the six in the wet.
00:05:35Then Lando Norris and Max Verstappen tied on points.
00:05:39We'll come to Max in a moment, because there's a bit of work going on in his car.
00:05:41Looks like an ERS issue, the rest of the top ten.
00:05:44Piastri Hadjar, Lawson and Gasly.
00:05:47Lawson with a top seven finish last time out, ahead of his teammate Arvid Lidblad,
00:05:53who drove from the back and into the top ten himself, and picking up a point.
00:05:58Whereas the two Alpine drivers didn't.
00:05:59Still two to get off the mark.
00:06:01Bottas and Perez were hoping that maybe they have an outside chance this weekend,
00:06:05because it's not that power hungry.
00:06:07Racing Bulls, as you can see, at the front of the midfield, and 22 clear of Alpine,
00:06:13because Alpine didn't have either of the points last weekend.
00:06:16So picking up a little bit of leeway on them.
00:06:19But Mercedes was just a question of when, not if, they win the Constructors.
00:06:24However, Toto appearing in the press conference in between sessions here,
00:06:30as Kimi Antonelli, the championship leader, walks past,
00:06:33asked about whether there'd been any favoritism this year within the team.
00:06:38He was spiky in his response.
00:06:40What would you say to those people who feel that the team has favored Kimi at times?
00:06:46They're brainless.
00:06:48Whoever thinks that.
00:06:51I mean, it's completely nonsensical.
00:06:53We've had it in the past with Lewis fans.
00:06:56I mean, literally, I don't know what's going on.
00:07:01Do they think I have a button that says,
00:07:04George, engine failure now?
00:07:09Or disadvantaging one driver against the other
00:07:13when we're fighting for a constructor championship,
00:07:15when we've always had the mindset of providing everybody equal material.
00:07:23But I guess, you know, maybe where social media goes today,
00:07:26you know, people hide behind their screens.
00:07:32And then they lash out.
00:07:35There's a lot of polarization going on.
00:07:41And, you know, sometimes I read what people write.
00:07:45I find it hilarious.
00:07:46These people really contribute to my own entertainment
00:07:49when they're abusing the team.
00:07:51I myself.
00:07:52I'm Satan, I've heard.
00:07:56So, yeah, overall, funny.
00:07:59Silver Arrow rules will fix it.
00:08:02Yeah.
00:08:02Yeah, you obviously, you...
00:08:05I've got a book I can share with you.
00:08:06Yeah, but you have the exclusive rights on fruits,
00:08:11papaya rules,
00:08:12so we need to come up with something better.
00:08:13But really, zero understanding and respect
00:08:17for people who come up with these things.
00:08:21They should, rather than watching Formula One,
00:08:22they should do Teletubbies,
00:08:24or, I don't know, some Mickey Mouses.
00:08:28Yeah, say it to Toto's face.
00:08:30He terminates keyboard warriors.
00:08:32But strong stuff.
00:08:34But there has been a lot of that, hasn't there?
00:08:35You do get...
00:08:36It's like everything in this sport.
00:08:37You get the conspiracy theorists.
00:08:39You get those that are saying,
00:08:41you know, they just switched George's engine off
00:08:43last week because they want Kimmy to be the...
00:08:45Because it's a better PR story.
00:08:47It doesn't happen like that, does it?
00:08:49I just wonder if Mickey Mouse is going to take offense
00:08:51to Toto.
00:08:52But what about the Teletubbies or Mickey Mouse as well?
00:08:55Teletubbies and Mickey Mouse, you mentioned.
00:08:56No, but I think it is, you know,
00:08:58obviously with fandom,
00:09:00people support their athletes to the T.
00:09:02And when they see something going on
00:09:03that they don't think is 100%, you know, straight,
00:09:07they just assume that the T are favoriting
00:09:09one driver over the other.
00:09:10But these are the, like,
00:09:11they're incredibly professional organizations.
00:09:13They put so much money, so much effort into this.
00:09:16There's thousands of people
00:09:17working towards the results of both of these drivers
00:09:20that I think it's silly to imagine
00:09:22that the team would actively sabotage one of their own.
00:09:25They are a team, after all, aren't they?
00:09:27Yeah, exactly.
00:09:27And let's not forget,
00:09:28the best marketing for an OEM
00:09:30is to have two cars finish.
00:09:32100%.
00:09:32At the front of the field.
00:09:34Has it got more toxic since your day?
00:09:36Yes.
00:09:37Because there's a lot more interest in the sport.
00:09:39And a lot more interest in the sport, yeah.
00:09:41I do love George's jackets.
00:09:42Keep them cool, by the way.
00:09:44It kind of looks like a tennis hobby.
00:09:47He does, he really does.
00:09:48Max, right, let's talk about Max.
00:09:50Max Verstappen.
00:09:52I just talked to Lauren McKees.
00:09:54He whizzed past,
00:09:55but when you see those,
00:09:56caution, do not enter.
00:09:58Always looks like it's electrical.
00:09:59He confirmed it's an ERS issue.
00:10:01I mean, obviously, we don't know what it is,
00:10:02but when you've got something like that,
00:10:04these mechanics are extremely careful
00:10:07and they bring in the, yeah,
00:10:09those that know that system best, don't they?
00:10:11Because it's extremely technical
00:10:13and they have specialists within that field
00:10:15on that part of the car.
00:10:17Yeah, it looks like it's actually got a green light
00:10:18on top of the car, doesn't it?
00:10:20Which is a good thing.
00:10:22Yeah, safe to touch,
00:10:23which obviously they are touching,
00:10:24but they do have gloves on.
00:10:26But, yeah, it's not that far away
00:10:29from the start of qualifying,
00:10:30sprint qualifying, isn't it?
00:10:30So they've got to get a move on.
00:10:32Quick one on Red Bull.
00:10:34As we were saying,
00:10:35there's a few people we talk about,
00:10:37I mean, Mercedes talk about it,
00:10:38when they're trying to assess this latest upgrade.
00:10:42They don't have enough of a data set yet
00:10:43to understand whether actually it's going to work
00:10:45or whether it's just specific
00:10:46to these kind of temperatures
00:10:48that we get in the tropics
00:10:49and the kind of tracks that we've had.
00:10:53But for Max,
00:10:54I think the evidence that they've kind of
00:10:56steady improvement towards the pace of Mercedes,
00:11:00it's definitely been on the right trajectory,
00:11:01hasn't it, since the summer break?
00:11:03Totally.
00:11:03And we know that the engine on their side,
00:11:05the power unit,
00:11:06is definitely not a concern.
00:11:07Well, I should say the engine
00:11:09because the ADO only refers to the engine.
00:11:12But they're obviously quick in the straight lines.
00:11:13That's not the concern.
00:11:14But the car seems to really have closed up
00:11:16a gap of around 7 tenths over the season.
00:11:18So they're putting really good upgrades on that car.
00:11:21We know that, you know,
00:11:22last year was a good example of it as well.
00:11:24Red Bull didn't start on the strong foot,
00:11:26but towards the end of the season,
00:11:27they managed to turn the situation around.
00:11:29So they obviously have great correlation.
00:11:31They do great track side analysis
00:11:33and then overnight bring changes to the car
00:11:35that helps them go forward.
00:11:36So that is working for them
00:11:38and at least it's going in the right direction.
00:11:40Yeah, and not working for Mercedes, it seems.
00:11:42You know, they've come here
00:11:43and they're running two different aero packages
00:11:44on the cars
00:11:45because the correlation isn't there.
00:11:48And that can spiral very quickly
00:11:49if you can't get that sorted quickly.
00:11:52Yeah.
00:11:52Long and short of that
00:11:53is it seems like it's much more stable car.
00:11:55George Russell seems running the old spec,
00:11:57the new spec.
00:11:57As yet, they just can't get the setup right
00:11:59on that.
00:12:00G-Dawg is very popular out here.
00:12:02We quite often see that
00:12:04when we come out to the far east.
00:12:08And we will have more
00:12:09as we build towards sprint qualifying.
00:12:21Welcome back.
00:12:22Fast approaching sprint qualifying
00:12:24here in Singapore.
00:12:261.32.274 for George Russell
00:12:29in the only hour of practice.
00:12:31A couple of tenths ahead of Charlotte.
00:12:33Let's go to the sky pad.
00:12:34Karun is there
00:12:35to have a look around that lap.
00:12:38George Russell was on pole position last year.
00:12:40Fastest, of course,
00:12:41in the only free practice
00:12:42of this weekend.
00:12:44He will start at the back of the grid
00:12:45for the Grand Prix,
00:12:46but for the sprint,
00:12:47he can start at the front
00:12:48if he does this again.
00:12:49Didn't use much curve
00:12:51at the apex of turn one
00:12:53and got a brilliant line
00:12:54through turns two and three as well.
00:12:57Slight dip in the road
00:12:58before you go uphill
00:12:59slightly for five.
00:13:01Just look at his track usage
00:13:03as he comes through.
00:13:04He starts to put the power down here.
00:13:05Watch his hands.
00:13:06Now starts to get a bit of oversteer.
00:13:08That takes him really close to the wall,
00:13:10but he got away with it.
00:13:12Brilliant, brilliant commitment there
00:13:14from George through turn five.
00:13:16It's quite bumpy
00:13:17as you go up Raffles Boulevard
00:13:19and get on the brakes
00:13:20for turn seven.
00:13:21You've got to be careful
00:13:22on this exit curb.
00:13:23If you run too much of that,
00:13:25you can get the bottom of the car beached,
00:13:27and that could cost you time.
00:13:29Turn eight is a very slow right-hander here.
00:13:32And then turn nine,
00:13:33a 90-degree left,
00:13:34a little bit quicker
00:13:35than turn eight
00:13:35as it opens up
00:13:36and you launch yourself
00:13:37past the Singapore Cricket Club
00:13:40on the left.
00:13:40Now last year,
00:13:41this wall on the right
00:13:42had been slightly offset.
00:13:45I'll go back and show you there
00:13:46where the orange bit is.
00:13:48George actually hit that wall,
00:13:49if you remember back in 2023,
00:13:52and that cost him a podium.
00:13:54This year,
00:13:55the wall's been modified
00:13:55and it gives drivers
00:13:57a better line of sight
00:13:58for the apex of them.
00:14:00Through the chicane,
00:14:01it's really busy.
00:14:02Watch his hands here
00:14:02one way,
00:14:03then the other,
00:14:03and it's really important
00:14:05not to get any locking.
00:14:06Lots of drivers struggling
00:14:07in free practice there
00:14:09into turn 13
00:14:10at the end of the Anderson Bridge.
00:14:12As we come out
00:14:13of the second sector of the lap,
00:14:15you've got 14,
00:14:15a tight right-hander here,
00:14:17just 60 mile an hour
00:14:19at the apex.
00:14:20And now you build
00:14:21a lot of speed
00:14:22as the drivers get
00:14:23up to the 16, 17 chicane.
00:14:25Over 300 kilometers an hour,
00:14:27nearly 200 miles an hour,
00:14:28but you jump on the brakes
00:14:29for this really tricky chicane.
00:14:32The last corner
00:14:32is all of a high-speed commitment,
00:14:34and this is where, actually,
00:14:35George was exceptional
00:14:36in free practice
00:14:38earlier today.
00:14:39In fact,
00:14:40Lando Norris
00:14:40was probably quicker than him
00:14:41all the way around the lap
00:14:42until that final corner.
00:14:44But George has got
00:14:45something special there.
00:14:47If he can repeat that
00:14:47when we get to sprint qualifying,
00:14:48he will be in great shape.
00:14:50Back to you.
00:14:52Yeah, they do roughly reckon
00:14:54that they're similar,
00:14:56just one's more unstable
00:14:57than the other.
00:14:57When they've done
00:14:58the comparisons,
00:14:58Mercedes,
00:14:59between George Russell
00:15:00and Kimi Antonelli here,
00:15:02let's just move on
00:15:03to the Ferrari.
00:15:05Charles Leclerc
00:15:05was a couple of tenths off,
00:15:06Lewis Hamilton
00:15:06around about half a second.
00:15:09Both those,
00:15:09the top five,
00:15:10basically,
00:15:10went out on the
00:15:13softs, didn't they?
00:15:14And then the rest
00:15:14were on the mediums,
00:15:15really.
00:15:15So it depends.
00:15:17The first two parts
00:15:18of sprint qualifier
00:15:19operated on mediums.
00:15:20On mediums, exactly.
00:15:21And as Jensen
00:15:22was pointing out earlier,
00:15:23once you've had
00:15:24the best grip out there
00:15:25and you kind of
00:15:26have to go backwards,
00:15:27it's almost more unsettling
00:15:28than putting on more grip
00:15:29and being able to push
00:15:30further to the limit.
00:15:31So it's going to be interesting
00:15:32to see if that impacts them now.
00:15:34But, yeah, look,
00:15:35the gap there,
00:15:36obviously,
00:15:36between the mediums
00:15:37and the softs
00:15:38looked like it was worth
00:15:38between seven tenths
00:15:40to a second.
00:15:40So it's quite a big gap
00:15:42between the two compounds.
00:15:44So it will be interesting
00:15:45to see also how much
00:15:46that impacts the drivers
00:15:46who make it to SQ3
00:15:48after running the mediums
00:15:49if they can, you know,
00:15:50adapt their driving quickly
00:15:51between those two sessions.
00:15:53That was Lewis just going past.
00:15:54It's getting busier and busier
00:15:55every year this past year.
00:15:55It's so busy.
00:15:56I mean, it's amazing.
00:15:57But also the reaction they get.
00:15:58It's like film stars,
00:16:00rock stars now, isn't it?
00:16:01Yeah, with regards to Lewis,
00:16:03his form compared to,
00:16:05what did he make
00:16:06of his drive in Sepang?
00:16:08I mean, great.
00:16:09From where he was?
00:16:10Yeah, great.
00:16:11I mean, the mistake, obviously,
00:16:13to have put him on that tyre
00:16:15to start with.
00:16:16And as Martin said before,
00:16:18you know, he made the best out of it.
00:16:20He came back and got a podium.
00:16:22Obviously, it was helped
00:16:23by the safety car,
00:16:23but his pace was really good
00:16:25in those tricky conditions
00:16:26on the drives.
00:16:27So, yeah,
00:16:28I think he's been on it all year
00:16:30and it's really, really good
00:16:31to see his confidence in the car,
00:16:33confidence in himself.
00:16:34And he seems like he's been
00:16:36the better of the two,
00:16:38hasn't he, this year?
00:16:38He likes the car on the softs,
00:16:40doesn't he?
00:16:40It's the same in Baku.
00:16:41He's very fast on the softs
00:16:42and it was the same
00:16:43when we came to Sepang.
00:16:45Able to extend it,
00:16:46able to whisper on those tyres.
00:16:48Okay, let's go to Ted.
00:16:50What can you tell us, Ted,
00:16:51with not long to go
00:16:52until sprint qualifying?
00:16:53Oh, Simon,
00:16:54you are not going to believe
00:16:55what's going on at Mercedes.
00:16:56So, just to recap,
00:16:57brand new aero spec
00:16:58on Kimi Antonelli's car,
00:17:00old spec on Russell's car,
00:17:02but they've already found out
00:17:03that the new front wing
00:17:04doesn't work.
00:17:05They've gone back
00:17:06to the old front wing
00:17:07on Kimi Antonelli's car.
00:17:09So, I don't know
00:17:10what's next with Mercedes.
00:17:11I mean, there's a show car
00:17:12in the fan zone.
00:17:13You can take a front wing
00:17:13off that, put it on the car.
00:17:14They seem to be lost
00:17:15on exactly what's working
00:17:17and what is not
00:17:18on these two Mercedes.
00:17:19So, it's the same front wing
00:17:21on Russell's car as Antonelli,
00:17:23but the rest of Antonelli's car
00:17:24has the new aero bits.
00:17:25They're trying to understand
00:17:26which bits work
00:17:27and which bits don't.
00:17:29Right, what about McLaren?
00:17:30Where are they?
00:17:30Well, they're there or thereabouts.
00:17:32Third and fifth
00:17:32in the first practice session.
00:17:34They need a big result
00:17:35because they risk being overtaken
00:17:37by Red Bull Racing
00:17:38in the Constructors' Championship.
00:17:40What about Red Bull Racing?
00:17:41Well, just to follow up
00:17:42on that change
00:17:42on the battery side,
00:17:44on the energy recovery system,
00:17:45that's all done,
00:17:46but they seem to be unable
00:17:48to engineer a car
00:17:49that's to Max Verstappen's liking
00:17:50straight out of the box.
00:17:51He said early on
00:17:53the brakes
00:17:54and the downshifts
00:17:56are so bad.
00:17:57did Max Verstappen.
00:17:58So they've been working feverishly
00:17:59to try and fix that.
00:18:01And just a quick line
00:18:02finally on Ferrari.
00:18:03They are ready to go there.
00:18:05They're aiming
00:18:05for a front row sprint qualifying.
00:18:07Not sure if they can do it.
00:18:08And Nika Hülkenberg's gearbox
00:18:10is just about finished.
00:18:11He conked out,
00:18:12didn't do the last runs
00:18:12in first practice
00:18:14because of that broken gearbox.
00:18:15Just been down to Audi.
00:18:16The job is more or less done.
00:18:17So plenty to look forward to
00:18:19in sprint qualifying one.
00:18:21Hülkenberg's car
00:18:21should be fit and ready.
00:18:23And which Mercedes, Simon,
00:18:25are we really going to see?
00:18:26Looking forward to it though.
00:18:28Yeah, as are we.
00:18:29I mean, down a cul-de-sac.
00:18:30Not seeing Mercedes
00:18:31down too many cul-de-sacs,
00:18:33have we this year?
00:18:34No, we haven't.
00:18:35But yeah,
00:18:36they understand
00:18:36which wing's working
00:18:37and which isn't.
00:18:38So they understand it,
00:18:39the car now.
00:18:39It's just taking them
00:18:4060 minutes to find them.
00:18:41Yeah.
00:18:42OK.
00:18:43In terms of the others
00:18:44out there,
00:18:45I mean,
00:18:45we'll think about
00:18:46some of those other teams
00:18:47that might be able,
00:18:48perhaps not in the sprint,
00:18:50but when we get further
00:18:51into the weekend,
00:18:52it's not as power hungry
00:18:53as other circuits.
00:18:54So those a bit further down
00:18:55like Aston Martin
00:18:56think, you know what,
00:18:57if we get the right conditions,
00:18:58perhaps, you know,
00:18:59we could be challenging
00:19:00for points again.
00:19:01You could.
00:19:02And this is obviously
00:19:02a circuit where track position
00:19:03matters a lot.
00:19:04So this session's going to matter.
00:19:06Tomorrow evening's
00:19:07qualifying session's
00:19:08going to matter.
00:19:08And so it's also
00:19:09about driver confidence though.
00:19:11It's a circuit that requires
00:19:12you to be happy
00:19:13with what your car's doing
00:19:14regardless of what it does
00:19:15in the straight line speed.
00:19:16You need to be able to push
00:19:17to know what your car's
00:19:18going to do.
00:19:19And so very much
00:19:20the downforce counts
00:19:21as well here.
00:19:22Let's face it,
00:19:23we didn't learn too much
00:19:24from that hour of practice.
00:19:25So where's,
00:19:26what's pole?
00:19:26Who's pole?
00:19:27I mean, George,
00:19:27well, obviously,
00:19:28but who are you predicting
00:19:29for sprint pole,
00:19:31please, today?
00:19:32Not Norris.
00:19:33Really?
00:19:33Yeah.
00:19:34I'm going to go George.
00:19:35OK.
00:19:36He put it on pole
00:19:37in battery with his package.
00:19:38Who's your money
00:19:39on at home?
00:19:41If indeed you've
00:19:42Bernie on,
00:19:43let's see.
00:19:44We'll get to understand,
00:19:45won't we?
00:19:45A little bit more
00:19:46about where the Mercedes are.
00:19:48He's a catcher
00:19:48was 1.4 seconds off,
00:19:50but he was out
00:19:51on the mediums
00:19:52in that one hour
00:19:53of practice.
00:19:54He's been closer
00:19:55than any of Max Verstappen's
00:19:56teammates
00:19:56in recent seasons,
00:19:58but all the big guns
00:19:59are out
00:20:00hoping to fire
00:20:01and take pole
00:20:02at the first ever
00:20:04sprint qualifying
00:20:04here in Singapore.

00:29:22Yeah
00:29:25That's in quite a critical place
00:29:27So a big lock up there, then
00:29:30And you've got so much leverage on that front wing
00:29:33They're so wide that all it needs is a little touch
00:29:37He could have done put some more 3Mstock
00:29:39Sticky stuff on that couldn't he?
00:29:41This is trying to make a bid for freedom
00:29:44It is
00:29:45Yellow flag on a track hazard
00:29:47That could be the debris that has been left round about turn seven and eight by Sergio Perez.
00:29:55The front wing running under the car.
00:29:58Is that driving the car in an unsafe condition?
00:30:00You are obliged to stop as soon as you can, if that is.
00:30:05And if you have left a bit of debris.
00:30:06And we have got a red flag.
00:30:08Now this, this does put a very interesting slant on this qualifying session.
00:30:14Because there's the debris that needs collecting.
00:30:17Lando Norris, Max Verstappen, Isaac Hadjar and Liam Lawson.
00:30:22Oli Behrman, Arvid Lindblad and Esteban Ocon haven't set a time at all.
00:30:26Of those that have, from Charles Leclerc downwards, they're all in the 150s or in the two minutes.
00:30:32So we've got time for a few more laps.
00:30:35But that, that is not a straightforward qualifying session now.
00:30:40Because of this incident with Sergio Perez.
00:30:42And anybody that, when you're out with a double yellow to prevent people trying to sort of give it a
00:30:49go to finish the lap, your lap time is deleted anyway.
00:30:52So that's what's happened to Piastri and Bottas so far.
00:30:57It's, it's automatic.
00:30:59Right.
00:30:59And the red flag, obviously, absolutely automatically finishes your, your lap.
00:31:04So, um, they had to red flag it.
00:31:06Because there's some quite big pieces, you know, on the racing line.
00:31:10You don't want those pieces coming back towards other drivers or flicking up towards marshal posts or, or spectator areas.
00:31:19So here's Sergio Perez that he has managed to limp back to the pits.
00:31:22Whether there's, there's a lot of damage on the floor.
00:31:26They'll only find out when the car gets jacked up.
00:31:29And they can retrieve that front wing from underneath.
00:31:33That's how dusty it is at the pit lane.
00:31:35As he comes in, Ted, you can see the dust, even as he applies the brakes at what is a
00:31:40relatively slow speed.
00:31:41Well, Crofty, you can see under the car, it's like he's holding a sparkler at fireworks night.
00:31:46The front, the front left of the floor is completely machining, grinding itself down the pit lane.
00:31:52Sparks flying off it.
00:31:53So that car is going to be very, very significantly damaged.
00:31:57Not that Cadillac were looking at SQ2 much anyway.
00:32:00But, yeah, well, Sergio Perez doing what Lewis Hamilton tried to do in Madrid, wasn't it?
00:32:06Going back with a, with a, with a stricken car.
00:32:08Yeah.
00:32:09But he made it.
00:32:10We don't know if race control issued the instructions to stop.
00:32:14In the case of Lewis Hamilton, when race control did say, you're going to have to tell him to stop
00:32:20now, Lewis did.
00:32:21And that's why he wasn't investigated by the stewards or noted by race control at the time.
00:32:28But the time, Martin, is six minutes and nine seconds to go.
00:32:31We're halfway through this qualifying.
00:32:34And, what, eight drivers haven't got a time on the board.
00:32:38And, well, there's a lot more than that.
00:32:40Haven't got a representative time on the board.
00:32:42You can add another three, six, nine, ten to that.
00:32:46They don't have a representative time.
00:32:48So, uh, kind of emergency stations, isn't it?
00:32:53You'll be...
00:32:54Accepted at me on the other flag.
00:32:57That's good.
00:32:59Well, that's interesting.
00:33:00That's right in the zone where the debris was.
00:33:04I let, I let things buy again.
00:33:05Because it was literally, judge the yellow.
00:33:08I think I passed it before the yellow, but I just want to be safe.
00:33:11Yep.
00:33:12That's right.
00:33:13Okay.
00:33:14So, that's as much for us as it is for the stewards and for race control.
00:33:18If Max did let Lewis past, then, as you were, in terms of where they are on the track,
00:33:26but overtaking under a yellow isn't allowed.
00:33:29Absolutely, yeah.
00:33:30And you can get some grid drops for that sort of thing.
00:33:34It's a very serious matter.
00:33:35The yellow flags are to protect the marshals to protect other people out on the track.
00:33:41Double-waved yellows are very serious.
00:33:44And pay a lot of attention to those.
00:33:46Obviously, not quite as serious as the red flag.
00:33:49Yeah, Lewis was slowing down because of the yellow flag,
00:33:52which is what you're obliged to do.
00:33:54Double yellow.
00:33:55Slow down and prepare to stop.
00:33:57So, the pit exit is closed.
00:33:59The track is now clear, and we'll get a resumption time in a moment.
00:34:03And I would imagine as soon as there is a time for this session to resume,
00:34:07then the cars will want to leave the pits as soon as they possibly can.
00:34:12Lewis Hamilton with the fastest time so far, a 1.337.
00:34:16But if you're new to qualifying and then to sprint qualifying,
00:34:19it's the bottom six at this stage that we're interested in.
00:34:22If you're in the top 16, you will go through to the next part of qualifying.
00:34:27The bottom six, put the feet up and go for an early ice bath.
00:34:30Yeah, the track's going to be busy.
00:34:31The chances of more reds or yellows are quite high, or your driver making a mistake.
00:34:37So, the stakes are very high now for the sprint qualifying.
00:34:42That incident with Max Verstappen has been noted by race control.
00:34:47So, the stewards will have a little look at that and then decide whether they need to investigate any further.
00:34:54So, the yellow flags and lights, which mean the same thing, they dominate the story,
00:35:00but they also get a light on their steering wheel to tell them they're in a yellow zone.
00:35:06It's just one of those moments, Max immediately knew that he shouldn't have done it,
00:35:11which is why he then said he was going to let Lewis past.
00:35:15Lewis making sure that everyone knew what had happened, as any driver would do.
00:35:20I mean, looking out of these things, through the halo, past the mirrors, looking at the walls, driving the car,
00:35:28it's not that easy to be just keeping an eye on flags.
00:35:33Sometimes you see somebody in the crowd with a red umbrella or something like that,
00:35:37or something else going on, or a flag that can catch your attention.
00:35:43They get used to it, they know roughly where the flags are,
00:35:46but honestly, it's not that easy to just drive flat out around a walled circuit
00:35:51and keep an eye out for any and every flag.
00:35:55But, rules is rules.
00:35:57Rules is rules.
00:35:58Right, Ted Kravitz, I am feeling very bad for Sergio Perez,
00:36:03and the fact that I said I thought he'd have a good qualifying tonight,
00:36:07and I feel that I've put the mockers on him a little bit with the blessed commentator's curse.
00:36:11So, tell me, what are they doing at Cadillac?
00:36:13Can he get out there again?
00:36:15They're fixing his car, and yes, he can.
00:36:17We haven't had a good definitive commentator's curse for a while, have we, Crofty?
00:36:21Not in Formula One, but in the world of rally they did.
00:36:24Oh, yes, they did, didn't they?
00:36:25Last week.
00:36:25Yes, congratulations, we should say, to Elf and Evans for the coming.
00:36:28Wales' latest world rally champion.
00:36:31Yes.
00:36:31Yes, excellent stuff.
00:36:32Right, interestingly enough, the 33-7 that Lewis Hamilton has done
00:36:37is more or less bang on the cut-off time as the cars just burst into life behind me
00:36:42as we have a resumption time.
00:36:44But I think everybody, yes, Leclerc's going again.
00:36:46Oh, the Audi's getting so close.
00:36:48That's really aggressive, trying to push in by the Audis,
00:36:51but they are at liberty to do it.
00:36:53Hamilton going again.
00:36:55All of them, of course, to reiterate, they have to go to the same set of tyres.
00:36:59You don't get an extra set of tyres if there is a red flag in sprint qualifying,
00:37:03so they're all out again.
00:37:04But Hamilton feeling that even he is not safe on a 33-7.
00:37:08And Sergio Perez at the head of the queue.
00:37:11So he is going out.
00:37:13Thanks, Ted.
00:37:13That was the Mercedes lighting up its rear tyres, George Russell.
00:37:18And Kimi Antonelli, because he had to wait a minute for his teammate,
00:37:21has now got a Ferrari in front of him as well.
00:37:25Resumption time in three minutes at 20.46 local time.
00:37:31And well done, young man, for bringing your rear defenders
00:37:33so you can enjoy the action and it isn't too loud trackside.
00:37:38Yeah, it's going to be like trying to get round Hyde Park corner, isn't it?
00:37:41Nobody's going to let you in.
00:37:44And if you can get your front wheel over that white line,
00:37:47you are effectively in the fast lane,
00:37:50which, of course, the Haas is nowhere near there.
00:37:52But everybody knows they need track position.
00:37:54They need some clear air.
00:37:55If there's going to be incidents, they need it to be behind them.
00:38:02And unsurprisingly, Sergio Perez noted for unsafe condition of driving the car.
00:38:08They would normally expect him to go and park that down a runoff somewhere
00:38:11rather than distribute the front wing.
00:38:14Are you offering to pay for the front wing, Crofty, as a commentator's curses?
00:38:18I think the front wing might even be out of our budget for the week, to be honest.
00:38:23It's about a quarter of a million quid.
00:38:25Yeah, I mean, that will get you a couple of Singapore slings
00:38:27at some of the best hotels around here.
00:38:29But I think that might just be...
00:38:32I might need you to lend me a couple of quid for that one, if that's all right.
00:38:37So noted, not under investigation.
00:38:39I'd like to hear what the team radio was saying on that,
00:38:42and I'm sure that's what race control of the stewards will be wondering.
00:38:47Did the team tell him to park it?
00:38:49Did he offer to park it?
00:38:50Did the team tell him to bring it home?
00:38:52You know, what was the communication going on?
00:38:55But in a qualifying session, whatever you're driving,
00:38:58you're hardwired as a driver to get it back to the pits.
00:39:01It's a bit embarrassing when you bring it back to the pits with bits hanging off it.
00:39:05But hey-ho.
00:39:06That is the Audi, by the way.
00:39:09A new colour scheme for this weekend, for Nico Hülkenberg and for Gabriel Portoletto.
00:39:15And that is Kimi Antonelli, 20 years of age, and like everyone else here,
00:39:18a little bit of sweat appearing on his face.
00:39:23No further investigation for driving the car in an unsafe condition.
00:39:28Sergio Perez.
00:39:29That was quick.
00:39:34That's what we'd like to see.
00:39:35Quick decisions that have been made.
00:39:43So, qualifying to restart in 30 seconds.
00:39:50And everyone with a good vantage point on the rooftops in the hospitality suites,
00:39:56looking to get the best shot of the night.
00:40:00Andrea Stella on the McLaren pit wall.
00:40:03Lando Norris has been having issues with his fuel system for the last couple of races.
00:40:09McLaren think they've found the fix.
00:40:11And they will only know if it's a 100% guarantee with more running on the track.
00:40:16But they were very encouraged by what happened in the first practice session.
00:40:20Right.
00:40:21Green light.
00:40:21Here we go again then.
00:40:23So, what have we got?
00:40:24Six minutes to go.
00:40:26So, round about 1.50, 1.55 for those at the front to get to the line.
00:40:33They might get, Martin, two, three laps in.
00:40:37Those at the back of this queue might only get a couple of laps in,
00:40:42in terms of fast laps, to try and get themselves through into SQ2.
00:40:47So, the pressure really is on the drivers here,
00:40:49because, of course, they have to get to the line before the chequered flag to start a flying lap.
00:40:53Not least because it's a difficult circuit to overtake on.
00:40:57So, grid slot is everything here, like in Monaco.
00:41:01Max Verstappen will be investigated after the session for a yellow flag infringement.
00:41:06We saw that he overtook Lewis Hamilton down at Turn 7,
00:41:10where the yellow flags were because there was debris on the track.
00:41:13And they're going to look at that, the FIA stewards, after the session,
00:41:16which means they want to speak to the driver, probably to both drivers.
00:41:19I would imagine they'll get summoned to go and have a look.
00:41:23And still in the garage, then, Max Verstappen and Isaac Hadjar.
00:41:26Red Bull kind of waiting for the queue to get onto the track before they come out.
00:41:31Yeah, that's high risk if somebody has a shunt or an issue of any description.
00:41:38And the same going on, then, with Fernando Alonso at Aston Martin.
00:41:42They're waiting for, yeah, they're waiting for a gap in this circuit.
00:41:48There's not going to be too many of those.
00:41:50Fernando Alonso has got into the second part of a sprint qualifying.
00:41:53It was Canada this year.
00:41:55He crashed in SQ1, but his time was good enough to make it through.
00:41:58He, along with his teammate Lance Stroll, does have a representative time on the board.
00:42:041.34.9 for Fernando Alonso, 1.35.7 for Lance Stroll.
00:42:08They're both in the top five currently, as Charles Leclerc then makes his way towards the line.
00:42:14Charles Leclerc without really a representative time so far.
00:42:18At the start of the lap, take us through it, please, Martin Brundle.
00:42:21I will, if I can see him.
00:42:23There he is, going under the flyovers.
00:42:261, 2 and 3 come up very quickly.
00:42:28You run to the outside of 3.
00:42:31Sweep through 4, absolutely flat out.
00:42:33And they come very, very close to the wall to open up turn 5 here.
00:42:37And close to the wall through the exit.
00:42:39An important exit, because you've got a long straight ahead.
00:42:43Sweeping through what is absolutely easy, flat out right-hander.
00:42:47Right-hand side, heavy braking off the brakes.
00:42:50Use the curb on the exit to arrest any slide.
00:42:53Bring it immediately to your left as the driver to open up this corner.
00:42:57A short straight.
00:42:59And you've just got block changes, like an American street circuit in many respects.
00:43:0290 left, 90 degree right.
00:43:05And a long run down the back straight.
00:43:07But it's a little bit of a right-hand kink into that braking zone.
00:43:10That's what caught George Russell out a couple of years back.
00:43:13And then over the Anderson Bridge.
00:43:15Pretty slippery through there.
00:43:17Heavy braking.
00:43:19Get the nose in.
00:43:20Bit of understeer from the Ferrari there.
00:43:21Tail wags.
00:43:22Slightly complaining about the power demand.
00:43:25As you ease it.
00:43:26And it's downhill braking here.
00:43:28You've got to be really careful you don't get in there too deep.
00:43:31Again, you can use the curb to an extent.
00:43:34Now it's a really high-speed zone before you get to a small chicane where you can tip the nose
00:43:41in.
00:43:41You've got to hit the first apex.
00:43:43Mind the wall through the exit right there.
00:43:46He gave that plenty of width.
00:43:49Absolutely flat out through the last two corners into the pit straight.
00:43:53And it's a 34-0.
00:43:55Still a quarter of a second shy.
00:43:57Three-tenths shy on Lewis Hamilton.
00:43:59Russell a 34-3.
00:44:01These feel like banker laps to me.
00:44:03Yeah, just get one in the bank.
00:44:06Go around on a cool-down lap.
00:44:07And then try a bit faster knowing that you're a little bit safer.
00:44:10Hamilton goes fastest overall.
00:44:11Three-tenths clear of his teammate Charles Leclerc.
00:44:14There is Lewis Hamilton on his next lap.
00:44:17Gabriel Bortoletto moves up into the top ten.
00:44:20There are personal bests, unsurprisingly, being set by drivers out there.
00:44:25And they are all out there.
00:44:26All 22 drivers trying to make it through to the second part of qualifying.
00:44:31Lewis Hamilton going even faster on this latest lap in the middle sector.
00:44:35And 1.33.7 is the quickest time of the session.
00:44:39As Lindblad now moves up out of the bottom placings into 13th.
00:44:44But that was a mere warm-up lap, really, for Arvid Lindblad.
00:44:47He has got one lap and one lap only to try and get into Q2.
00:44:52As we watch here the McLaren of Lando Norris.
00:44:55Of course, those that have completed a fast lap or a banker lap
00:44:58have now got to spend the next lap recharging their battery
00:45:01and cooling everything down, ready for a final charge at the end of the session.
00:45:06So, Lando Norris goes third fastest.
00:45:09And now there's a bit of traffic here.
00:45:11Oscar Piastri ahead of Gasly.
00:45:13Max Verstappen ahead of Ocon.
00:45:15These are all on outlaps.
00:45:17And they're just kind of waiting to get themselves into a queue.
00:45:21But they need to get to the line, which they should do.
00:45:23There's plenty of time there.
00:45:25But this is going to be one lap and one lap only for Max Verstappen
00:45:28and for Isaac Hadjar and really for Oscar Piastri,
00:45:32who's got a 150.1 to his name.
00:45:34The bottom six, Ocon and Hadjar and Verstappen, who we just saw on track.
00:45:39Sainz Lawson and Lindblad, who is 27.9 for the first sector,
00:45:44which is pretty good and compares well with drivers in the top ten.
00:45:49Piastri then down the raffles.
00:45:51Boulevard, he comes.
00:45:52Fastest part of the track.
00:45:53Accelerating to around about 190 miles an hour
00:45:57when he gets there towards turn seven.
00:46:00This is big pressure.
00:46:02You can't tighten up.
00:46:03You can't go easy on the braking zones.
00:46:05But you can't make a mistake either.
00:46:07Absolutely.
00:46:08I so admire the drivers when they ace this moment under pressure
00:46:13when every metre counts of braking, getting on the throttle.
00:46:17Arvid Lindblad goes 10th fastest behind Fernando Alonso,
00:46:20who's still in the top nine.
00:46:22Ocon, ooh, that was close there for Oscar Piastri.
00:46:27Ocon with a decent first sector.
00:46:29Max Verstappen with a good first sector too.
00:46:32Liam Lawson moves up into eighth,
00:46:35just ahead of Oli Behrman, behind Pierre Gasly.
00:46:38Albon and Piastri, Sainz, Verstappen, Hadjar and Ocon
00:46:41now occupy the bottom six.
00:46:44There are personal bests being set in terms of sectors all over the track.
00:46:49Fastest middle sector is Max Verstappen.
00:46:52Checker flag is flying.
00:46:54Lewis Hamilton pits.
00:46:55Lando Norris pits.
00:46:56They should be safely through.
00:46:57Sainz, though, is out.
00:46:58Sainz crosses the line.
00:47:00Perez crosses the line.
00:47:02He's out.
00:47:03Piastri is fine.
00:47:04Goes through fourth fastest.
00:47:06Max Verstappen will be next to cross the line as Lando Norris pits.
00:47:11Here it comes, Max Verstappen.
00:47:14He had one lap.
00:47:15That's all he needed.
00:47:16He is quickest out there.
00:47:18Once again, showing he can handle the speed under pressure.
00:47:21Ocon moves out of the bottom six.
00:47:23Goes P13.
00:47:25Isaac Hadjar next crosses the line and goes fourth fastest.
00:47:29Lance Stroll was the first car to take the flag.
00:47:32Lance Stroll has been eliminated.
00:47:34Sergio Perez trying to get himself out of the bottom six.
00:47:41Just wondering where he is on track.
00:47:43There's George Russell.
00:47:45George Russell is down in seventh.
00:47:48Kimi Antonelli.
00:47:49Russell goes second fastest, to be honest.
00:47:53Antonelli ninth fastest.
00:47:55We have Bortoleto and Perez out on track, setting personal best currently
00:48:00to try and make their way out.
00:48:02Bortoleto is currently going around the final turn.
00:48:07As we look into the Ferrari garage, Bortoleto on track currently,
00:48:14according to our track map and our GPS tracker,
00:48:19and has gone through two sectors and now three sectors,
00:48:22but the timing hasn't updated.
00:48:25So I can't actually let you know whether he's out of qualifying,
00:48:29if he's made it or not.
00:48:30Limblad, Bortoleto and Alonso, the last three over the line before the chequered flag.
00:48:35So he has got a chance to get this done.
00:48:39Well, I think the timing screens went a little bit AWOL.
00:48:44Towards the end of that qualifying, officially eliminated drivers.
00:48:48Lance Stroll.
00:48:51I had, like, a lot of front-looking and no rear combined.
00:48:57Gabriel Bortoleto, Alex Halbon, Valtteri Bottas, Carlos Sainz
00:49:00and Sergio Perez were damaged to his car.
00:49:04Max Verstappen with the fastest time from George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.
00:49:08Well, it was a bit harem-scare-em, but Verstappen fastest in the end.
00:49:23Welcome back to Friday night here in Singapore.
00:49:26It's qualifying for the sprints here in Singapore, the first-ever sprint.
00:49:30And the start of SQ2 is going to be delayed.
00:49:33And I would imagine, while a few gremlins in the timing screens
00:49:37and the race timing, the qualifying timings, get fixed.
00:49:41We did think Gabriel Bortoleto was out on the track.
00:49:44We couldn't see him.
00:49:45He'd done a couple of personal best sectors.
00:49:48He has made it through to the second part of qualifying.
00:49:53These are the six cars that are out.
00:49:56Arvid Limblad, who was 17th fastest.
00:49:59Lance Stroll, who was 18th fastest.
00:50:02Alex Halbon, who was 19th fastest.
00:50:05Sergio Perez, who was 20th.
00:50:08Valtteri Bottas, who was 21st.
00:50:10So Perez wins the Cadillac head-to-head 4-2.
00:50:13And Carlos Sainz, who was slowest of all.
00:50:15Let's hear Alex Halbon's team radio at the end of that first part of qualifying.
00:50:24It's got a pretty different car, too.
00:50:26Practice.
00:50:27All right.
00:50:32Completely different car to practice.
00:50:35Let's go to the Red Bull pit wall.
00:50:37Lauren Meckis, their team principal.
00:50:40Well, Max Verstappen, by our reckoning, had one lap to get it done.
00:50:44And he got it done.
00:50:45He was the fastest.
00:50:47Yeah, it was a bit uncomfortable because, obviously,
00:50:50we were part of the car that got the yellow flag in the first push.
00:50:54So that's what it is.
00:50:55We only had one go at it.
00:50:57But both Max and Izak did a good job with it.
00:51:00Quite risky, though.
00:51:01Quite brave to – you could easily have had another yellow on that final lap.
00:51:07Yeah, you're right.
00:51:08You're absolutely right.
00:51:09That was part of the risk.
00:51:11But we prefer to go for the build and to give the guys a chance to fill the tires properly.
00:51:19But I agree with you.
00:51:20There was an extra risk that we decided to take.
00:51:23We won't ask you about the yellow flag infringement unless you want to talk about it, Lauren, of course,
00:51:28because you've got a case to build with the stewards.
00:51:31But do you know why SQ2 is going to be delayed?
00:51:33Is it the timing issues?
00:51:36There were a few things that were rather unusual on page three.
00:51:41There were the timing issues and there is a few overtaking, enabled, disabled messages.
00:51:45So I think there's a couple of things that the FIA is looking at.
00:51:49Do you know how long the delay is going to be?
00:51:51Have you been told any more?
00:51:52No, no, no, not yet.
00:51:53In which case, then, we'll try and find out from another source.
00:51:57Thank you, sir.
00:51:58Good luck for the second part of qualifying.
00:52:01Thank you.
00:52:02Nico Hülkenberg popped up in the fifth fastest at the end.
00:52:07So both out is comfortably through.
00:52:09And a weekend when they said, oh, the humidity is not going to help our engine at all.
00:52:13It looked fine there.
00:52:14Yeah, Hülkenberg was just in front of Bortoletto, actually.
00:52:17Another one of those drivers that was on a decent lap and then just vamooshed off our screen.
00:52:22So it worked out beautifully for him.
00:52:25And Gabi Bortoletto, as you say, for both Audis then.
00:52:28Making a difference there right at the moment and unseen on our data screens.
00:52:33But, Ted, what can you tell us?
00:52:35Well, Martin, I can see lots of engineers talking to each other
00:52:38and then looking at their computers here in the pit lane.
00:52:41I can see the Audi guys, the Alpine guys, Haas and Aston Martin as well.
00:52:45What we understand is that there is another glitch, another software glitch with the FIA systems.
00:52:54We think it came as a result of the red flag and the resetting.
00:52:59They had to reset some of the systems as a result of the red flag.
00:53:02And that didn't happen.
00:53:05I believe we've just got a missive now from the FIA.
00:53:08Do you want to read that out, Crofty?
00:53:10And then I'll add to that from what I'm hearing from the team.
00:53:13Yeah, the start of SQ2 delayed due to an issue with the timing systems.
00:53:17Some lap times have not been registered.
00:53:20So that's now resolved.
00:53:21And the current timings are considered correct.
00:53:24The FIA are now investigating whether we can proceed with the rest of the session.
00:53:30It's important, Ted, to get it absolutely right.
00:53:33Now, race control is right opposite the finish line.
00:53:37If they wanted, they could just get the stopwatch out,
00:53:41but they'd need 16 of them and 16 people to operate the stopwatch.
00:53:45And we could go back to the 1950s if we want.
00:53:48But I think it would be better if they resolved it and the timings actually worked.
00:53:51Yes, because that statement suggests that they may not be able to resume for the rest,
00:53:57proceed with the rest of the session.
00:53:58There are multiple backups.
00:54:00I mean, I've done features about this in the FIA timing screens,
00:54:04which are done in conjunction with Formula One management.
00:54:06Obviously, they run all the optical loops that go around,
00:54:09the fiber optic loops that go around the cable that measure the car's speed.
00:54:12They have an optical backup, which is essentially just a laser,
00:54:15timing everybody as they start and then finish their lap.
00:54:18So they could go back to that.
00:54:20And I believe that is connected eventually to the timing screens
00:54:22that you have in your commentary box.
00:54:24Whether it gets to be on the telly at the same time might be another thing.
00:54:28But yes, it seems as a result of that virtual safety car
00:54:30and then the red flag, there is another glitch.
00:54:34And that is what has led to this, well, to coin a Formula One phrase,
00:54:41suboptimal situation.
00:54:42Yeah, they've got the GPS trackers on the cars as well.
00:54:45But we had some issues earlier on today, didn't we,
00:54:48with driver tracker and onboard cameras.
00:54:50Do you remember when we first used to come here,
00:54:53when they went out of Turn 5, there was a train line or something.
00:54:57With the MRT, yes.
00:54:57Yes, a train line or something that was upsetting the cars
00:55:01and their gearboxes and all sorts of things.
00:55:02I think it was Mark Webber was the first to experience this.
00:55:06And when he went over the Underground Railway line, the MRT,
00:55:09for those that don't know Singapore very well,
00:55:11it was like the Underground, and he kind of not only lost communication,
00:55:16but all his transponder went a bit strange.
00:55:19Now, I think the cars now have a kind of a plate
00:55:23that protects where the transponders are
00:55:26and that sort of thing to stop any electrical interference from below.
00:55:32Not the sort of thing you get at Silverstone.
00:55:34They haven't put a tube line in there yet.
00:55:36I mean, it'd be nice, wouldn't it?
00:55:37To be fair, we'd all get to the track by train.
00:55:40It'd be lovely.
00:55:41But it does happen here in Singapore.
00:55:44We have no idea, I'm afraid,
00:55:46as to when we are going to get going once again.
00:55:49We will keep you posted as soon as we can.
00:55:51The transponders are a very specific position on the cars as well
00:55:58as to where they have to be.
00:56:00And that's, of course, then on your grid slots as well,
00:56:02where, you know, have you got any relative movement?
00:56:04Are you inside or outside of your grid slot?
00:56:07So it's all important, as Yuki Tsunoda looks on,
00:56:12having done a few races for the Racing Bulls
00:56:15and went very well while he was doing it.
00:56:17And I think it looks like he's listening to some music,
00:56:21doesn't it, rather than radio calls there.
00:56:23But, yeah, it must be purgatory
00:56:26when you want to be a Formula One driver
00:56:28and you've got to stand around all weekend
00:56:30leaving banana skins for the main two drivers
00:56:33around every corner.
00:56:34I'm not sure either of us can answer this question.
00:56:38But we'll give it a try.
00:56:41At 2052, the message...
00:56:45Sorry, 20...
00:56:45Yeah, 2052, the message Overtake Enabled
00:56:48flashed up on timing page 3.
00:56:51And Overtake gets you half a megajoule of extra energy
00:56:54that you can use during the course of a lap.
00:56:57I wonder, when that was enabled, by mistake,
00:57:01because there seemed to be a problem with the systems,
00:57:07did some cars get an extra half a megajoule of energy?
00:57:12Is that possible that it could happen?
00:57:15As a message that says Overtake Enabled has just flashed up again.
00:57:19Or is the maximum limit of nine megajoules,
00:57:23which is standard for qualifying,
00:57:26and for the race with Overtake,
00:57:28going to not be exceeded, if you know what I mean.
00:57:32What I'm trying to say is, did anyone get nine and a half megajoules?
00:57:36You'd imagine they're capped at the nine megajoules they're allowed through qualifying.
00:57:39It's only in the race, isn't it, that it's eight and a half and then nine for Overtake.
00:57:43But it's fiendishly complicated.
00:57:46This is a completely different problem to what we had last weekend in Sepang,
00:57:50but equally as embarrassing at Formula One level.
00:57:54So 11 minutes past the hour, we get started again.
00:57:58And so whatever they've done, again, the Control-Alt-Delete,
00:58:03and hopefully we'll get everybody registered as they're going round now.
00:58:09So we have got five minutes before the start then of SQ2.
00:58:16Ted Kravitz, down to you.
00:58:18It's all right.
00:58:19They've gone out to the local shop and they've got a new USB cable.
00:58:22We're all good.
00:58:23We're all good, probably.
00:58:24Thanks, Ted.
00:58:24We are all good.
00:58:25Right, just a quick word as the two Cadillac guys have just passed me.
00:58:30Arvid Lindblad has also passed me going up,
00:58:32and that is disappointing for Arvid, isn't it?
00:58:35Isn't he?
00:58:35It's disappointing for him.
00:58:37Alan Permain, his team boss, was just saying that the idea about,
00:58:41of course, this is Arvid's first visit in Formula One to the Singapore circuit,
00:58:45and the idea was just for him to play his way in gradually into this circuit.
00:58:50So I think, to be fair to Arvid, I think Racing Bulls told him,
00:58:54look, it's not so much of an issue if you get knocked out in SQ1.
00:58:58Just concentrate on building up your confidence,
00:59:00getting to know the car, to know the circuit,
00:59:02where the barriers are and where the concrete walls are.
00:59:05So I think they're expecting more from Arvid in Grand Prix qualifying,
00:59:09which hopefully won't be affected by some of these software glitches
00:59:13when it eventually comes on Saturday evening, Saturday afternoon.
00:59:17Thanks ever so much, Ted.
00:59:18And with Arvid Lindblad in mind, let's have a little listen to the young rookie now.
00:59:25Well, yeah, I think you miss out by less than a tenth, Arvid,
00:59:28ultimately condensed at the end of SQ1.
00:59:31And the traffic issues, or how was that final run for you?
00:59:36It was okay.
00:59:37I mean, obviously, it was not the, you know,
00:59:40it's probably the toughest situation for me.
00:59:41Obviously, coming here, it's a very challenging track,
00:59:43being a street circuit, only with one practice session
00:59:45in very different conditions that we have now,
00:59:48and qualifying in the night.
00:59:50And obviously, it being a sprint weekend, it was already harder.
00:59:53So then, you know, I just wanted to be able to do a couple laps in SQ1
00:59:55to be able to build myself into the session.
00:59:57Obviously, only having one lap was just made things a bit more difficult for me.
01:00:02The lap was okay.
01:00:03I don't know why.
01:00:03I had a bit of a moment in breaking of 13,
01:00:07where I lost quite a bit there, and, yeah, that was it.
01:00:09The rest of the lap was fine.
01:00:10So, yeah, if I hadn't done that, then I would have gone through.
01:00:13But I wouldn't really call it a mistake in the end.
01:00:15It was forced to push because of the situation.
01:00:19So, yeah, that's what it is.
01:00:19Yeah.
01:00:20Was there a clear pathway in terms of how to set the car up
01:00:23through practice, reduced time, as you say?
01:00:25Now, how might you use the sprint tomorrow
01:00:27to get a clearer picture for the rest of the weekend?
01:00:30I think for me, it's just to do a few more laps,
01:00:31get a bit more comfortable with the circuit.
01:00:32But obviously, it's a bit of a shame.
01:00:35You know, just honestly, just from a point of view
01:00:37of doing less laps on low fuel,
01:00:39because obviously the focus for me, I was never, you know,
01:00:44there wasn't a heavy amount of focus on the sprint.
01:00:46It was always more about qualifying,
01:00:47because we knew realistically that it was going to be hard to score points anyway.
01:00:50Even if we do a magical job, let's say,
01:00:53we need someone to break down in the top four teams to score a point.
01:00:56So it was always more about qualifying,
01:00:57and I just think just doing less laps on low fuel is just a bit of a shame,
01:01:01but it is what it is.
01:01:02Better day tomorrow.
01:01:02Thank you.
01:01:04Yeah, the good news for Arvid is this is sprint qualifying
01:01:06and not the main qualifying,
01:01:07as he eloquently pointed out there in the end.
01:01:12Right, a minute and 45 seconds to go.
01:01:16Let's keep our fingers crossed that the next part of qualifying
01:01:19is slightly more straightforward than the first,
01:01:23and that all the systems are now working,
01:01:26and that we don't get a red flag or a few yellow flags.
01:01:31And, oh dear, that blanket didn't want to come off.
01:01:34That already looked like things were delaying Kimi Antonelli a touch,
01:01:38but he gets out behind his teammates, George Russell.
01:01:42His blanket sometimes is not the easiest things
01:01:44to get off a Formula One tyre,
01:01:46and they're even worse to try and put on
01:01:48when the tyre gets hot and sticky.
01:01:51Ferrari are going to wait it out with Charles Leclerc,
01:01:54who is second fastest in that first session.
01:01:57Two Max Verstappen, George Russell,
01:02:00Lewis Hamilton and Nico Hülkenberg,
01:02:03the top five.
01:02:07Yeah, it's difficult to know the full ramifications
01:02:09of all of that, isn't it?
01:02:11Yeah.
01:02:11We know the six that...
01:02:12...
01:02:12...
01:02:12...
