00:02:34ДИНАМИЧНАЯ МУЗЫКА
00:03:12It wasn't that long ago that we said,
00:03:15what's going on at Hendrick Motorsports?
00:03:17What's going on at the 5?
00:03:18I feel like our team is well capable
00:03:20of putting together big days where we execute.
00:03:22I thought we'd have a good shot.
00:03:24I didn't think that we would have a max points type of day.
00:03:27There's no doubt in my mind that we could do it.
00:03:29Larson goes back to victory lane.
00:03:31I'll be there, boys.
00:03:33St. Louis, baby, hell yeah!
00:03:35I haven't doubted myself.
00:03:37I haven't doubted our team.
00:03:38Larson does it to win two of the opening four races of the chase.
00:03:42Again, great fight. Solid day.
00:03:44And he is in shape to defend his title.
00:03:51It has been an outstanding start to the chase for Kyle Larson.
00:03:54The 5 team with a perfect points day last weekend at Kansas.
00:03:58So, for you guys, how much room is there to grow in terms of the team's potential?
00:04:03Or was last week your peak?
00:04:05I don't know.
00:04:06I mean, I think track to track, it's always different.
00:04:08But I feel like we're obviously in a better spot than we were in the summer.
00:04:12So, yeah, I mean, we would love to continue to grow because there's still, I don't know,
00:04:16a month and a half of racing left.
00:04:17So, there's still room to improve.
00:04:19But I've just been really happy with our team, really.
00:04:22I mean, our cars have been the fast, or not the fastest, but fast.
00:04:25And our team has just been doing a really good job of executing great pit stops and all
00:04:30the things that go along with running up front.
00:04:32So, we put ourselves in a decent position so far.
00:04:36The Gibbs cars are going to be really, really strong today.
00:04:38So, it'll be tough.
00:04:39But just stay in the hunt, and you never know what can happen.
00:04:42And you've got a special paint scheme this weekend for hometown hero, the late great Kyle
00:04:47Bush.
00:04:47How do you hope fans feel when they see that paint scheme on track here today in Vegas?
00:04:52Yeah, well, I hope it just brings back a lot of good memories of Kyle Bush from early
00:04:57in his cup career.
00:04:58So, yeah, excited to have that scheme.
00:05:01It looks beautiful.
00:05:02It stands out better than anybody's car out there.
00:05:04So, would love nothing more than to get a win today and get to celebrate in his honor.
00:05:11So, yeah, we're going to try our best, and hopefully we can have a gritty performance
00:05:14like he would have.
00:05:14Good luck.
00:05:15Thank you.
00:05:15The reigning champ starts sixth here this afternoon at Las Vegas.
00:05:19Thank you, Kim.
00:05:20I'm not to be a prisoner of the moment of where the Cup Series is right now, but I'm
00:05:24not sure, Steve, where this train stops for the five team.
00:05:26You look at the calendar.
00:05:27There are no weaknesses when you look at the tracks coming up.
00:05:30And, by the way, the championship race is at one of his best tracks in Miami.
00:05:33Well, and shame on us for not seeing the train coming, perhaps.
00:05:36Without a doubt, the five was off at the beginning of the year.
00:05:38I think it was more a question of not if, but when would the five get turned around?
00:05:42DJ, no better time.
00:05:44Last week, definitely put some cold water on everyone's face, including mine.
00:05:49You cannot overlook Kyle Larson.
00:05:50Can't ever overlook.
00:05:51There's so much talent in this young man and his driving abilities, everything he can do.
00:05:55I think that the beginning of the year, Tyler Reddick's great start, what Denny Hamlin was
00:06:00able to pick up on then.
00:06:01We kind of forgot that Larson was still leading laps.
00:06:05He just wasn't getting the finishes.
00:06:06They had some problems on pit road.
00:06:08They had some mechanical issues.
00:06:09He made a mistake or two.
00:06:11Now they've gotten through all of that, and he is now the man to beat.
00:06:15Well, for years, Las Vegas has played a critical role in the Cup Series postseason, and today
00:06:20it could be a key turning point for a lot of race teams.
00:06:23Jeff Burton joins Steve next to explain what makes this mile and a half in the desert such
00:06:28a challenge.
00:06:30You're watching the USA Sports Pre-Race Show, presented by Sonic.
00:06:39USA Sports Pre-Racers, brought to you by Sonic, the $7 big deal meal.
00:06:44Live free.
00:06:45Eat Sonic.
00:06:47Well, let's bring in Steve and Jeff now and see what a chaotic practice session yesterday.
00:06:51We saw multiple teams have tire issues in that session.
00:06:55So put me in the crew chief mindset.
00:06:57What was going through your mind last night as you made decisions and changes for today's
00:07:01race?
00:07:01Well, not a lot of dreams, Marty, because it was a sleepless night for crew chiefs.
00:07:04This near record-breaking temperature out here in Las Vegas has asked these crew chiefs
00:07:08to find grip everywhere.
00:07:10One of the easiest places, but perhaps the most dangerous, the air pressure in the Goodyear
00:07:14tires.
00:07:14You take air pressure out, it adds mechanical grip.
00:07:17It also adds aerodynamic grip.
00:07:18But when you go too far, failure can happen.
00:07:22Just yesterday, we saw the 45 of Tyler Reddick.
00:07:24He caught his, the 54 of Ty Gibbs.
00:07:26Also a flat left side tire, but no damage.
00:07:28Not so lucky for the Fords.
00:07:30A huge bit, huge hit for Josh Berry in the 21.
00:07:34The four of Noah Gregson also goes around.
00:07:36What makes it so difficult here in Las Vegas isn't just the speed and the vertical load,
00:07:41but my booth mate Jeff Burton is down in turns one and two.
00:07:44Jeff, the bumps, the severe content, the bumps in one and two adds to the challenge.
00:07:49I am in the middle of them, and you can see the gouge marks in this racetrack as the
00:07:53cars roll right through here.
00:07:55It just digs into the racetrack, and that puts a tremendous amount of pressure on those
00:07:59tires, especially on low air pressure.
00:08:01It can damage those sidewalls.
00:08:03Let's look and see what it looks like when a car comes flying through here.
00:08:07This is a fast racetrack.
00:08:08Watch behind the car.
00:08:10Look at all the smoke.
00:08:11That's underbody that's getting drug off the race car.
00:08:14See it again, multiple race cars.
00:08:16Almost every car bottoms out.
00:08:18A big challenge for the teams and drivers, but that is not the only challenge at this racetrack,
00:08:23and especially on this end of it.
00:08:26Restarts are wild, and you're going to have to be aggressive.
00:08:28If you're going to win this race, you've got to be willing to go three wide.
00:08:31You've got to be willing to go four wide.
00:08:33It's all great when it works out, but every now and then, we see it doesn't work out, and
00:08:38when it doesn't, it gets ugly.
00:08:40And for some of these guys in the chase, they cannot afford bad races.
00:08:44However, Marty, if you're going to win this race, and many of the drivers in the chase
00:08:48need to win, if you're not willing to get yourself three wide, four wide, you may not
00:08:52win.
00:08:53Risk versus reward.
00:08:54A lot of risk takers today.
00:08:56Jeff, all of that leads us to this afternoon's Driving Factors, presented by DraftKings.
00:09:00With DraftKings, DJ, you can take your game anywhere.
00:09:03Yeah, and I would take this man here anywhere and definitely here.
00:09:06Look at the stats here over the last 12 races.
00:09:09It's just phenomenal what he's able to do.
00:09:11Average finish inside of top 10.
00:09:13This is the man.
00:09:14He's put it on the pole.
00:09:15He's shown everybody, I'm the favorite.
00:09:17I'm the man to beat today.
00:09:18DraftKings is now live in all 50 states.
00:09:20New DraftKings customers can spend $5 and get $150 in total bonuses.
00:09:25Download the DraftKings app and use the promo code CAR when you sign up.
00:09:30Hey, speaking of Denny Hamlin, we welcome him into the show.
00:09:33So, Denny, I'm not sure it was a kick in the shorts from the five team last week or having
00:09:38a full practice session.
00:09:39But what, in your mind, led to the resurgence in performance from the Toyotas in practice
00:09:44and qualifying yesterday?
00:09:46Well, it was definitely in qualifying.
00:09:48Certainly, practice, I thought, you know, it was kind of status quo from that standpoint.
00:09:52But, you know, we really kind of tweaked our car most of the day.
00:09:56You know, not a whole lot of changes.
00:09:57But we feel like we've made some improvements to the balance that, you know, we've had last
00:10:02week.
00:10:03And that was one of the biggest things is just, you know, where the balance was last week.
00:10:06I just couldn't be aggressive enough with it.
00:10:08So, we'll see how it all turns out.
00:10:11But, obviously, you know, confident with our starting spot.
00:10:14Hopefully, we just got to keep it there now.
00:10:16Denny, I know you and your crew chief, Chris Gale, kind of set a number thinking that at
00:10:20the beginning of this with the chase and the new chase, the points format we have now,
00:10:24that maybe 40 points a race was going to be good enough to win this.
00:10:29Obviously, with Larson's incredible streak so far, that number has changed.
00:10:34Are you thinking about numbers or just, we have to go perform and do everything right
00:10:39from this point forward?
00:10:40It's the second.
00:10:41I mean, ultimately, every week, we try to just get the best finish.
00:10:45And, you know, I can't control where others finish or anything like that or the points
00:10:49they accumulate.
00:10:50All I can control is what my result is in the first stage, second stage, and then at
00:10:54the end of the race.
00:10:55So, we'll add up all the points when this thing's said and done.
00:10:58But, you know, my guess is, you know, five, six weeks from now, we're going to be talking
00:11:02about a different picture than what we are right now.
00:11:04You know, for years, Denny, Vegas used to be a very up and down track for you and the
00:11:0811 team.
00:11:09But there's something about you and Chris Gale.
00:11:10You won two of your three races here in Las Vegas with him as your crew chief.
00:11:14What has he brought to the team that's helped you so much, specifically here?
00:11:18Yeah, I mean, we've just taken, you know, an old notebook and really made it better.
00:11:24You know, they've allowed me to be a little bit more aggressive on the restarts, and that
00:11:28certainly has helped us.
00:11:29So, I mean, we're going to have a lot of challenges today.
00:11:31It's going to be hot.
00:11:32The track is really going to be slick.
00:11:33And I would guess cars are going to be all over this racetrack.
00:11:36So, it'll be fun for the fans to watch.
00:11:39I wanted to bring up, right when we started the interview, Denny, the camera literally overheated.
00:11:44So, it went to bars and tone on the air.
00:11:46I saw that.
00:11:46That is why you are wearing a cool suit for, like, the first time in years in this race
00:11:51today.
00:11:51I mean, how tough are the conditions going to be?
00:11:54I mean, really, I could go without it today.
00:11:57It's not super humid, obviously, out here in the desert.
00:12:00But I just, I don't want to be a stubborn old man.
00:12:02I want to make sure that I continue to evolve.
00:12:06And if it's something that I feel like, you know, makes me perform better, I'm going to try it.
00:12:10All right.
00:12:10Appreciate it, Denny.
00:12:11Best of luck today in the race.
00:12:12All right.
00:12:13Thank you all.
00:12:13All right.
00:12:13Denny Hamlin starting from the pole.
00:12:15As we mentioned, how about Hamlin's teammate, Chase Briscoe, nearly had the race won last
00:12:19Sunday in Kansas.
00:12:20But now he sits over 100 points out of the lead.
00:12:24Is the Indiana native out of the championship hunt?
00:12:26We'll talk about that next.
00:12:33USA sports pre-race is brought to you by Sonic, the $7 big deal meal, live free, eat Sonic.
00:12:40Here's what's on the menu presented by Sonic.
00:12:42We mentioned Denny Hamlin is on the pole, but JGR also swept the top four spots in qualifying.
00:12:48Believe it or not, that's actually the first time in the team's 35-year history they have pulled off that
00:12:54fee.
00:12:54According to The Athletic, Casey Cain is coming back to NASCAR.
00:12:58Cain is reportedly signing a deal to come out of retirement to be full-time in the truck series with
00:13:03Spire Motorsports next year.
00:13:05And in a surprising turn of events, Brad Keselowski is out as driver at RFK Racing.
00:13:11The team announced this week they will work through next steps regarding his ownership in the organization,
00:13:17while Keselowski stated he is, quote, nowhere near ready to be done as a driver.
00:13:23So, DJ, first, your reaction to that news.
00:13:26And then how does a 42-year-old Brad Keselowski go about finding a job this late in the game?
00:13:32Yeah, I think that was a shock to everyone because as Brad went to this, put his name on the
00:13:37sign out front of the building,
00:13:39he said, this is going to be my future.
00:13:42You know, whenever I decide to get out of the car, I want to stay involved.
00:13:44And we thought that's what was going to happen.
00:13:46I think maybe they couldn't come to an agreement on the terms of how long he was going to drive.
00:13:52I can tell you this, the hardest thing as a race driver is to know when that time is going
00:13:57to come.
00:13:58I believe Brad still has a few good years.
00:14:00I don't know how many that will be, but he's still very capable of winning races.
00:14:04But where does he go to do that?
00:14:05Meanwhile, for Chase Briscoe, time is running out to jump back into the championship picture.
00:14:10In his second year at Joe Gibbs Racing, how does Briscoe feel?
00:14:14He is living up to his own expectations.
00:14:20No longer settling in.
00:14:23Yeah, I feel like I finally know what the JGR cars drive like, so I'm not, you know, trying to
00:14:28establish my feet.
00:14:29That's fair.
00:14:30I felt like it was last year right around the playoff time is when it all kind of started coming
00:14:33together.
00:14:34Chase Briscoe is going to lock his way into the championship four.
00:14:38Let's go!
00:14:39You know, last year it was just learning the car and the race team.
00:14:42But this year I thought that we were going to be able to come out and just, you know, knock
00:14:45all the fences down and be, you know, up front every single week.
00:14:48And we were from a speed standpoint, but just didn't have the execution.
00:14:51You know, in the chase we're going to have to win more than one race.
00:14:55We just haven't got the start we wanted.
00:14:57Briscoe is in the wall.
00:14:59Let's go.
00:15:00I'm like, man, what could have been if just a couple things would have went different.
00:15:03He's behind the wall.
00:15:04We don't have the wins that we probably need to have.
00:15:06It's an impressive fight from Chase Briscoe.
00:15:09Unfortunately, a possible win turns to four.
00:15:11Just need to win more races.
00:15:16So, in their own words, speed isn't the problem, DJ.
00:15:19It's clean races.
00:15:20But at 123 points out, is that too big of a mountain to climb?
00:15:24Yeah, no, it's a huge number that they have in between that.
00:15:27But because what you just mentioned, the speed they bring every single week and they have the fastest pit crew
00:15:33on pit road, I still give them a chance.
00:15:35So, where is that line when you look at the chase standings of drivers that, in your mind, still have
00:15:40a legit shot to win it all?
00:15:41Yeah, I think, in my mind, I go back to Ryan Blaney.
00:15:45And I think that I go that far back because I believe he has the potential to literally win at
00:15:51anywhere in the last four and could win the last four races.
00:15:53And that could be his way of being the champion.
00:15:55Yeah, especially when you look at Phoenix coming up in a couple weeks, a race that he won in the
00:15:59spring.
00:15:59How about Christopher Bell?
00:16:01He is only 50 points out of the lead.
00:16:03But I was kind of surprised, DJ, I mean, last week after Kansas, all this week, he said, we have
00:16:07to win three of the final six races to have a shot.
00:16:11Do you agree?
00:16:11That's a big number.
00:16:12I don't know if they'll take all of that.
00:16:13If you get stage points and everything this team and driver are capable of, they may not need that three
00:16:18wins, but they've got to be up front doing.
00:16:20The hardest thing is they're racing their own teammates, and that makes it difficult.
00:16:24And I want to ask you also about the heat, DJ, 98 degrees ambient.
00:16:28We've talked about it with Denny as well.
00:16:30And 120 in the car, how do you combat that?
00:16:32Yeah, I hope that you started hydrating earlier this week because it is going to be hot inside these cars.
00:16:36Could make a difference for someone today.
00:16:38Time for today's pre-race ceremonies from a toasty Las Vegas.
00:16:45Please rise as you are able.
00:16:47Remove your hats, and veterans render a hand salute as the Nellis Air Force Base Honor Guard presents our nation's
00:16:56colors.
00:16:57Here to offer today's invocation, please welcome Motor Racing Outreach President and Senior Chaplain, Billy Mauldin.
00:17:06Let's pray.
00:17:07Heavenly Father, as we pause and recognize your presence, we remember long-time Las Vegas Motor Speedway head of fire
00:17:16and safety employee, Bud Hurdick, who recently passed away.
00:17:20We pray that you'll bring comfort to his family and friends as only you can.
00:17:24Father, bless our drivers, teams, officials, all here in attendance today with a great day, a safe day of racing.
00:17:30And watch over the men and women of our armed forces, first responders, who are protecting us and defending this
00:17:35freedom we enjoy.
00:17:36It's in Christ's name we pray.
00:17:38Amen.
00:17:40Here to perform our national anthem, please welcome Grammy-nominated three-time platinum-selling vocalist, Matthew Santos.
00:17:50Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
00:17:59What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming
00:18:08Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
00:18:19O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming
00:18:29And the rocket's red glare
00:18:35The bombs bursting in air
00:18:41Gave proof through the night
00:18:47That our flag was still there
00:18:53Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
00:19:00Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
00:19:13O'er the light
00:19:16The land of the brave
00:19:26And the home of the brave
00:19:37And the home of the brave
00:19:45Kyle Larson has set the pace
00:19:47And if anyone's gonna show
00:19:48They can keep up
00:19:50Today's the day to make it happen
00:19:51Time to let the cards fly
00:19:53We'll get the engines fired next
00:19:54Here on USA
00:20:01Before the championships
00:20:04Before the cup wins
00:20:05Before any of it
00:20:06There was this place
00:20:08The bull ring
00:20:26The bull ring
00:20:37Kyle and I grew up racing here in Las Vegas
00:20:37And shared it with Brexton
00:20:39Father and son
00:20:40Racing together again at the bull ring
00:20:43Those are the moments
00:20:44You wish you could hold on to forever
00:20:46You wish you could hold on to forever
00:20:47And over the week, Brexton came back
00:20:49And raced in his dad's honor
00:20:50Carrying his name
00:20:52Carrying that same love for racing
00:20:54And continuing a story
00:20:56That started here a long time ago
00:20:57That's the thing about racing
00:20:59You never stop chasing
00:21:01And today
00:21:03The chase rolls into Las Vegas
00:21:06The stakes are rising
00:21:08Every lap
00:21:10Every position
00:21:12Every moment matters
00:21:14Because when you're chasing a championship
00:21:16You don't let up now
00:21:18Las Vegas
00:21:19Getting up on the flicking wheel
00:21:20And getting it done
00:21:21This is where we learned
00:21:22To chase a dream
00:21:23Good job, buddy
00:21:24Hometown wins
00:21:24This is Vegas
00:21:26This is what kids dream of
00:21:27Dream of
00:21:28Dream of
00:21:30So well said, Kurt
00:21:31Of course
00:21:32The first trip back to Vegas
00:21:33Since the passing of his brother
00:21:34Kyle
00:21:35From the Kyle Larson paint scheme
00:21:37Honoring him
00:21:38To the signs all around the track
00:21:40We're all honoring the memory
00:21:42Of the Las Vegas native
00:21:43Kyle Busch today
00:21:46DJ
00:21:46Wanted to give a shout out
00:21:47To Austin Sendrick
00:21:48After a career best
00:21:49Mile and a half run
00:21:50Second at Kansas last week
00:21:52Do you expect the same speed
00:21:54From the two team today?
00:21:55You know, I really do
00:21:56That was a great performance
00:21:57That they put in there
00:21:59And I think that they bring that car
00:22:01That same type of car here today
00:22:03And he will have another good chance
00:22:05So what about his teammate
00:22:06Joey Logano
00:22:06If he wants to stay
00:22:07In the championship conversation
00:22:09How critical is today's race?
00:22:11It's hugely critical
00:22:12But seeing their speed yesterday
00:22:14I think that it might take
00:22:16Another 2024
00:22:17Hail Mary fuel mileage situation
00:22:19For them
00:22:19He was able to win here
00:22:20A couple of years ago
00:22:21Would need something like that
00:22:22To happen again today
00:22:24Let's get the engines fired
00:22:25Here in Las Vegas

00:23:01You can fire when ready
00:23:12Well if there was ever a day I'm excited to be in an air conditioned pace car
00:23:15It's today
00:23:16It's 98 degrees out here
00:23:17One of the hottest races of the year
00:23:19The drivers are going to be fighting everything
00:23:21Mentally it's going to be demanding
00:23:22But physically
00:23:23They're going to be running through those bumps
00:23:25Bouncing around everywhere
00:23:26And telling their crew chiefs
00:23:28How bad their cars drive
00:23:29When we come back here in just a minute
00:23:31Kurt Busch has raised me one
00:23:32He's not only in the pace car to bring the field to the green
00:23:34But he'll be driving it when we come back
00:23:54Good luck bro

00:36:22That's right on board for a moment with Kyle Larson with thanks to Goodyear. Here we go.
00:36:55You can see the 45 ran through that bump. You can see the car pop really hard. Larson's heads moving
00:37:03a lot in between those heads around this end of the racetrack. Much smoother.
00:37:10You can hear him out of the gas though chasing that 45. Had to wait for the front end to
00:37:15kind of settle where it needed to be.
00:37:20I want to go back to something that I flagged before we went green Steve and that was I mentioned
00:37:24there were already reports of drivers experiencing issues. Helmet blower blowing hot air for Carson Josevar. What do you tell
00:37:30him? What can you do as a crew chief in that situation?
00:37:32Well, you for sure want to reset some things. I'm sure maybe there's some breakers you can reset. Just make
00:37:37sure the air conditioner itself hasn't maybe popped a breaker. But at that point you have to decide, you know,
00:37:42what's more important? Fresh air, hot air being blown in or shut it off completely. But it's going to be
00:37:46a battle. It's a very hot day for sure for these drivers. Probably stay on top of it. Make sure
00:37:52he's taking his fluids, Marty. Maybe even ice during a pit stop.
00:37:54Steve, here was that radio confirmation from Carson Josevar. They had this issue in practice yesterday, but it was a
00:38:01confirmation coming to green to his crew chief, Luke Lambert, that the blower was not working. Listen in.
00:38:07Yeah, no helmet blower today. Just straight hot air.
00:38:1210-4. We'll make sure we get your driver's service, whatever you need there.
00:38:15Ice, water.
00:38:17So Steve, a couple of things. They do wear a cool suit. Carson Josevar does have a cool suit.
00:38:23And then also I just checked with Luke Lambert. He has decided just to shut that blower off.
00:38:28So there'll be no air going inside Carson Josevar's helmet today, but he does have that cool suit.
00:38:33Yeah, I mean, really it's about first the health of the driver, but second the focus, right?
00:38:36I mean, look at this right here. We're talking 115 degrees on the right side, head support of Christopher Bell
00:38:42already.
00:38:43So today 98 degrees, only a degree off the hottest race ever here at Las Vegas back in 2018.
00:38:48So even though he'll have a cool suit cooling his core temperature, not having that fresh cooler air across the
00:38:56head
00:38:57and the helmet of Josevar will add to the challenge as Larson now here loses another spot to the two
00:39:02of Reddick.
00:39:02It seems like this five car is struggling maybe just a touch.
00:39:05He is struggling for sure.
00:39:06The other thing that could be impactful in regard to the helmet cooler is many drivers also run a carbon
00:39:12monoxide scrubber
00:39:14on that helmet cooler. So that obvious carbon monoxide is obviously an issue in these race cars.
00:39:19And the hotter it is, the more that becomes an issue.
00:39:22Not sure if Carson runs one or not, but for drivers that do run one, when that head cooler doesn't
00:39:28work, it is a disadvantage.
00:39:29Here is Austin Sindrick in the two, the auto trader Ford Mustang for Team Penske.
00:39:34Been a big weekend. The team won Motul Petit Le Mans in the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship last night.
00:39:40They finally got that done in the GTP class.
00:39:43So it's been a huge weekend already and coming off his best results of the year, Sindrick's moving forward.
00:39:48Hamlin leads.
00:39:53Predict the future is a hazardous occupation.
00:39:55The only thing we can be sure of is that it will be absolutely fantastic.
00:40:00I'm thinking of the incredible breakthrough, the communications satellite.
00:40:04These things will make possible a world in which we can be in instant contact with each other, wherever we
00:40:09may be.
00:40:11When that time comes, the whole world will have shrunk to a point.
00:40:21Great race, bud.
00:40:23You're the man, Denny. Should we hit the town and celebrate?
00:40:26We could.
00:40:27Or we could.
00:40:30Denny Hamlin!
00:40:31Now this is how you celebrate.
00:40:33You really know me, Denny. Like Progressive knows their 37 million customers.
00:40:38Or like a best friend.
00:40:38Exactly.
00:40:39Say ah.
00:40:41Ah.
00:40:43Nom, nom, nom, nom, nom, nom, nom.
00:40:44If your car could talk, it would tell you to get progressive.
00:40:48Is that hot cocoa in there?
00:40:50You know it.
00:40:51Slurp.
00:41:07Xfinity wants their customers online even faster. So now they're offering same-day Wi-Fi delivery. Do you think you're
00:41:12up for the job?
00:41:13I mean, I am pretty fast.
00:41:15How do you feel about cul-de-sacs?
00:41:16Just keep turning left.
00:41:18Parallel parking?
00:41:18Easier than a pit stop.
00:41:19Speed bumps?
00:41:20They're more of a suggestion.
00:41:21Three-point turns?
00:41:22I'm a two-point kind of guy.
00:41:24Good. Most people panic on that one.
00:41:26I'm here for the interview. Bubba.
00:41:30Tyler.
00:41:31Same-day Wi-Fi. Delivered NASCAR fast.
00:41:37They'll tell you who you are.
00:41:40What you can't do.
00:41:42Where you don't belong.
00:41:45But with the right people at your side, you write your own story.
00:41:49You don't wait for success. You chase it.
00:41:52Sharper, tougher, faster, with every lap.
00:41:56And when you give everything you've got, you don't just win.
00:42:00You inspire what comes next.
00:42:06And to the end zone.
00:42:09Saturday.
00:42:09It's an all-packed world matchup.
00:42:12With Jaden Denigal and the Aztecs rolling to Riesel Stadium
00:42:14to take on breakout freshmen Jesse LeGree and the Beavers.
00:42:17What a throw.
00:42:18San Diego State at Oregon State.
00:42:20Saturday on USA.
00:42:25Great way to spend a Sunday afternoon and evening.
00:42:27You're watching the South Point 400 here on USA Sports.
00:42:31Live from Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
00:42:33And you're looking at a couple of teammates, both there and the previous shot.
00:42:36It was Elliot working on Larson.
00:42:38And here is Christopher Bell in the ring, number 20, up against that Bass Pro Shops, number 19, for Joe
00:42:44Gibbs Racing.
00:42:45There's the teammates, split boxers.
00:42:47Trevor, what have you got?
00:42:56Mike's not working for Trevor.
00:43:00Larson is definitely not happy with his car.
00:43:04Look at Blaney.
00:43:05Blaney up six spots into 12th place right now.
00:43:09Only 22 laps in.
00:43:11Really good move forward.
00:43:14Kelm, what do you have on the five car?
00:43:15Yeah, Blaney taking that 11th spot from Larson.
00:43:19Larson now in 12th.
00:43:20Tried to hang on to that top 10.
00:43:21Was not able to do it in that five car.
00:43:24Larson's typically one that is very quiet on the radio unless there is a condition that he just does not
00:43:29like.
00:43:29He has already came on the radio, told the team the car is very edgy.
00:43:34So just dealing with a car that wants to step out on that rear end.
00:43:37And he's not able to do anything with it right now.
00:43:40Yeah, I mean, watch this lower box.
00:43:42Watch it turn this thing to the right, right?
00:43:44So he's got some wheel confidence there.
00:43:46Oh, correction there.
00:43:48Pretty calm.
00:43:49The last time on the exit of four, though, there was a pretty big correction.
00:43:52His hands just aren't as calm as he wants them to.
00:43:55You want the car to track.
00:43:56You don't want to have to fight it.
00:43:57But right there, I mean, he is working the wheel at 175 to 180 miles an hour.
00:44:04I will say, Steve, I wouldn't, you know, I don't like losing spots.
00:44:07But, you know, it's easier to get a car tightened up, in my opinion.
00:44:11Yeah, totally.
00:44:11You know, it's easier to get a car to get the back settled down than it is to get a
00:44:14car to turn.
00:44:15So I wouldn't give up if I was a Kyle Larson fan.
00:44:18But not to start you wanted.
00:44:19And, you know, we didn't talk about the exact way this race would run.
00:44:22But this first stage being 80 laps, I expect pit stops probably the mid to low 30s.
00:44:26They definitely are a little on the front side of halfway.
00:44:29This is a track we have seen some big incidents coming to pit road.
00:44:33So when we get in those pit cycles, you're definitely going to have to wave down the back stretch,
00:44:36let everybody know, try to be clean in and off pit road.
00:44:39And very exciting with green stop pit stops as well here at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
00:44:43With that rotation, big wings, big swings.
00:44:47Good representation here from 2311.
00:44:50Here is the Robin Hood 23 for Bubba Wallace.
00:44:53Right behind his teammate Tyler Reddick in the top six positions are all Toyotas.
00:44:58You find the best Chevy is William Byron.
00:45:00And the best Ford is Austin Sindrick right behind him in eighth place.
00:45:03But it looked like this in the spring.
00:45:05And that's when the wheels came off.
00:45:06Both Hamlin and Ty Gibbs speeding in the first set of pit stops.
00:45:10Nine total penalties here.
00:45:12That first box coming in is very short.
00:45:14It's easy to kind of get a little too quick in there and not have time to get the average
00:45:18back.
00:45:18It's Chase Elliott.
00:45:19Looks good.
00:45:20Rolling around the right side of Sindrick.
00:45:21Yeah, Carson Hosvarn at 77.
00:45:23He is ripping the top.
00:45:25And everybody's trying to drive to the bottom and go around him.
00:45:28That time he fakes them out and goes to the bottom.
00:45:32Ryan Blaney's joining the gang here as well.
00:45:35As we go further forward in the field, we'll talk about Christopher Bell in the 20 with Marty.
00:45:39Joe Gibbs racing still 1, 2, 3, 4.
00:45:41And Christopher Bell with an interesting comment to Adam Stevens just a moment ago.
00:45:46Listen in.
00:45:47How's the balance taking off?
00:45:49Super cozy over the bumps in 1 and 2.
00:45:53Super cozy over the bumps in 1 and 2.
00:45:55Steve, I'm not sure if you've ever heard super cozy through the bumps in 1 and 2, but Bell's feeling
00:46:00it right now.
00:46:01I've never heard positive over the bumps ever in my entire life as a crew chief.
00:46:05So cozy, I would say, is two thumbs up.
00:46:08Look, he sounded that way when you talked to him, Jeff.
00:46:10I mean, in those pace laps.
00:46:12You asked him, could he win.
00:46:13He was a matter of fact that he could.
00:46:14Why are you so good here?
00:46:15Because I'm in a joke, Gibbs Camry.
00:46:17I mean, he was very polite, but blunt and to the point.
00:46:21I think that's why.
00:46:22I think that was watching a 12 car.
00:46:24I think that's one of the advantages they have at some racetracks is how well they go over the bumps.
00:46:29Seems like their cars manage the bumps really well.
00:46:31Blaney in particular.
00:46:33He told me earlier this year, he just doesn't let the bump bother him.
00:46:36He just said, you know, he wants the car to turn.
00:46:38As long as he can keep the back end underneath him, he's okay.
00:46:42And it shows up on the racetrack with speed.
00:46:44That was a really nice corner exit by Blaney.
00:46:47I thought he was going to have some trouble with the wake of the nine.
00:46:49Turns in early.
00:46:50Chases that clean air.
00:46:51That will give him to the left rear corner of the nine.
00:46:53We'll see if he'll be able to get the power up.
00:46:55Hard pass to do.
00:46:57That middle just keeps that momentum on corner exit.
00:46:59A little bit better of an opportunity down here, I think, for passing.
00:47:07Blaney's had such a promising opening stanza of this first stage
00:47:11because his teammate, his other teammate, Joey Logano, started way back in 23rd.
00:47:16Joey's made mild progress to 19th.
00:47:19But Ryan has just been scorching his way through the field up 10 positions.
00:47:23So as we watch as the 77 of the 12 exit this next set of corners,
00:47:26this is why pit road here could be so difficult
00:47:28because you're going to want to stay on the banking as long as you can
00:47:31as you break to get all the way around to pit entry.
00:47:34So see where the 77 is right here.
00:47:36This is middle of the corner.
00:47:37If he was coming to pit road, he would still stay up, up, up.
00:47:40He wouldn't turn in until right there, all the way on corner exit.
00:47:44So you're actually de-selling in the preferred lane.
00:47:48Hopefully they get it all sorted out and worked out.
00:47:51And Denny Hamlin, his pace, Ty Gibbs' pace, they're already lapping guys.
00:47:55You know, they've lapped Chastain.
00:47:57They've lapped Zillage.
00:47:59Gillen's the next guy to lapped.
00:48:01Nemechek's not far.
00:48:03I mean, it is.
00:48:04These guys at the front are flying as this battle continues.
00:48:11They're coming through traffic very effectively.
00:48:14Hamlin and Gibbs just slicing their way through.
00:48:16And then there's another couple of two and a half seconds back to chase Briscoe.
00:48:22If you're the five of Larson, who's now fallen outside the top ten, 14th,
00:48:26I would expect some big adjustments on this five car.
00:48:29And a green flag pit stop,
00:48:30while you would think you were losing more time because everyone's at speed,
00:48:33you actually lose less positions.
00:48:34If you're ever going to want to make big adjustments,
00:48:36you want to do them under green, not under yellow,
00:48:39when the whole field is stacked there together.
00:48:41And I'm going to hand that out the window.
00:48:42Yeah, sorry, Jeff.
00:48:43Yeah, he's coming down pit road.
00:48:45This team, you know, starting six.
00:48:48They were not worried about getting to stage points starting six.
00:48:52This has been a surprise.
00:48:53I agree with you, Steve.
00:48:54Big change is coming right here.
00:48:55And this will open the window for everyone.
00:48:57Even though the five's struggling,
00:48:58you do not want guys to get on fresh tires early.
00:49:01And Kyle Larson coming to a stop in front of his crew.
00:49:04Remember, he said edgy about that race car.
00:49:06They thought similar balance issues in the spring.
00:49:08Obviously, still need to work on that car
00:49:10as they'll go up under that front right
00:49:13to make a front-end adjustment for Kyle Larson.
00:49:15So an extended pit stop under green,
00:49:18not great for the five team.
00:49:20Trevor.
00:49:22Yeah, Kim, it's pit road.
00:49:24As well, Ryan said earlier today
00:49:26that he was in the best race car
00:49:27he's ever had at this racetrack.
00:49:30But the bumps are going to be bad for him.
00:49:31Do you see Kyle Larson still struggling?
00:49:33And just now coming off pit road,
00:49:34that's going to be a big time loss there, Steve.
00:49:36Yeah, the 11 to Danny Hamlin,
00:49:38the leader now coming.
00:49:38I believe that's going to cost the five of Larson
00:49:40a lap to the leaders.
00:49:41We'll see where he cycles out.
00:49:42Look how busy pit road is.
00:49:45Orderly so far,
00:49:46but it's the third white car in line
00:49:48as they come at you.
00:49:49That's the 11 of Danny Hamlin,
00:49:51the yellow banner on the top of the windshield,
00:49:53pitting all the way down
00:49:55the second half of pit road.
00:49:57Marty.
00:49:58Long trip down pit road for Danny Hamlin,
00:50:00his teammate Ty Gibbs,
00:50:02also coming down pit road.
00:50:03Ty Gibbs said the longer we ran,
00:50:05the freer the car got for Hamlin,
00:50:07who's led every lap to this point
00:50:08when he came to pit road.
00:50:09A little bit free at max load.
00:50:11He's in and just a tick tight
00:50:12late on exit for that 11 car.
00:50:17Pitch stall one has been known
00:50:18to be a little slick.
00:50:19The 11 does a nice job in.
00:50:21You see Ty Gibbs,
00:50:22you see Briscoe,
00:50:23you see Bell,
00:50:24Byron also leaving as well.
00:50:2645 of Reddick now in, Kim.
00:50:28Yeah, and for Reddick,
00:50:28he said it was migrating tight.
00:50:30Cruci Billy Scott asked him
00:50:31to try and use a higher lane
00:50:32to free it up.
00:50:33That was not working for him.
00:50:35Four fresh Goodyear tires,
00:50:36Sunoco fuel,
00:50:37air pressure adjustment.
00:50:39As we look at Joey Logano
00:50:40also making a stop
00:50:41during this green flag cycle.
00:50:42Joey said,
00:50:43I'm about a 7.5 out of 10 loose.
00:50:46I just need really good
00:50:48right rear grip
00:50:49so they look to make
00:50:49some adjustment
00:50:50to get him more in the racetrack
00:50:51with the rear.
00:50:53You want to be free
00:50:53at Bubba Wallace as well.
00:50:54Yeah.
00:50:57Marty's coming your way.
00:50:59Bubba Wallace coming down pit road.
00:51:01He said he needed
00:51:01a little bit more lateral grip,
00:51:03especially on entry,
00:51:04but not a lot of complaints
00:51:06with the 23 car showing pace
00:51:08here at the mile and a half
00:51:09in Las Vegas.
00:51:10They ran top five here
00:51:11in the spring.
00:51:12Kind of lost a handle
00:51:13a little bit in stage three.
00:51:15Wound up finishing ninth
00:51:15in that race,
00:51:16but a nice run so far
00:51:17for this 23 bunch.
00:51:1954 of Ty Gibbs,
00:51:21much like a year ago.
00:51:22Too fast entering
00:51:23for the driver of the 54.
00:51:25That is not the birthday present
00:51:27he was hoping for
00:51:28on this his 24th birthday.
00:51:30He'll have to do a pass-through
00:51:31and to clean up
00:51:32that extended stop
00:51:33for the five of Kyle Larson.
00:51:35He absolutely lost a lap
00:51:37to the 11 car,
00:51:38so that very lengthy stop
00:51:40cost Kyle Larson.
00:51:42He was on pit road
00:51:43for 26 seconds
00:51:45in his pit box
00:51:46where most people
00:51:47were on for nine
00:51:48or ten seconds.
00:51:49Steve,
00:51:49there's no way
00:51:50that they knew
00:51:51it was going to take
00:51:52that long
00:51:52to make that change.
00:51:53I think that was
00:51:53a call change
00:51:55that did not go well.
00:51:56If you knew
00:51:57it was going to take
00:51:57that long,
00:51:58you would have done
00:51:58that under caution
00:51:59because you can't give
00:52:00a lap up.
00:52:01Yeah,
00:52:01when I meant
00:52:01longer stop,
00:52:02I meant a couple seconds
00:52:03and maybe a wedge wrench.
00:52:04I believe it was
00:52:05a front height adjustment.
00:52:06That's what it looked like.
00:52:07The tire changer
00:52:07was reaching in,
00:52:08turning the right front shock,
00:52:09but something absolutely
00:52:11was amiss.
00:52:11It had to have taken longer
00:52:13than the crew chief
00:52:14or the team wanted.
00:52:15Let's listen in.
00:52:17Was it meant to be
00:52:18that long
00:52:19or was there another issue?
00:52:20It was meant to be
00:52:21that long
00:52:22for an end adjustment.
00:52:23Let me know
00:52:24how it feels.
00:52:25Lapt down.
00:52:26Yeah.
00:52:26Okay.
00:52:27Well,
00:52:28I'll give Cliff Daniels
00:52:29credit.
00:52:29He's very consistent
00:52:30with his feedback.
00:52:30So you see right here
00:52:31the tire changer
00:52:32reaches in on the right side
00:52:33and then he's having
00:52:34a little bit of an issue,
00:52:35right?
00:52:35So you see the work
00:52:36being done right there.
00:52:37He tries with his right hand,
00:52:38tries with the left,
00:52:39probably working on the height
00:52:41of the right front.
00:52:42You can turn the adjuster
00:52:43on the spring.
00:52:44It's a coilover system
00:52:45with the shock.
00:52:45You can also click
00:52:47the shock itself.
00:52:47So it could have been
00:52:48a rebound or a compression
00:52:49adjustment.
00:52:50Even Kyle Larson
00:52:51is asking,
00:52:52man,
00:52:52do we think it was going
00:52:53to take that long
00:52:54to lose a lap?
00:52:55Now,
00:52:55what I will say,
00:52:56I'll give Cliff Daniels
00:52:57this is great leadership.
00:52:58Even if that was
00:52:59five or six seconds
00:53:00longer than he thought,
00:53:01he didn't blame the crew.
00:53:03He took the shot.
00:53:04He said,
00:53:04nope,
00:53:04that's what I expected.
00:53:05He stuck with his guns.
00:53:06I like the leadership
00:53:07from Cliff Daniels
00:53:08and I like kind of
00:53:09biting the bullet
00:53:10and making the change early.
00:53:12Here comes Ryan Blaney.
00:53:14Trevor,
00:53:14he's coming your way.
00:53:15He's had such a productive
00:53:16first stage run so far.
00:53:17We're halfway through it.
00:53:19That's exactly right,
00:53:20Lee.
00:53:20They started right outside
00:53:22the top 20,
00:53:22drove their way up to 10th
00:53:23before the pit cycle started,
00:53:25now inherited the lead.
00:53:25This is a play
00:53:26that we saw by them
00:53:27at Kansas
00:53:28where they opted to stay
00:53:29out about six laps longer
00:53:30than anybody else
00:53:31and try to get the gain
00:53:32on the backside of the run,
00:53:33Marty.
00:53:33Yeah,
00:53:33Trevor,
00:53:34great point.
00:53:35These teams splitting it
00:53:36more in half.
00:53:37Luke Lambert bringing
00:53:37Carson Hosovar to pit road.
00:53:39Said he wasn't bad
00:53:40in one and two,
00:53:41but just needed a little
00:53:42more overall grip
00:53:43in turns three and four.
00:53:45To your point,
00:53:46Trevor,
00:53:46we'll see if this pays off
00:53:47with the pressure tires
00:53:48later in the run
00:53:49at the end of stage one.
00:53:50And the driver
00:53:51of that Spectrum 77
00:53:52for Spire Motorsports.
00:53:53No helmet blower.
00:53:55It's 115 degrees
00:53:57inside these cars
00:53:58right now.
00:53:59He's doing a good job.
00:54:00Hamlin,
00:54:01back to the front.
00:54:11I suddenly realized
00:54:13that I was no longer
00:54:17driving conscious
00:54:18and I was in a different
00:54:20dimension.
00:54:22Just going,
00:54:23going, going.

00:56:04This NASCAR postseason,
00:56:06every time you hear
00:56:08a swear on the radio
00:56:09during the chase,
00:56:10NASCAR throws
00:56:11five bucks
00:56:12into the swear jar.
00:56:13And if you can guess
00:56:14how many times
00:56:15they swear,
00:56:16you can win
00:56:17the whole
00:56:18jar of cash.
00:56:25NASCAR swear jar.
00:56:28The chase is about
00:56:29to pay off.
00:56:37Under caution here
00:56:38at Las Vegas Motor Speedway
00:56:39for Zane Smith
00:56:40who had an incident
00:56:42all by himself.
00:56:43Let's check it out.
00:56:44Yeah, we talked about
00:56:45this racetrack
00:56:46being slick.
00:56:48Zane drives
00:56:49in a corner
00:56:49and just around
00:56:50it goes
00:56:50as quickly
00:56:51as it went around.
00:56:53I didn't know
00:56:54it was odd looking.
00:56:56Right rear looks flat.
00:56:58Yes.
00:56:59Remember,
00:56:59this is a teammate
00:57:00to the four
00:57:01of Noah Gretzson
00:57:02who had was in practice.
00:57:03Tyler Reddick,
00:57:03watch this.
00:57:07Drive to the smoke.
00:57:09Remember that huge
00:57:10incident on pit entry
00:57:11with Ty Dillon
00:57:12and William Byron
00:57:14last year?
00:57:14This is what happened
00:57:15to Smith.
00:57:15You can hear it.
00:57:16You can hear the tire
00:57:17down right rear.
00:57:18That caution,
00:57:20that caution was a break
00:57:21for some and hurt others.
00:57:22Yeah, big, big break
00:57:23for Todd Gillen
00:57:24who had yet to pit.
00:57:25He's running
00:57:25in the sixth position
00:57:26and split decision
00:57:27at the front.
00:57:27Denny Hamlin
00:57:28will come for fresh tires.
00:57:29Some decide to stay out.
00:57:31So split decision
00:57:31at the front of the field.
00:57:32Kim.
00:57:33Yeah, and Tyler Reddick
00:57:34is one of those
00:57:35that comes down
00:57:36and for him,
00:57:37he actually was dealing
00:57:39with an alternator issue.
00:57:40They won't address it here.
00:57:41They'll wait
00:57:41to the stage end
00:57:42but it just looks like
00:57:43Space Jam was the call
00:57:45for them, Marty.
00:57:46Denny Hamlin comes down
00:57:47pit road from the lead
00:57:49and not a ton of cars
00:57:50coming down pit road
00:57:51with them.
00:57:52They made that call
00:57:53pretty quickly.
00:57:53Going to be right side tires
00:57:55for Denny Hamlin
00:57:55until the car was just
00:57:56a tick tight.
00:57:57Denny did ask,
00:57:58how far are we going
00:57:59to be back in traffic
00:58:00and if you're putting me
00:58:01in traffic,
00:58:01I need some adjustments
00:58:02because I'm going
00:58:03to be way tighter.
00:58:04So, while race leader
00:58:06Denny Hamlin came,
00:58:07two of his teammates
00:58:08did not.
00:58:10Brisco and Bell
00:58:12will sort out
00:58:13the reorder
00:58:14when we come back.
00:58:20On Friday,
00:58:21the South Point Hotel
00:58:22Casino and Spa
00:58:23hosted the Brendan Gaughan
00:58:24Celebrity Blackjack Tournament
00:58:25where over $45,000
00:58:27was raised for charity
00:58:28and Cup Series stars
00:58:30like Noah Gregson,
00:58:31Todd Gilliland,
00:58:31Ty Dillon
00:58:32and chase driver
00:58:32Daniel Suarez
00:58:33let the chips stack
00:58:34to support Speedway
00:58:35Children's Charities
00:58:37and their star-studded event
00:58:38was kicked off
00:58:40right there
00:58:41for the NASCAR weekend
00:58:42to begin in a positive way
00:58:43and if you want to stay
00:58:44where the races stay
00:58:45in Las Vegas,
00:58:46book one of South Point's
00:58:472027 NASCAR
00:58:48Race and Room Packages.
00:58:53A lot happened right there
00:58:54with that caution.
00:58:56Ty Gibbs,
00:58:57he caught a break.
00:58:58He had just gotten penalized.
00:59:00He was able to stay
00:59:02in the lead lap.
00:59:03Kyle Larson,
00:59:04he had been lapped
00:59:05because of the long change
00:59:06on pit road under Green
00:59:09when the 11 of Hamlin pitted
00:59:11that put Kyle Larson
00:59:12behind him.
00:59:13He was now given
00:59:15the wave around
00:59:16so Kyle Larson's driving
00:59:17to the back of the pack.
00:59:18He is back in the lead lap.
00:59:19Yeah, that helped Larson
00:59:20out completely, right?
00:59:21Because that put him
00:59:22back in the lead lap
00:59:22and as you see
00:59:23on the left-hand side,
00:59:24the top eight
00:59:24have all stayed
00:59:26on the racetrack
00:59:26from their green flag pit stop.
00:59:28Briscoe and Bell
00:59:28being the front.
00:59:30First car on tires,
00:59:31Hamlin, Reddick,
00:59:32Wallace, Byron.
00:59:33Interesting thought here.
00:59:34If you're the crew chief
00:59:35of the 11 car, Steve,
00:59:36could you have stayed
00:59:37on the racetrack
00:59:38in an effort to keep
00:59:39in an effort to keep
00:59:39the five of Larson
00:59:40a lap down?
00:59:42I mean, I understand
00:59:43the thing, the idea.
00:59:45I think at this point
00:59:46I would stick to my race
00:59:47and if I felt like
00:59:48pitting was the right call
00:59:49for me, I'm not going
00:59:49to worry about what it does
00:59:50or doesn't do for Larson.
00:59:52Fully focused look there
00:59:53of Chris Gayle,
00:59:53the crew chief
00:59:54for Denny Hamlin.
00:59:55Meanwhile,
00:59:56Joe Gibbs drivers
00:59:57are at the front
00:59:58of this field
00:59:59ready to get it going again
01:00:01with 31 to go
01:00:03in stage one
01:00:04as Chase Briscoe
01:00:05at the front.
01:00:06What abrupt lane change
01:00:08by the 19
01:00:08to climb up
01:00:09in front of Bell.
01:00:10The 11 got a little bit
01:00:11of a block here.
01:00:12Very interested to see
01:00:12what these new tires do.
01:00:14Yeah, that 12 of Blaney,
01:00:15he's got the best tires.
01:00:16Everybody up front.
01:00:18He stayed out,
01:00:19better on lap 41
01:00:20under green.
01:00:20Everybody else
01:00:21around him at 35.
01:00:23And remember,
01:00:23he has come
01:00:24from way back
01:00:25in 20th position
01:00:27on the grid.
01:00:28It has been a super
01:00:29productive opening stage
01:00:30for Blaney.
01:00:31Chase Elliott
01:00:32right behind.
01:00:35Big move by the 23,
01:00:36three wide
01:00:37down on the flat.
01:00:40Bell jumps out
01:00:41of line for the lead.
01:00:44Daniel Suarez
01:00:45in that blue
01:00:45and white
01:00:46freeway insurance
01:00:47number seven
01:00:49for Spire Motorsports.
01:00:50Off to a good start
01:00:51as well.
01:00:52He's on the same
01:00:53strategy call
01:00:54as Ryan Blaney.
01:00:55Look at this right here.
01:00:56Bell trying to block.
01:00:58He blocked
01:00:59just enough, Steve,
01:01:00to take some momentum
01:01:01away from the 12 car.
01:01:0429 to go
01:01:05in this stage.
01:01:06This call
01:01:06to get tires
01:01:07was a little bit
01:01:07about track position,
01:01:08but it was also
01:01:09about how many tires
01:01:10they have.
01:01:11Really only have
01:01:12about eight sets
01:01:13for the entire race,
01:01:14so you have to be
01:01:14careful using a bunch
01:01:15early if we are
01:01:16going to see
01:01:17cautions later
01:01:17in the race.
01:01:19Here come the 23-11
01:01:20teammates.
01:01:20They're together again.
01:01:21That's Wallace
01:01:22and Reddick.
01:01:23Tell us more
01:01:24about the 45,
01:01:24Kim Kuhn.
01:01:25Yeah, I mentioned
01:01:26under that caution
01:01:27when he came down
01:01:28for two tires,
01:01:29they were dealing
01:01:29with an alternator issue.
01:01:31Take a listen
01:01:31to the radio
01:01:32from Tyler Reddick
01:01:33to his team.
01:01:45And it went
01:01:46for longer periods
01:01:47of off,
01:01:48and then now
01:01:48it just went
01:01:49to no more off.
01:01:50He has everything
01:01:51turned off
01:01:51but his cool suit.
01:01:52They did ask him
01:01:53the voltage.
01:01:54At one point,
01:01:54it got down to 12,
01:01:55went back up
01:01:56to about 14.1,
01:01:5814.2.
01:01:59They're going
01:01:59to continue
01:02:00to monitor that
01:02:00and decide
01:02:01if they need
01:02:01to diagnose
01:02:02or do anything
01:02:02at the end
01:02:03of this first stage.
01:02:04Sounds intermittent.
01:02:05That shouldn't move
01:02:06around quite that much.
01:02:07The alternator
01:02:08might be charging
01:02:09some chaos
01:02:11in the back
01:02:11of the pack.
01:02:12Remember,
01:02:13this 45 car
01:02:14won Darlington
01:02:15in the spring
01:02:16changing a battery
01:02:17during the race.
01:02:18So this isn't
01:02:19the first time
01:02:19teams have
01:02:20this type of issue.
01:02:22Pretty crazy.
01:02:24Three drivers
01:02:24in the top six
01:02:25in points
01:02:26entering this race.
01:02:27are 20th,
01:02:2925th,
01:02:30and 28th.
01:02:31Logano,
01:02:32Gibbs,
01:02:32and Larson.
01:02:33That makes it
01:02:34even harder
01:02:35afternoon.
01:02:36Tell us your thoughts,
01:02:38TJ.
01:02:38What have you observed
01:02:39so far?
01:02:40Well,
01:02:40let's address
01:02:41Kyle Larson.
01:02:42I know what Steve
01:02:43just said
01:02:44and I understand
01:02:44what you're saying.
01:02:45I would have kept
01:02:46that five car
01:02:47a lap down
01:02:48as long as possible
01:02:49today.
01:02:49That's the one man
01:02:50that you are racing
01:02:51and the other guys
01:02:53are in the same position
01:02:54you are with tires there.
01:02:56Give up that track position
01:02:57but keep him down.
01:02:58We'll see.
01:02:59I see his car
01:03:00still not very good
01:03:01but that's kind of
01:03:02what I see
01:03:02at this point in time.
01:03:03I see that there's
01:03:04a chance to gain
01:03:05a lot of points
01:03:06here today
01:03:07in the first couple
01:03:07of stages.
01:03:08Without a doubt,
01:03:09especially with the five
01:03:09struggling, right?
01:03:10Those stage points
01:03:11will be even more important
01:03:12for those that are going
01:03:12to be able to score them.
01:03:16Dollar Tree on board
01:03:17with Eric Jones.
01:03:18Really likes his place
01:03:20and looking for a good
01:03:21result this afternoon.
01:03:23And remember,
01:03:23because Larson took
01:03:24the wave around,
01:03:25he couldn't pit,
01:03:26right?
01:03:26So he's down here.
01:03:27He pitted on lap 33
01:03:28in a green flag.
01:03:30Almost everyone around
01:03:31him has better tires
01:03:32so it's going to be
01:03:34difficult racing
01:03:34for him back here.
01:03:37Kim?
01:03:38Yeah, and for the five
01:03:40of Kyle Larson,
01:03:40we saw those extended
01:03:42pit stops under green
01:03:44that lost the major
01:03:45track position.
01:03:46Unfortunately,
01:03:47that extended stop
01:03:48did not alleviate
01:03:49any of his balance
01:03:50problems.
01:03:50Larson saying no rear grip,
01:03:52can't run the bottom
01:03:53in one and two.
01:03:54When I arc,
01:03:54can't turn my hands,
01:03:55just feels yawed out back.
01:03:57I am out of the racetrack
01:03:59with the rear.
01:04:00It's shocking that they
01:04:01had to make that big
01:04:02of an adjustment.
01:04:02Remember,
01:04:03we have had limited
01:04:05to no practice
01:04:05in the chase
01:04:06because of weather,
01:04:07but here in Las Vegas,
01:04:07we had 50 minutes
01:04:08with two sets of tires.
01:04:10I thought the five
01:04:11looked okay in practice
01:04:12when they interviewed.
01:04:13He talked about
01:04:14how it got better
01:04:14on the second set.
01:04:15I would have just felt
01:04:16they would have had
01:04:17a more,
01:04:17you know,
01:04:18a closer feel
01:04:19of what they need.
01:04:21I was,
01:04:22I talked to multiple
01:04:23drivers this morning
01:04:24and many pointed
01:04:25to this five car
01:04:25and said they thought
01:04:26he was really,
01:04:27really good at practice.
01:04:29What I saw
01:04:30didn't necessarily
01:04:30agree with that,
01:04:31but I had so many say it
01:04:33and it makes you wonder
01:04:34if immediately
01:04:35they went to that
01:04:35big of a change,
01:04:36they changed something
01:04:37overnight.
01:04:38Yeah.
01:04:38That they're like,
01:04:39okay,
01:04:39we know we did this
01:04:40and we know we're struggling,
01:04:41let's go back
01:04:41on this change.
01:04:43It is,
01:04:44it does seem like
01:04:45it was a very quick
01:04:46trigger to get to that thing.
01:04:47Like,
01:04:47it was definitely something
01:04:48either outside the box
01:04:49or like you mentioned
01:04:50overnight.
01:04:50I do know one thing,
01:04:51Steve,
01:04:52it's a lot easier up here.
01:04:53Oh.
01:04:55Man.
01:04:56My strategy calls
01:04:57on Monday
01:04:57are nearly undefeated.
01:05:00Hendrick Motorsports,
01:05:01Team Penske
01:05:02working here
01:05:02with Chase Elliott
01:05:03and Austin Sindrick
01:05:04and Austin Sindrick
01:05:05decides to go up
01:05:05high by the wall.
01:05:07Talking about
01:05:0810th and 11th
01:05:09here at the moment
01:05:11and importantly
01:05:12with 20 to go
01:05:13from here,
01:05:1321 to go,
01:05:14pardon me,
01:05:14they are trying
01:05:15to get as many
01:05:16stage points
01:05:17as they can.
01:05:17Let's talk more
01:05:18about the 9 of Elliott
01:05:19with Drev.
01:05:20Yeah,
01:05:21absolutely not surprised
01:05:22to see Alan Gustafson
01:05:23leave Chase Elliott
01:05:24out earlier today
01:05:25when I was in that meeting.
01:05:26They talked about
01:05:26the importance
01:05:27of track position
01:05:27even over tires
01:05:29or something else
01:05:30that might,
01:05:30you know,
01:05:30be normally
01:05:31a negative thing.
01:05:32They said we've got
01:05:32to get track position.
01:05:33Qualifying's not been
01:05:34a strong suit for us
01:05:35but today we feel
01:05:36like we have
01:05:36a little better
01:05:37track position.
01:05:37If we get that opportunity
01:05:38we need to take it
01:05:40and try to take
01:05:40advantage of it.
01:05:43Doing a nice job
01:05:44just outside the top 10.
01:05:49He was the 19
01:05:50of Briscoe leads.
01:05:51It reminds me,
01:05:51you know,
01:05:51a week ago
01:05:52it was Kyle Larson
01:05:53who dominated.
01:05:54Briscoe got by him
01:05:55but was unable
01:05:55to hold the lead.
01:05:56He was very vocal
01:05:56about how his car changes
01:05:58from the lead
01:05:58versus traffic
01:05:59and then he hasn't
01:06:00been able to get
01:06:00that balance right.
01:06:01You have to ask yourself
01:06:02does this strategy
01:06:03call by James Small
01:06:04a chance to get his driver
01:06:05some clean air
01:06:06to maybe understand
01:06:07what that 19 drives like
01:06:09by himself
01:06:09out here leading the pack
01:06:10to help assist
01:06:12getting that balance right.
01:06:13As a crew chief,
01:06:13Jeff,
01:06:14I can see the data
01:06:15but I also,
01:06:16I need your feedback,
01:06:17right?
01:06:17And when we talk
01:06:18about experience,
01:06:20that's what I'm looking for
01:06:21is a driver that says
01:06:22I know I'm loose
01:06:23but this is how loose
01:06:23I need to be
01:06:24for X or Y.
01:06:25We'll see if this helps
01:06:26the 19 as the race continues.
01:06:28Well,
01:06:28clean air has certainly
01:06:29helped him
01:06:29because he is flying.
01:06:30He's the fastest car
01:06:31on the racetrack
01:06:31and talk about learning
01:06:33and changing stuff.
01:06:34These guys behind him
01:06:35in the middle of this mess,
01:06:36they're also learning
01:06:36what does my car need to do?
01:06:38Remember,
01:06:39we're 19 laps
01:06:40before the end of stage one
01:06:42so a couple things
01:06:43on the line.
01:06:44How do I make my car better
01:06:45for the rest of the race
01:06:46but how do I maximize this
01:06:47and try to get stage points?
01:06:49Jeff,
01:06:49those issues
01:06:49that we've spoken about
01:06:51for Chase Briscoe
01:06:51and the 19 team
01:06:52in the chase
01:06:53have cost him
01:06:54some 75 points
01:06:56whether they've been
01:06:57forced or unforced errors.
01:06:58He leads well now, though.
01:07:08Hey, guys.
