00:30:02And if the gearbox is broken, they might not be able to tow it or push it.
00:30:06That's a very good point.
00:30:08So at least another couple of minutes, I think,
00:30:13before they get that out of the way, at least.
00:30:15There's your new race leader, Kimi Antonelli.
00:30:18Max Verstappen is on the same back straight.
00:30:21As Antonelli gets to the hairpin, Verstappen's about two-thirds of the way.
00:30:25And now the call comes into box.
00:30:28And I think they've decided at Mercedes, no point in staying out.
00:30:32And George is going to box, too.
00:30:35So we'll keep it as it is.
00:30:37If Isaac Hadjar doesn't box, he might well be in between ahead of the two Mercedes.
00:30:44We shall see.
00:30:45Double stacking down at Mercedes.
00:30:482.3 seconds for Kimi Antonelli as Isaac Hadjar does come in.
00:30:52Just saw him at the top of your screen.
00:30:55George Russell has 2.6 seconds.
00:30:59So not as quick as Kimi Antonelli, but by 3.10.
00:31:03Nothing really to make much of an impact.
00:31:05That's Portoleto coming down the main straight.
00:31:08So he's a lapped car.
00:31:10And Max Verstappen goes back into the lead of this race.
00:31:14And what Red Bull are doing here with Isaac Hadjar is saying, yeah, we think you're going to be under
00:31:18threat from Lewis Hamilton.
00:31:20And you're not going to have the grip to defend with.
00:31:22So we're going to give you a new set of tyres.
00:31:24He will be closer.
00:31:25But you will have a bit more grip to defend.
00:31:30Look at that.
00:31:30That's close.
00:31:31Just out in front of Piastri.
00:31:33And Hamilton is Isaac Hadjar.
00:31:36I didn't think it was going to be too close because obviously he's going down that pit exit and doesn't
00:31:42necessarily have to stick to the same delta at that point and the same slow time as everyone else.
00:31:47That car's going, the strand of Williams is going nowhere at the moment.
00:31:52And Norris, the vehicle that looks like it's going to tow it away and lift it away.
00:31:58So, yeah, McLaren have gained some track position over Hamilton with Piastri and brought Norris back into play.
00:32:07Norris is also now ahead then of Leclerc.
00:32:10So it's McLaren Ferrari, McLaren Ferrari in that respect.
00:32:15But if it's what you don't want to do is have a full safety car and then be on used
00:32:22tyres for the restart.
00:32:23If you're Oscar Piastri, for instance.
00:32:25He would be struggling on those.
00:32:29So they'd only done a dozen laps, for example, Russell's tyres.
00:32:34But they needed to pit and I think keep it equal at Mercedes.
00:32:38I'm just going to ask you the question here.
00:32:40If they haven't recovered Alex Albon's Williams yet and they're struggling a touch,
00:32:43I wonder, I was just about to say, do we need the full safety car to build enough of a
00:32:48gap on the track
00:32:49for the marshals to get where they are and to build up, you know, that gap so they can do
00:32:55their work?
00:32:55And, well, that question is answered.
00:32:57Now this changes dramatically because where the Mercedes was struggling on pace a little bit
00:33:04with a medium tyre to Max Verstappen, now they're all on the soft tyre.
00:33:07But Piastri is a bit of a sitting duck, sadly, to those around him because he stayed out, hasn't changed
00:33:16his tyres.
00:33:17Piastri has been on those hard tyres for 11 laps.
00:33:19Maybe they'll pit him now.
00:33:20They'll pit him now.
00:33:21Yeah, they might pit Lando Norris too.
00:33:23They're pitting Piastri.
00:33:24They've got a chance to pit Piastri because it might just keep him ahead of Leclerc.
00:33:30And they can't leave him out for a restart on those.
00:33:33They're going to pit Lando Norris as well because he's been out on his soft tyres for 10 laps.
00:33:38They might think because it was the softs they'll take that gamble.
00:33:42Nothing to win, nothing to lose necessarily.
00:33:45Lawson's also coming into the pits.
00:33:47But let's just watch Charles Leclerc making his way down the main straight here
00:33:52because Oscar Piastri is racing Charles Leclerc, albeit at very low speeds,
00:33:58behind what is now a full safety car.
00:34:01There's Charles Leclerc.
00:34:02Charles Leclerc is going to be ahead here of Oscar Piastri.
00:34:06Charles Leclerc is ahead of Oscar Piastri.
00:34:08So the Ferrari there into sixth place behind his teammate Lewis Hamilton.
00:34:12Piastri seventh, Norris eighth.
00:34:14Lawson has also pitted.
00:34:17Fernando Alonso is also pitting.
00:34:19Makes sense for these two pit behind the full safety car
00:34:23as the Williams is getting lifted and out of the way.
00:34:28The teams would have seen as we did that basically the car wasn't going anywhere
00:34:32and nor was the recovery vehicle.
00:34:34And it was almost, well it seemed obvious that they were waiting for the full safety car.
00:34:41I do like, I do like a sprint weekend Martin,
00:34:45but I also like a little sprint race at the end of a Grand Prix.
00:34:48Just to, you know, just to give us the full bag of tricks
00:34:52that this Bahrain Grand Prix Malaysia has served up today.
00:34:57We're going to get similar to what we expected at the start of the race, you know.
00:35:03It's going to be the same, the same bandit, isn't it?
00:35:05Yes.
00:35:05That were at the front of the grid.
00:35:06Had it been a dry start.
00:35:08We've waited for a bit though.
00:35:09There'll be nose to tail, but there will be some,
00:35:12well, Sainz presumably will get the wave by, won't he?
00:35:15The lapped runners.
00:35:16And Bortoletto and Perez.
00:35:19They're the three lapped cars.
00:35:21Yes.
00:35:23So that just to give us a bit more time.
00:35:25We've got officially 31 minutes and 50 seconds to go of this race
00:35:30because the clock has been running down.
00:35:33We should still, even if we finish behind the safety car, get all the laps in.
00:35:38Bernie Collins, you were saying something to me in my ears while Martin and I were having a chat.
00:35:43So why don't you share this with the world?
00:35:45Well, what I was saying, actually, it'll be a few laps yet just because of those lapped cars.
00:35:50They're going to have to wait for the pack to punch up a bit.
00:35:52Then they'll let Carlos Sainz and Bortoletto accept or pass.
00:35:56So this is going to be a few laps yet of this safety car.
00:36:00So it'll be a very short number of racing laps, I believe, at the end.
00:36:03Probably around five, I guess, racing laps at the end.
00:36:07And we do like a little sprint finish to a Grand Prix.
00:36:11Max Verstappen will move up in the fifth place.
00:36:13In the championship, two points behind Lando Norris.
00:36:17Seems to be the time of season that Max Verstappen makes a few gains.
00:36:21He says he's well out of the championship contention.
00:36:24But moving up to fifth place as it stands currently.
00:36:30Kimi Antonelli, meanwhile, by three points, extends his advantage over George Russell.
00:36:37Lewis Hamilton in third, ahead of Lando Norris.
00:36:41The gap between Hamilton and Russell will be 42 points.
00:36:45The gap will be 111 points, isn't it, I think, between Hamilton and Antonelli.
00:36:51Quite a long time even just for the pack to get behind the safety car still.
00:36:58Towards the end of it, maybe halfway around the next lap before they all arrive at the back.
00:37:04And then, as Bernie was saying, let the lapped runners through.
00:37:07They decide to do that, which they tend to.
00:37:11And then we get to racing again.
00:37:14Yeah, so we've got the lead three, but four cars.
00:37:19Because Carlos Sainz is right in the middle of that trio.
00:37:25Then Leclerc and Piastri and Norris.
00:37:29Before those, sorry, Hajar and Hamilton.
00:37:32You're not wrong, Martin.
00:37:33It is going to take a while to get this all sorted out.
00:37:38Yeah, they're sort of half a lap behind some of them, aren't they?
00:37:41The sun is not setting yet, but it has now ticked past six o'clock in the evening here in
00:37:50Malaysia for the Bahrain Grand Prix.
00:37:53And there goes Carlos Sainz, who's able to unlap himself.
00:38:00And the Audi 2 now on the pit straight.
00:38:03You've been really careful when other drivers are weaving that, you know, make contact.
00:38:09So, yeah, 55, 5 and 11, the three cars you mentioned, that can go through.
00:38:18How far back is 11?
00:38:24Sergio Perez has not even caught the pack up yet, so.
00:38:29No, he hasn't.
00:38:30He's around Stroll and Behrman currently on the racetrack.
00:38:35So, two cars have unlapped themselves, but yes, Sergio's going to take at least another lap to unlap himself if
00:38:44he's going at full racing pace here.
00:38:46Yeah, we don't need to be doing this, do we?
00:38:50This is that point in the broadcast, Martin, where you say, why can't they just drop behind the others?
00:38:56Why do they have to unlap themselves?
00:38:58And today, I'm going to agree with you.
00:39:00Yeah.
00:39:01Or, say, in the last ten laps, you don't let them through.
00:39:04They just pull to one side on the grid and let the leaders through instead of the other way around.
00:39:12Because it's, we'd get more racing.
00:39:14Anyway, it's what we've got.
00:39:17Perez is absolutely nowhere near the back of the pack.
00:39:22I think they have to abandon that little overtake and get on with it.
00:39:27Here's a team radio message that we don't often hear from Giampiero Lambiassi to Max Verstappen.
00:39:33And I gather you need to manage your shoulders through five, six, and seven.
00:39:36Just bear that in mind.
00:39:37I'm thinking, does he need a massage?
00:39:39But that could be tyres.
00:39:40Could be the shoulder of the tyre, yes.
00:39:42In fact, I'd be pretty sure it is.
00:39:44Because he then said, the more you push them, the more you save it, the more low-speed grip you
00:39:48have.
00:39:51Isaac Hadjah is asking, any idea where Max may restart?
00:39:55You know, just so you know.
00:39:58Because he...
00:39:58I doubt that's the sort of information they'd want to put out over the radio.
00:40:02Unless they've got a code for it in some way.
00:40:06Just looking, it could be in trouble.
00:40:08Oli Behrman's got nine laps on his tyres.
00:40:10Franco Colopinto's got five laps on his tyres.
00:40:13Everyone else has managed to come into the pits.
00:40:16There is Sergio Perez making his way down the back straight now and unlapping himself.
00:40:23You'll just see him coming into shot.
00:40:24There he is on the main screen as Charles Leclerc lets him go by.
00:40:29So this really should be the last lap behind the safety car.
00:40:33Absolutely.
00:40:34For now.
00:40:38But will it be?
00:40:42Well, let's see.
00:40:44We're on lap 49 of 55 on an eventful afternoon here in Malaysia, in Sepang, where the Bahrain Grand Prix,
00:40:54which is always one of the better Grand Prix's of the year, has come to a new venue this year.
00:41:00And we've had a bit of just about everything.
00:41:03Bernie Collins, what have you got for us?
00:41:04Yeah.
00:41:04So I went back and I listened to the GP message to Max, his re-engineer's message.
00:41:09He definitely says shoulders.
00:41:11He says, I believe you have to manage your shoulders 5, 6, 7.
00:41:15And he hesitated at the word shoulders.
00:41:17And thinking about the rest of the message, I think he's saying manage your tyre temperatures through 5, 6, 7,
00:41:23because he said the more you see of them, the more low-speed grip you have.
00:41:28So I think he's trying to give him the best method of defending to the Mercedes behind by having the
00:41:35grip out of the low-speed corners, having the traction on the straight, and then hopefully being able to defend.
00:41:40So a slight tongue-in-cheek message from the pit wall there, I believe, at Red Bull.
00:41:45He's currently got the driver of the day vote only just from Lewis Hamilton.
00:41:50Here's the thing.
00:41:51They're all going to be concertinaed together.
00:41:54It is not out of the question that Lewis Hamilton could find himself on the podium from fifth with about
00:42:02five laps to go.
00:42:03It is not out of the question that Kimi Antonelli could spring a surprise on Max Verstappen and make his
00:42:08way past.
00:42:08Anything is possible within, you know, the last few laps of racing here.
00:42:15Safety car.
00:42:16We have two strikes so far.
00:42:18We don't need any more.
00:42:19Yeah, but I'm fighting for Stappen as well now.
00:42:23That's not a defence for track limits on a front here, please.
00:42:27So the safety car will do another lap, won't it?
00:42:29Oh, dear.
00:42:31The safety car will...
00:42:34They want Sergio Perez out of the way.
00:42:36Sergio is now making his way to turn four.
00:42:40It's the end of the following lap, isn't it?
00:42:42Once the lapped cars have been let through.
00:42:46Yeah, let them drop back, make the lapped cars drive through the pit lane, you know, whilst the...
00:42:52I don't know.
00:42:53Just find a better way than this.
00:42:56Everyone is on tenterhooks and wants to get going and get racing again.
00:43:01Sergio Perez is well out of the way now, so this should be the last lap.
00:43:06But what's that?
00:43:07George Russell pulling over to the right-hand side.
00:43:10There's a Mercedes pulling over and George Russell's out of the race.
00:43:15And they won't be...
00:43:16Oh, no!
00:43:17Ten years...
00:43:17Oh, and that's Lando Norris off into the gravel.
00:43:21Well, ten years ago, Lewis Hamilton's engine went up in smoke and with it is championship chances.
00:43:28Has history struck twice here in Sepang?
00:43:31This time with George Russell and a power unit issue for him.
00:43:36They can't restart the race, though, with him there.
00:43:39So the safety car will remain out on track while they move that car.
00:43:48George Russell out of the race.
00:43:52Toto Wolff showing no expression whatsoever inside.
00:43:57Both of those drivers, there will be anger and fury at what has happened here.
00:44:04Russell's race over because of a suspected power unit issue.
00:44:10And that is such, such bad luck for the driver from King's Lid.
00:44:16Meanwhile, we saw Lando Norris going off into the gravel.
00:44:20And he's not allowed to make those places up.
00:44:22This is not like the formation lap at the start.
00:44:25That would be overtaking under yellows.
00:44:27And the Aston Martin was actually quite kind to Lando Norris there.
00:44:33Because they were side by side in turn two.
00:44:36So Norris, I'm going to assume he locked his brakes up, trying to warm his brakes up.
00:44:39But the safety car, so when can they get that safety car is down the...
00:44:47I think we've got another lap behind the safety car.
00:44:50Yeah, penultimate straight.
00:44:53So the marshals there by the side.
00:44:56The safety car would have had to have peeled off before now.
00:44:58Right.
00:44:59So he's warming up his tyres and brakes.
00:45:01Lando Norris gets to turn one.
00:45:05Puts his brakes on.
00:45:06And he's taking avoiding action there.
00:45:09There's a car right where he didn't expect it to be.
00:45:12The pack all just backed up.
00:45:14Because of George Russell moving over.
00:45:16I think it was Piastri.
00:45:18I think he nearly smashed into the back of the other McLaren.
00:45:21I think the pack will have seen George Russell.
00:45:24And will have given enough room and respect for him to get out of the way.
00:45:28Which is why they were all going a lot slower than Lando was expecting.
00:45:33What the f***? What happened?
00:45:35We need to diagnose it.
00:45:36But it looks like a P.U. issue.
00:45:40Oh, it's such, such bad luck.
00:45:45You remember Lewis Hamilton with the engine going?
00:45:48Oh, no.
00:45:49He shouted here.
00:45:51And I will know it's happened again, hasn't it?
00:45:53That's kind of finished George off championship-wise, hasn't it?
00:45:58Like I say.
00:45:58Not completely.
00:45:59Not mathematically, of course, by margin.
00:46:01But that's, you know.
00:46:03Well, that was what eventually I think cost Lewis Hamilton that year.
00:46:07There's a safety car coming in at the end of this lap.
00:46:09And I think when the reckoning is finally done this year, that could be what costs George Russell, too.
00:46:15Bearing in mind, we know he's got an engine penalty to come already.
00:46:19He's got an engine penalty, possibly in Austin, with a new power unit he's going to have to take there.
00:46:25Safety car is ending.
00:46:27Right.
00:46:28Lewis Hamilton's quest for a podium has just got a little bit easier.
00:46:31because there's one less car to try and overtake.
00:46:35And bad news for McLaren because Red Bull are not that far behind them in the world championship for third
00:46:41and fourth.
00:46:42Right now, Red Bull are first and third in this race.
00:46:46McLaren are sixth and eleventh.
00:46:48We had him back, didn't we?
00:46:50Two Red Bulls on the podium for the first time since China in 2024.
00:46:55Like the proverbial Milton Keynes bus.
00:46:58You wait years for one of them and then two turn up at once.
00:47:01It could be back-to-back podiums for Red Bull here.
00:47:05With all due respect to Milton Keynes buses, I've waited for a few of them in my time.
00:47:09Max Verstappen will lead the restart.
00:47:12Kimi Antonelli between himself and his teammate Isaac Hadjar.
00:47:18Lewis Hamilton, fourth.
00:47:20Charles Leclerc, then Piastri, Lawson, Alonso up to eighth.
00:47:24Hülkenberg, ninth.
00:47:25Lindblad, tenth.
00:47:26Lando Norris just outside the points currently.
00:47:28And Ferrari right back in this with a sniff of a podium as well.
00:47:32Look at the pair of those beautiful red Ferraris right in the hunt.
00:47:36I don't know what is going to happen between now and the chequered flag.
00:47:39We've had just about everything today.
00:47:41I just would suggest to you sit back, relax and enjoy it if you can.
00:47:46Because Max Verstappen's gone.
00:47:47No one can overtake him before the start-finish line.
00:47:51Behind Charles Leclerc.
00:47:53Piastri wants to get involved.
00:47:54But he's going to have to just bide his time.
00:47:57Verstappen's got a very decent margin.
00:47:59As they now approach the line to start lap 52.
00:48:03Verstappen leads from Antonelli.
00:48:05Then Hadjar.
00:48:06Then Hamilton.
00:48:07Under pressure.
00:48:08Oscar Piastri from Liam Lawson.
00:48:10Who's trying to go around the outside.
00:48:12It's New Zealand and Australia.
00:48:14Battle rejoined.
00:48:15Last time out, Australia won.
00:48:17This time round, has the Kiwi got in front?
00:48:19Well, he has until Piastri gets the inside line here.
00:48:23But Liam Lawson swings around the outside and says,
00:48:26I'll have some of that.
00:48:27Thank you very much indeed.
00:48:29Will hold Piastri off.
00:48:30No, he won't going into turn four.
00:48:33Piastri gets that seventh place, sixth place back again.
00:48:36And look at Lewis Hamilton then homing in once again on Isaac Hadjar.
00:48:41The top two already stretching their legs out front.
00:48:45They've dropped Leclerc a little bit as well.
00:48:47What's happened to Charles Leclerc on this restart?
00:48:49That was the view of Lewis Hamilton chasing Isaac Hadjar.
00:48:53He'll have overtake enabled and available at the end of this lap.
00:48:58Should he stay within one second?
00:49:00He might not need it the way he's putting pressure on Hadjar currently.
00:49:03Verstappen's off into the distance.
00:49:05Antonelli trying to stay with him, but not happening.
00:49:07Then Isaac Hadjar ahead of Hamilton.
00:49:10Leclerc and Piastri.
00:49:11Lawson under pressure from Alonso.
00:49:13Hülkenberg under pressure from Lando Norris.
00:49:16He's managed to get past Arvin Lindblad.
00:49:17And up into the points.
00:49:19Last stroll just behind these.
00:49:21Down the back straight, trying to break the toe.
00:49:24Max Verstappen leads.
00:49:26That's interesting that Max felt the need to do that, isn't it?
00:49:29To try to break the slipstream a little bit there.
00:49:32Unless he was also trying to put some temperature in his tyres.
00:49:35Hamilton's going for it with Isaac Hadjar.
00:49:38He'll get overtake now.
00:49:39An extra half a megajoule of energy.
00:49:41And I don't think Hadjar's got that behind Kimi Antonelli.
00:49:44Here comes Lewis Hamilton.
00:49:46Hadjar's protecting the inside line.
00:49:47Hamilton's gone.
00:49:49And he's up into the podium places.
00:49:51Lewis Hamilton is third in this Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
00:49:55And you can hear what the local fans think about that.
00:49:58They love it.
00:50:00What a race Lewis has had.
00:50:02From absolute chaos and disaster at the beginning on the wrong tyres.
00:50:07It's coming back to him.
00:50:08He's currently on the podium.
00:50:10We can hear that in the commentary box.
00:50:12It's incredible.
00:50:13The crowd cheering.
00:50:15They don't call him the goat for nothing.
00:50:17That was just fabulous.
00:50:18Norris gets past Hülkenberg.
00:50:20And up into ninth place.
00:50:22Driver of the day vote closes this lap.
00:50:24Well, Lewis might just have made a move.
00:50:26That could swing the vote at the last minute.
00:50:29It's nip and tuck between the leader of this race and a man now in third place.
00:50:34Lewis Hamilton.
00:50:36He might yet still try and fancy his chances charging after Kimi Antonelli.
00:50:42Not long to go.
00:50:43Can he make it up and make it second?
00:50:45Can the man in pole beat the man who was on the front row?
00:50:48After everything that we had today, could Verstappen beat Hamilton for a one-two?
00:50:54Who knows?
00:50:55Well, these three started, were due to start in the top three, weren't they?
00:51:00But slightly different order.
00:51:02Lewis Hamilton then.
00:51:04Antonelli hasn't given up on this victory yet either.
00:51:07No, he hasn't.
00:51:08He needs, I think, that overtake.
00:51:10He needs to stay within a second.
00:51:11And he's not currently.
00:51:13Hamilton trying to chase him down through this particular lap.
00:51:18He's been a little bit faster.
00:51:20Mick Doohan, he knows a thing or two about a grandstand finish, waiting to wave the chequered flag.
00:51:25Here comes Charles Leclerc and making the move on Isaac Hadjar.
00:51:29He's not had the best of restarts, has now lost two places to two Ferraris, and he's down into fifth.
00:51:35Ferrari have salvaged a third and fourth out of this race when their cars were running, what, 16th, 17th at
00:51:42one stage.
00:51:42Leclerc might have been even further back than that.
00:51:45We had a massively long pit stop as well, didn't he, for a new nose.
00:51:48But the safety car has sorted that out for them.
00:51:51Lando Norris has been noted for driving erratically with that near miss when the pack were all backed up.
00:51:58But Antonelli can keep Verstappen honest, but not much more than that.
00:52:03Two laps to go, including this one.
00:52:06A third DNF of the season for George Russell with a suspected power unit issue for Alex Albon, a suspected
00:52:15gearbox issue for Valtteri Bottas.
00:52:17It was a seventh DNF of the season as he went off into the gravel.
00:52:21The 19 cars still running, giving us a grandstand finish after the safety car, and it's Max Verstappen who continues
00:52:28to lead.
00:52:29He's got one straight, a hairpin and a lap to go to make it back-to-back wins here in
00:52:36Sepang.
00:52:36Hamilton trying to chase after Kimi Antonelli, but I think the Mercedes has got a bit too much pace.
00:52:41Hadjar's complaining about understeer, and he's got Oscar Piastri within a second of him.
00:52:45Fernando Alonso is currently on to score his and Aston Martin's best result of the season.
00:52:52Their previous best was in Budapest, I think it was.
00:52:56Sorry, Zandvoort, when he finished ninth.
00:52:58Down the main straight we come.
00:53:00Verstappen leads us onto the final lap.
00:53:04They haven't won a race all season.
00:53:07Red Bull and Max Verstappen, 15 races they've gone.
00:53:10They've got one more lap to stop that streak and notch up victory number one of the season.
00:53:16Norris and Alonso.
00:53:17I think Norris has passed Alonso.
00:53:20Not quite.
00:53:21Not quite.
00:53:21Just looking at the driver track, Alonso's got Bayer back in front of him now as it turns up in
00:53:26picture, in picture.
00:53:28Well, we've had everything, haven't we?
00:53:30Rain.
00:53:32We haven't had hail, sleet and snow.
00:53:34We've had rain, drying track.
00:53:37Restarts, more restarts, safety cars, virtual safety cars.
00:53:40Verstappen hasn't led every lap here.
00:53:43But since he got back into the lead, he has looked pretty much untroubled at a track that he's returned
00:53:50to after a nine-year gap.
00:53:53Hoping to pick up where he left off.
00:53:55Well, where he left off, it was win number two of his Grand Prix career.
00:53:59He returns now for what will be win number 72 of his Grand Prix career.
00:54:05Tying that record, that's a total of Michael Schumacher at Ferrari.
00:54:1172 wins with Red Bull for Max Verstappen.
00:54:15It's the longest wait of the season for him in his time at Red Bull for victory number one.
00:54:23He's got one more corner to go.
00:54:25It is the record for the longest gap between victories of the circuit.
00:54:29And it has never looked in doubt, really, this weekend, has it?
00:54:32Max Verstappen, nine years on, rolls back the years, wins in Sepang, wins the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
00:54:40Antonelli and Hamilton complete the podium places.
00:54:43We're watching there.
00:54:44Lando Norris trying to get past Fernando Alonso.
00:54:47He doesn't quite do it.
00:54:49Alonso takes eighth place.
00:54:51Lawson seventh, Piastri sixth and Hadjar fourth.
00:54:53Fifth behind Charles Leclerc.
00:54:55Norris ninth and Arvid Lindblad with the final points place.
00:54:59There's your race winner, Max Verstappen, here in Sepang, untouched.
00:55:05Just like he used to when he was winning the World Championships,
00:55:08he did the fastest lap of the Grand Prix on the last lap.
00:55:12He won 38-2.
00:55:14Yes, Max.
00:55:16What up, mate?
00:55:17Never a doubt.
00:55:18You're the man today.
00:55:2172, mate.
00:55:2272.
00:55:24Amazing job, guys.
00:55:27What a fantastic weekend.
00:55:29That's a really good job, everyone.
00:55:32I'm really proud of myself.
00:55:37Three hours and 21 minutes since this race was due to start.
00:55:43And that was one of the craziest Formula One races I've ever seen.
00:55:47It's been a pleasure spending time with you this afternoon, Martin Brun.
00:55:51That was absolutely wild, wasn't it?
00:55:55We've had dinner dates that have lasted shorter than this.
00:55:59And if I miss my flight tonight, you're getting dinner.
00:56:02Well done, Kimi, P2, mate.
00:56:04Didn't have to pass this car today, but well done to get that.
00:56:08Yeah, thank you, guys.
00:56:11It was difficult today.
00:56:13Congrats to Max.
00:56:14And, yeah, sorry for George.
00:56:17Yeah, that's a real kick in the guts for George and the team.
00:56:20Let's keep pushing.
00:56:21We go again in Singapore.
00:56:23Thanks, man, Kimi.
00:56:25Good damage limitation race again for him, wasn't it?
00:56:28Yeah, though.
00:56:29Like his fifth in Baku last weekend.
00:56:33And he will have, as we were talking about earlier on,
00:56:35he will have increased his championship lead despite not winning the race.
00:56:39Well, and it was going to be three points.
00:56:42He's increased it now by 18 points with George Russell not finishing.
00:56:47Your heart goes out to George.
00:56:48It really does.
00:56:49There's nothing he could do with a suspected power unit issue.
00:56:52Yeah, guys, great job with the mid-stops and calling the strategy there already be well done during the race.
00:57:04I'll see there's more on the table for us today.
00:57:08And I'll ask the question to Bernie Collins, why is Lewis Hamilton not pitting when everybody else did?
00:57:19He was the one that stayed out on his original dry tyres and did a 29-lap stint on the
00:57:26soft tyres that brought him back into contention,
00:57:29saved a pit stop, and eventually Martin earned him a podium.
00:57:32Yeah, it helped all of those that went on the wrong tyres at the start of the race.
00:57:38Obviously, the safety car negated pretty much the gap, except it put them back in a lot of traffic,
00:57:45which hurt them in those earlier phases.
00:57:49But, my goodness, I would struggle to remember all the things that happened in that race, actually.
00:57:54I wouldn't fancy writing a column about it.
00:57:56Which I've got to do.
00:57:57Might be a dissertation by the time you finish this one.
00:58:01How many words do you have to stick to?
00:58:031,500 or something, yeah.
00:58:06Might ask for an extension.
00:58:08No, that was a crazy one, wasn't it?
00:58:11For all sorts of bizarre and unusual reasons in the early stages.
00:58:17We often get asked,
00:58:19what track do you wish that we raced on that we don't?
00:58:24Max Verstappen would probably answer Sepang.
00:58:26We've always answered Sepang.
00:58:28Absolutely love this track.
00:58:30It throws up something every time we come here.
00:58:32And it's thrown up another victory for Max.
00:58:35His first of the season.
00:58:37And he did say it would be nice to finish the year with a win.
00:58:41Was asked about it in a press conference on Thursday, maybe.
00:58:44The journalist that asked it might have known something was in the air.
00:58:49But I would love to come back to Sepang year after year if this is the sort of racing we
00:58:54get.
00:58:55We always had some, yeah, some eventful races here, didn't we?
00:58:58With the rain halfway through the race normally.
00:59:04Kimi Antonelli over to say, well done, too.
00:59:08As ever, wherever Max goes, somebody wants a selfie somewhere.
00:59:13Oscar Piastri, sixth place for him today.
00:59:18Nico Hülkenberg.
00:59:21Sadly for Nico Hülkenberg, through all of the chaos and kerfuffle, he finishes 11th.
00:59:28He finished 11th in Baku as well.
00:59:30That's the ninth time this season an Audi has finished in 11th place.
00:59:34Just outside the points, of course.
00:59:36Yeah.
00:59:38I think, does he hold the record for the most amount of points finishes one place?
00:59:43Most amount of finishes one place outside the points, Nico Hülkenberg.
00:59:47If he doesn't, he's close to it.
00:59:48And he's got to go to the stewards for an unsafe release.
00:59:51Yeah, as potentially has Lando Norris.
00:59:54He's going to be investigated for driving erratically.
00:59:57And that would be when he was weaving down the straight,
00:59:59get some temperature into his tyres and then looked up and,
01:00:01oh, I've got a car right in front of me and went off into the gravel.
01:00:07Very good drive from Lawson in the end to get P7 sort of best of the rest,
01:00:12but even ahead of a McLaren as well.
01:00:15And Alonso then.
01:00:17Best result for the season, for him and for Aston Martin.
01:00:21Yeah, he really drove that hard, didn't he?
01:00:23I mean, Norris had a pretty good go into the last corner, but it wasn't enough.
01:00:28I bet the former teammates were enjoying that.
01:00:32Or be it for Lando Norris, were those issues,
01:00:36be it power unit or be it chassis integration with the power unit,
01:00:39still affecting, you know, his performance in the race.
01:00:43McLaren say that we need to get that fixed and sorted by the time we get to Singapore.
01:00:49I know, I know, it's bad, but...
01:00:54Max was great, yeah.
01:00:57Max Verstappen celebrated, didn't he, his birthday,
01:01:03his 29th birthday.
01:01:06The start, or in the middle of this week, on Wednesday,
01:01:09he might have felt he aged another year during the course of that race.
01:01:13They're made to work hard for it.
01:01:16Yeah, he had it covered all afternoon, they didn't eat, Max.
01:01:20They really did.
01:01:21Through all the different phases of that Grand Prix.
01:01:25He always had the pace.
01:01:28Yeah, in the restart.
01:01:32In the restart at the same...
01:01:33And here he is, Max Verstappen.
01:01:36We've got used to him winning...
01:01:39Weekend after weekend after weekend.
01:01:42But it has taken to round 16...
01:01:45...for him to notch up...
01:01:49...his first victory of the season.
01:01:52His previous wait for a first win in the season with Red Bull was...
01:01:56...also ended at Sepang, wasn't it?
01:01:58Round 15 it was, back in 2017.
01:02:01That's round 16 for this year.
01:02:08It's altogether been a success this weekend, hasn't it?
01:02:11I think so.
01:02:12Other than some of the fans, sadly,
01:02:17taking way longer than it should have done to get home on Friday.
01:02:22Away from the track, yes, it has been a success.
01:02:24And I hope everyone got in on time today and get home on time as well.
01:02:28David Coulthard has grabbed the microphone.
01:02:31We're here with our top two in this Grand Prix.
01:02:34Louis will be joining us very shortly.
01:02:37But Max Verstappen, it's your 72nd victory.
01:02:40And I suspect your sweetest.
01:02:44It's a really nice one, you know, after the year that we've had...
01:02:47...and the progression that we've made.
01:02:48So, yeah, I'm incredibly proud of everyone.
01:02:51And, yeah, it's just super nice to win here.
01:02:54What a complicated race to unpack.
01:02:57We had to be one of the few who made the decision to start on the intermediates.
01:03:02You didn't get off the line well.
01:03:04Mercedes, at that point, were looking strong.
01:03:06Put us in the cockpit, take us on that journey back to winning this Grand Prix.
01:03:09Yeah, it was very hectic with a lot of different things.
01:03:13In the start, no power.
01:03:15So you have to wait for the power to kick in.
01:03:18But then, yeah, we made the right call with the intermediates.
01:03:23And after that, you know, step by step, we moved our way forward.
01:03:27And from there, once we could do our own race until the end again.
01:03:31Of course, with a safety car, but we kept it all under control.
01:03:35Kimi, coming to you.
01:03:37You battled hard.
01:03:38There was many opportunities there, but in the end, Max just had a little bit more pace.
01:03:43But you must be satisfied with that second place.
01:03:45Yeah, I mean, I think today was the maximum we could have done.
01:03:48Of course, massive congrats to Max and Red Bull for the incredible weekend.
01:03:54And on our side, a lot of work to do.
01:03:57Of course, you know, we've been struggling a bit more than usual,
01:04:00but still really, really happy to come away with it too.
01:04:04Your first experience of this Malaysian track.
01:04:06Obviously, we're here celebrating the Bahrain Grand Prix.
01:04:09You enjoyed it?
01:04:11Yeah, it was amazing.
01:04:12And the fans were incredible this weekend.
01:04:14So, thank you so much.
01:04:15And hopefully, we'll come back in the future to Malaysia.
01:04:20Thank you, Kimi.
01:04:21Louis, perfect example of never giving up.
01:04:26You were a minute behind at one point.
01:04:29And you fought through.
01:04:30And this must be a proud third place for you.
01:04:34Yeah, well, thank you, guys.
01:04:37Big congratulations to Max.
01:04:42What a tough race that was.
01:04:44Obviously, we had the wrong call at the beginning, which was so difficult.
01:04:49And I could see everyone just pulling away.
01:04:50And as I could see on the screen, it was a minute down.
01:04:53And I thought that was kind of race over for us.
01:04:56But I just kept my head down.
01:04:57The guys did a great job with the pit stops.
01:04:59Obviously, lots of tire changes, lots of chasing.
01:05:03And honestly, of all the years I've been here, this is the best race we've had here.
01:05:09But particularly because of this crowd.
01:05:10So, big thank you, everyone.
01:05:12Well, congratulations, Louis, on that third place.
01:05:15Max, coming back to you.
01:05:16This is a historical moment for the Red Bull racing team.
01:05:19A few years ago, the late Mr. Mateschitz and, of course, his partner, Mr. Uvita, decided to build their own
01:05:25powertrain.
01:05:26You've now delivered their first victory.
01:05:29It's incredible.
01:05:31I think already, of course, we started.
01:05:33But also, to win our first race in our first year with our own power unit is pretty impressive.
01:05:38Yeah.
01:05:39Well, congratulations.
01:05:40On behalf of Formula One, a big thank you to Bahrain for hosting this Grand Prix in Malaysia.
01:05:45Our top three finishers.
01:05:50Echoing that, thank you to Bahrain for a race here in Malaysia.
01:05:57And the opening round of the season next year.
01:06:00Hopefully back in Bahrain again.
01:06:03And I think DC makes a very good point there as well.
01:06:06The first victory for Red Bull powertrains were these new power units, these new regulations.
01:06:12As a new engine manufacturer in the sport.
01:06:16And, you know, Christian Horner, you know, had a plan, didn't he, when they left Red Bull.
01:06:20Everyone's saying, well, when they left Renault, who are Red Bull going to go with?
01:06:24You know, who's going to supply him an engine?
01:06:25And he had a plan.
01:06:26Actually, we're better off having our own.
01:06:28And it's worked.
01:06:29Yeah, Christian got a very good group of people together to start that project.
01:06:34And these power units are unbelievably complex.
01:06:37So when we saw the problems at the beginning of the race, it appears they might not have been actually
01:06:43from the manufacturers themselves.
01:06:45With the weird situation with the slow starts and the non-starts.
01:06:50But that's a hugely impressive victory for the team, the big team, the overall team, power unit and chassis from
01:07:01Milton Keynes.
01:07:03And so Verstappen, with the victory in the fastest lap, too, on the final lap of the race, as Martin
01:07:11mentioned.
01:07:12And the fans, well, they'll wait around to celebrate the podium finish.
01:07:19And then they'll make their way to the shuttle buses and back again.
01:07:23And I hope we come back here again in the near future, too.
01:07:27It's a super track for racing is Sepang.
01:07:31Herman Tilke's first track that he designed and opened in 1999.
01:07:38Yeah, in a way, I mean, it needs resurfacing, but that would take away some of the challenges, actually.
01:07:43I don't think it does.
01:07:45I think it will do.
01:07:46Tell me, come back here.
01:07:50Okay, you're right.
01:07:52Yeah, I mean, honestly, when I saw you guys on the slicks, I was like, because the track didn't look
01:07:57that wet anymore.
01:07:58But there was still a lot of water in the tarmac.
01:08:01Yeah, that's what I was saying.
01:08:05Oh, yeah.
01:08:06I kept telling them that it was still going to be wet.
01:08:11Hey.
01:08:12Whoa.
01:08:13That was God's sake.
01:08:23Yeah, look at my...
01:08:24Were you in the lead in turn one?
01:08:25Yeah.
01:08:26These guys...
01:08:27I think I could have had a better sight just driving off.
01:08:31Yeah.
01:08:35But then here, I did a mistake also with George.
01:08:38It's tricky, though, like when you're on the inside line there.
01:08:41Oh, that reached out with what, sorry?
01:08:44When we were on the slicks.
01:08:46We got to the slicks.
01:08:48Yeah, it was...
01:08:50Yeah, look, look, here.
01:08:51Oh!
01:08:52Oh!
01:08:53Oh!
01:08:54Oh, Jesus!
01:08:54It was just about!
01:08:55It was just about!
01:08:57Who's you in the third?
01:08:58I've won it in the whole race.
01:08:59Yeah, yeah.
01:09:15Yeah, yeah.
01:09:16I had the new tyres after our Inter stint.
01:09:23You guys were quick at the end there.
01:09:26Straight lines for you.
01:09:27It's crazy.
01:09:28What last time did you do at the end, last lap?
01:09:31What last time were you doing at the end?
01:09:34Love the reaction when Lewis and Max realised it was Kimi that got rid of the bollard.
01:09:42A 1.38.220 was the answer we didn't quite get to from Max.
01:09:47And Kimi, of course, famously can remember from his junior racing his fastest lap times, can't he?
01:09:54Yes, it's a party trick.
01:09:55Yeah.
01:09:57I mean, his party trick might be winning Grand Prix and winning World Championships for years to come.
01:10:01But, yes, he's got a pretty encyclopedic mind in that respect.
01:10:08Terrific effort from Ferrari in terms of strategy and the drives from Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc
01:10:14to recover their way back into this race and strengthen their position second in the championship.
01:10:20They're 151 points behind Mercedes, but quite a long way clear of McLaren.
01:10:27Red Bull, though, catching McLaren fast.
01:10:30McLaren just 18 points ahead now of Red Bull.
01:10:33And don't forget that both cars score points in the Constructors' Championship.
01:10:38So a seventh podium finish for Lewis Hamilton here at Sepang.
01:10:44And the highest finisher today that actually started the race on dry tyres,
01:10:49which we all thought was a really good idea.
01:10:51So we then saw the cars out on the track and quickly realised it was going to take some doing.
01:10:56If anyone could do it, Lewis Hamilton can.
01:10:58And he recovered after dropping back through the field to finish on the podium.
01:11:03Third place today for Kimi Antonelli.
01:11:06It's a lead in the Drivers' Championship.
01:11:0784 points now with seven Grand Prix and a sprint to go.
01:11:11His 13th podium finish this season.
01:11:14He finishes second and for Max Verstappen, driver of the day for the seventh time,
01:11:18but he won't care necessarily about that.
01:11:21What he will care about is that this is victory number one of the season
01:11:25and it has finally come.
01:11:27And it's come here at the track that he won at nine years ago.
01:11:31Red Bull on top of the podium.
01:11:51We await for the Dutch and the Austrian national anthems,
01:11:56which I promise should be played, hopefully will be played.
01:12:06You see, now there's the unofficial Dutch anthem.
01:12:08Da-da-da-da-da Max Verstappen.
01:12:11If you want to join in the words, Martin.
01:12:14Here we go.
01:12:15There we go.
01:12:17There we go.
01:12:26There we go.
01:12:31There we go.
01:12:31There we go.
01:12:37There we go.
01:12:41There we go.
01:12:42There we go.
01:12:42There we go.
01:12:43There we go.
01:12:44There we go.
