00:00Now let's head to the busy eastern Pacific, where Rachel's closing in on Southern California and the Southwest United States.
00:06And you can see Rachel has had somewhat of an open eye, a very large eye structure there.
00:11And the storm has, again, even had a little bit of drier air in the center of it.
00:16But overall, it's still a healthy storm, a tropical storm now.
00:18It has lost a little bit of its wind energy.
00:20Here's the big picture across the East Pacific.
00:22We have two storms.
00:23Both of these will be producing some heavy rain into the Southwest.
00:26We have Tropical Storm Rachel and we have Tropical Storm Simon.
00:29We also, in red, are highlighting a third zone that is likely to organize in the next week.
00:35So before we get into the details, I want to take a big picture look.
00:39We're combining about four days into one map.
00:42And the point here is through Tuesday, we have both moisture from Tropical Storm Rachel,
00:47which is not going to be a tropical storm by the time it reaches far, far northwest Mexico most likely.
00:52But it'll send moisture into the Southwest.
00:54And then, look at this, here comes Tropical Rainstorm by then.
00:57And Simon also, a little bit later in the time frame, bringing more rain.
01:01That's mainly focused into New Mexico.
01:03So it's a one-two punch.
01:05And here we have Rachel that will be making landfall in extreme northwest Mexico,
01:09perhaps still as a tropical storm, around 3 a.m. Sunday.
01:13But by the time it makes it into California, this is what I was trying to communicate earlier,
01:15by the time it actually makes it into Southern California,
01:17we don't expect it to be a true tropical storm by then.
01:20It'll be more of a rainstorm, bringing heavy rain farther north.
01:25So there will be a storm surge associated with this in Mexico.
01:27We won't see that in California, though there will be some rough surf and dangerous waves and so forth.
01:32But look at the rainfall.
01:33And this is just tied to Rachel.
01:35This does not include Simon.
01:38Four to eight inches in some of the high elevations of southwest Utah and western and northwestern Arizona,
01:43but a widespread two to four inches in Lake Havasu City.
01:46Imperial, Flagstaff, Phoenix, one to two inches.
01:47That's a big deal, significant rain.
01:50As this slides northeast, though, upper-level low pressure cools the coast of California.
01:55The heat waves decisively over, snow falling, by the way, up in the northern Rockies at that time.
02:00There will be significant impacts here, but that's just part of the story.
02:03Beyond that, again, we have Simon.
02:05And Simon is still spinning its wheels near the Mexican coast.
02:08This one's going to come north following Rachel.
02:11Another round of rain primarily focused on New Mexico.
02:15The wind's going to be fierce out there in western Mexico.
02:18But rainfall amounts a little more modest.
02:21One to two inches of rain exclusively tied to Simon.
02:23But you throw this into the mix, one storm after the next, it's a big deal for rain in the
02:28southwest.
