00:43labor rights and improve public services in the face of the economic and security crisis
00:48the country is facing.
00:55Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:57I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesource Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
01:01We begin with the news, so stay with us.
01:18High school and university students across France have resumed nationwide protests demanding
01:25increased public education funding despite government promises of an action plan.
01:31The protest movement, as we can see in these live images, were expanded from suburban Paris to
01:37encompass trade unions and university campuses. They have led to the closure of nearly 400 schools
01:45and widespread street barricades. Human rights organizations heavily criticized police tactics
01:51after security forces carried out over 6,600 arrests mostly of minors and deployed explosive
01:59crowd control weapons that left multiple teenagers severely injured.
02:04Prime Minister Sébastien Lecourney condemned the violence in a TV address on Wednesday,
02:11ordering ministers to provide an action plan responding to students' demands by the end of the month,
02:17but protesters remain unconvinced. Demonstrators rejected assurances from Lecourney,
02:23pledging to maintain mobilizations until structural education reforms and resource allocations are granted.
02:37We'll keep up the movement until we're heard, until there's money for public
02:40education. That's what we're asking for, money, funding for our teachers, for our nurses,
02:44our psychologists, our pupils, for suburban secondary schools that are falling apart,
02:48where working conditions are absolutely appalling, which obviously widens inequalities.
02:51And we'll carry on until clear measures are announced openly by the government.
02:58I think Lecourney just said that to try to calm down the sixth formers and everyone,
03:03but he hasn't taken any real measures and he only said it, sort of, to try to calm us. But
03:08in reality,
03:09he's basically trying to find loopholes to get around the problem.
03:17Precisely, Europe is experiencing a wave of work stoppages and protests in the education sector,
03:22due to the lack of public policies and funding, which have aggravated discontent among professionals
03:27and students. This way, several European Union countries have seen demonstrations in opposition to
03:34austerity policies and budget cuts, among them France, Belgium, Spain, Greece and Germany. The main
03:41demands focused on the urgent need for wage increases to cope with the rising cost of living,
03:48while at the same time, opposing reductions in public spending in general and increases in defence
03:54budgets. Protests in Serbia led to the dissolution of parliament and early elections,
04:00elections, while Portugal and Romania also saw protests that led to institutional and operational
04:07paralysis at the national level.
04:17In Italy, the parliament gave final approval to a sweeping electoral reform on Thursday, securing a
04:23political victory for Premier Giorgia Meloni's government, while prompting potential constitutional challenges.
04:29The legislation passed the Chamber of Deputies by 227 votes to 164, replacing the mixed voting system
04:39with a fully proportional model. Premier Meloni's coalition argued that the changes will produce
04:46stable administrations and reduce post-election bargaining by awarding bonus seats to any pre-election
04:54alliance, reaching 42% of the national vote. However, the central-left opposition labelled the legislation
05:02unconstitutional and pledged to challenge it before Italy's constitutional court.
05:15Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed British Prime Minister Andy Burham in
05:21Berlin on Thursday to announce the implementation of a bilateral cooperation treaty. The 27-page document,
05:28known as the Kensington Treaty, was signed in London last year and aims to deepen bilateral cooperation
05:37in defence and economic policy. During their meeting, Chancellor Merz and Prime Minister Burham announced
05:44measures including visa-free travel for student exchanges, collaborative responses to security
05:49threats and a proposed direct rail connection between the two nations. The treaty also outlines joint efforts
05:57to curb irregular migration and combat cross-border crime.
06:09Meanwhile, the Trump administration has refused to invite international election monitors from the OSEE for the upcoming November midterms,
06:18breaking a two-decade democratic oversight practice. For the first time since 2002, observers from the
06:27OSEE will be absent from U.S. Congressional elections following the White House's decision. Rights organizations and opposition lawmakers denounce
06:39the move as an erosion of transparency expressing heightened concern over voter protection as the Justice Department plans to deploy
06:48its own federal agents to polling sites amid record low presidential approval ratings.
07:02And we stay in the United States because U.S. President Donald Trump's latest campaign rally was rocked
07:07by repeated protests on Wednesday as the U.S. President urged Texas voters to back and battle Senate candidate Ken
07:14Paxton.
07:14At least half a dozen demonstrators interrupted the U.S. President during his remarks in San Antonio, with some led
07:22away by police. One was physically assaulted by a senior Trump supporter as he tried to leave the arena. Trump
07:30briefly stepped away from the microphone after one protester appeared to approach the stage. Trump mocked their appearance and claimed
07:40without evidence that they were paid by enemies of the nation.
07:44The president also used Wednesday's rally to address recent comments in which he appeared to suggest that Iran could destroy
07:52Los Angeles or San Diego, earning widespread condemnation from Democrats.

08:42Welcome back to From the South.
08:43On Thursday, Yemeni Armed Forces spokesman, Jaja Saray, announced that a ballistic missile struck King Khalid International Airport in Saudi
08:51Arabia. The missile struck its target accurately and disrupted airport operations in Rijad.
08:58In a statement, Brigadier General Saray said that Yemeni Armed Forces were renewing their warning to international airlines against continuing
09:07to operate flights through Saudi airspace.
09:09In this sense, Jaja announced the Yemeni Armed Forces targeted gatherings and military reinforcements belonging to the Saudi forces at
09:18the Khawwa camp in Ras al-Ara area with ballistic missiles.
09:22His Saudi attacks achieved direct hits, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries, and causing some weapons depots to catch fire.
09:30Yemeni Armed Forces also carried out simultaneous strikes targeting Saudi military gatherings south of Bab al-Mandab, as well as
09:39in the Al-Sakija and Ras al-Ara areas.
09:52Meanwhile, thousands of citizens marched in Turkey's capital, Ankara, in solidarity with Palestine, and demand an end to Israeli attacks
10:00on the creation of a free and sovereign state.
10:03Protesters gathered at the Kokatepe Mosque, in response to a call from social and civil society organizations, in solidarity with
10:11Palestine.
10:12Citizens chanted slogans against Israel and the United States, waving flags and holding banners, with messages denouncing the destruction of
10:21hospitals, schools and other sites in the Gaza Strip.
10:25The protest also called on Islamic countries to coordinate efforts to ensure unrestricted access for humanitarian aid to the Gaza
10:33Strip.
10:42And the United Kingdom announced the cease of activities of its consulate in occupied Jerusalem amid increasing diplomatic tensions with
10:49Israel.
10:50Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Zahar says the UK Consulate in occupied East Jerusalem is ending its activities on Thursday, adding
10:59that it will continue operating under a limited capacity, and the sickness on the consulate building has been removed accordingly.
11:07This comes 30 days after Zahar demanded the consulate closing a month in response to the UK imposing sanctions on
11:16illegal Israeli settlements and banning imported goods made there.
11:20For his part, UK Foreign Minister Ed Milaband says the UK Consulate building in occupied Jerusalem will not be closing,
11:29but will be known as the UK Mission from today,
11:33adding that the UK has temporarily withdrawn several staff and families from the city to ensure their safety and security.
11:50In other information, South Korea announced that it will consider withdrawing its ambassador to Ukraine following the leak of the
11:57confidential transfer of North Korean prisoners.
12:00The government described the apology issued by Kiev as insufficient and is considering withdrawing its ambassador to Ukraine, Park Hee
12:10-Shang, following the public leak regarding the secret transfer of two North Korean prisoners of war to Seoul.
12:17The controversy erupted after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky openly revealed the transfer breaching the confidentiality agreement between the two nations
12:28intended to protect the families of soldiers in North Korea.
12:32South Korean Foreign Minister Sho Jun warned that they will take drastic diplomatic measures, refusing to accept that the incident
12:41was merely a misunderstanding.
12:52And in other topics as well, China has nominated senior health official Song Li to lead the World Health Organization
12:58and succeed Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in 2027.
13:05China's nomination of Dr. Song Li as a candidate for the post reflects China's active willingness to work hand-in
13:11-hand with all parties to jointly advance the building of a community of health for all,
13:14and demonstrates China's firm support for multilateralism and the World Health Organization.
13:19We are confident that should Dr. Song Li be elected Director General of the World Health Organization,
13:24she will help the organization play a more active role in enhancing the health and well-being of all humankind.
13:41In Indonesia, wellfires have swept through South Sumatra, blanketing Plambang in thick haze as firefighters struggle to contain the flames.
13:52A fire erupted in Bank Racine Regency on Wednesday afternoon, stretching firefighters already battling multiple hot spots with limited equipment
14:03and scarce water supplies.
14:05The flames spread through vegetation, causing thick smoke across the landscape and vehicles travelling through haze-covered streets,
14:13with boats and bridges barely visible along the Moosey River.
14:16The fires have taken a heavy toll on public health, with Plambang's Health Office recording 17,434 cases of acute
14:27respiratory infections in September.
14:29More than 895,000 hectares have reportedly burned across Indonesia in 2026,
14:35making it the country's worst wildfire season in years, with severe drought fueling the devastation.

15:31Welcome back to From the South.
15:33Social organizations in Ecuador are calling on President Daniel Lobo's government to guarantee labor rights
15:40and improve public services in the face of the economic and security crisis the country is facing.
15:46Among the main demands are job security, decent work and wage policy in line with the rising cost of living.
15:53Civil society organizations are also calling for improvements in healthcare, education and social security,
16:00as well as respect for labor rights and union autonomy.
16:04The organizations are defending national resources and rejecting the concession of the Sasha oil field,
16:11while questioning the country's growing debt to the International Monetary Fund.
16:25Also, Argentine police have violently evicted university students occupying the Education Secretariat in Buenos Aires,
16:32following protests against federal budget freezes.
16:35Hundreds of students occupied the Pizurno Palace in a peaceful sit-in,
16:40demanding implementation of the university financing law previously upheld by courts against executive suspension decrees.
16:48After education authorities refused to address demands over frozen budgets, faculty wages and student aid,
16:55federal security forces deployed tear gas to clear the building.
16:59Student unions denounced the repressions and called for a massive national university march on October 15th,
17:07alongside rural and disability rights organizations.
17:26And the 176 economic and social reforms approved by Cuba have a direct impact on foreign investment.
17:34Regulatory procedures are being simplified, new sectors are being opened up,
17:38and the access to property is being expanded.
17:41Our correspondent, Evelyn Leyva, has more details.
17:46The package of 176 reforms boosts foreign investment.
17:50For the first time, partnerships between national private entrepreneurs and foreign capital are permitted.
17:55Private companies will be able to engage in direct foreign trade without intermediaries.
18:00Cuba seeks to attract foreign currency and technology in a context marked by the U.S. blockade.
18:04The possibility for private entrepreneurs to form partnerships with foreign capital could be a path
18:11that leads to interesting growth dynamics.
18:13We believe this is an important development that will generate momentum in the economy.
18:18The opportunity for private companies to engage directly in foreign trade
18:22will simplify many administrative procedures and bureaucratic processes.
18:29For these measures to be successful, the country needs foreign currency
18:33and must expand the production capacities of its supply chains.
18:36Cuba needs foreign currency.
18:39If we need fuel, we need access to technology, we need access to sources to purchase certain inputs
18:44that are not produced in Cuba, who's going to do it?
18:47It has to be the Cuban business community.
18:49And the Cuban business community today is made up of all actors in economy,
18:53whether private or state-owned, and that is one of the major transformations recently approved
18:58by the National Assembly, which we must now implement.
19:03The new portfolio of opportunities presented by the Cuban government
19:07includes 426 investment projects throughout the country,
19:10with a total value exceeding $30 billion.
19:13The most well-represented sectors are oil, tourism, the sugar industry, food production,
19:18biopharmaceuticals, general manufacturing and mining.
19:21The challenge is not only to attract capital,
19:23but also to bring projects to fruition and foster regional development.
19:28When there are many aspects to consider in transformations but few solutions,
19:34then you have to support it with regulations, with initiatives,
19:38even with development funds and financing,
19:40so that municipalities can get off the ground on their own.
19:46The Cuban business community is also preparing for the new landscape.
19:50For Cuba, the Export Promotion Office identifies market knowledge
19:53as the main challenge for domestic producers to successfully enter foreign trade.
20:00To export, you have to be prepared.
20:02You often have to redesign the concepts behind the products and services,
20:05and you have to understand how it all works,
20:08not only the regulations governing foreign trade,
20:10but also how the markets where we want to sell those products function.
20:13So I think that is the main challenge.
20:15With these transformations, Cuba is committed to involving all economic actors
20:21in attracting foreign investment.
20:23The numbers show progress, but they also highlight the challenges ahead,
20:26turning projects into productive realities
20:28and ensuring that resources reach the municipalities.
20:52In Peru, archaeologists from the National University of Trujillo
20:56are discovered in the Huacas, the Moshe complex,
20:59the tomb of a possible child from the Moxica culture,
21:03buried with around 32 vessels as offerings.
21:06The burial is located in a funerary area of the Ule platform,
21:11next to the Huaca de la Luna,
21:13one of the great adobe temples erected by the civilian civilization,
21:18between ad 100 and also 850.
21:24The director of the Huacas de Moshe archaeological project,
21:28Carlos Rengifo, explained that the excavation is not yet complete,
21:34and also that among the pieces,
21:36those depicting captives on their way to a ritual stand out,
21:40such as skulls and limbs of camelids.
21:43Carlos Rengifo deemed it exceptional that the child was buried
21:48with a metal mask and fine ceramics,
21:50a sign that he came from a privileged sector of Moxica society.
22:02Also on Thursday, Canadian poet Anne Carson
22:05was announced as the recipient of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature.
22:10The new permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, Ingrid Carlbeck,
22:15stated Carson was selected for her bold and inventive over
22:19that in playful dialogue with the classical tradition
22:24has created new forms of contemporary literature.
22:28Born in 1950 in Toronto,
22:30Carson earned a PhD in classics
22:33and has taught at a number of universities
22:35throughout her decades' long career.
22:38A poet, classicist, and translator
22:41among her works stands out
22:43titles such as Plain Water,
22:45Ron Norma, The Beauty of the Husband,
22:48and Jen Ra Crossing, Autobiography of Red.
22:51Carson becomes only the 19th woman
22:54to win the Nobel Prize for Literature
22:56with recent winners including
22:58Han Kang in 2024
22:59and Annie Ernox in 2022.
23:07I consider her to be an excellent author of our times in many ways.
23:15But the way she writes is very original.
23:21Nobody writes like her.
23:23And I think the reason for that is
23:26she comes from Latin and Greek studies.
23:30She comes from the academia.
23:32And that's not very often that somebody starts being academic
23:36and then starts to write this prose and fiction that she does.
23:43And with this information,
23:45we have come to the end of this news brief.
