Surgical mission offers free cleft surgeries in Cebu

Forty-five patients born with cleft conditions are set to receive free cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries in Cebu this October through a surgical mission by Operation Smile Philippines. Watsons Philippines is supporting the mission as part of its goal to facilitate 185 free cleft surgeries this year, matching its 185th anniversary. The partnership with Operation Smile began in 2013 and is expected to reach 2,689 surgeries by the end of 2026. The program also provides speech therapy, nutritional assistance, transportation, accommodation and other support to patients and their families, with patients coming from Cebu and other parts of the Visayas.

00:00We have different programs running simultaneously while we're here.
00:04The Manila Center is also working other areas, other sites.
00:08So there's really a lot of opportunity to keep working with Watson.
00:12In fact, we're looking forward to continuing this partnership with them.
00:15Because from here on, cleft care continues.
00:19In fact, what we have seen yesterday, we had a lot of patients come here from different areas.
00:24And today, despite this just being a walk-in opportunity for possible patients, there are still a lot of people
00:31who came.
00:32So that means that their work really doesn't stop.
00:34The service to be provided will never end, in a sense.
00:38And that's why the partnership with Watson's can still continue beyond this week.
00:41In fact, that's the plan that we keep on working together.
00:45Because even cleft care that we offer here in Operation Smile for the Beast is really not just a one
00:50-time thing.
00:51It's not just the surgery.
00:52We also provide speech therapy, nutritional assistance, and even assistance to the families.
01:00Because it really takes a village to form the children, to help the children beyond the surgery.
01:06So the partnership is really going to go on and on and on.
01:10Because we believe that Watson's is also one with us in that desire.
01:15So we are doing a total of 185 surgeries this year.
01:21And that is aligned with actually the 185th anniversary of Watson's as a company.
01:28So we really wanted to be able to stretch the number of patients that we can help.
01:35So by the end of the year, we're looking at being able to have done 2,689 surgeries.
01:43So imagine almost 3,000 children also have been transformed, I guess, in a way, know their lives through the
01:54partnerships that we've had.
01:57So that's a little bit about what we've been doing.
02:01And we're very excited to finally be here in Cebu and have that mission here.
02:07Because it's also our first time in this beautiful facility of operations.
02:17Just a follow-up question from what you've told us, ma'am.
02:22You mentioned that employees are volunteering.
02:28So with that, how have this experience shaped the way your people view community engagement?
02:35And Watson's roles in supporting Filipino families?
02:39Hmm. Okay. So for that one, I think Ms. Adele and I were actually having a discussion about this.
02:47Maybe on my side, what I can share is that we talk to our volunteers after they've experienced the missions.
02:56And we really see that this is a way for them to enrich themselves outside of work.
03:01When we're so busy at work, it's like we're so focused.
03:05Like, no, I need to do well in my work, in the store, ganyan.
03:13But opportunities like this allow them to ground themselves and again realize,
03:19oh nga pala, what we're doing here is bigger than what I'm doing in the store.
03:25So I think that's a way to extend the experience beyond just work, but medyo holistic na yung approach.
03:34And I think Ms. Adele also has something to add.
03:37And I think, though, for operations people, every day they're in the store.
03:41You're not just talking to the store, but even like, now you have that experience.
03:44Just hearing their stories, what they went through.
03:46And it makes them grounded.
03:48And you'll also realize that in this kind of service, really genuine care for people, really what matters.
03:56And it resonates to them because some of our volunteers are part of themselves.
04:00So they have that feeling of, I should be more empathetic with our customer.
04:04And just, not just doing the usual service, it goes beyond that.
04:09And that's the kind of culture that they wanted to really impart.
04:14We care, we truly care.
04:16Not just talking to the culture, but really a genuine care.
04:20And for them to realize that this is our purpose of really, really to care for our customer
04:25and to be able, in our own little way, help customers and even children with like this.
04:32And that's something that they wanted to impart for our team.
04:36In relation to that, what makes this kind of partnership particularly meaningful for WhatsApps
04:42and its teams here and so on?
04:44Yeah, it's really meaningful because it's very much unlike with our workshop, putting a smile
04:49on our customers and faces.
04:51And as we've worked with the OSX.
05:05Let's have a look.
05:22Let's go to the OSX.
05:25You
