In 2019, internet researchers uncovered a stunning historical photograph from 1898 that quickly went viral across social media. The archival image, captured during the Klondike Gold Rush in the Yukon territory of Canada, shows three children operating a gold mine rocker. The young girl in the foreground shares an uncanny resemblance to modern Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.

From her facial features to her intense gaze and braided hair, the likeness was so striking that playful internet theories emerged claiming Thunberg had traveled back in time to stop industrial pollution before it started. Many assumed the image was an elaborate Photoshop hoax.

However, historians confirmed the photo is entirely authentic. It is officially preserved within the University of Washington Libraries Special Collections, originally taken by Swedish American photographer Eric A. Hegg. While the resemblance is astonishing, the girl was simply an unnamed child from the late nineteenth century, demonstrating the rare and fascinating phenomenon of historical doppelgangers.
