00:00Hi, new Jones and Keith here on W.E.E.I.
00:03That's Teddy Bruschi talking Drake May money shots, apparently.
00:07Oh, I know that was loud on.
00:09Get up.
00:10We are on Sirius XM now.
00:13Anything goes.
00:15Teddy must have known that he must have a good feel for that.
00:18But I do agree.
00:20Drake May looks like he's back.
00:22Swagger back in this way.
00:24We hadn't seen that Drake May all year until we saw it on Sunday.
00:27So in that way, he looks back.
00:30I think it's dangerous to say he's all fixed.
00:33He's 100%.
00:34A caller asked us yesterday, Keith, 0-93.7.
00:37What was our confidence level?
00:39We were both in the 70s.
00:41The needle has tilted way back towards believing in Drake May.
00:45But it's not pinned all the way back.
00:48Because while I put a lot of weight and a lot of stock in a win over Buffalo,
00:51that is a bad defense.
00:53And it is only one game.
00:54And it is the NFL.
00:55And good teams beat bad teams.
00:58Quarterbacks show out.
00:59And we're going to talk to Curran in the 1 o'clock hour.
01:01He's pointed out.
01:02Mack Jones even had a good game against Buffalo in his final year as a starter
01:05where he led a victory against the Bills.
01:08I think they were worse off at that point.
01:10I want to say they were like 2-5 versus this team leveling out their record.
01:14But I understand the point.
01:15Like, anybody can have a good day.
01:17So I'm not all the way back fully believing in Drake May again.
01:21But I do think this performance washes out a lot of those first three.
01:25You don't totally forget about it.
01:28And I wonder what changed.
01:30Might just be the Bills are a good matchup for him.
01:32It's bad defense.
01:32It might be that he just had his one day.
01:35And he'll go right back to turnovers biting him in the ass.
01:38But I think there's a couple of factors in turning it around.
01:41One, Greg Bedard got into belief in the weapons and not moping around and feeling sorry for himself.
01:47Without A.J. Brown, I think that's a factor.
01:49And I would credit the coaching staff, Keefe, for being more aggressive this week and letting, as you like to
01:54say, letting Drake bake.
01:56Yeah.
01:57And I thought that was lacking.
01:58I thought they were far too conservative.
02:00Certainly the first two weeks, maybe the Jaguars game because it was such a beatdown is harder to tell.
02:04I thought they were far too conservative.
02:06Had the governor on Drake May.
02:09And I think once they took that off, yeah, he's still loose with the football.
02:12But at least he looked like himself.
02:13And the team looked like the Patriots from a year ago.
02:15Yeah, I think the first drive had so much to do with it.
02:18I mean, they got backed up on their own three.
02:20First, we thought, just watching it, that they weren't going to have the ball, right?
02:24We thought Marcus Jones fumbled.
02:25And then you're like, nope, they do have the ball.
02:27They got it on their own three.
02:28I think it was the second play was like a 15-yard scamper by Drake May.
02:32So you're like, all right, they're moving the ball.
02:34They already picked up a first down.
02:35He had to feel pretty good about that.
02:37And then on that drive, he hit like five different receivers.
02:41I think both tight ends caught a pass.
02:43Mack Hollins caught a pass.
02:44Obviously, Romeo Dobbs had a couple, including the touchdown.
02:47And so first quarter, you're like, we just went 97 yards, scored a touchdown, went forward on a fourth down.
02:53That had to give him all kinds of confidence.
02:55Like that was better than almost anything they did the first three weeks combined.
02:59And then from that point on, you knew you were facing Josh Allen on the other side.
03:03He also knew that's a team and a place.
03:06Well, not that exact stadium, but that's a road game that he's won in the past.
03:11So I think it gave him so much confidence in that first drive.
03:14And then they kept up with that.
03:16He was throwing to all the different receivers.
03:18They were making some plays for him, which obviously is going to help quite a bit.
03:22And I think McDaniels and Vrabel overall called a better game, had a better, just like more aggressive philosophy, which
03:30I think Drake May fed off of.
03:31Yeah.
03:32And I don't think we just do this after wins and losses.
03:34Like, oh, they won.
03:35And good for Vrabel, good for McDaniels.
03:37They called a better game.
03:38You could see the difference.
03:39Oh, they lost.
03:40They called a bad game.
03:41I don't think we do that.
03:42I don't think we came in after the Pittsburgh game and were like, oh, they called a great game.
03:46I thought they were ridiculously conservative in that game.
03:49And again, especially the Seattle and Steelers games.
03:52I think they were too conservative on offense.
03:54And they looked at what was across from them and they said, Aaron Rodgers can't beat us.
03:58Drew Locke, the backup to Sam Darnold, can't beat us.
04:00We're going to try to win these games on defense.
04:02And it worked in the Steelers game.
04:04It worked in the AFC title game a year ago.
04:06It did not work against Seattle.
04:08The Jaguars ran them off the field.
04:10So I think this is the first time they really opened it up for Drake.
04:14They were aggressive.
04:17And maybe they straightened him out mentally and that they felt like they could really open it up because now
04:22they trusted Drake mentally, Keefe.
04:24But I thought the way they handled the Seattle game, they still deserve a lot of blame for that.
04:28But Vrabel deserves a lot of blame for that, for the way I think he nudged Josh McDaniels to call
04:34it.
04:34And then McDaniels had some terrible play calls in that game.
04:37But that's how you started the year, trying to win 10-3 against Sam Darnold or 13-7 or something
04:43like that, some low-scoring game.
04:45And you made it a lower-stakes game where if you're up a couple of touchdowns, a turnover matters a
04:51hell of a lot less than it does in a one-score, low-scoring game.
04:54And I think they dumbed it down too much.
04:56And Drake screwed up completely in the fourth quarter.
05:00He deserves blame for that.
05:01But I think the coaching staff kept that game close and then May lost it.
05:05And I didn't think they needed to keep that game close.
05:07First, I want to see them call it more like they did on Sunday.
05:10And I guess my remaining question is, are they going to do that every week or was that just a
05:16Buffalo thing?
05:17That I don't know.
05:18I don't know.
05:18I would love to say that it is going to be more teams than not.
05:22But I don't know.
05:23A couple weeks you're going to play the Jets.
05:26Your mentality against the Jets probably should be a little bit different than the Bills.
05:28How many points are the Jets going to score?
05:30Seven?
05:31I don't know.
05:31How many plays are they going to run?
05:33So like 30 plays last week.
05:34So maybe, you know, fourth and four, let's call it.
05:38And you can either kick a 35-yard field goal or you can try to pick up the four yards.
05:42Against the Jets, you might be kicking that field goal.
05:43Here's the other thing that maybe Vrabel was aggressive.
05:46Maybe they just don't trust Boreal Dallas.
05:48Like that's the other part to it as well.
05:50That's another one.
05:50You missed the field goal inside of 40.
05:52Oh, you can't leave points on the board.
05:54What's a guarantee?
05:54This guy's going to kick his field goals.
05:55Are those points.
05:56So like maybe that's something we're missing in the approach.
05:59We're all like, oh, they just wanted to keep up with Josh Allen.
06:01Maybe they don't trust the kicker.
06:02But also, I do think they trust Drake May quite a bit.
06:05And, you know, some would argue, well, they should.
06:07It's like, well, the first three weeks, it didn't necessarily have that feeling.
06:10I even think the very last possession they had is further evidence that they're, oh, and
06:16they were putting it in Drake's hands and throwing it.
06:18Good point.
06:18Because even the first.
06:19That has nothing to do with the kicker.
06:21That's just, we trust Drake.
06:22That's a good point.
06:22And so they ran the ball the first down.
06:24Bills call a timeout.
06:25Second down, they throw an incomplete pass.
06:27And you're like, oh.
06:27I go, that's dumb.
06:28Yeah.
06:28What are they doing?
06:30And then third, they throw it again.
06:33And this time, Hunter Henry picks it up.
06:35And then that seals the game.
06:36But they were like, we're probably not going to pick it up on the ground right here.
06:39We don't want them to call two timeouts and then punt it back to Josh Allen.
06:43We're going to put the ball in the hands of the guy that has thrown seven interceptions
06:47already this season and has fumbled however many more times.
06:50We're going to put it in his hands twice.
06:51I think his fumble streak is like high.
06:55Has he fumbled in every game this year?
06:56Is it like a Cal Ripken-like streak?
06:57Like, more impressive, Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak or Drake May's fumble streak?
07:02He didn't fumble against Seattle.
07:03Did he?
07:06Did he put it on the ground?
07:07Was it just the three picks?
07:07I thought maybe he put it on.
07:08I was thinking it was just the three.
07:09Or like fumbles or fumbles lost?
07:11Yeah.
07:11No, I think it's not fumbles lost.
07:14But I do think, I thought he might have fumbled in that game.
07:17Maybe I have that wrong.
07:17I can look it up.
07:18Whatever it is.
07:19Even if he took the Seattle game off, it's quite a streak.
07:22It's not like Eric Miller mixed in a good outing.
07:25Maybe it's like that, where he doesn't fumble the football.
07:27But that's so alarming.
07:28That's disconcerting.
07:29There's no doubt about it.
07:31But, no, I think for every, and there is like a knee-jerk reaction to give Rabel and
07:35by proxy McDaniels a lot of credit.
07:38And I didn't fumble the first two games.
07:39He did not in either of them.
07:40I thought he did in the Steelers game.
07:41No, he had 0-0-2 and then three.
07:44Huh.
07:45Because of the two snaps, they ruled as fumbles.
07:48But he's fumbled five total times, though, this year, right?
07:50Yep.
07:51They played four games.
07:52Yeah, maybe I'm just thinking of a turnover.
07:54Maybe it's a turnover streak then.
07:55It's not just fumbles.
07:56Oh, so you're right.
07:56It was 0-0-2-3.
07:58All right, strike that from the record.
08:00But when it comes to Drake, he has turned it over way too much.
08:03There's a knee-jerk reaction to give Rabel and McDaniels a bunch of credit, which I'm
08:07willing to do.
08:07But I think you equally need to say, but what the hell were they doing the first three
08:11weeks?
08:12Yeah.
08:12Where they had things buttoned down and way too conservative.
08:16You have the MVP runner-up.
08:17You have a playmaker.
08:19And yeah, he played horribly in that fourth quarter, but you already put the restrictor
08:24plate on him way before.
08:25You were already keeping his hands at 10-2 prior to that.
08:29And I think if you want to give him credit for this week, that's fine.
08:31They deserve it.
08:32Yeah.
08:32They deserve a lot of blame for how they handled it the first three games.
08:35I felt like we were doing that.
08:36And so this is the difference.
08:37You know, Chad Tracy just doubling down on a bad decision in the playoffs, whereas the
08:42Patriots at least kind of snapped out of it.
08:44And we're like, all right, we have to do things a little bit differently.
08:47And this week is going to be an interesting test case, because before the season, you
08:51would have said, oh, the Raiders scored 20 points.
08:54You're going to beat the Raiders.
08:54Yeah.
08:54I would have thought.
08:55I thought Mendoza might be in there by now.
08:57Not so fast.
08:58No.
08:58Like, they're three and one.
08:59We have on the fake good tier on our, on our tiers that are up at Jones and Keefe.
09:03I was making a soft argument to move them up a little bit more.
09:06Move them up.
09:06They do have some playmakers.
09:08They got some guys.
09:09So you're like with, especially with Brock Bowers, these last two weeks.
09:13Yeah.
09:13That might be a team.
09:14You better be going forward on some fourth downs.
09:15He better be not settling for field goals.
09:17Reese wrote a cover him at all last year.
09:19Bowers.
09:19Yeah.
09:20Over a hundred yards for week one last year.
09:22They're good against tight ends this year, but I don't know.
09:24Yeah.
09:24I forgot he was even healthy.
09:25And that was so long ago.
09:26The guy had barely played last year.
09:27Yeah.
09:28That's a good point.
09:28I forgot about that.
09:29So no Reese wrote about this today.
09:32The Patriots limited Kincaid, which, which is a big win for them.
09:34Kincaid.
09:35Yeah.
09:35He did nothing.
09:36A good player.
09:36He did one catch for seven yards.
09:38Are they going to be able to limit this guy?
09:40I don't think so.
09:40I mean, if they do, then they really, they really can clamp down on tight ends.
09:44I don't know if they can limit this guy.
09:46No, but I don't think anybody really can.
09:48So then it's like, who's the other guy?
09:50They got like Trey Tucker.
09:51Oh, they don't have, I mean, it's all those guys.
09:53It's Gentie Bowers mayor.
09:55Honestly, their second tight end is getting some work in this year.
09:58So it might be that Kirk Cousins, you know, classic Kirk Cousins.
10:02He can like look terrible for a quarter, then look unbelievable the next.
10:06So, yeah, but I don't, I don't think they score points.
10:09Exactly.
10:09I don't think this is going to be an easy game, but that's not even the point you're trying
10:12to make, you're saying, all right, are they going to keep the offense opened up or are
10:17they going to try to win a low scoring game?
10:18You've got to push it.
10:19Vegas in these games, 27, 26, 35, 27 and a loss against Kansas City.
10:25Yeah.
10:25Like that's a team you're going to have to keep up with.
10:27So hopefully offense, all of a sudden they keep their foot on the gas.
10:30Tom Brady's got his little imprint on that squad.
10:32You know, people want to blame Brady for last year.
10:34I guess we could give him a little credit for this.
10:35Kubiak looks like a good hire.
