00:00Patriots beat the Dolphins 33-27 yesterday in Miami.
00:05First win of the year.
00:07First win for Mike Vrabel in New England.
00:09First win in Miami since 2019.
00:13Drake May really good.
00:14Only four in completions.
00:1519 out of 23, 230.
00:18Couple of darts, Keith.
00:19Darts and scampers.
00:20One scamper from six yards out.
00:22He had 10 carries for 31 yards.
00:24I know a lot of people don't want to see him run.
00:26I think those people are wrong.
00:27Yeah, they clearly are.
00:28And I think yesterday is an example of that.
00:30It's the most comfortable he's looked.
00:31And part of it was, I think he knew he could scoot a little bit.
00:34And I think some people don't want him to run.
00:36I don't know if they're envisioning something that no one's really asking.
00:40Like, hey, tuck the ball.
00:41Like, smash mouth football.
00:43Or like, no.
00:44Just when it's there, take it.
00:46Take the extra yards.
00:47Don't just, like, lay down and try to live for another play.
00:49And he's clearly athletic enough to do it.
00:51He absolutely is.
00:52Yeah, he definitely is.
00:54But I also think his confidence goes up.
00:56Like, I think he feels better doing it that way.
00:58I think a lot of, you know, the success he had in North Carolina was being kind of more
01:02of like that dual threat type of quarterback.
01:04And he's just probably more in, I don't know.
01:07He just, he felt like a much different quarterback week to week.
01:11And part of it was how he was using his legs.
01:13I heard Phil Perry after the game on NBC Sports Boston.
01:16I thought he had a good observation about a comment that May made after the game.
01:21He's like, Miami's in a ton of zone coverage.
01:24The reason they're in zone defense is because of the threat with his legs.
01:27They don't want to turn their backs.
01:29They don't want to let Drake May run while they have their backs turned to the line of
01:32scrimmage.
01:33And he's picking up easy chunk yardage.
01:35His running changes the way the Patriots are defended.
01:38And I think that makes a massive difference.
01:40He's a guy you have to account for as opposed to just a dead duck back there.
01:44It makes the offense more dynamic.
01:46I think you saw it on the play to Ramondre.
01:48The threat of him running and rolling out to his right and hucking it downfield and going
01:51through his progressions.
01:53That's Drake May when he's at his best.
01:54I think that's the best singular play he's made in a Patriots uniform.
01:58And you said it's the best game he's played.
02:00Yeah, definitely the best game he's played.
02:02And even if you don't like the quarterback rating number, his quarterback rating was almost 30
02:06points higher than his best game from a year ago.
02:08So just like another metric to sort of prove to you like just how good he was only four
02:13incompletions on 23 passes.
02:14So he was incredibly efficient, three turnovers.
02:16And with him, maybe the most important thing, no turnovers, no fumble, you know, didn't throw
02:22that pick, you know, late in the game or anything like that.
02:24He was excellent.
02:25And real quick, because you mentioned it, the play to Ramondre Stevenson.
02:29How about that catch too?
02:30Incredible.
02:30That was incredible hands catch for anyone.
02:33Nevermind a running back.
02:34No, in a big running back, they were talking about on the broadcast, like that's a big
02:37running back going down the field, extending his hands, 55 yard gain and holding on to
02:42the ball.
02:42Cause you have all these defenders come and throwing their, their arms in there at the
02:46end.
02:46We know Ramondre has dropped the ball in the past.
02:48So he also, I'm not going to go as far as to say it was his best game, but he had a
02:52great game.
02:53Ramondre Stevenson.
02:53Yeah.
02:54He's had games in the past where he's like ran all over teams, but like this was, this
02:58was great to see.
02:59I did not expect whatever it was 88 yards receiving from Ramondre Stevenson.
03:03In fact, he'd be the third back out of the three that you'd expect to have that kind
03:06of receiving game, but he was excellent.
03:08Football talk on WEI presented by Paramount plus Sylvester Stallone back in the original
03:13hit series.
03:14Tulsa King, Keith, this season, Dwight is facing his most dangerous adversaries yet, which is
03:20saying something, forcing him to fight for everything he's built to protect his empire.
03:24You can stream the new season of Tulsa King Sunday, September 21st.
03:28So this Sunday exclusively on Paramount plus check it out there.
03:32We asked the question, has Drake may turn the corner?
03:35And I saw Twitch chat, right?
03:36When we asked the question, they're like, boy, we've gone from, is his plate too full
03:39that has he turned a corner really fast?
03:42Well, yeah.
03:43I mean, he looked like garbage week one.
03:44I mean, yes, we did pivot quickly.
03:48We're giving him credit for how he played this week and criticizing him for how he played
03:51last week.
03:52I do think McDaniels changed something, so I think there's more to, did they overload him
03:56week one?
03:58Did they let him be himself week one?
03:59I definitely still think there's something to that narrative, and I think they switched
04:02it.
04:03Do you think he turned a corner yesterday?
04:05He definitely looked a lot more comfortable.
04:07I do think that the team helped him out a great deal, and whether you want to credit
04:12McDaniels or Ramondre Stevenson or the offensive line, because they were able to run the ball
04:18effectively and then play from in front, I'm not taking credit away from Drake May, but
04:23I'm just saying, like, that is the script for any quarterback to have a successful day,
04:27right?
04:27Like, what, he had the lead most of the time that he had the ball?
04:31Like, that's pretty good, and they were able to gain, what did they gain per carry in the
04:36game?
04:36It was something like...
04:374-2?
04:37Yeah, so, like, you'll take that, right?
04:38Because that certainly wasn't what it was the week before.
04:41Ramondre was almost at five yards a carry.
04:44Gibson was over five, right?
04:46You know, some of Drake May's runs that actually brought the team total down.
04:48Yeah, it's true.
04:48Drake was 10 for 31, so yeah, he brought the average down for sure, yeah.
04:52Oh, it was those kneels at the end.
04:53Oh, good point.
04:53Oh, there's also that.
04:54But I also think, like, yeah, he was incredibly confident, and so to get a game like that
04:59under your belt, to go into Miami, where even Tom Brady struggled in Miami, and to get
05:04a win, that obviously has to help, but now we just need to see it snowball, and, like,
05:08does he have more games?
05:09He's not going to play every game like that, but now that he has that one under his belt,
05:12you know, what are the chances it can lead to another one and another one?
05:14So, Drake May, after the game, talked about Mike Vrabel getting his first victory for
05:20the Patriots.
05:20Here's what he had to say about his head coach.
05:22Yeah, that's awesome.
05:23You know, just rallying around coach, how much he cares about us, how much of a player's
05:26coach he is.
05:27I took that football, the one I need there, and gave it right to, you know, stick or
05:31equipment guy, and let coach get that ball, so that means a lot, and I think it meant
05:35a lot to him.
05:35So, you know, it took everybody, but, you know, obviously, he's leading the charge, and
05:39that meant something special.
05:41They have stick?
05:42He gave it to stick.
05:43They have stretch?
05:44Yeah.
05:44They have the Milkman.
05:45It's hard to keep track.
05:46It's hard to keep track of all the nicknames.
05:48That is true.
05:49If you want to read into anything, and I think you have a take on Vrabel and how he's kind
05:53of handling some of these personalities on the team, Vrabel handed out game balls after
05:58the game?
05:58May didn't get one.
05:59Like, Borgallis got one.
06:01Shouldn't have.
06:02The Milkman got one.
06:03Yeah, he deserved it.
06:04Marte Mapu got one.
06:06Gibson and Ramondre Stevenson got them.
06:08May didn't.
06:08Is there anything to read into there where it's like, hey, man, this is what we expect
06:12out of you?
06:12Yeah, maybe a little bit.
06:13Yeah.
06:14And I think, you know, every good coach can't coach every single player the same.
06:19Like, I think you have to know which guys need to be built up a little bit more, which
06:22guys need the motivation and all that.
06:24And for somebody that has just plopped in, you know, has known these guys less than a
06:28year, you got to kind of figure that out on the fly.
06:29Because I don't think it's, you know, shocking that he was talking up Andy Borgallis after two
06:35missed extra points, which I'd like, forget it.
06:37Find somebody else.
06:38Like, I'd be done with him.
06:40But he's not.
06:41And at least for the time being, he's going to talk the guy up.
06:44Also, Will Campbell, he's like, oh, no, he didn't.
06:46He just pointed.
06:46He didn't false start.
06:47No, he did false start.
06:48But he absolutely thought he false started.
06:50Like, I was like, I don't know.
06:51Am I looking at the wrong thing?
06:52Like, he did, but he feels like, hey, I'm going to talk up these rookies, right?
06:56Maybe, like, they're two weeks in.
06:58Their head's probably swimming with what it takes to be in the NFL.
07:00And he's at least letting those guys know that they have the confidence in the head
07:05coach.
07:05And now you've got to get the results now going forward.
07:08But that's how he feels, I guess, to coach them.
07:10And then, I guess, conversely, too, Drake May has his best game of his career, but
07:14apparently doesn't get a game ball.
07:15Like, okay.
07:16But that's coaching, right?
07:18So if Rabel's doing that intentionally, and my guess is he is, he's coddling
07:21Borgallis, he's coddling Will Campbell, and then he's telling Drake, well, yeah, this
07:26will be 230 and two touchdowns?
07:28Yeah, I expect that out of you.
07:29That's a day at the office.
07:30Mack Jones had better numbers yesterday, for God's sakes.
07:32Mack Jones was having a ball game.
07:33Look, not that I'd take Mack Jones over Drake.
07:35I wouldn't.
07:36No, no, no.
07:36But, yeah, we expect that out of you every single week.
07:38And so, making him earn a little more?
07:41If that's Rabel by design, that's coaching.
07:43And when we talk about building culture and the changes from a year ago, I think that's the
07:48kind of stuff that I believe in Rabel for.
07:51Text line, you knew we were going to get some of these.
07:53Yeah.
07:53Although, I don't know if it's directed in the right place.
07:54It is not, but read it.
07:56617-779-7937.
07:58So, last week, WEI hosts and fans said they would rather have McCarthy than May.
08:04Is it the same now?
08:05LOL.
08:06I don't like McCarthy.
08:08I've never liked McCarthy.
08:08I didn't like him in Michigan.
08:09I didn't like him in the draft.
08:10I said he's the sixth of the six quarterbacks in the first round.
08:13So, maybe some hosts said that, but you and I did not.
08:17No, we did not.
08:17Now, I think we gave McCarthy credit for the way he played in the fourth quarter.
08:21He had a good fourth quarter, but I still have taken May.
08:23We pointed out he had done something that Drake May had never done, which was a fourth
08:27quarter comeback.
08:28So, I think we pointed all of that out, but I don't think either of us ever said we take
08:31May over McCarthy.
08:32That was our guest tomorrow, Tommy Tuesday at High Noon, who clearly said that.
08:35Oh, right, right, right.
08:35Yeah, he did.
08:36We didn't say that.
08:37No, we did not.
08:37Although, I'll tell you one, this was a big blow to the Caleb Williams greater than Drake
08:42May weeks.
08:42You get Drake May or you get J.J.
08:44McCarthy?
08:44Who are you taking?
08:45I would still take J.J.
08:46McCarthy.
08:47All right, you're saying it.
08:48That's a guess.
08:48No, but for me, put that to the side because I don't like J.J.
08:51McCarthy, but Caleb Williams, he was terrible.
08:54Yeah, I mean, yes.
08:55He was bad again, and I know you know that.
08:57I mean, he's been terrible, yeah.
08:58It's hard.
08:59Okay, but just yesterday, that was not a good day for him or anybody that thought he was
09:04better than May.
09:05May was far and away better yesterday.
09:07May had a great, great day.
09:08Yeah.
09:08And so, you know, I said earlier, it was the best individual play he's made.
09:12Some pushback on, oh, well, didn't he make a great play against Tennessee to tie the game?
09:16Sure.
09:16Yes.
09:17That was also like, backyard, pull it out of your backs.
09:20Incredible play.
09:21No, this was the best start to finish game.
09:22Well, best game, and that throw to Ramondre, where, again, he had to go through the progressions
09:27and find him out there, and it was a great catch by Ramondre.
09:29I thought that was a great, great play by Drake in a Patriots win yesterday, 33-27 over
09:34the Miami Dolphins.
09:35It's the Patriots Monday.
09:36We'll talk to you all day long on the phones, but we're joined right now by Patriots tight
09:39end Hunter Henry.
09:41He's brought to you by Drains by James, Eastern Mass' top provider of drain and sewer cleaning
09:45and repair by Shaw's and Star Market.
09:47You can look for the new lower-prices everyday tags through the store and save on the items
09:51that you buy most, and by Verizon, the New England Patriots, powered by Verizon 5G.
09:57Hunter Henry, how are we doing this week?
09:59Good, guys.
10:00We know you can take losses pretty hard.
10:03How does it feel to get not only the team's first win of the year, Mike Vrabel's first
10:08win with this franchise, and also the team's first win in Miami since 2019?
10:14Yeah, it feels great.
10:15You know, it's hard to win in this league.
10:17Obviously, it's hard to win down there in Miami for us, so it feels great.
10:21What did you think of Drake May's performance?
10:23Jones and I were just saying, we think it's the best he's ever looked in the NFL.
10:30I mean, he played great, man.
10:32He's a stud, man.
10:34And, you know, he's a special talent.
10:37We love being in the huddle with him, love competing with him.
10:39So, yeah, it was fun to be able to fly around with him yesterday.
10:42I heard a little snicker in there, so I assume I know where this is going.
10:45But lots of debate last week about Drake May and his plate.
10:48Is there too much on his plate?
10:49We certainly dabbled in it here on this show.
10:52So, any thoughts on those criticisms of Drake May being overwhelmed?
10:57I got no doubt in Drake at all, man.
10:59I'll let you guys try to debate on all those things, man.
11:02But we got no doubt in this locker room for sure.
11:03What's the feeling like for the offense after a long scoring drive that ends in a touchdown,
11:10but then you see the extra point is missed?
11:14Just move on.
11:15Next play.
11:17You know, it is what it is.
11:18And, obviously, we know we're going to execute those.
11:21But you just got to move on and get ready for that extra round.
11:25Similar question.
11:25The highs and lows on the sideline when you see the Dolphins bring back a punt return,
11:30then Gibson answers with a kickoff return.
11:33What's that high and low like on the sideline?
11:36Yeah, that was one of the more crazy things I've witnessed in football.
11:42And, yeah, I mean, shoot, that's just resilience, man, response.
11:46Just continuing to play, continuing to fight.
11:49And then AG obviously making, you know, a lot of guys making some big-time blocks on that.
11:53But also AG making a big-time play and a big-time spot.
11:57You see Vrabel motoring up the sideline?
11:59Have you seen any of the highlights or images of that?
12:01He was cooking.
12:03I did see that a little bit.
12:06Yeah, he was moving down the sideline.
12:09What was halftime like for you guys?
12:10Because it felt like you were dominating the game, and yet you were only up by one point on the scoreboard.
12:17I mean, that's the NFL, man.
12:18That's part of it.
12:19I mean, these teams, every team's good, especially the Dolphins.
12:22They're at home, man, the home opener.
12:24We knew it was going to be a dogfight.
12:26So, you know, we were ready for it, ready for the challenge, and we, you know, just had to respond.
12:31Okay, you guys won last week.
12:34So, you're 1-0 with the Hunter Henry surprise question of the week.
12:38You know we're bringing it back.
12:38Let's hit it.
12:39It's time for the Hunter Henry surprise.
12:44Surprise!
12:45Henry, touchdown!
12:47Whoa!
12:48Surprise, Sidney.
12:49Hey, surprise.
12:50Surprise, mother******.
12:52Surprise.
12:53Surprise.
12:53We wasted the good surprise on you.
12:55Allie, y'all digging for the surprise in the day, huh?
12:58Question of the week.
12:59All right, Hunter, on a scale of 1 to 85, 85 being the most surprised ever, 1 being not surprised at all,
13:07how surprised were you when Destiny's Child broke up?
13:15Good Lord, I was young, man.
13:17I was so young when that happened.
13:201 to 85?
13:221 to 85.
13:24Let's go 45.
13:26I was surprised.
13:28And that was the Hunter Henry surprise question of the week.
13:32Wow, more surprise than the ending of The Sixth Sense.
13:34That is.
13:34It's interesting.
13:35We're trying to figure out the scale here.
13:36Well, we're going to keep track of these all year long, Hunter.
13:40We appreciate the time joining us every Patriots Monday.
13:42We'll talk to you next week.
13:44All right, fellas.
13:45See you, man.
13:45All right, Hunter Henry here on Jones and Keith every Monday on WE.
13:49Yeah, 45.
13:50See, I feel like.
13:51It was.
13:51Was that a chuckle?
13:53Or a sarcastic chuckle?
13:54No, no, no, no.
13:55No, that was a real.
13:56That was Keith.
13:57We're funny, guys.
13:57That was a real laugh.
13:59That was real humor, I think.
14:00That could be like our segment.
14:01Was it a compliment?
14:03Was it a genuine laugh?
14:04So I would say, yeah, he was probably pretty young when that happened.
14:08We all knew Beyonce was going places, but to actually see it.
14:11That they broke up.
14:12It was jarring.
14:12It was jarring.
14:13And Kelly Rowland's pretty surprised.
14:14I tell you what.
14:15Oh, Michelle Williams.
14:16Michelle Williams was.
14:17Pretty surprised.
14:18Calling up her agent.
14:19Yeah, but wasn't Beyonce's mom in charge of the whole thing?
14:22She kind of had a feeling where this thing was headed.
14:24That sounds right.
14:25She was the breakout star.
14:26All right.
14:26So he was more surprised at that than the ending of The Sixth Sense.
14:29Correct.
14:30Well, tune in next week to find out what else.
