00:00Hey, good morning, guys. How are you?
00:01Well, it's gotten so bad that I actually had to apologize to Wiggy on Monday for saying there was no
00:07regression going on with Drake May.
00:10Are you, where do you stand? Are we seeing a regression here?
00:15Well, I think regression is probably the right term only because he played so well last year.
00:20And I think, you know, I talked about this with several people over the past few days.
00:23I think there was really no indication that this was a possibility.
00:27I think if you watched him in training camp, I was there the day they practiced the Eagles.
00:31He looks phenomenal. And so I think this has kind of come out of nowhere to a lot of people
00:36within the organization, on the team, all of those things.
00:39And I think the one thing that that I've come to conclusion on is, you know, I watched Bo Nix
00:44play the other night.
00:45And now while the other team didn't catch the ball, like he threw it up to to L.A. four
00:51or five times and it just didn't come down to it.
00:53And because Bo Nix didn't play as well as Drake May last year, everyone kind of like, ah, he's still
00:58learning.
00:58He's getting there. And I think that's what we're seeing a little bit with Drake is there's still some of
01:03these growing pains that we thought maybe he overcame last year that we didn't see.
01:07I mean, there's similar plays this year that maybe he made as a rookie.
01:11And so I don't know what it is as far as is he uncomfortable?
01:15I mean, there's times where he looks like the player that we saw last year.
01:18He threw a back shoulder to Matt Collins. I'm like, OK, that's the guy that we know.
01:21The first third down of the game, he steps up into the pocket and rips the swirl route to Matt
01:26Collins.
01:26There's plays there where I'm like, OK, that's the player we know.
01:30And then there's other plays and maybe ones that you guys don't even notice.
01:33But like I think it's second and nine. And after that first third down conversion and I know the read
01:40of the play and he's not even looking at the first read.
01:42And I'm like, what's going on here? Like he nailed this every time last year.
01:47Where is his head at? And so I think there's there's just this like.
01:51Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. And unfortunately, you know, the ones that are killing them are the few bad plays
01:58that he's just making some bad decisions on.
02:00Like it's just one of those things that's so hard to figure out what the problem is, because there are
02:06plays where I'm like, that's exactly the player we're used to.
02:09And I think there's a little bit of hoping for plays like the one that he throws. He rolls out
02:14to the right. He throws to Pop Douglas. It's off of Pop's fingertips.
02:18And I remember watching the game and they kind of they kind of zoomed in on him and he kind
02:22of put his hands on his knees and you can just see like seriously, like if that's not hitting.
02:27And I think he's it's like a hitter that's in a slump that's just dying to have that first hit.
02:33And I think you see it. And he's always been so good about his body language. And that was one
02:37that really struck me because it was like he knew he had a touchdown.
02:40They missed it. And I think in years past, it's like, OK, I'll get another chance.
02:44And now it's like, oh, man, like I we I need that so bad.
02:48And then he just spirals like, well, look, I'll say this from personal experience.
02:54I don't I'm not Drake. I don't know what's going on with him.
02:56But there was two games in my career where I basically played to not mess up and to not lose.
03:01And that was my last two starts in Cleveland because I knew the whole front office and the city was
03:06was pulling for Johnny Manziel.
03:07And I went into those games so timid and so hesitant.
03:11And honestly, what it does, it makes you put the ball.
03:14It makes you make worse decisions because you're not you're not cutting it loose.
03:17You're not just being yourself. And I think that's honestly, I like the fact that they're going to play Buffalo
03:22this week and everybody's against them.
03:24Everybody's on Drake like Buffalo's three, you know, like go and cut it loose, man.
03:30Like there's nothing. It can't get worse.
03:32Go go out there and just say, screw it and be the player that you are, because we know that
03:37that he's that player.
03:38And people want to say, oh, the schedule. Look, the schedule wasn't ripping confident in cuts last year.
03:44Like it's just it's one of those things where I think there's certain plays where it's like, OK, I feel
03:50good about this one.
03:50I'm going to cut it loose. And then there's other plays. And I don't know if it's if he's feeling
03:54pressure.
03:55There's times where I think like the one he hits to pop Douglas up the left sideline where there's a
03:59great protection.
04:00It's a three man rush. He hangs and he fires a whole shot up the sideline.
04:04And it's like not many quarterbacks in the league are even going to attempt that.
04:07But how do you go from that to the where you're sitting in there and you're just making, you know,
04:12throwing a comeback to the DB because Kyle Williams doesn't win.
04:15Like those are the plays where he's he's just too far in between the good and the bad.
04:21Brian, you've been around a lot of football like I have and generally when a player right of the week,
04:26go ahead.
04:28When a player has mental issues, football guy, the football guy, there are things you look at and go, OK,
04:35he Courtney brought this up.
04:36He lacks confidence or he's putting too much pressure on himself or he's seeing ghosts out there because he is
04:43playing scared and playing a little timid.
04:46Like you said that you you dealt with. But when it's the quarterback position and you're making the bonehead mistakes
04:53that high school quarterbacks shouldn't be making.
04:56Rolling out on the two yard line and throwing it to basically the defender.
05:01You're just like throwing it to him and say, hey, you can have the ball.
05:04I wonder, like, where is this mental breakdown come from as a quarterback?
05:11Yeah, I don't know. I mean, look, I don't know if it's you know, there was a rough stretch against
05:16the playoffs, which even in the playoffs is for for what people wanted to talk about.
05:19Like there were great throws in the playoffs.
05:21Yes, I can think of the touchdown pass to Hunter Henry against the Chargers, the the slant versus all out
05:26blitz to Pop Douglas, the go ball to Kayshawn Booty.
05:29Let's not even talk about the AFC championship game because that was the weather.
05:32That was the snow wasn't even really like trying to attempt to throw it.
05:35And even in the Super Bowl, I thought there was times where they were confident.
05:38They moved the ball. They just went backwards.
05:39And I don't know if it's going from that and then not playing an actual game.
05:44Now I look at it. I'm like, maybe he needed to go out there in the preseason and get a
05:48few series under his belt where things were clicking and he felt good because you went from Super Bowl where
05:53it was a really bad loss to now going out to play Seattle.
05:56And it wasn't bad for three quarters. It was just having to take the monotonous check down.
06:00And I think all of a sudden he's like, all right, I look, I led the league in deep balls
06:04last year.
06:04I got to make a play. And now you press and now you're sitting there being like, man, now I'm
06:09hoping that it works.
06:11Like to me, the F and Chisholm is just throwing it back there, hoping that something good happens.
06:15And that's when something bad happens, obviously.
06:18And so I think you got to live with being like, all right, are they going to play cover six?
06:21I'll take the I'll take the check down. I'll take the hitch to the quarter side.
06:24I'll take the out to the half side.
06:25Like, don't let the defense dictate to you where you are trying to force the ball.
06:32Let them dictate to you and say, all right, we're good enough to take a five yard out and get
06:36to second and five and convert the third down until we get them in a look where we actually can
06:40take advantage of.
06:41And so, look, Wiggy, you know as good as me, like everybody's different.
06:44And the one thing that I would say is there was so much hype and, you know, the bar was
06:53set so high that I think everybody, us, the team, everybody included, went in with these high expectations.
07:00And now that he struggled a little bit, I think everybody's kind of looking around and be like, whoa, like,
07:04OK, we got to do a better job to pick him up.
07:07What can we do to make it easier on Drake? We got to run the ball better, first and foremost.
07:10There's too many times where it's one guy missing a block or one guy missing assignment and it could be
07:15a big run.
07:16And so that's where the rest of the guys need to step up and rally around him and make it
07:21a little bit easier on him and tell Drake, like, look, dude, you don't need to make every hero play.
07:25We're good enough to if we have to punt and come back the next drive.
07:29OK, that's better than turning it over, because if you if you eliminate the turnovers, I know that the play
07:35hasn't been great, but if you eliminate the turnovers, you're in every single game.
07:39You probably win Seattle if you don't give Jacksonville the ball that many times and they score off of it
07:45like you're in that game, too.
07:46So I think first and foremost, it's just got to be like, look, if it's not there, it's not there.
07:50Live for the next play. We got we got 60 plays in a game.
07:53We don't need to force three bad ones and give the ball to the other team.
