00:00But of the 10 penalties, Washington legitimately committed
00:03at least half of them, and they were seismic.
00:06And the pre-snap stuff continues to be a problem.
00:09So the video I did Sunday night in London
00:13that kind of I think then went crazy as I was sleeping.
00:16A little bit viral. I saw it.
00:17People said, man, J.P. Finley is not holding back.
00:20Right, but part of that was...
00:21You weren't wrong, by the way, in any of that.
00:23Well, I also was pointing out some of the egregious calls
00:27that went against Washington,
00:28but also the egregious mistakes.
00:30Two weeks in a row, Zabe, they've had a touchdown called back
00:34because of procedural penalties.
00:36That's not on the refs. That's on them.
00:38I saw a video this morning that claims that procedure call was not correct.
00:43There was actually two calls on that play.
00:45One was a hole as well.
00:46Which would have stopped the gain at...
00:49Like, De'Ami was way downfield.
00:51Yes, he was 25 yards downfield.
00:53The thing was, there was a delayed release.
00:58At the line of scrimmage, which is technically not a false start.
01:02So if the ball is snapped, hut hike.
01:05And one guy stays there for an extra second or half a second.
01:09It looks janky.
01:11It looks false starty.
01:13But it's not.
01:14There's nothing to prevent a guy on offense from not firing off the line
01:18at the time the ball is snapped.
01:20My greater point with the refs is that, yes, a lot of the calls were problematic.
01:27The refs did not lose the game for Washington.
01:29And I feel like the discourse over the kind of 24, 36 hours since I was really on, like,
01:38locked in Sunday night London time to by this morning has shifted from some people thinking
01:45the refs are solely to blame and some people saying stop complaining about the refs because
01:49so much other stuff happened.
01:51And I think the truth is probably somewhere there in the middle, right?
01:53I think you also had major injuries in this game.
01:56I...
01:57The way that game was unfolding early...
02:00Frankly, I think if Marcus doesn't get hurt, they win the game.
02:03The way the offense was moving...
02:04They got a good shot at, yeah.
02:05The way the offense was moving early...
02:06And the way the defense was playing as well.
02:08And there were moments to really like with Kaliak Manis.
02:12I leave that game with nothing negative to say about Kaliak Manis.
02:18However, it's one thing.
02:20We saw the Bears do this two weeks ago on Monday night where their third-string quarterback
02:25had the full week of practice, right?
02:28He got the starter's reps for the full week.
02:30And they came in and looked impressive.
02:33But for a seventh-round rookie to have to come in, what was that, early in the second quarter?
02:38Yeah.
02:39And just be thrust into it?
02:40That's an impossible situation.
02:43And the deep ball to Trey Burks was phenomenal.
02:46Yeah.
02:46And if people just want to focus on that, that's cool.
02:48Right.
02:49But like, you throw a seventh-round rookie into a game where I'm going to get to my two
02:54issues that they could have controlled and I think controlled poorly.
02:57But you throw him into that game in that situation, it's going to be really tough to win.
03:02And I think the injuries, Jalen Lane, Amenahu, like there's other injuries, right?
03:07Jeremy Reeves almost lost a damn finger.
03:09Like there were injuries throughout the game.
03:11I saw that.
03:12That skeeved me out.
03:14Yeah.
03:15That was a tough guy.
03:16I almost lost one, but that's why God gave us 10.
03:19I'm like, no, man, you want all 10 of them.
03:22Jesus.
03:22Let's not talk about this.
03:24But the refs and the injuries, beyond their control, period.
03:29They both played a role in the loss, undoubtedly, but that's the football gods.
03:33That's the will of the universe, man.
03:35That is beyond their control.
03:36And I have a lot of people asking me if I think, you know, there's a conspiracy against
03:41Washington.
03:42I do not.
03:43No.
03:44Let me be clear on that.
03:45I think that's kind of crazy talk.
03:47I do think, however, the refs across the league have been awful.
03:52I don't know if you, I mean, for the NFL to suspend two refs for their behavior.
03:57Yeah, this happened yesterday after we were off the air.
03:59I was shocked.
03:59That does not happen.
04:01Last time, so the side judge that said F you to Trey McBride got a two-gamer.
04:07It is the first multi-game suspension since 1978 of an NFL referee.
04:14That's crazy.
04:15And a one-game suspension for crew chief Adrian Hill is the first one in about eight years.
04:20Now, what's interesting about the Adrian Hill suspension is they did joke about it.
04:25The Viking player that ran into him said he was cool once the initial shock of, what's
04:30going on?
04:30You knocked me down.
04:31You know, and Hill's explanation was I was trying to break up what I thought was going
04:35to be a fight.
04:36That's why I looked so animated.
04:38I think the Hill suspension might have been a bit unfair.
04:42The other guy, though, you can't say F you to the players because it then shows a lack
04:47of composure and your sole job as a referee is to always be composed and always be neutral.
04:53Even though McBride was chirping him out of the player's box or the sideline box he's supposed
04:59to stay in and told that side judge, you are ruining the game.
05:03I think like for people that want to scream about.
05:06But yes, the commanders rest were horrible and the game was so uneven and it wasn't just
05:10the 10 to 1 disparity in penalties of which some of them were legit.
05:13Others were 50 50.
05:15They picked that Deami Brown flag up on a pass interference.
05:17That stadium to their credit.
05:19That was an informed football crowd.
05:21Was it really?
05:22Yes.
05:22Okay.
05:22They booed the hell out of that decision and and I know there were a lot of commanders
05:27fans that traveled from here over there.
05:29There were a lot of just commanders British fans and that was that that was an informed
05:33football crowd.
05:34They went ballistic.
05:35But for the folks that think there's a conspiracy theory against Washington.
05:38Yeah, that can't figure that out.
05:40Why would they put their thumb on the scale for the Colts?
05:43I saw this from Warren Sharp across the league.
05:46There have been 17 touchdowns called back with penalties through four weeks.
05:50That number was five last year.
05:52Number one, most four games.
05:54Number one, most penalties against offenses per snap since at least 2000.
05:59Number one, most penalties on third or fourth downs in the second half of games since at
06:03least 2000.
06:04And that's probably just when the data is available.
06:06Number one, most penalties in the red zone against offenses since at least 2000.
06:10The refereeing is terrible bad across the league and there are way more flags than there
06:16have been in a lot of years.
06:17So it's not a conspiracy against Washington.
06:19They're just doing poor jobs.
06:22It's not a conspiracy, but it was very unbalanced.
06:24And it is very frustrating as a fan because we're not going to quit watching football no
06:29matter how bad it is.
06:30Anyone that wants to call up, say, well, what are you going to do?
06:32Are you going to quit watching?
06:33I quit watching years ago.
06:34Oh yeah, sure.
06:35You've quit watching.
06:36There's nothing better than NFL football as a drug and we're addicted.
06:39So you're going to put up with it.
06:41That said, we're averaging, I think, 17 accepted penalties per game now, which is the highest
06:46it's been in 10 years.
06:47And certain things like the OPI on digs, that apparently is a point of emphasis now because
06:54the same exact call got hit on Deshaun Watson, not Deshaun Watson, but Christian Watson in
07:00the Packer game at the top of his break, just a subtle, this, and it's something that used
07:06to never get called OPI used to take the most egregious extension of the elbows, right?
07:12And yet now they're calling it across the league in different situations.
07:16And I don't recall them saying, Hey, we're going to start calling this now.
07:21More importantly, I don't think anyone wants it.
07:24Nobody says, gee, I like the NFL.
07:25I'd like it more if they would make the receivers, make it more fair.
07:30For the corners who have the most impossible job in football, but why do they care about
07:34the core?
07:34They never have never had.
07:36Why start now?
07:37Basically.
07:38Now, those were things beyond Washington's control.
07:40There are two and possibly three things that were absolutely firmly within Washington's
07:45grasp that they did not execute or made curious decisions.
07:50One, you get, you get the ball off a fumble from your defense right away.
07:56Tremendous play by Odafa Owe.
07:58And you can't convert that to a touchdown.
08:00That's, they kicked two field goals in the first quarter from inside the Indianapolis
08:04red zone.
08:05What did they do against Seattle?
08:06So well, three turnovers, three touchdowns.
08:09Yeah.
08:09What'd you do against Indy?
08:10Two turnovers, two field goals.
08:12Like to not be able to convert on either of those kind of short yardage opportunities was
08:18emblematic of what I think was a truly bad decision by Dan Quinn.
08:23And if you look at the drive chart in this game, Indy's first five possessions, fumble,
08:29punt, punt, punt, interception.
08:31Defense was dominant.
08:33Dominant.
08:34So then Washington at their own 46, when they were unable to convert short yardage in the
08:40red zone and came up short twice with their starting quarterback still on the field and
08:45had to kick short yardage field goals, fourth and short from the 46 with your third string
08:51quarterback now in the game who looks completely unprepared in the moment because Indy is blitzing
08:56the bejesus out of the right fourth and short, your defense playing hair on fire.
09:01You go for it.
09:02Not only do you go for it, you go for it with your fourth string running back practice squad
09:07call up from the night before on the field.
09:09I asked why Craig Reynolds was in the game.
09:12I was told it was happenstance.
09:13That's just the formation that was on the field.
09:15That, that answer drives me nuts.
09:18That answer is like, well, that's why I asked the damn question.
09:21Like, yeah, that's the play that came out of the ticket machine that we pushed the button
09:26on.
09:26You know what you can do?
09:27Bro, that's not how it works.
09:28You know what you can do?
09:29Call a timeout, get the personnel package one in there.
09:31Right.
09:31First half timeouts are free to use.
09:33It all dovetails on that fourth down.
09:35The momentum, you felt it in the stadium.
09:37Football games are living, breathing organisms that shift and turn on decisions.
09:43That decision, the first five possessions for Indy, fumble, punt, punt, punt, interception.
09:49You go for it on fourth.
09:50You get stuffed.
09:51After being stuffed twice in their red zone, your short yardage run game is not working.
09:56You go for it there.
09:57You get stuffed.
09:58The next two possessions for Indy with the short field, touchdown, field goal.
10:03They take the lead.
10:04They never give it back.
10:05That fourth down call, I understand wanting to be aggressive.
10:08I understand wanting to have belief in your guys that you can get a yard at midfield,
10:12but it had already been documented.
10:14You couldn't get that yard twice in the red zone.
10:17Well, also, if you get the yard, tell them what they've won, Bob.
10:20More downs way far away from the end zone and not even in field goal range.
10:26I would have rather gone for it on fourth down in the red zone with your defense on fire.
10:30So why then do you not go for it on fourth and one and kick a field goal, and then
10:34you
10:34decide to go for it on fourth and one to avoid a punt?
10:37That makes no sense.
10:38There needs to be a laminated card for Quinn to help him sort these things out, because
10:43it made no logical sense.
10:44And you couple that with, and I think this, at least for me, is one of the more frustrating
10:50moments of this game, and we kind of saw it in practice in Watford, England, throughout
10:55the week, where your short yardage game is ineffective early in this game.
11:00You're kicking field goals from the 11 and the 13-yard line, which is not the design for
11:06anyone, right?
11:08So then you're going to go for it on fourth down with an interior O-line that's largely
11:12getting their ass kicked by DeForest Buckner with your fourth string running back that you
11:17elevated from the practice squad the night before.
11:19Well, that's just what came out of the hopper, JP.
11:21After they told us for six months how much they love Nick Allegretti, by week four, he's
11:26benched.
11:26You sign Lucas Patrick going into week two, Lucas Patrick becomes your starting center.
11:31That's a veteran free agent that you signed off the street week two.
11:34And I'm not mad at Patrick.
11:36There were some high snaps in this game.
11:38But Matt Goldman kind of settled in in the second half.
11:41I don't want to bury Matt Goldman too much, but you know what he performed like?
11:44A sixth-round rookie going against DeForest Buckner.
11:47He was getting smoked early in that game.
11:50The first sack they gave up, he got beat to the inside, which you cannot do as a guard.
11:55You get beat to the outside, you get beat on a bull rush, something like that.
11:58Okay.
11:59He got beat to the inside.
12:00Not in the A-gap, for God's sakes.
12:02And that's your call in that situation, on a questionable call to begin with?
12:07And it's just like, you told us for six months Allegretti's your guy, and you benched him
12:12by week four.
12:14Allegretti's going to be fine, everybody.
12:15Calm down about Allegretti.
12:17Do not pee on my leg and tell me it's raining.
12:21Yeah, you bring up a lot of great points, and they are not reassuring on a Tuesday.
12:26You know, a lot of times you come off a loss, and by Tuesday, the way you are mentally as
12:31a fan, you're thinking, okay, I got ways to massage this loss into something not so bad.
12:35I think you're actually bending me the other way.
12:38I think I feel worse about it today than I did yesterday.
12:40If you come out of that game, and you want to wash it, because your third-string quarterback
12:47entered the game and had never had NFL experience, if you want to throw it away that way, because
12:53this week, you're going to have Jaden back, you're going to have Cosby back, you should
12:55have Terry back, you almost have an entirely different team.
12:59Plus, you add in the weirdness factor of playing in London in front of a live band.
13:03Like, it was odd.
13:04It was very different, right?
13:05Were they playing bangers, by the way?
13:07They were five feet next to me, Zabe.
13:09I got to enjoy that live band.
13:11They played the hits.
13:12Cover tunes.
13:13Played the hits.
13:14All covers, yeah.
13:14Okay.
13:15They were a good band.
13:15American 80s, 90s, and 2000s covers.
13:18Mr. Brightside.
13:20No, they played the-
13:20Blink-182.
13:21Jeff, what's the song?
13:22All the small things.
13:23Ah, Patik.
13:24Patik.
13:24My kids love it.
13:25Ah, Patik.
13:26Patik.
13:27APT.
13:28APT.
13:28Yeah.
13:28Played that a lot, it seemed.
13:31That's a more modern one right there.
13:33I'm not thrilled that my seat in the press box was five feet away from them, but I'm not mad
13:37at the band.
13:38But, like, I want to open the phones.
13:41800-636-1067.
13:43800-636-1067.
13:46I'm dying to know what your question is.
13:48Can I guess what your question is?
13:49Sure.
13:49I feel like you're ramping up to it.
13:51We did not talk about this before the show started.
13:53I believe your question is, do you feel worse now than you did Sunday afternoon?
13:59Sure.
14:00That's part of it.
14:00That's one question.
14:01And also, like, what are you most mad about?
14:04Because I'm legitimately curious about the fan base's temperature.
14:08So, Tuesday, what still sticks in your craw?
14:11Are you still mad about the refs?
14:13Or do you think they lost because of the injuries?
14:16Or is it the stuff they could control and mishandle?
14:21Yeah.
14:21Because those, to me, are, like, there's a dichotomy here of what was completely beyond
14:25their control.
14:26Ava Kaliak-Manus, to his credit, was brilliant in postgame.
14:29He's a wholesome, earnest kid that you want to root for.
14:32Yeah.
14:32He said, we got to let the refs ref, and we got to play.
14:35Well, the decision-making from a personnel side to go with Goldman over Allegretti, I
14:41think you would have had better play from Nick Allegretti.
14:43I do.
14:44They clearly disagree.
14:46But, like, is this a developmental league in week four when you need a win?
14:50Why do you think, I'm curious, that Allegretti would have been better?
14:53Because he's a veteran.
14:54Okay.
14:55We'll get to it all.
14:56Time on task, so to speak, the fact he's been there.
14:59Yes.
14:59Okay.
15:00800-636-1067.
15:02800-636-1067.
15:04We're taking your calls.
15:05I'm reacting.
15:07Give me the 24-hour breathing room.
15:09Let's go.
