00:00Different.
00:00Now, Zabe, I don't know if you've done this with us yet,
00:02but on Tuesdays, we like to do our Beamish and Finley grades.
00:06Got my red pen out.
00:07I was alerted to this yesterday by your excellent producer, Mr. Clary.
00:11Now, this is largely a byproduct of B and I,
00:15and I don't know where you land on this.
00:16Mocking pro football focus.
00:18Yeah, because there's so much good from pro football focus
00:20that I don't want to diminish.
00:22Dude, they do good step counts, formations, empirical data.
00:25They're good at.
00:26Stuff they can objectively track.
00:28Right, their subjective stuff, I wildly disagree with
00:31and have for many, many years.
00:33Of course.
00:34So that's why we've come up with our own.
00:35Now, let me see if I can find a pen.
00:37White, Brian, see if you can find me a pen, please.
00:39Zabe, maybe you have an extra.
00:41I brought some pens for you.
00:43Thank you, buddy.
00:43We like to divide it up by position group.
00:47So we'll start on the offensive side of the ball,
00:51and you've already done yours.
00:53Is there a specific position group you'd like to start with?
00:55I'm going to start at quarterback.
00:56I'm going to give Calliak Manis a pass as a grade.
01:08Because as a guy who was not supposed to play this year,
01:11probably would have, should have normally been a practice squatter,
01:14he came into the game and made some plays.
01:17He was running for his life at times.
01:20The line was overwhelmed, but he did not totally vomit upon himself.
01:24So that's good.
01:25It's a pass.
01:26I'm not going to give him an A, B, C, D, E, F grade
01:29because he wasn't prepped to even play this game.
01:32So that's a pass from him specifically.
01:35Now, I think that's fair because he was thrust into an impossible situation.
01:40Had the kind of bad pick early where young quarterback just doesn't see
01:44the linebacker underneath.
01:45Like you see that all the time.
01:46But he certainly rebounded in the second half.
01:49Quarterback roster construction slash management, I give him a D.
01:53Okay.
01:53Because the more I thought about this, I'm like, okay,
01:58if Daniels was so confident saying, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope,
02:03about anything restricting his play with the brace,
02:06why wasn't he playing?
02:07Again, where's the science on one more week is going to do better?
02:12I've heard that.
02:14And they kind of created that conversation avenue on their own by he's on the
02:20injury report.
02:21He's limited.
02:21A ton of guys that were on the injury report is limited.
02:23We're also playing.
02:24I never thought he was going to play.
02:27I think they kind of created that conversation on their own.
02:30And I think some of it was they wanted to let him get some work in what was
02:34going to be a funky week where they really only practice Thursday,
02:38Friday.
02:38Okay.
02:39I don't, I, and if I don't know,
02:41but limited weeks are a thing in this league and funky travel situations are a
02:45thing.
02:46And he's a veteran now year three moved from a gruesome dislocated.
02:50I know.
02:51I never thought he was playing.
02:52I thought it was going to be Marcus.
02:54Then I would rather him say when asked, how is it more like, yeah,
02:58you know what?
02:58There's some adjustment going on.
03:00I'm still getting a little bit comfortable with it,
03:02but I know it's going to be fine.
03:03I just need to do a few more things to get fully up to speed.
03:06I would have preferred that.
03:07Now the confident athlete in Daniels is going to take a confident pose and say,
03:12nope, nope, nope, nope, nope.
03:13Cause he doesn't want doubt creeping into the way he thinks and operates.
03:17I get that from his standpoint,
03:19but I just think a lot of teams live in their fears more than they do their
03:23hopes and dreams.
03:23And I just don't know medically if one more week does a lot.
03:27You could have played him and he could have used the game.
03:30As a way to sort of sort out how he's going to play the rest of the year
03:35against a lesser opponent.
03:37I think they couldn't have played him.
03:38Never.
03:39We're going to play him.
03:40Okay.
03:40That's so that's why this was always going to be Marcus because you want to
03:44give him the time, the space.
03:45I think they want him to have a full regular practice week.
03:49But the other part of my D grade on the cross roster quarterback roster
03:52construction management is you have a older quarterback with a lot of history
03:56of injuries who hurt his knee.
03:58Yes.
03:59Who hurt his knee that you just said, nah, he'll be fine.
04:01Sort of like Alec Grady.
04:03Oh, he'll be fine.
04:04Well, he, guess what?
04:04He was not fine.
04:05And then you had a very raw late round pick in there.
04:08So I don't like the way they went about this quarterback roster.
04:12There's that quarterback.
04:14Would you have felt way better if it was Cadillac on the practice squad and
04:18you had like a Josh Johnson, a Jeff Driscoll.
04:20Yes.
04:21Yes.
04:22A functional can get you in and out of the huddle kind of a guy that can
04:25run for his life, which Kelly Mac is Kelly, Kelly modest did for a
04:31couple of times.
04:31But like the Josh Johnson's, the tie rod tailors, the plug and play guys,
04:36the case key rods, they are very valuable guys in this league for a game.
04:42Yeah.
04:43One game.
04:44I think, I mean, listen, we asked Quinn now we don't get much public access to
04:50Peters, right?
04:51But we asked Quinn repeatedly throughout the off season and into the regular
04:57season, you plan to bring a veteran backup in.
04:59And they kept saying, we're not having conversations in that space, which is a
05:03hell of a way of saying no, but like that is a legitimate question slash
05:11criticism.
05:12I thought Cadillac showed something, but when you had, when you had, when
05:17Jaden goes down and you have to go back to Marcus who already had a knee
05:20sprain a month ago, maybe six weeks ago.
05:22Now it is a real question.
05:24Did you have a grade for Marcus?
05:26I don't know if we got that.
05:28Incomplete.
05:29Okay.
05:29So we have a pass and incomplete for Marcus and then a D for the management
05:35slash construction.
05:36The whole concept of how are you going to layer guys that can both a play and
05:41B stay healthy.
05:42I, uh, I didn't have as in depth of a grade as you.
05:47That's fine.
05:47I mean, I'm, I'm, I'm freelancing here.
05:49It's interesting.
05:50I appreciate the conversation.
05:52So Mariota started the game really on fire three or four for 46 yards.
05:57He had the one run for 35 yards goes down early Cadillac was exciting.
06:03I would say, I wouldn't say he was necessarily good.
06:07He showed you some good, showed you some bad.
06:11Um, not everything has to go deep.
06:13Young man, 15 to 33 for a buck.
06:1586 with a touchdown and a pick.
06:18Um, I think for the quarterback, my grade is a C.
06:23Okay.
06:23Right.
06:24Like it wasn't good enough to win.
06:26It could, it could pass.
06:28Right.
06:28But there's a difference between winning and passing the running backs.
06:32Zabe, let's go to the running backs.
06:34Uh, not good.
06:35Corey Krosky merit, AKA bill nine for 15.
06:39Um, Craig Reynolds, two for four.
06:41Katron Allen, three for one.
06:44Eckler was by far your most dynamic back.
06:46Um, and you just signed him off the street four for 29 on the ground.
06:51Um, had the long run of the game for,
06:54any non quarterback you're leading rusher on the game was Mariota.
06:57Cause it was one big long run.
06:59Now bill did have a 35 yard catch.
07:02Um, Eckler had an 11 yard catch.
07:04So you got a little bit of factor.
07:06Those are a little bit of productivity, but the running back,
07:08they are not getting enough out of the run game period.
07:11Yeah.
07:11I, uh, I don't think bill is very good.
07:15I think bill benefits from the name bill.
07:18I think there's a lot shown flashes of better than we've seen thus far this year.
07:23He's a seventh rounder.
07:24That's had a couple long runs and he's got a great name and everyone likes his attitude.
07:28But at the end of the day, you're like, does this guy make a difference to me?
07:31He is the most component generic replacement level, if not minus back.
07:36And I hate to say that cause people want to like the guys you got on the team.
07:41I don't see where he's a needle mover whatsoever.
07:44Have you looked at bill's stat line through four games?
07:47No.
07:4956 carries.
07:50So he's getting a legit work.
07:51He's getting workload.
07:522.8 YPC.
07:54And he's not supposed to be your hammer.
07:56Like if, if that's, that's, that is a, that is a dismal number.
08:00Now you also don't think Katron has proven what they wanted him to be is not what he is
08:05in this right power back, the short yardage back.
08:08The thing about crushing running backs though, for not being good is it's so line dependent
08:12and the line is not good.
08:14So how much do you want to put on the backs versus, and then there's scheme as well.
08:19Some teams are just better at scheming running than other teams are.
08:22And it helps if your quarterback can move.
08:25So there's a lot that goes into the soup of grading the running backs, but I don't think
08:29any of the running backs are very good and you're going to have to make do with what you
08:34got.
08:34And my friend, my buddy, Ahmed, who was in London was texting me during the game, just give
08:39the ball to Eckler, just give the ball to Eckler.
08:41And I can understand why you see that.
08:43He had four carries for 29 yards.
08:45He's averaged seven a pop.
08:46Very bursty for a guy coming off an Achilles in less than a year.
08:50But you also just signed him.
08:51He'd said after the game, he's learning the offense.
08:55Like I think part of the plan with Eckler, and we've seen this now through two seasons,
08:59parts of two seasons here in Washington, you got to try to manage those carries for the
09:03long haul.
09:04And that's why you can't just give him 15 carries in his first action back.
09:08The running backs to me is a Eckler's 31 for the record.
09:11I mean, if you look at the rushing game entirely, 22 carries for a hundred yards, four and a
09:16half a pop.
09:17If you back out Mariotas, I mean, you're talking about 21 carries for 65 yards.
09:22Wolf.
09:23Yeah.
09:23Not winning football.
09:24It's a D.
09:25Yeah.
09:26I can go with that grade.
09:27We're both on D.
09:28I can go with that grade.
09:30Yes.
09:30Okay.
09:31The receivers in this game.
09:32Now you're down Terry.
09:33What Jeff, you disagree?
09:37Jeff, Jeff's in there talking about the D.
09:40Um, when you look at the receivers in this game, you didn't have Terry McLaurin, which
09:45is a big blow, especially for a team that I don't frankly think sauce gardeners, what
09:50he was.
09:51And Traverius ward is who they claim.
09:53I think sauce Carter is cooked.
09:55Right.
09:55Honestly, but they have name value at corner.
09:57Anyway, you'd like to have your best receiver on the field.
10:00Uh, the receiving group collectively pass catchers had 18 catches for 232 yards.
10:08Um, you had the one touchdown by Burks, one catch, 47 yards, you know, certainly give
10:14him credit there.
10:15Uh, the army Brown was your lead leader in the past yards, three catches for 65 yards.
10:21I get, including the 48 yard deep shot.
10:24Um, Steph digs was your leader in receptions, five catches for 35 yards.
10:28I think you could argue that at least should have been six for about 50 on the OPI call
10:33alas.
10:34Um, receivers were fine.
10:37They didn't hurt you.
10:40They didn't win you the game either.
10:41You don't have, there is no egregious drops.
10:44Now you did look at the motion or the, uh, illegal formation penalty that wiped out the
10:49big touchdown from Williams.
10:50Yeah.
10:51And you pointed something out.
10:52I didn't see before, which is that all three guys from one angle look like they were just
10:56kind of janking around, kind of swaying and moving.
10:59Maybe they were listening to the band there in the stands at Tottenham Hotspur.
11:03They weren't still enough people that was ticky tech.
11:07Certainly.
11:08But like, if you watch that play, it is.
11:12Caliak man is out of the shotgun with a bunch formation trips to his right.
11:16It's Brown Williams and, uh, Burks, I believe in that bunch three either way.
11:21But like, if you're going to get set, get set.
11:23If you're going to get set, get set for God's sakes.
11:26I think it's Diggs Brown.
11:28Oh, it's Diggs.
11:29Okay.
11:29Eh, maybe it wasn't.
11:32It could have been Burks.
11:33I'm trying to watch it again.
11:34But yeah, the receivers, it's a C.
11:38It's, yeah.
11:39Here's what I like about the wide receiver group, minus obviously Terry.
11:42They're pros who are punching above what their weight should be as talent.
11:47And they seem to relish their roles.
11:51So, Diami Brown's given the commanders more than I thought he would this time around, which is great.
11:56Burks does what he does.
11:57I love how he goes after the ball.
11:59And it's kind of hilarious to me that, you know, they've mixed in so easily, Stefan Diggs, when we spent
12:06all summer, every time I would come in here and do a shift with you guys, it was a bunch
12:11of calls about stupid Brandon Iyuk.
12:14Who, by the way, is he still putting out lunatic social media videos, wearing commander's gear, begging to be signed?
12:21Or has he sat in the corner realizing, yeah, that strategy did not work?
12:26Moron.
12:26Zay, more so than the lunatic videos on social media?
12:29Like, Diggs has been sweet.
12:31I've heard he's sending them to people within the organization, too.
12:34Oh, jeez.
12:37So, the first crazy plan did not work.
12:40Let's go to the next crazy plan.
12:42I like Diggs a lot.
12:44I think if you get Jaden back and you get Terry alongside and you get some kind of rhythm going,
12:49I think that can be a potent combo.
12:51But they all got to stay on the field at the same time, and that has proven to be harder
12:55than we thought.
12:55Agreed.
12:56I think the offense could look good Sunday.
12:58For the Colts game, though, we had a C on the receivers?
13:01I'd give them a B.
13:03You'd go a B?
13:04Okay.
13:04Yeah, for the receivers themselves.
13:05I'll give them a B.
13:08They made plays.
13:08They just all got called back.
13:10Pro Football Focus.
13:10Yes, exactly.
13:11Tight end positions, Abe.
13:13Do we have one?
13:16You're just getting nothing.
13:17Here's what's funny.
13:18As I was looking up the targets on Pro Football Focus, they actually gave Brandon Coleman a target.
13:25Yeah, I'm looking at it.
13:26On the ricochet, and I'm thinking, that's a weird quirk where I suppose every catch needs to have a target
13:32attached to it.
13:33But in reality, there was no target.
13:35You're not targeting your left tackle on a ricochet pass.
13:38Brandon Coleman outproduced the entire commander's tight end room combined.
13:43I know.
13:44You had Chigakakwa for two catches for five yards.
13:47Colson Yankoff, none.
13:48Senate, none.
13:49I don't believe Bates had a target either.
13:50Yeah.
13:51You're getting nothing from the tight end position.
13:54Chigakak got four targets at least.
13:56I'd like to see him more over the offense.
13:58Obviously, they do too.
13:59And he's got to stay on the field every week to do so.
14:02But that's a purchase that they really thought was going to give him some impact.
14:05So, tight end is an F right now.
14:08From me, at least.
14:10I have him as a D because I do think they're helping a lot in pass protection.
14:16Okay.
14:17But, like, I'm not mad at you for that.
14:18All right.
14:20But, you're right, by the way.
14:22Poor JP, by the way, as I've been talking here, I've been looking across the console.
14:25I just haven't been able to shake this cough.
14:26I know.
14:27You've got something.
14:28You've got something that is just tormenting you right now.
14:33Close to two weeks now.
14:34Okay.
14:35The offensive line.
14:37I'm not capable of grading O-line play.
14:40I'm a guy sitting on the couch.
14:42I would say it's a C-minus at best.
14:45Was it a complete disaster?
14:47No.
14:47I saw some cut-ups of other teams this week.
14:50The Chargers have some of the worst O-line tape that people are cutting up and putting out on social
14:57media I've seen in a long time.
14:58Not just guys not even knowing who they're blocking, but giving the weakest ass, just a gentle push, and the
15:04guy goes right past them.
15:05Yes, it's true that Justin Herbert seemingly sucks now, and he threw several bad belly ball interceptions, but he's getting
15:12murdered in the pocket because they're not blocking anybody out in San Diego or L.A., I should say.
15:17So, the commander's O-line, as poor as it has been, could be worse.
15:23So, I'm going to give him a C.
15:24That is one of the most important things I think we need to point out for fans is that there
15:30are teams that have sustained worse injuries.
15:33Worse injuries and are playing worse than your units and your side of the ball sometimes.
15:37There are teams that have been screwed by the rest more.
15:39That's true.
15:39And so, it's like everybody wants to scream about what's happening here.
15:41Be aware of the rest of the league.
15:43We're in our own bubble where we're focused on the burgundy and gold, but this is happening all over the
15:48league.
15:48I think offensive line, you gave up two sacks in this thing.
15:53Cadillac was getting the snot beat out of him when he first came in the game.
15:56Some of that is a credit to the Colts just going after a young kid that really didn't have much
16:00pocket awareness.
16:02Marcus did get hurt, though, like on a rush.
16:05You know what I'm saying?
16:06Yeah.
16:06And you're unable to run the ball.
16:10So, I don't know where, what was your grade?
16:13Sorry, I didn't write that down.
16:14A C.
16:14It's a generous C.
16:16But again, I fully admit, I am not capable of grading line play.
16:21I do like to watch guys on social media, former coaches and whatnot players that do this stuff.
16:28Who is?
16:29I like Brian Baldinger talking O-line.
16:30Yeah, Baldy is very good.
16:31There's another long-time O-line coach that's starting to do this stuff.
16:35And it's just good.
16:37It's educational as a fan.
16:38Because prior to everyone having access to the All-22s, you really couldn't do this kind of high-level stuff.
16:44Now they can.
16:45And Zay, just because everybody has access to the All-22 doesn't mean they know what the hell they're talking
16:50about.
16:50Agreed.
16:50Agreed.
16:51But I will listen to former NFL quarterbacks, even the ones who are third-string scrubs like Kurt Bankert.
16:57Because the third-string scrubs study hard as third-string scrubs because they're trying to play.
17:04Absolutely.
17:05All right.
17:05The grades don't look good.
17:06Shocking when you lose 30-13 to the Indianapolis Colts.
17:10We're going to break down the defense when we return.
17:12There was some good, some bad, some ugly.
17:14It's B. Mitchell Finley.
