A West Australian farmer is raising awareness for prostate cancer, following the death of her husband in 2024. At her annual ram sale, Liz Heggaton donated one of her prized rams to the cause to drive change from the paddock up.

00:04A ram sale with a special meaning for this family.
00:11Liz Hegerton lost her husband Craig to suicide while he was being treated for prostate cancer.
00:17The grief compounded by the death of her son James, who died in a car accident earlier this year.
00:23Without doubt, Craig and James will be smiling down on us today.
00:28And knowing them, you may even get a healthy nudge in the back whilst you're bidding.
00:32Her husband was undergoing androgen deprivation therapy at the time of his death, which Liz believes possibly contributed.
00:40Tragically, really quite soon after starting the drug, it was quite an insidious slide, but he took his own life.
00:49Since her husband's death in 2024, Liz has taken her fight for awareness of the drug and its side effects
00:57all the way to Parliament House in Canberra.
01:00But today, the focus is much more close to home.
01:03Lodge 230 is the first Kojak ram, which is a shedding breed that we've developed.
01:08And the proceeds for that ram are being donated to prostate cancer awareness.
01:13And another way of creating more conversation.
01:15It's something in rural communities that, you know, men are pretty bad at neglecting their own health.
01:20They'll look after their sheep, they'll look after their family, but yeah, they'll often put themselves last.
01:25With an industry full of promise and a purpose to raise awareness, Liz is determined to continue Craig and James'
01:32legacy.
01:33I'm really excited for the future of the sheep industry.
