00:02so you think your club's a big club yeah a club that matters sure you won a few trophies sold
00:08a
00:08few shirts packed out a few away-ins but there's a club that matters more prostate united we can't
00:16escape like prostate cancer so one in eight men die of prostate cancer each year it's one in four
00:21if you're black um so obviously there's a lot of work that needs to be done there early diagnosis
00:26with any cancer be that prostate cancer is really key and really improves you know recovery rates
00:31so possibly like i say to raise awareness of the football community but also by having this
00:36competitive challenge it also becomes a really good fundraising mechanism and of course we need
00:40to raise the funds because we raise the funds we can put that money into research and put the money
00:44to awareness football clubs may compete fiercely on the pitch but this is one campaign bringing the
00:50game together prostate cancer uk has launched its largest ever prostate united squad bringing
00:56together former players club staff broadcasters and supporters to encourage people to raise money
01:02by walking or running every day throughout october prostate cancer is reportedly the most diagnosed
01:08cancer in the uk with over 64 000 men diagnosed and more than 12 000 men dying each year the
01:18campaign
01:18has been running for eight years and has raised more than one million pounds for prostate cancer uk
01:24this is prostate united's ninth year so we'll definitely be coming back for a tenth and hopefully
01:29making that even bigger we sort of planned it for this to be our biggest year to date prostate united
01:35is
01:35the biggest grassroots fundraiser in football in the uk um it was a initiative that was started by
01:41two sports science staff at rotherham united nine years ago one of the founders stephen gilpin lost his
01:48and dad to prostate cancer and had an idea that he wanted to do something in memory of him and
01:53had
01:53this idea of running 10k every day in the month of october over the years this has grown it started
02:00off
02:00with a couple of his colleagues at the football clubs working with him and then his football staff
02:04moved across the uk to different clubs more and more people did it and then four years ago we launched
02:11it um out to the public so we asked football fans to put their passion give it a purpose and
02:18they'll
02:18take part in essentially a challenge which is run walk or cycle every day in october the aim is to
02:25support work helping more men affected by prostate cancer while giving supporters across the country the
02:31chance to represent the clubs that they follow we're asking fans to compete against each other so i for
02:37my sins i'm a nottingham forest fan i would join the nottingham forest team if you're a newcastle fan
02:42or an arsenal fan or a west ham fan you join their team and then what we do is we
02:46generate a league
02:47based on the monies raised so we have a league table so it's probably one of the more interesting
02:51league tables you've ever seen because like for the last few years doncaster rovers have won it
02:56why do you think it is so important to have those kind of more light-hearted elements of the cause
03:03bearing in mind it's the nature of like the prostate campaign is so like it's a heavy topic isn't it
03:10but i think what i think the beauty of prostate united is it it really taps into like the culture
03:16of what being a fan is and it's sort of it almost you know tips into that almost the sort
03:20of banter
03:21and the sort of like friendly rivalry that we have you know you can be friends with someone you support
03:26one team you support the other but we can get on we can have a bit of fun and i
03:30think it's it's
03:31something about it sort of taps into that belonging of being a football fan in the first place
03:34but then also just feeling part of the team and do you think because of that friendly like
03:38banterist nature about it it means that people are more inclined to talk about it because with
03:43prostate like cancer in itself it's something really difficult yeah so we we've as a charity we're
03:48really keen to break down boundaries and communicate and we like to go where men are and we like to
03:53make conversation as informal as it can do because that's what people respond to i think so i think
03:58absolutely with prostate united it gets the topic of prostate cancer being spoken about
04:05the bottom line is you know one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer you know and it's
04:11it's so it's not going to go away um it is the most common cancer in the uk so i
04:15think the more
04:16awareness we we can spread the more awareness we can spread with people enjoying themselves and having
04:21a good time is going to ultimately do best for the charity because it makes more people aware
04:25they're more aware of their risk it's directs people to our online risk checker which is a 30
04:30second test you can take which helps diagnose your risk of prostate cancer and hopefully get you on
04:34the right pathway and i'd urge anybody to who's got concerns about prostate cancer to go and check that
04:40out it's a very easy thing you can do um but yeah absolutely i think just using football as the
04:45vehicle to raise awareness and get men thinking about their health is a really positive thing every 45
04:53minutes a man dies from prostate cancer in the uk so join us this october run walk compete help save
05:00men's lives prostate united organizers hope another strong turnout will build on more than one million
05:07pounds already raised and increase awareness of prostate cancer among communities across the country
