00:45Pedro Sanchez has decided to call early general elections after a weekend of reflection
00:50and following Congress's rejection of the two housing decrees proposed by his administration.
00:56During his address, Sanchez defended his government's record and also acknowledged mistakes
01:02as he directly appealed to citizens to decide the country's future.
01:07The early elections now open a new political battle,
01:10with housing set to become one of the major campaign issues.
01:31The decision also comes amid a wave of protests over the housing crisis,
01:36with demonstrations in dozens of cities and encampments continuing in various parts of Spain.
01:41The social unrest is now fully entering the electoral race leading up to November 29.
01:54Hundreds of French high schools remained shut on Monday
01:58after the French high school students' union has called for a major day of action on Tuesday.
02:04By late morning, around 413 institutions had been or were still subject to actions or disruptions
02:11according to the Ministry of National Education.
02:15The Ministry, which had reported 564 schools were affected at around midday on Friday last week,
02:22said the drop was due to sustained dialogue with high school students.
02:26Since the start of the movement in early September, 24 schools had been burned or ransacked.
02:33In response to the violence seen in recent days,
02:36the government is now hoping to pass a bill to make those who are responsible for damaging public property
02:42pay for repairs themselves instead of drawing from taxpayer money.
02:52The United States confirmed on Sunday that it has withdrawn all B-1 bombers from the RAF Fairford Air Base,
02:58which has been at the center of a counterterrorism probe after a mysterious security incident last month.
03:05Police were called to the base in southwest England on 27 September
03:09after a local farmer reported a group of men with several vans engaged in, quote,
03:14suspicious activity.
03:16The scare forced evacuations at 85 homes near the airbase,
03:20which was used by the United States to launch strikes on Iran.
03:25Investigators did not find any explosives in the vans,
03:28but instead, a quantity of petrol was recovered according to counterterrorism police.
03:34Speculation about the motives behind the incident ranged from terror threat to fuel thievery,
03:39as energy prices in the UK hit record highs this week.
03:43UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said there were strong indications that Iran played a part in the incident,
03:49a charge rejected by Tehran.

03:55including a UK-Iranian dual national,
03:58were released on bail pending further investigation.

04:36Bolsonaro had just over 56 million votes,
04:38compared with around 53.7 million for Lula.
04:41The 45-year-old Bolsonaro, an ally of Donald Trump and son of former President Jair Bolsonaro,
04:48said the results showed that Brazil wanted change.
04:52Lula, seeking a fourth non-consecutive term,
04:55described the result as unexpected after hoping to win outright in the first round.
05:00Both candidates now have three weeks to appeal to moderate voters who backed other candidates.
05:05Third-place candidate Augusto Currie said he would endorse neither contender,
05:11while Ronaldo Callao and Renan Santos had previously taken the same position.
05:16Four years ago, Lula narrowly defeated Jair Bolsonaro for the presidency.
05:29The 2026 Nobel Prize in Medicine has been awarded to US psychiatrist and neurologist Carl Deseroth
05:35and his German colleagues Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for their work on optogenetics.
05:40So that was great to talk about.
05:43The technique allows researchers to use light to control specific nerve cells
05:47and study how they shape memories, feelings and behavior in the living brain.
05:53The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institute said their discoveries had laid the foundations
05:57for a new era in neuroscience.
06:02Nobel Committee Chair Per Swenningson said optogenetics offer opportunities to map the brain
06:07in ways scientists could only once dream of.
06:13Optogenetics is now being used in laboratories around the world
06:16and experts call the findings critical to understanding autoimmune diseases
06:20such as type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
06:261.1 million euros in prize money will be shared between these three laureates
06:30and the award ceremony will take place on December the 10th.
06:39The euro has fallen to its lowest level against the dollar in 17 months
06:44touching 1.1161 dollars after four straight weeks of losses.
06:50This comes as political and fiscal worries in France and Spain are reviving memories of the
06:56eurozone debt crisis.
06:58In France, the gap between French and German 10-year bond yields is around 146 basis points,
07:05its biggest weekly jump in 17 years.
07:09And the French 10-year yield is close to a 24-year high.
07:13Spain added to the political uncertainty on Monday
07:16when Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called a snap general election
07:20after the parliament rejected two of his minority government's housing decrees on Friday.

08:11and schools are closing for lack of children.
08:13One such place is the small eastern Aegean island of Thímena,
08:16where the elementary school has just two students this year.
08:20When the children are ending in the district,
08:22the school will be in the school,
08:24and when they pass some years later, they will be closed.
08:27Thímena has no preschool or middle school.
08:30The island's six teenagers must take the boat to neighboring Kfourny island
08:34every morning to attend school.
08:37The child is only in the school.
08:39He doesn't have any other children to play,
08:43to play, to play, to play, to play, to play, to play, to play, to play, to play.
08:46It's only his child.
08:47He has now, he has a first-time job, and he plays with it.
08:51Just two first weeks,
08:52connect Thímena with Athens.
08:54The journey takes at least eight hours
08:56and includes a transfer at Fourny.

10:11The Greek government has announced incentives for people to relocate permanently from the cities to the islands and villages.
10:18But with inflation rising continuously, these incentives don't appear to be enough.
