00:00all right let's try it again jerry jones can you hear us
00:04uh it sounds like a grand grand introduction at the circus coming on here well jerome jerome
00:15jones well hey good to be on with you guys you know how we like to do we like to
00:20butter you up
00:20and then uh get to those hard-hitting questions you know no no that's surely not the way it works
00:27so from a from a player standpoint from an asset standpoint what was it about joey porter jr
00:36that made him such a desirable addition for the cowboys well we saw it today at uh yesterday at
00:44practice and uh uh he's uh he's uh we've got some different aspects to him uh that are pluses
00:53uh as a uh as a player as an athlete as uh his uh his skills and so um we
01:01hope that uh
01:02uh we hope that this is not only uh an improvement in our just generally our personnel but we hope
01:10it
01:11can really uh be one that uh that he really finds his level of of of if you will abilities
01:21or level
01:21to perform on the field i would hope with mirror maybe the uh george pickens uh move that uh brought
01:29him in and uh i know that's pretty high bar that's pretty high expectations but uh you have to have
01:36them to make a trade like this were the kind of injury woes across the secondary any factor in this
01:43deal or was this just something that you would want to do even if the team was fully healthy
01:48you know uh it's important in these uh decisions that are a little that are at very best open-ended
01:56as to what the result's going to be but it's important to think big are you and uh this is
02:03a
02:03this is over in that big thought area about uh about what we can do to help our defense are
02:09you
02:09expecting him to be uh available then on sunday well i don't know but uh he uh had some good
02:16reps
02:16yesterday let's see how today's practice goes okay does does this move specifically then mean that
02:22you're all right that's it we did what i said we were going to do we made some big bold
02:26moves
02:26or are you still willing to add more to what you see as a win now team
02:34uh since being involved with the cowboys it's always fluid uh the next day and uh there is uh there's
02:44no uh you can't sit still there's always uh uh just the very nature of the game the evolving process
02:50of a one just look at it from just uh from just the player standpoint uh that's always an evolving
02:58process uh maturation in their careers uh uh going from a rookie and that skill level to a veteran and
03:08and uh potentially uh dare i say it diminish skills uh as uh is sure to happen as time goes
03:15along so
03:16all of that keeps you on your feet every day yeah and that's that's something that's interesting i
03:21think a lot of the fan base jerry has felt like this has been a some bold moves you haven't
03:26seen
03:26anybody just sitting on their hands you're just like they're going out and making decisions they're
03:30getting players they're adding to this and a while back or somebody in the rangers organization said
03:34they were tired of getting their butts kicked all the time and that motivated them to make some big
03:38moves what was the has been the motivation for you guys to say we're trying to force this thing to
03:43win
03:44now i look back uh as far back as a couple years ago uh we uh uh needed to improve
03:55uh overall here if
03:57you can uh and i don't i look at mainly what's happening uh this week uh this month this season
04:05but if you look at the overall picture uh i frankly decided a couple of years ago to uh get
04:14in the
04:14business of reworking what we are defensively and when you hear players like dak prescott kind of to
04:22piggyback with what cory was just saying say to make a win now trade it means a lot and it
04:28shows
04:28you the whole the organization is on the same page what does it mean to you to hear your franchise
04:35poster
04:36player come out and say we appreciate this and we're all on the same page to win right now well
04:43he's
04:44accurate he is accurate and um um there is a level of that at all times it just uh doesn't
04:52work out that
04:53way and so it's convenient to play to put it over in a uh well they're uh they're at this
04:59stage of
05:00the development of their team uh which has everything to do with uh dak because uh number one it's where
05:09you
05:09are at that position and of course uh in his particular case he's a lot more than a quarterback
05:14he's leader but uh there's he's accurately got it pegged uh it is a belief in where we are what
05:23we
05:23can do right now uh i'm not so sure that there's enough to ever have a bright line on that
05:30point are
05:32you in a mode of building for the future are you in the moment of uh uh going down so
05:37you can go up
05:38all of those kinds of things i think there's shades of that there's degrees of that it's it's
05:44not a bright line uh but uh you certainly uh uh it's it's factual that uh we're playing and getting
05:53the players in here and doing things that can affect us against houston this weekend now speaking
05:59of houston do you feel like i realize them being in the afc and not in the division or anything
06:06like
06:06that might kind of hamper that but do you feel like there's a true rivalry with the texans well
06:12i'd love to play houston every year uh not when they've got as good a team as i think they
06:18do right
06:19now the record doesn't state how capable they are in my view but uh i would love to play houston
06:25every
06:26year uniquely uh they are a natural rivalry for us uh go for us far back before bob mcnair in
06:35between
06:35bud adams uh i've always had an unbelievable appreciation for the interest in football
06:44and uh if you will the hands-on the talent uh the uh if you will and i use that
06:51word a lot just the
06:52ethos of that houston aspect uh speaks football to me if you took the texas players off the board of
07:02the great players at arkansas where i played college uh you would have a a lot of that board
07:10uh not up there for of all conference or all americans texas has always been a big thing so
07:17i got here with an appreciation for what texas means to uh football and football playing the houston
07:25area is that and where i'm going with this is when they didn't have a team when bud moved to
07:30tennessee
07:30when they didn't have a team i was the lead dog in trying to get a team into houston that's
07:37odd
07:37because uh you'd like to say jerry don't you want the cowboys to have it all to yourself
07:42i knew that it was the better for the cowboys it was better for interest in the cowboys to have
07:49a
07:49really great pro team in texas and so uh i was uh it was a great to have bob mcnair
07:57come out of
07:57woodwork down there and really lead that and bring that team to the point it is today yes i'm
08:04considered a rivalry that we haven't fully exploited so when you say natural rivalry there
08:12have been mechanisms in college football in the past where they've pushed like hey these teams need
08:17to play each other this year could you ever see the nfl leaning into something like that where like
08:21the jets play the giants every year and y'all play the texans every year kind of like college football
08:26manipulates their schedule to do so well uh we we do that in many other areas for many other things
08:34and you can add that in the mix and i'm not saying it's not in the mix it's just that
08:40other things come
08:41up and you have a different reason for the scheduling we obviously have a rotation involved that
08:47is the best as far as uh fair uh fair uh complete competition year in year out around the entire
08:56league but uh it's certainly something that i would look at and i wouldn't just narrow it down to
09:01dallas and houston i'd i'd look at the entire league you saw a game on tv last night between cleveland
09:08and pittsburgh that's uh they're in the same division but uh those kinds of proximities those kinds of
09:15of uh my town against your town who's the best town which i think is a fundamental of our game
09:23of
09:23football my town against your town my school against your school uh that's a big part of it
09:29it's hard to emulate any place but in the united states to uh get that rolling and all that being
09:36said jerry you know a lot of a lot of the media members have been discussing this openly and they
09:41say must win and use words like that specifically with both these teams and their records being
09:46where they are how important is a win for the cowboys then this week to you well i don't know
09:52how to state it in a way that makes it any less important than it is uh you have games
09:59that are must
10:00win and then should you not win them the very next minute you're looking to the next game
10:08and more often than not it surely doesn't mean must in the sense that life's over if you don't win
10:15it
10:15for that year or for that competition so that uh they're all that way they're all very important
10:22because you need to win that game even if it's uh relative to where we are with our one and
10:30two
10:30records uh it's going to be uh important to us to be trite uh when we played 12 games
10:37every game will bite your butt if you uh end up on the lost column you don't want to butt
10:44being bit
10:44no you you were on with our morning show as you are every week on tuesday sean and rj and
10:52one of
10:53the things that y'all talked about was game management and discussing to see if any tweaks could be made
10:58what were the results of that and did y'all find any changes that perhaps need to be made
11:05there's always in a game that is controlled chaos uh the plays you vex and o it and you put
11:14it up on
11:14the board and you walk through it and you may even uh two-thirds of the way run through it
11:20but when it
11:22actually happens uh then uh it doesn't end up the way the x's and o's are uh there's mistakes across
11:30the board and uh the actual mistakes are actually counted on although you don't know which way it's
11:36gonna where it's gonna happen and so in a game that capitalizes on mistakes that makes the plays
11:43on mistakes mistakes physically and mentally in a game that is based on that then you're very likely to
11:51be looking at a play and say we made a mistake now the only way to address that but it
11:58is the way
11:59is to uh be aware of it define it define it as if you're an individual player as to your
12:07role in
12:08the play or mistake and correct it now again you're going to go back out there this week and make
12:15some
12:15more mistakes but uh you hope that you don't make the one that you're trying to correct that you had
12:22a
12:22bad consequence for but it's a game of of correcting both sides of the ball all the time and uh
12:28if you
12:29look hard you'll see mistakes being made every time a ball is snapped well does that take away from
12:34things no not at all it's a beautiful game but it's based upon someone applying pressure uh 80 percent
12:42of the time uh on a play when it have been better if they had been 110 percent on that
12:48particular play
12:49is a bad time to leave me lucille on that play to have been a little soft because it messed
12:54up an
12:55otherwise good play that's the game is it safe to assume that from shoddy to parker to sorenson
13:03you still have a belief in your decision makers to make those fixes as we go along this season
13:09you can one thousand percent assume that the confidence is there uh what is important to
13:17understand is that i knew that you were going to have mistakes have always known you were going to
13:22have mistakes uh only surpassed by maybe the ones that i made yesterday and so that's what we do we
13:30get in and and uh look at those mistakes and by the way we get some encouragement by the ones
13:37that we
13:37didn't make or the ones somebody else made that let us look good doing what we'd planned to do
13:44jerry your left tackle tyler guy i'm not even sure i understood that
13:50but but it but it was out there and now it exists and we'll be able to listen back to
13:54it
13:54tyler guyton's looking like a stud left tackle right now how much have you enjoyed him growing
14:00and progressing uh growing up this year well i'm leery of projections always have been bitten more than
14:09i've had smiles on projections but as a defensive player that was moved to the offense
14:16uh we've had more some great stories in this franchise's history of the two and a's and the
14:23nate newton's that moved from defense to offense and certainly he had had that when he was in college
14:29great athlete great feet great feet and certainly has all of the physical intangibles uh so could he
14:38uh take that and do one of the things is execute enough reps so that you have confidence as a
14:47player
14:47that uh that just becomes a part of your makeup i can do that on to the next deal uh
14:53he's done that
14:54he's doing that and it's exciting because boy does he have the gifts the feet the length to be
15:02an outstanding left tackle well i'm proud of him that that being said and like uh how excited
15:08then do you kind of get i know we're looking a little bit further ahead but about seeing him
15:12next to tyler guyton and seeing that left side of your offensive line when he returns
15:18you're talking tyler smith yes sir yeah yeah exactly and uh uh again uh we don't have uh time to
15:27make an
15:27obvious statement we don't have him this weekend right so i haven't spent a lot of time thinking about
15:32how good it's going to be when he gets here really you can't afford that uh but uh i'm really
15:38pleased
15:38with how we're playing without tyler uh could we be a better team with him of course a lot of
15:44people
15:45think he's the best gardener in the whole nfl so uh he would have made some difference and he will
15:51make a difference when he gets back but boy i'm proud of the way the guys are playing without him
15:56look at jerry right there kevin one game at a time okay i like it this is kind of a
16:02one game at a time question have you been able to see with your eyes the improvements on the
16:09defense because the advanced statistics like epa says that there has not been a improvement in the
16:14defense thus far this season from the start of this season to this last game against the ravens what
16:19have you seen outside of the numbers with your eyes uh if you don't look at the hole which is
16:27what
16:28your stats look at if you don't look at the hole uh if you look at the individuals and some
16:35of the
16:35real good things they're doing then you come up with we've got the people that can do it that's not
16:43i'm not saying that cavalierly that's a big statement we've got the people that could do it we've got people
16:49on the way i.e. availability because of injury uh that can do it that are getting better better
16:57uh but it is new it is new to the players working together with uh the coaching staff and uh
17:06you're
17:07seeing the uh inconsistency uh you're looking for waldo all the time and that's uh not good uh but i'm
17:17seeing
17:17more and more confidence that we are on the right track is that same confidence shared in the pass
17:26rush because this is always your chance to talk to the fans steven's talked about that in the past
17:30the fan base from all the feedback we get is very leery and i have to admit i am as
17:36well about the lack
17:37of production for the pass rush thus far what has been the problem there and what is a potential
17:44solution or two what you are seeing is a pursuit of and uh a goal of having the closing part
17:56of the
17:56pass rush actually getting the getting the sack sure uh what you're seeing is let's do that and pursue
18:07that at the same time check the run first so that you make sure that you've got your run covered
18:16and
18:16earn the right to get a pass rush and what our problems have been in my view over the last
18:23few
18:23years is that uh we've had some rush at times but we sure left holes in the run game so
18:31what you're
18:32seeing is a real effort to get that balance uh as close as we can with some very competent players
18:39i'm really pleased with how some of our young players which are critical to us uh how they are
18:46accomplishing check the run earn the right and then get you a pass rush now close it
18:55one of those guys specifically being number 55 jay sean barham that dude's playing at an extremely
19:00high level for a rookie i mean maybe even a really good level for a younger player as well are
19:06we
19:06getting ahead of ourselves or do you see the real deal with him well i don't think we're ahead of
19:11ourselves because you we and he deserves to have some successes uh as he goes along one of the things
19:20i love about him is something he's having to uh uh really uh uh get uh get over uh when
19:29he
19:29uh he runs at such a high energy level that it's easy for him to uh exhaust some of that
19:40top end play
19:41uh so uh learning how to measure himself is very important and uh he'll go to exhaustion and he'll go
19:51quick to exhaustion but then he becomes uh frustrated which you kind of love this he becomes really
19:59frustrated when he uh uh doesn't have the steam to get where he wants to be so a combination of
20:06all
20:06of that a mouthful again but a combination of all of that says competitor competitor competitor
20:13his physical attributes are off the charts that means he'll do the work too to make sure he's in
20:19condition for all right jerry last thing before we let you go i've been i have been fascinated by
20:24how you have you guys have conducted the thing with george pickens and y'all are in the agreement
20:29that you're going to go through this season and then he's got opportunities with the cowboys with
20:34maybe other teams whatever it is there's all sorts of things they're kind of curious on the trade with
20:39porter jr do y'all have interest in signing him long term down the road yes the answer is yes
20:46and i really
20:47don't need to embellish that uh on the other hand uh we've uh by the very nature of the trade
20:56uh we're
20:57working on the under a uh existing contract with an extended contract uh think about it think about
21:05it hard let's get in here and let's make each other feel a little better about where we are not
21:10a little
21:11better and these guys case it's a monster amount in their lives of a contract at this level but by
21:18the same token there's two to tango here there's the team and our being comfortable with making that
21:24kind of commitment uh what you're seeing in both those cases is uh working through a reasonable way
21:32to advance the ball advance the ball being get up uh be an outstanding player as well as having a
21:39outstanding contract uh that's what you're seeing uh and uh i'm satisfied that we were able to do this
21:47with george a lot of credit goes to everybody involved particularly brian schottenheimer brian was
21:54very helpful and they have a great relationship and so uh that's the way to work through this
21:59problem this thing is not a perfect sink uh in our agreement uh in our overall if i dare say
22:08uh labor agreement and um it gives uh a lot of leverage to uh both parties so when you see
22:17it
22:17work out the way it is with george uh you've got to say look that's people working together
22:22well we appreciate the time as always and really looking forward to this sunday's game
22:28best of luck we'll catch you next friday
22:33dan a little bit of that double talk i've been giving you guys here i apologize that's okay that's
22:39i hope it's okay yeah we get used to it all right thanks jerry i'm satisfied if you are all
22:46right
22:46sure that's good yeah thanks sir
22:48thank you guys
22:48thank you guys
