00:00He must be in a great mood because he is calling in early every Tuesday at this time on Sean
00:05and RJ.
00:06It's Jerry Jones brought to you by your North Texas Ford dealers.
00:09Hopefully giddy like we were on Monday after the thriller in Houston.
00:15Of course, tomorrow, coverage on the home of the Cowboys right here against Tampa Bay.
00:18Let's preview, discuss everything with Jerry Jones on 105.3 The Fan.
00:23Good morning, Jerry. How are you?
00:25Hey, I'm doing great. You nailed it. I'm raring to go.
00:28But, man, coach, I'm hot.
00:31But, guys, it's great to be on with you, and it's really great to, frankly, get right to it two
00:39or three days after Houston.
00:42And so excited about that, excited about this game coming up tomorrow night.
00:48Jerry, let's get your thoughts, though, on the win, as thrilling as it was.
00:52I mean, did it feel like deja vu all over again from Baltimore with what you guys were going through?
00:57Oh, it really did.
00:59I just had to catch myself thinking, boy, here we are right back, relatively speaking, in the same kind of
01:08situation.
01:10But, again, it just shows what a difference the outcome makes to be tried.
01:16And it was exciting.
01:18We were sitting there with a lot of Cowboy fans.
01:20I was surrounded by Cowboy fans.
01:23And that just made it that much better.
01:27But it sure made it tense in those last few seconds.
01:30Jerry, what changed offensively in the second half with Schottenheimer calling the plays,
01:35the legendary performance from C.D. Lamb, and the clutchness of Dak Prescott?
01:39Can you just talk about what they did in that second half?
01:44Yeah, of course, you can't at all take away from Dak and how he played
01:50and how all the receivers played, really, not just Pickens and C.D.,
01:55but the others played well, too.
01:58But what I was impressed with is our front on both sides of the ball.
02:03Our offensive front really had an outstanding game.
02:08They played, they really played well when you look at the front that Houston has.
02:18And so I was pleased with that.
02:20And then I really thought that our front defensive guys or big guys up front
02:25were the difference in how we were able to play some good defense.
02:31Jerry, it's not going to work out every time,
02:33but I feel like when Dak Prescott has the ball at the end of the game,
02:38way more often than not, he's going to get it done.
02:40What are you thinking?
02:41You've watched a lot of football, had a lot of great quarterbacks.
02:44How are you feeling when Dak Prescott has the ball at the end?
02:48I feel the same way because you're given the chance to do it,
02:54which is, in most cases, protection.
02:57But it can be the ability to get some game with that running game,
03:03which is really vital if you want to take it the length of the field
03:07to keep that running thread out there at all times
03:10or keep that production out there.
03:12But you just feel like that Dak is going to have you in the right place.
03:16He's going to give you the best chance.
03:18Now, the reason to be, again, trite, that we design these plays
03:23is that there's the best place to go.
03:25There's the best thing that could happen to you on defense
03:29when you get under center or stand back there and get ready to snap that ball.
03:35If it's there, you feel like that he's not going to miss it.
03:38And that's saying a lot because it's missed a lot by other people.
03:45And so we've got the best of it right there.
03:48He's going to give you the best chance to go where the ball ought to go.
03:52Jerry Jones, Cowboys owner and general manager,
03:54with us here on Sean and RJ on 105.3 The Fan.
03:57Jerry, you know, there's a lot of talk from the guys leading up to the season
04:00about this acronym.
04:01They have Gotti of greatest offense there is.
04:04That's what they want to be.
04:05How close do you think this offense is to reaching those sort of high,
04:09you know, expectations that they set for themselves?
04:13Well, closer than we were when they came up with Gotti.
04:17And the reason is we've endured our Smith injury at guard,
04:24which is huge and was huge to not have him those first four ballgames.
04:30And I'm not for sure if he's going to be there tomorrow night or not,
04:34but that's big because in the meantime, we've had some depth,
04:39get some real good snaps, get some real good experience.
04:43I have underlined for our show today the value of repetition in football.
04:50And I underlined that because I want to be sure and make the point.
04:54We are getting some great repetition.
04:56We're playing a lot of players.
04:57And we're playing some depth out there when some of the ones,
05:01especially in the secondary, get back.
05:03We've got depth that's getting repetition out there.
05:06This makes you better.
05:08It's frankly the only way, apart from becoming available if you've been hurt,
05:14the only way to improve is repetition.
05:16And so what we're doing on defense is we're getting a lot of snaps,
05:22we're getting a lot of repetition out there.
05:23That's what happened the first four games.
05:27In general, I'm a believer that the future is going to be more toward less in preseason.
05:36In other words, there will be a reduction in preseason games.
05:39And you'll see more of your early games where the teams are evolving
05:45and get that early repetition when they've got some, dare I say it, ragged
05:54or need just more repetition to be repetitious.
05:59The bottom line is that I think you're seeing,
06:03and I'm hoping that this idea will really be relevant and prevailing in our season this year.
06:13Jerry, what is going to determine Tyler Smith playing tomorrow night?
06:17Him.
06:18Just him.
06:19How he feels about that hand.
06:21And now that's a big deal, that hand.
06:23And we all understand it in an offensive lineman.
06:26Boy, he's got to punch it.
06:27And, I mean, that thumb or that hand has to really be ready to take a beating out there
06:34because without it, you can't do much.
06:37And so, but it's up to him.
06:40He'll have a feel for it.
06:41He'll have a feel as the game is going.
06:44He'll see if he's reluctant in any way because of the mental aspects of it.
06:51But he's ready to play.
06:52He can play.
06:53And I mean play at that level that we used to see him right now.
06:58We'll just let him feel it out and see if he wants to go.
07:01You know, the issue is those roster spots get real valuable before the game.
07:07And you say, well, let him go out there and try it out and see.
07:10Well, you'd like to have that roster spot if he's not going to be able to go
07:14when he tries it out.
07:17Jerry, in regards to Tyler, the organization, the fan in me looks at this as like,
07:21you know, they can start a backup quarterback over there in Tampa.
07:24You can beat that team without him.
07:26You know, Bass is a good player.
07:28Give him more rest.
07:29Do organizations look at it the same way when deciding when to bring a player back?
07:34No, you certainly have a better chance if the main quarterback isn't playing.
07:44But all you've got to do is look at some games.
07:46This year, look at history.
07:48And the backup quarterback comes in and wins a lot of games, especially this time of year.
07:55You really do have success with backup quarterbacks early because there's other things
08:03that are getting teams compromised or getting them beaten.
08:08So, if you're going to play backup quarterback, in my mind, the time to do it is in the early
08:12part of the year.
08:13And, of course, that's where we are with Tampa.
08:16Jerry, was Joey Porter Jr. everything you were anticipating he would be when he was out there on Sunday?
08:22Yes, more.
08:23I didn't expect him to be out there materially Sunday.
08:28Although we were talking about having those many snaps, he really gave a good accounting of what he was doing,
08:37how he was doing it.
08:38But it shows me, shows us, that as he works into knowledge and the coordination that it takes to play
08:45back there,
08:46that he's got a real spot that will help us.
08:50His physical abilities will serve us.
08:54They just don't go there because they know what he's capable of, and he's basically got him covered out there.
09:01Now, he will get tested.
09:05He's not Deion Sanders out there.
09:08But where they just don't go there.
09:10He will get tested.
09:11But I was real pleased with what we got out of him Sunday.
09:15Jerry, every fan at home was just saying, put him on Nico Collins.
09:19Just let him follow him with the defensive scheme and all that goes into that.
09:24Were you finding yourself saying that?
09:25And how can that work in Christian Parker's system throughout a game where you're just saying,
09:30just let Joey Porter follow their number one?
09:32Well, the system allows for you to man up like that and really isolate up like that.
09:40The system does allow that.
09:42And his coverage skills can dictate your thinking in that direction.
09:47So you're not off base at all.
09:50And we can use him outside on teaming up with guys especially.
09:55So that's what he brings to the table.
10:00In a manner of speaking, he's different.
10:03He really is.
10:04He's got some exceptional aspects to him.
10:07That's why we traded for him and feel really fortunate.
10:10I really was excited when we got that trade done.
10:13Jerry, literally on the flip side, De'Ron Bland is taking a beating from the fan base
10:19and the media, us included.
10:22What do you think of De'Ron's play?
10:24And how worried should we be about teams just focusing in on him now that you have Porter
10:29on the other side?
10:31Well, I think Duran, Bland just got better when you get absent injury.
10:39When you get a Porter out there, he just has a chance to get better.
10:42That's tough duty out there when you're being picked on.
10:48But that was not unexpected.
10:53And you can see that you get some of these great receivers.
10:59And they can make an honest man out of you out there no matter what your skill level is.
11:06So I'm not as – I understand how our fans could be concerned.
11:12You hate to see those early mistakes like we got right off the bat at Houston.
11:19But I'm not as concerned as you might think.
11:22I think Bland, given what's on the way with our injury situation, plus they had been a Porter,
11:31I think we've gotten some relief here.
11:33Jerry Jones joining us here on 105 Through the Fan.
11:35I want to take you back to near the end of the first half and the attempted 65-yarder for
11:43Brandon Aubrey.
11:44Were you in favor of attempting that kick?
11:47Would you have liked to see them punt the ball away and leave Houston with much more of a field
11:53to work with
11:54as opposed to such a short field to get some points before the half?
11:58Well, obviously, when you miss the kick – and I don't say that condescending – when you miss the kick,
12:04you'd rather have gotten the field position.
12:08But we've got a weapon there, and that's standard operating procedure.
12:15As a matter of fact, if you had a way to say it, that's in the book.
12:19He fell within the yards, the distance.
12:23We had time to come back if what happened to us happened to us.
12:27And so Coach made the call the way he's planned on making it for days and days and weeks and
12:36weeks and weeks.
12:36That fell within the criteria.
12:40He makes those and makes most of them and should make them.
12:45And we've got work to do on our protection, and that's very fixable, very.
12:53That shouldn't happen.
12:55And so that's not criticism.
12:57It's just very fixable.
12:59That's the good news.
13:00The problem isn't with the kicker.
13:02The problem's with the protection there, and we can fix that.
13:07I'm shocked, though, that it happened two weeks in a row.
13:11That doesn't happen very often because you've got a chance to really point and work on that.
13:16Jerry, you told us last week you were evaluating everything about the game management process after Baltimore.
13:22How much did your protocols change this past week against Houston, and how different are they going to be moving
13:27forward?
13:28Well, and again, I want to emphasize just to make the point.
13:33You mentioned the word you were evaluating everything.
13:37We were evaluating everything, which most of all includes starting with head coach going right on down.
13:43That's not uncommon.
13:45There's an evaluation goes on even when you don't have something that you'd like to have back.
13:51That was that case there.
13:53We'd like to obviously have it back.
13:54But that does create intense, intense evaluation of everything, the procedures, the timing, the time on it before the week
14:09is out,
14:09before you get out in the situation on the field.
14:13But that's what it calls for.
14:16That's what it's all about.
14:18You can take any play, and you can pick things out of that play that you've got to work on,
14:24or it's going to bite you.
14:26And we've gotten bit here in our basic kicking game and really the fundamentals,
14:38which is some of the decision-making before we even kick it.
14:42But I'll assure you that's being evaluation.
14:45That's not punishment.
14:47That's called you do that when it doesn't work.
14:51Everybody has to do that.
14:53We all do it in our mirror, and we all do it that way.
14:55I'm not trying to arm wave here.
14:57But we really, I can't tell you the intense work we've got on working on those procedures to get better.
15:05Jerry, you know, you're talking about those procedures.
15:07Ryan Feeder, your game management coordinator, who obviously is a big influence in Coach Schottenheimer and what he does there.
15:14Do you sit in on some of the meetings that he has during the week?
15:17What are those like?
15:18What are the things they go over, and what do you think you get from having an extra voice in
15:23the process of the decision-making?
15:24Well, let me just answer your question this way.
15:27When you're the ultimate decision-maker, and I have that privilege in many areas,
15:33the one you need the most work on is in the mirror.
15:38That's the cat right there that you need to get right, and you need to be honest with yourself.
15:43And you need to say, how much are you making that decision, or dare I say influencing that decision?
15:53Because sometimes people are just background noise, and you're just making the decision.
15:59Sometimes you're literally looking for the direction to go, and you're making decisions between two or three different opinions.
16:07How much are you using all of that staff and all of that information?
16:12Is it just a total process of what you call natural?
16:17If you catch yourself on the wrong end of a couple of decisions, you really have to go back to
16:24the mirror.
16:25And I'll assure you, Shadi or any of his delegations there are going back to that mirror.
16:33That's the culprit in the mirror.
16:35Jerry Jones, brought to you by your North Texas four dealers here on 105.3 The Fan.
16:40The improvement, the growth of Tyler Guyton.
16:43Jerry is jumping out to everyone.
16:45What are you seeing from him at left tackle?
16:50I guess I'm not so sure it's not the highlight so far this year because of his skill level.
16:58He's got some of the best feats you'll ever see in sport or certainly playing left tackle in the NFL.
17:08And he has quite a background.
17:11He comes from defense on a personal basis or on a team personal basis.
17:17Defensive players being converted over to the offensive line.
17:20We've had some great success.
17:21Mark Tunae to go way back, Nathan Newton, and they're scattered throughout the NFL.
17:29He really came from a defense background and then as a Bob to that.
17:34And that was the question, more so than whether he could go from right to left tackle to me,
17:39was where was he in the process of switching from defense to offense?
17:44What we're seeing now, he's focused on it to his credit, which, again, is just a mountain of things to
17:54address.
17:56To his credit, he's evolving into the outstanding player that we need him to be.
18:02And that's the best news.
18:04I'm going to say that may be the best news we've got at this juncture in the season.
18:09Jerry, Schottenheimer said yesterday nobody was happier than George Pickens in that locker room.
18:16How is George doing with kind of a slow start statistically for him?
18:23How is George doing with that early on, especially with the way Seedy is playing in a pressure year for
18:29him contract-wise?
18:31Well, for an individual that gets as much conversation about him that anybody does,
18:45he enjoys this game, and it's so genuine.
18:50It's contagious.
18:51It's contagious among his teammates.
18:54The thing you'll hear almost invariably is what a joy he is to play with on the field.
19:00And you can't enjoy the game if all you're going to be smiling about is if you're catching a ball.
19:08You've got to be happy when other people catch a ball or when you do some things away from the
19:14ball
19:14that create the big play on the other end of the ball.
19:18He has the mentality to be like that.
19:20That's his makeup.
19:21He doesn't have to work on that.
19:23That's his makeup.
19:24It's not everybody's makeup, but it's his.
19:27And that's lost in the shuffle of what George Pickens is about.
19:30He is genuinely happy when things are going good because he knows he's a big part of why those plays
19:40are being made away from him.
19:43Jerry Jones joining us here, 105 through the fan.
19:45Are you open to having talks with both Porter and Pickens during the season?
19:54Again, we don't even have to in any way.
19:57We've got great agreements, and the agreements are in place so that I don't even have to talk about a
20:04question like that.
20:05And I'm not at all preferred by the question.
20:09But we've got that put to bed in terms of their business one way or the other.
20:16Now, I wouldn't answer as to whether or not we visit about any of their business during the season
20:23other than how they're playing or how they're going to play.
20:27Jerry, those are two guys you've had success with so far acquiring in the trade market.
20:33What would it take for you to go ahead and dip back into the trade market again this season?
20:39Well, I think the door is always open to get better.
20:44I know that's almost a cliche.
20:46But if the right – I'm never shut down from trying to get something that would really advance the needle,
20:59especially one that could do it now and into the future.
21:04And, again, I said at the start of training camp,
21:08I'm willing to put some things out there that are for today, lean more today than they would be three
21:17years from now.
21:17Well, that's the future we're talking about.
21:19So I'm open.
21:21We're open.
21:22We've got a trade deadline coming up when you can do some things.
21:25Let's see what happens.
21:27You obviously see that we're in a transition to some degree in the club,
21:34but the transition is so that we can win now as opposed to the transition addressing totally two or three
21:44years from now.
21:45Now, that's a mouthful, and it is obviously almost a dream to be able to address now and improve
21:55as well as really put it in place for the future.
21:58That's maybe an impossible thing to do.
22:02Jerry Jones right here on Sean and RJ every Tuesday, 105.3 The Fan.
22:06What was Shamar James like on the plane ride home, and how much fatherly advice did you give him?
22:13Well, he had all the advice I could give him, sitting on the plane with him, giving him advice.
22:19That is, he had all three of mine, Steve and Charlotte and Jerry on there,
22:26plus he had about six or seven of their children on there.
22:30So he had a good shot at what could maybe be in store,
22:37and I'll give some of that bunch on the plane an A, especially the girls.
22:44I'll give some of that bunch on the plane a D.
22:47I'm not going to mention which boys they were.
22:51But he had a good shot at what you can end up with when you start being a father.
22:57Jerry, last one for you.
22:59Have you created a role already or an opportunity for Tony Romo after the CBS News
23:05and your thoughts on his departure?
23:09Tony is one of the most valued relationships that I have on a personal basis.
23:19I love him, and I'm sorry that he's, I'm sorry that this is a Bob this way this year
23:32because I enjoyed him so much in what he could bring to the NFL,
23:38and frankly, I was proud of him as a former Cowboy.
23:42Now, having said all of that, he's just getting started.
23:46He really is.
23:47And he's, I say that in all, with all sincerity, he's just getting started.
23:55And he certainly has made some mistakes.
24:02And I can't look in my mirror without seeing what can happen when you,
24:10the experience of mistakes.
24:12But he realizes that there's an area of his life that he wants to do better in.
24:23And that's been said ad nauseum publicly.
24:27He's got great opportunity ahead of him.
24:29I don't know of any one, period, that has a better future than Tony Romo.
24:36And I'm excited for him.
24:40He's not only got great talent, but he's a hell of a man.
24:44Jerry, Sunday was awesome.
24:45This was awesome.
24:46Let's make tomorrow night awesome.
24:48We can't wait.
24:49Let's keep it going.
24:50Guys, very much.
24:51Bye.
