A freeride BMX and MTB-style bike build gets put to the test with a new free coaster hub, turning an old bike into a street and park winter setup without brakes. After stripping the bike down, swapping in Michelin Pilot Pump tires and rebuilding it with the FreenightBMX planetary coaster hub, the rider heads to Capital Bikepark, Hangaren, and the Dome to see how the hub feels in fakies, manuals, tail taps, bar spins, and bigger jumps.

The ride starts with the familiar weirdness of a free coaster: less resistance, more speed when landing backwards, and a very different feel compared with a cassette hub. Across the parks, the video tracks how the hub handles moonwalk-style pedaling, fakie lines, 180s, truck drivers, and air tricks, while also noting the importance of crank stopper setup and gearing changes. It is part bike build, part MTB freecoaster hub review, and part real-world park session.

By the end, the verdict is clear: the slack is manageable, the engagement feels reliable, and the hub adds a new layer of creativity for street riding, park riding, and BMX-style freestyle. The only real drawback comes with heavier gearing, which changes how the hub engages and makes fakie riding less ideal.

Created for fans searching for free coaster hub review, MTB bike build, BMX park riding, street and park setup, fakie tricks, tail taps, bar spins, and freeride bike testing. It also fits search intent for BMX freecoaster testing, planetary coaster hub impressions, and real riding feedback from skatepark sessions and big jump practice.

00:06so this is my old bike I'm gonna make it my street slash park winter bike and I'm
00:13gonna run it brakeless with a free coaster hub thanks to Fionite BMX for hooking me up with
00:26this insane hub I can't wait to try it out but first of all I'm gonna strip this one off
00:31the
00:31brakes I got some super nice Michelin pilot pump tires that I'm gonna try out and then just put
00:36on my some of my old parts on the bike and see how it feels yeah let's start
01:03so the bike is finally built up and I think it looks pretty sick I'm gonna go to various amounts
01:09of skate parks and try out the hub and also just try out my street skills yeah I will give
01:15you a
01:15review later hopefully it's sick
01:26capital bike park today trying out the free coaster doing a lot of fakies and a lot of fakies
01:53stuff with my cassette and the brake but it's so different with the free coaster because when
01:58you land backwards you actually gain speed so it feels super street and super real I kind of want
02:03to step that trick up on the spine low maybe the bar spin in it but yeah it's scary in
02:08the beginning
02:08and this feels like a totally different bike because it is but yeah it feels hard and scary
02:15hard
03:10So the hub I think it's working like this like when you go forward it's like a normal cassette
03:14and the slack it's actually not that bad I'm gonna do a full review later in this video but until
03:21now I'm super stoked on how it works and I had high expectations for this hub but there is exceeded
03:28fully
03:29so stoked
03:39so another park another bike yeah it's gonna be fun to try it out and this park is a bit
03:44street oriented
03:45or actually not it has kind of everything yeah I'm gonna start this session by doing some street riding
03:50180 freaky stuff just try out the free coaster
04:06I actually noticed that I can pedal forwards while going backwards so I'm gonna try out to do that and
04:13there yeah it's kind of hard to be honest
04:37so I think the moonwalk thing looks pretty cool but it's actually super hard to keep the balance while
04:43pedaling forward anyway I'm gonna try out the boxyampline now maybe do some cool stuff and see how the free
04:51coaster feels in the air
04:52I don't know
04:53I just want you to lean on a lot Stop bitch
05:07so you can get some good stuff Hey
05:34Okay box jumps definitely worked, it's worked, but I wanna try the ball
05:39now and also do some tail taps. It was super hard when I had to brake this bike, because
05:45you had the slack and no brake to adjust, but I think it will be possible now, so let's
05:51try out the ball.
06:17Okay, I guess tail tap works. Okay, so we're at the last spot of the video, at the dome.
06:22I'm gonna try the free coaster hub in the air, doing some bigger tricks.
06:49I kind of feel like some tricks are faster, like bar spins, because when you do the bar
06:54spins you actually move the feet of it.
06:56It makes it a bit faster to adjust, and also on turn-offs, because you move the cranks
07:01a bit, it goes super fast to snap it in, and I really feel that.
07:05But on the down side, on the big guns, I don't have that much crankstopper on now, so when
07:10I land, actually it feels like the feet aren't on the pedal, because it weighs down, so I might
07:17need to get more crankstopper, and yeah, I think it will be better then.
07:34To summarize these days, trying out the hub, I have been thinking about some stuff before
07:40trying it, and then during, and also now after riding it a couple of months, and the first
07:45thing I was worried about before was the slack, like how was it going to impact my riding, could
07:50I do tail taps with it, could I even ride without thinking about it all the time.
07:54To my surprise the slack wasn't that big, and I was worried about like riding, when you ride
08:01chainless, and you forget about that you don't have a chain, then you just pedal and fly over
08:05your bars, or hit your knee in the stem or something, and it's the worst thing ever, and that never
08:10happened to me on the bike, and I'm super stoked on that.
08:14Also with the tail taps, as you saw in the video, I did it in the skate park, with the
08:18bike with the brake, and that actually worked good, because you could land, pinch your brake,
08:23and then just pedal in, but with a brakeless bike, it was super hard, like I think I would
08:29have needed to like ride it for a long time before being able to do tail taps.
08:32So the next thing I was thinking about was the engagement, I was a bit worried that it was
08:37going to engage in the wrong situations, like doing huge 180s and stuff, and land, and then just
08:43not be aware of the pedalling backwards, but it never really happened while doing those kind of
08:48stuff. I did notice that it engages when I did like, let's say bar spin to fakies, because then I
08:54jumped up, and then when you do the bar spin you actually move the feet of it forward, and then
08:58it
08:58did some engaging while landing backwards, and also on some truck drivers to fakies and stuff, because
09:04you move your feet that much, but never on like 180 bars and other stuff like that. So yeah, I
09:13really
09:13trust the engagement, like it's super good tuned. There could be some small adjustments to it, but
09:19overall it feels really nice. So the next thing I was worried about was actually riding bigger jumps.
09:29As you saw, I tried it out at the dome, and it was actually easier in some ways, because you
09:34didn't
09:34have any resistance on the cranks, so some tricks like turn downs feels like you can snap them in
09:40faster because you don't pedal backwards and it's just way more smooth. The one thing I noticed though
09:45was that when I did tail whip to bar spins and like no further tricks, I couldn't really feel when
09:51my feet was on the pedals again, because there was no resistance. It felt like my feet was just dropping
09:59through the pedal and like I couldn't really feel it. But when I put on a like harder crankstopper,
10:05it felt better again. So if you're at a free coaster and want to do big jumps, I recommend to
10:10put on a heavy crankstopper. I think a really cool bonus with this hub is that the Moonwalk thing you
10:16saw in the video that you can pedal forwards as long as you pedal slower than you're going backwards,
10:23if that makes sense. That's pretty cool and I think you can do some really cool maneuvers with that if
10:29you want. The only downside I really noticed with the hub was when I changed the gearing to a heavier
10:34one,
10:35because then the hub engages differently. It just goes super like engages faster and it doesn't work
10:41that good in fakies as well because it has like minimum slack. That's if you have a super heavy gearing
10:48and when I ride park I'm not in need of that and also I think I could ride all the
10:53slopestar contests
10:54with a good gearing that that the hub will work with. But yeah, I don't know if you can do
10:59anything
10:59about it really, like because you need to have the slack somehow. Other than that, I just want to say
11:04thank you Freenight BMX for hooking me up with this hub. It was really really fun to try it and
11:10it gives
11:11the riding a bit more creativity. Thank you for watching!
11:23Okay, that wasn't. That's fun!
