On Halloween night in 2022, an 18-year-old was driving a Lexus with three of his friends when he slammed into the back of a school bus that had stopped to drop off a child. The impact was devastating. Two of his friends, a 20-year-old woman and her 19-year-old brother, did not survive the crash. A third passenger, a 17-year-old girl, survived but suffered extremely serious injuries that would continue affecting her long after that night. Fortunately, none of the children aboard the school bus were injured. When officers arrived, bodycam footage captured the 18-year-old standing along the roadside as he began realizing the seriousness of what had happened. Before officers had even begun extensively questioning him, the teenager repeatedly blamed himself for the crash. At different points, he tells officers, "My life is over" and "It was my fault," while also asking how much time he could potentially spend behind bars. The 18-year-old told officers that he had fallen asleep behind the wheel. He also acknowledged using a substance earlier, although exactly what role that played in the crash later became an issue during the court proceedings. As he continued speaking with officers, he repeatedly asked about his friends and eventually helped officers identify the two who had been inside the vehicle. Investigators later determined that the 18-year-old had also been speeding before striking the stopped school bus. He initially faced several serious charges related to the crash. However, questions later emerged surrounding some of the testing performed during the investigation. In February 2025, he pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and aggravated reckless driving as part of an agreement that resulted in another charge being dropped.
Two months later, on April 17th, 2025, he was sentenced to four and a half years in prison. He received credit for the 827 days he had already spent in custody and was also eligible to receive additional credit toward his sentence. What started as four friends driving together on Halloween ended with two young lives lost, another passenger suffering life-changing injuries, and an 18-year-old driver standing on the side of the road telling officers that everything was his fault. This is body-cam footage of the events.
