While the government is keen to focus on airport rail in the north-west of Melbourne in the south-east, construction is well underway on the suburban rail loop. And some communities in its path are not happy with how the project is going. Margaret Paul has a look at the seat of Glen Waverley, where cuts to the SRL are putting the squeeze on car-parking.

00:02It's already hard to find a car park in Glen Waverley.
00:05You come here on a Friday or a Saturday night, you will die.
00:08It's bumper to bumper, people driving around looking for car parking spots.
00:13It's always a hustle to find a car park around here.
00:15When the suburban rail loop came to town, the project cut 400 car parks
00:20but gave some promises.
00:22That they will replace this area here with a new car park.
00:26A 500 space multi-level car park.
00:30But last month the plan was parked.
00:33I respect every single dollar of taxpayers' money.
00:38That is why I am announcing $2 billion in savings for the suburban rail loop.
00:44For Glen Waverley that means this road won't reopen and locals aren't impressed.
00:50We're not against the suburban rail loop but we need car parking.
00:54Car parking means customers, customers mean revenue for all the traders.
00:59The government says it's considering alternatives for car parking.
01:04But it's not the only election issue driving motorists mad.

01:22Glen Waverley is held by the Labor Party on a slim 3.3% margin.
01:27And it's widely expected to change hands in November.
01:30In fact, it's one of a handful of Labor-held seats in the eastern suburbs
01:34that could go to the Liberal Party.
01:36A crucial community deciding where to park its vote.
01:41There's also something at the Liberal Party on a slight scale,
