00:00The big gameplay reveal for GTA 6 has come and gone, and I'm surprised by how mixed I am on
00:05it.
00:05In some ways, I'm more excited than ever to play it. Vice City gives an amazing first impression.
00:10I'm already convinced that this will be the special sort of open world that you just want to exist in.
00:15Rockstar is packing it full of little activities and human touches that might make GTA 6 a borderline life sim.
00:21I'm seeing a lot of stuff that I want to do.
00:23But the bits in between all that, those fragments of story missions, were less impressive.
00:27I was hoping 13 years would change the shape of GTA's authored action.
00:32But Rockstar is still very much working with the same tools, judging by what we've seen.
00:36In the first mission, we see Jason and Lucia doing a drug deal for Booby Ike, and I bet you
00:40can guess what happens.
00:41The pairs show up, things are tense, and then the deal goes wrong when the cops show up.
00:46Our heroes shoot their way out of the building.
00:48A mission shown off later in the video takes place further in the story.
00:51Jason and Lucia are more established, taking on a job as security detail.
00:55There's some walking, some talking, a speech from a Corpo bigwig, and then the party is interrupted by professional killers
01:01with guns.
01:02The pair once again shoot their way out of the building.
01:04Rockstar missions have had this overly familiar pattern since the early GTA days.
01:09You meet a weird new character, you talk, and you drive with them for a while, and then you shoot
01:1318 people, and the mission's over.
01:15It's as if Rockstar believes that every story beat has to check off the same bullet points.
01:20My hope is that the majority of GTA 6 can buck this trend, and that this reveal prioritized action for
01:25the sake of spectacle.
01:26I know it's GTA, but wouldn't the explosions of action be more thrilling if they weren't always so expected?
